From the supplier: Errors in the program analysing the relationship between trade and growth in early Japan have been discovered and corrected. A reestimation has been performed and presented. The earlier results are similar to the reestimated figures regarding the impact of raising the ratio of exports to the GNP. However, instead of the overall rate of growth rising when the ratio of gross capital formation to GNP rises, it falls in the corrected estimates.

Book Description
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, women-owned businesses have been the fastest growing section of new business start-ups. Often lacking formal training, bank financing, and access to male business networks, women entrepreneurs frequently succeed despite what many consider set-backs in necessary resources.
Rational choice theories of entrepreneurship assume individuals make economic decisions to maximize personal profit with minimal influence from non-economic relationships. This study broadens rational choice theory to include non-economic motives, situation-based decision making, opportunities/constraints based on group membership, pushes and pulls from multiple group membership, and influences from relationships surrounding the actor in which she is embedded.
The study finds that women depend on a multiplicity of resources. They "translate" social resources into human and economic resources, blurring the boundaries between public and private sources of capital. Size and kind of community is a factor influencing women's business resources, especially for African American women. Social embeddedness theory is expanded to include multiplex ties to community that better reflect these women's experiences in starting a business.
Several policy implications are raised by the study. Rural African American women who have experienced disadvantages from long-term discrimination within the structure of rural education systems have significantly different needs than white women or urban black women. Business advocacy organizations must recognize these differences if they are to adequately serve these rural entrepreneurs. In addition, set-asides and procurement goals can result in unintended consequences that limit women's opportunities to participate fully in the open market.

Customer Reviews:
it just makes sense.......2002-07-26
As my husband and I read through the book, we realized it made a lot of sense to gather experiences from others. These people have made a work at home career workable. Paul and Sarah show us how to think on our feet, keep things in order, be flexible and get the kids involved too. We really appreciate all of the recommendations throughout the book. These are a huge source of unbelievable resources right at the finger tips. We are very anxious to go to the recommended websties, and of course, read the books. The three books that we have already purchased and are extremely pleased with are Getting Publicity, by Tana Fletcher, How to Raise a Family and a Career Under One Roof, by Lisa Roberts and Mommy-CEO, (Constantly Evaluating Others)5 Golden Rules, Revised Edition, by Jodie Lynn. So far, these three books have helped to pinpoint daily stress factors involving a business and last but certianly not least, kids in the home. There are many others listed which we are sure will be extremely useful in the big picture of things to come. In our experience, we have learned it doesn't matter how successful we'd like to be, but instead, getting the right answers for the right challenge and then making it workable for the family. As the authors say, if there are kids around, get them involved in either the business or other activities so work can be completed. This is a true statement especially if children are underfoot for the biggest part of the day. For the best use of our time on a daily basis, we know it's mandatory that parenting skills are sharp and respect is working on both ends of the spectrum. This book has almost every answer to every question entreprneurs wonder about. If there is any stone left unturned, it can surely be found in one of the many other recommended books or websites. Totally cool and it just makes sense.
Thinking of starting a business? Then buy this book!.......2002-07-25
I had bought Paul and Sarah Edwards book "How To Make Money in Cyberspace" several years ago when I first had the concept of my business... and I owe it all to Paul and Sarah for passing along their knowledge to make this business the success that it is. I only wish that "The Entrepreneurial Parent" had been published at that time as well. I would have saved myslef a lot of time and mistakes along the way as far as running a business from home with a small child. This book is cram packed full of advice, resources, techniques and real life examples. I can attest to all the book has to offer having gone through the process myself. Thank you Paul and Sarah for publishing such a valuable resource. I highly reccommend buying this book along with their other book "How To Make Money in Cyberspace" if you are thinking of starting an on-line business.
WOWWIE! Paul and Sarah, you've got a hit here!.......2002-07-20
Simply said, if you are a working parent, you've got to get this book! This book is BRILLIANTLY written - what a joy to read! Aside from the how to basics, you can tell that Paul and Sarah have really done their homework -- it's loaded with facts. This book features profiles of 111 entrepreneurs who spill the beans of what it's like in their careers, including a job description, their industry insight, marketing tips, and top revenue streams. Paul and Sarah paint a real picture of what it's like to work from home. They show that entrepreneurs defined success in terms of quality of life, rather than dollars earned. For many, it's a trade off that is well worth it for more time with the kids and a richer life. They offer extensive coverage of insurance options for the self-employed. Other topics include childcare options, how to handle summer vacations, and involving the family in your business.

Finding the ideal work-from-home situation can be daunting, especially for parents. This book breaks down the process from determining whether you're suited to be an at-home Entrepreneur vs. a corporate employee in an outside office, to finding the ideal business. The Edwards and Lisa Roberts, well-respected in their field, provide a thorough listing for all types of business opportunities available to Entrepreneurial Parents. I highly recommend this valuable resource!

I was gratified to read this guide as it's made me that much more prepared as I start thinking about what I need to do to snag an internship at CSFB. I liked how in-depth the front of the book was in chronicling the company's merger and the subsequent ups and downs the company has been going through. I feel more convinced that this company is a good fit with my goals and aspirations. I enjoyed the insider insights on what's great and what's not so hot at CSFB. And I really appreciated the in-depth info on the recruiting and training of associates and analysts who get into CSFB. As I'm fluent in 2 languages other than English, I'm definitely looking for a place such as CSFB that will call that into action and give me the chance to live abroad.

Tom Peters may be the only management guru who's most famous for being wrong. In Search of Excellence, his bestselling first effort, praised companies like People Express and IBM for their management, but those companies tanked soon after Excellence came out in 1982. Peters quickly reversed course and became one of the harshest critics of the type of management he once described as excellent. Soon he was advocating MBWA (Management By Walking Around), and by the time he wrote Thriving on Chaos in 1987, he was describing ways to make rapid, innovative changes in the way American companies do business.
Robert Heller is harshly critical of Peters's Excellence-era ideas and only mildly scornful of his Chaos precepts. Still, in Business Masterminds: Tom Peters, he manages to come up with "Masterclass" lessons drawn from Peters's works. For example, from Excellence he culls lessons such as "Any remedy is only good for as long as it works; do not become slavishly committed to a modus operandi forever." From Chaos he takes lessons on such topics as getting everyone in an organization involved in change and developing "total customer responsiveness." By the '90s, Peters was exhorting managers to embrace not just chaos, but lunacy. Among the lessons Heller pulls from this stage of Peters's career: "Hire a few genuine off-the-wall types" and "develop small units with their own personalities and disrespectful chiefs." The book concludes with a third Masterclass that is probably the most useful in the slim volume. It shows how to use Peters's latest ideas to make sense of the madness of modern business, in the management of one's own career, and in the running of an organization. Which will have to suffice until Peters changes his mind again about the way companies should be run. --Lou Schuler

Men's and women's lives have changed dramatically over the past few decades. Behind the change is the rise of a new economy based on services rather than manufacturing, which rewards the educated and encourages women to go to work. The changes in the roles of men and women have been nothing short of revolutionary, affecting every institution in our society, from the family to the workplace, from politics to the consumer marketplace. American Men and its companion volume American Women bring you the numbers behind the changes so you can compare and contrast the sexes. Recently released economic census data on business ownership is a valuable addition to these volumes. Each book is organized so you can quickly locate the data you're looking for, data which have been compiled into meaningful tables with time-saving calculations and descriptive text.
Customer Reviews:
Men quantified!.......2003-04-27
I'm glad I bumped into this book at a local college library. This books is full of statistics, partially gained from the latest census but definitely from other resources additionally, about men's education, habitation patterns, jobs, opinions, health, and other life matters. I loved finding out so much information about men, both like me and unlike me. Nevertheless, it does scare me a little that the government has so much info on any group.
This book will be helpful to high-level policymakers and everyday conversationalists alike. This book will be especially beneficial to college students and men's studies enthusiasts. This book was a first edition of a series; I can't wait to read later editions and other entries in the series.
In each entry, current statistics are given and the future is cautiously predicted based upon them. This book doesn't take long to read. However, with all the numbers floating by, one must read carefully in order to avoid miscomprehension.
This is not a sexist text. In the series, there is a text on American women and on Americans of both genders. Besides, numbers don't hurt; it's what is done with them that could. I sometimes this book did compare men and women more (otherwise one doesn't know if a stat on men is abnormal or a privilege). Still, please do not confuse the gender exclusitivity here for something oppressive.

Book Description
The `third way' is a term often used by politicians and others to indicate a set of new policies adopted by former social democratic parties throughout the world. This book is an attempt to dissect the ideas and economic theory behind the rhetoric of the `third way' through a critical evaluation of the experiences of `third way' administrations in a diverse range of countries.
The editors suggest seven elements which can help define the theoretical economic foundations of `third way' policies. They consider whether there is a consistent economic approach underlying the `third way', and show that it is much influenced by New Keynesian economics. The contributors to the book explore the policy experiences from ten different countries, plus the European Union as a whole. Each contribution provides an examination of the application and implementation of `third way' policies in a different country. These contributions indicate the similarities of the policies of the `third way', though important differences in experience also emerge.
Providing an acute assessment and comprehensive interpretation of the `third way', while neither endorsing nor dismissing its validity, this book should be widely read by policymakers, political scientists, and those with an interest in economic policy and economic analysis.
