      Book Description

This book helps managers and investment analysts understand the value of analyzing the long-run growth processes of corporations. The authors develop an approach for analyzing and modeling the productivity growth of individual corporations and show the importance of corporate culture in determining firm performance in the long-run. The model is explained in clear and non-technical terms, and is backed up by full mathematical proofs in an appendix. The authors use their diversity of experience from the business, academic and policy sectors to demonstrate a range of applications for their model. By applying the ideas of complexity and self-organization to the modern corporation, this book provides an alternative to the standard economic approach to corporate growth.

5 out of 5 stars A good network is critical to success - read this book to build a solid one........2007-07-09

Dig Your Well Before You're Thirsty is one of the best networking books I have read ("Never Eat Alone" is another great one) and one of the most important books for anyone who wishes to get ahead. Having a solid network of people will do more for your career advancement than almost anything you can do. Harvey Mackay list the top-ten most important things a network can do. Here are a five of those:
          1) A network replaces the weakness of the individual with the strength of the group
          2) A network can enrich your life anywhere in the world
          3) A network can help you help others
          4) Job security? Don't rely on the corporation. Rely on your network
          5) A network expands your financial reach infinitely

Mackay goes in great detail on how to build solid networks by adding value to others and keeping in touch. He believes that the most valuable tool in your office is your Rolodex. Harvey Mackay certainly knows what he is talking about, not only does he write books and give speeches, he has built an incredible company, in the envelope business, with over 100 million in annual revenue. He did this by learning EVERYTHING he could possibly know about his clients, not just their order history and size of company, but also the owners favorite sport, team, children's names, ages, spouse's name, where they grew up, what they are passionate about, what they are proud of, etc, etc. In this book he teaches us how to ask for that information, how to maintain the data fresh and how to use it to grow our networks.

My favorite quote from the book is: "No salesperson who knew the names of his customer's kids ever went broke." This is as true as: No person who reads this book and applies its principles will ever go broke. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Networking Leads To Opportunity.......2007-05-15

Harvey Mackay is a master of networking. All of his books stress the importance of professionals focusing on how to make, keep and grow their business relationships.....in this book it the the whole enchillada.

Although I read the book years ago, it is still a wonderful reference for me, now that I speak on the topic. I have learned much from Mr. Mackay, and this book is a must read for anyone who wants to make networking a higher priority.

5 out of 5 stars You will love this book as a networking beginner.......2007-04-30

I have to say, although I have gotten my Ph.D. degree in computer science and have worked around 3 years, I am a beginner in term of networkig (not the computer network). As a beginner, I really love this book because it answers the following questions using real and good stories:

          1. What is the network.
          2. Who should be in the network.
          3. How to meet a new people and make him/her part of your network.
          4. How to let others to remember you.
          5. Where to start your networking.
          6. How to keep your network.

          I really enjoy it.

4 out of 5 stars Overall pretty good, just a little too much fluff.......2007-04-13

Overall pretty good, just a little too much fluff. The book in made up of about a 100 short stories about good and bad networking tips. About 70% is pretty good, while the other 30% is fluff. Still a good read.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful stories and quotes.......2004-11-25

I must admit, for the first time, I'm reviewing a book I have not actually read. I did, however, read Jacob M. Braude's "New Treasury of Stories for Every Speaking and Writing Occasion," Prentice Hall, Inc., Englewood Cliffs, NJ, June 1961 obtainable used through Amazon but no longer published. So, I'm taking a leap of faith that this book is an update to the one I've read. I collect quotes as a hobby, and Braude provides the finest short, speaker's stories I've found in one place. Here are just a few examples:
When Thomas Jefferson presented his credentials as U.S. minister to France, the French premier remarked, "I see that you have come to replace Benjamin Franklin." "I have come to succeed him," corrected Jefferson. "No one can replace him." p. 336
There is a monument in Gettysburg to honor the memory of a color-bearer who became isolated from his regiment after a charge. The regiment retired, but the color-bearer and several men held their ground. The Major sent a messenger through to the boy, "Bring the colors back to the regiment." The boy replied, "Bring the regiment back to the colors." George W. Olinger, p. 84
After President Coolidge issued his famous "I do not choose to run" statement, he was besieged by reporters seeking a more detailed statement. One more persistent than his fellows followed Mr. Coolidge to the door of his library. "Exactly why don't you want to be President again, Mr. Coolidge?" he asked. Coolidge turned and looked him squarely in the eye, "Because," he answered, "there's no chance for advancement," p. 17

Also, some humor mixed with wisdom:
Once a week the road-sweeper came by with his brush. He was a friendly old fellow; and Miss Gidding at the Hollies, got into the habit all that summer of taking him a glass of lemonade and a slice of cake. He thanked her shyly, and that was all. But one evening there came a knock at the back door of the Hollies. The road-sweeper was there, a cauliflower in one hand and a bunch of sweet peas in the other. He seemed embarrassed as he said, "I've brought you these, ma'am, for your kindness." "Oh, you shouldn't," exclaimed Miss Gidding, "It was nothing." And then, the road-sweeper said an odd thing. "Well, no," he agreed, "maybe it wasn't much, really ma'am. But it was more than anybody else did." (From 500 Tales to Tell Again, H. L. Gee, Ed., London Epworth Press), p. 161
A professor who has taught for many years was counseling a young teacher. "You will discover," he said, "that in nearly every class there is a youngster eager to argue. Your first impulse will be to silence him. I advise you to think carefully before doing so. He probably is the only one listening." p. 382.)

And ones that really make you think:
In a talk to the graduating class at Smith College, Adlai Stevenson once told his listeners that the "self-adjusted" people who fit painlessly into the social pattern may not be the most valuable citizens. "While I am not in favor of maladjustment," he added, "I view this cultivation of neutrality, this breeding of mental neuters, this hostility to eccentricity with grave misgiving. One looks back with dismay at the possibility of Shakespeare perfectly adjusted to bourgeois life in Stratford, Wesley contentedly administering a county parish, George Washington going to London to receive a barony from George III, or Abraham Lincoln prospering in Springfield with nary a concern for the preservation of the crumbling union. What is needed," continued Mr. Stevenson, "is not just well-adjusted, well-balanced personalities, not just better groupies and conformers but more idiosyncratic, unpredictable characters; people who take open eyes and open minds out with them into the society which they will share and help to transform." p. 281
An old man was living with his son at an abandoned fort on the top of a hill, and one day he lost a horse. The neighbors came to express their sympathy for this misfortune, and the old man asked, "How do you know this is bad luck?" A few days afterwards, his horse returned with a number of wild horses, and his neighbors came again to congratulate him on this stroke of fortune, and the old man replied, "How do you know this is good luck?" With so many horses around, his son began to take to riding, and one day he broke his leg. Again the neighbors came around to express their sympathy, and the old man replied, "How do you know this is bad luck?" The next year there was a war, and because the old man's son was crippled, he did not have to go to the front. (George Kao, Chinese Wit & Humor, Coward-McCann, 1946, p. 224

He also included a number of fine short quotations:
A proverb is a short sentence based on long experience. Miguel de Cervantes, p. 315
A man would do nothing, if he waited until he could do it so well that no one at all would find fault with what he has done. Cardinal Newman, p. 274
Everybody thinks of changing humanity and nobody thinks of changing himself. Count Leo Tolstoy, p. 353
Only a mediocre writer is always at his best. W. Somerset Maugham, p. 40
If you cannot say what you have to say in 20 minutes, you should go away and write a book about it. Lord Brabazon, p. 320
Good management consists of showing average people how to do the work of superior people. (John D. Rockefeller, p. 57

And my favorite quotation in the book:
Present suffering is not enjoyable, but life would be worth little without it. The difference between iron and steel is fire, but steel is worth all it costs. Iron ore may think itself senselessly tortured in the furnace, but when the watch spring looks back, it knows better. Rufus Babcock, p. 17

And my very favorite story of all:
Walking down a country lane, a man heard his little granddaughter from the other side of a large bush. She was repeating the alphabet-A, B, C, D, E, but in an oddly reverent sort of way. He waited until she was through and then walked around to find her. "What were you doing?" he asked. "I was praying," she answered. "I couldn't think of the right words, so I just said the letters, and God will put them together into the words, because He knows what I was thinking." (Robert E. Goodrich, Jr., What's It All About, Fleming H. Revell Co., p. 300

Beginning with a small land-based steam rig powered by two 45-horsepower boilers, Arch and Charlie Rowan founded a company that has since become one of the premier drilling, rig construction and aviation companies in the oil industry. Today, Rowan owns and operates the mobile offshore drilling units known as the gorillas-class rigs, the largest in the world standing at more than 560 feet.

Throughout its 75 years, Rowan has struggled against stormy climates - both nature's and the cyclical economics tendency of the oil and gas industry. From the heat of Louisiana's marshes to the frigid cold of Alaskas North Slope, Rowanites overcame the elements to extract oil and gas from an uncooperative ground. They continue to challenge the ocean's violence and its wind-driven waves to supply the world's energy needs.

Along the way, Rowan has become a world-class aviation and construction company. The company acquired ERA, which brought Alaskan pioneer Carl Brady into the fold, and LeTourneau, builder of the Gorilla drilling rigs as well as its famous earth-moving equipment. Each acquisition has helped Rowan in its quest for hydrocarbons.

As the life blood of civilization, oil is a commodity affected by world politics, and Rowan's fortunes have a followed the roller coaster of international relations. Under Chairman and CEO Bob Palmer, the company gambled heavily during uncertain times when oil prices plummeted amid worldwide recession. Rowan shook off the despair that gripped its industry to emerge with record revenues, and world-class equipment and personnel. The challenge is constant, however. Future company leaders, brought up in Rowans family-like culture, must face the reality of the technical, financial and political hurdles their predecessors have conquered.

In this comprehensive work, industrial historian and author Jeffrey L. Rodengen tells the fascinating story of 'The Legend of Rowan.'
