    Book Description

Economics and Social Interaction is a fresh attempt to overcome the traditional inability of economics to deal with interpersonal phenomena that occur within the sphere of markets and productive organizations. It makes use of traditional economic concepts for understanding interpersonal events, while venturing beyond those concepts to give a better account of personalised interactions. In contrast to other books, Economics and Social Interaction offers the reader a rigorous effort at extending economic analysis to a difficult field in a consistent manner, sensitive to insights from other behavioural and social sciences. This collection represents an important contribution to a growing research agenda in the social sciences.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A good solid resume book.......2006-01-31

No resume knocks anyone dead, but this book generally gives good advice on how to write one. In Yate's resume samples you'll sometimes see lists and bullet lists that are too long for anyone but a computer to sift through, and some of the sample resumes are a bit crowded, but all-in-all, the content is very useful. If you've thought through what kind of work you want and know who your targeted employers are, this is a good solid resume book.

3 out of 5 stars Middle of the road..........2003-01-28

I didn't find any new, earth-shattering insights into the resume process, but it did layout the fundamentals nicely. I learned a few new things, and it gave me a good outline to put together a resume.
The section that describes how to pull the resume information together, would have been presented better had it been in some sort of a chart or list format. The way it is set up - it is wrtten in long sentences that stretch over a couple pages. I had to keep flipping back and forth to remember what step to do next.
There was a lot of redundant information, and I thought the examples didn't help me much.
But in the end, it did prompt me to put together a new, more concise, and tailored resume. Although the description of how to edit the final resume was a bit broad.

2 out of 5 stars Too General and Elementary.......2002-09-05

Book offers too simplistic and barely entry-level formatting and ideas. The styles were all basic and not varied enough, and the jobs were all low level. I am a marketing director and the upper level resumes they had were still so basic they were not useful as examples. Might be good for high school students, though.

    5 out of 5 stars Top-notch advice.......2002-04-16

This book is as good as it gets. Put the time into following setp-by-step and you will have a dramatically different view of your own skills. Plus, you'll end-up with a fantastic resume.

5 out of 5 stars Your book is great.......2002-02-05

I learnerd so much from this book.

3 out of 5 stars Not quite knockin' 'em dead.......2005-03-08

I used this along with "Cover Letter Magic" and "The Very Quick Job Search," and I prefer those over this one. Though certainly an improvement over the old "Enclosed please find" style, the examples throughout the book are still a bit stiff, unnecessarily wordy, and dated. There's also not as much variety as in the other books.

On meail cover letters, he gives a bit of misinformation, which suggests he may not be as up-to-speed on email limitations as he could be. Specifically, he suggests using a signature-styled font in an email. (That only works if the recipient has the same font on their PC.)

I liked the examples of "Resurrection" letters (basically a thanks for the rejection), but their use is never explained in the book, so there's nothing to suggest this tactic is effective. (The only mention in the other books is in "Cover Letter Magic." They advise against them.) My guess is that this would have to be done selectively and carefully. What may be seen as persistence by the job seeker may be interpreted by the potential employer as either not being able to take a hint or a desperate need to have the last word.

It's an okay book, particularly if your personal style is somewhat formal and "old school," but it's not worthy of its title.

Lots and lots of cover letters, styles and information. Very helpful!

    4 out of 5 stars BRAVO>>>>Well done maestro!!!.......2000-10-06

Excellent book it showed me all I needed to write the perfect cover letter and it was incredibly easy to read and showed excellent examples of all different types of job seeking situations. I highly recommend this to anyone...from professionals to those seeking part-time employment, well done Mr. Yate!

5 out of 5 stars You need this book!.......2000-09-08

I used this book when I was job searching during my senior year of college. I read it cover to cover, and followed the author's advice. I was highly successful in my job search, landing my dream job. I was even complimented several times on my "very creative" cover letter. You can't go wrong with this book!

1 out of 5 stars Letters are all the same and don't offer much variety.......1999-01-20

I think the letters in this book are just average, and they focus on me, me, me. There is nothing that helps the writer craft a letter to meet the needs of the employer. A good title, but this books misses the mark.

                            ANYTHING can be.

                            Shel Silverstein

A book, like money, can change the world. But it can only do this if people like you honestly believe that ANYTHING can be. Like a smart five-year old, we know that ANYTHING can be. But unlike them, we know that for ANYTHING to be, you must first be aware of how to make it be. That's what this book is about, how to make certain ANYTHINGS be in the lives of all our nation's young people. Actually, it's about two ANYTHINGS that can be. The first is how we help young people lead economically successful lives. The second is how we can help them lead purpose-filled lives. Which means, this book has as much to say to RICH CHILDREN as it does to MIDDLE CLASS and POOR CHILDREN. This is a book that every teacher of high school students should read. This is also a book that every parent of high school children should read.

WAIT A MINUTE! Are you saying you honestly believe that every child in America can be a millionaire?

WHY NOT? It's just another ANYTHING that can be, and if every child in America is aware of how easy it is to become a millionaire—WHY CAN'T IT BE?

IT CANNOT BE because the poor will always be among us!

There you go thinking like a GROWNUP again, listening to the IMPOSSIBLES, and saying things cannot be because they've never been before. Thank goodness the Wright Brothers, Alexander Graham Bell, and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. didn't have you around as their chief cheerleader. Accumulating wealth is one of the easiest things in the world to do, if it's something you really want to do. All it requires is a basic awareness of how this is done, a bit of patience, and a little self-discipline. What's more, if you work it cleverly, it doesn't even require the discipline.

Well, MAYBE IT CAN BE, but I'm from Missouri, so you're going to have to show me.

That's exactly why we wrote this book. To show folks just like you what an easy concept this is to teach young people. Becoming a millionaire involves nothing more than making good decisions about your time and your money. And if you make good choices about the two most precious economic resources in your life, becoming a millionaire will happen almost automatically. Even if it doesn't, you'll still have one heck of a good life.

In this book, all we've done is set forth some time-proven precepts on economic and life success. You need the facts, but you also need a little fun, so we'll let you in on the real deal behind the Ant and the Grasshopper, Cinderella, The Three Little Pigs, and The Little Red Hen. We know what really happened in these fairy tales, and like Paul Harvey, we want to give you "The Rest of the Story."

If you were not born wealthy, and you're not smart enough to marry wealthy, then the three most likely routes to your economic success are

                            A. ENTREPRENEURSHIP, either on a world-class stage like Bill Gates, or on local stage like millions of self-employed Millionaires Next Door,

                            B. DEVELOPING A GOD-GIVEN TALENT, like Tiger Woods, Stephen Spielberg, or renowned pediatric neurosurgeon Dr. Benjamin Carson, or

                            C. FINDING YOUR EMPLOYMENT PASSION AND INVESTING YOUR WAY TO WEALTH, like some 550,000 Millionaire Next Door university professors and researchers have done with TIAA/CREF.

Investing your way to wealth is not nearly as romantic as marrying wealthy. It is also not as lucrative as entrepreneurship or as personally fulfilling as developing a special talent. But it will allow anyone who truly wants to be a millionaire to be just that. All it demands is that you invest $166 a month - at 12% interest - for 420 months. And since the stock market has averaged about 12% over the last 73 years, it's not hard to find these kinds of investments. Assuming you invest just 10% of your net income on a monthly basis, to achieve your millionaire objective, your gross salary never has to be more than $25,000 a year. If you start at age 20, you'll be a millionaire by age 55. The average combined annual household income of our nations' K-12 teachers is $61,041.00. This statistic says that the only reason every teacher in America isn't a millionaire—by the time they give up the chalkboard and erasers—is that no one has ever taken them by the hand and shown them how easy it is to achieve this possibility. This defines half of what Discovering the Millionaire in Every Child is all about—showing teachers and parents how to help young people, as well as themselves, achieve lives of unimagined economic possibilities.

If you're extremely entrepreneurial, extremely talented, or a disciplined and forward-thinking investor, developing and carrying out a sound wealth-accumulation plan isn't complicated. All three strategies require personal commitment, but they are in no way complex. However, helping a young person discover their life calling and then develop a strategy to carry out this discovery is a whole other ball game. Strategic life planning, i.e. helping young people discover and live up to the demands of their "life purpose," is a powerful art every teacher and parent should not only understand but fully master.

Ultimately, everything we do in life is a function of our decisions about three very simple things: How we use our time, how we use our money, and those with whom we spend our time. If you know where you're going—and you master these decisions—you will define your life in very special ways.

We have a simple theory: Forty years from now, somebody is going to have to be the new Aaron Copeland, Amy Tan, Arthur C. Clarke, B.B. King, Beverly Cleary, Bill Cosby, Beverly Sills, Bill Gates, Bishop Desmond Tutu, Bob Keeshan, Carl Sagan, Eleanor Roosevelt, Garrison Keillor, Garth Brooks, George Lucas, Helen Keller, George Carlin, Jane Goodall, John Grisham, Joan Ganz Cooney, John Hope Franklin, Jonas Salk, Katherine Hepburn, Larry Ellison, Leonard Bernstein, Louie Armstrong, Margaret Mead, Louis L'Amour, Maya Angelou, Michael Dell, Montel Williams, Oprah Winfrey, Paul Harvey, Quincy Jones, Ralph Lauren, Ruth Bader Ginzberg, Stephen Hawking, Tina Turner, Tom Joyner, Walt Disney, and yes, even the new and improved Donald Trump.

This means, as always, a few young people are going to make the commitment to be among the very best in our society. Since this is true, the young people who are your children might as well be among them. Therein lies the other half of Discovering the Millionaire in Every Child—helping teachers and parents help young people, as well as themselves, discover how to live a life filled with unimagined growth and personal possibilities.

Unsolicited commercial email--spam--has become the most frequent complaint among users of the Internet. Its blaring subject lines and gaudy content--repetitive at best and frequently offensive--have made it much harder to make productive use of computers. Fighting Spam for Dummies presents some techniques for keeping your email address off spammers' mailing lists and, when that fails, keeping junk mail out of your primary inbox with filters and other utilities. As a last resort, the book (which, oddly, has three co-authors of its 200 small pages) shows you how to adjust your email program so it doesn't automatically show pictures and is less likely to spread viruses.

There's a fair bit of interesting material in this book, a lot of which has to do with the tricks spammers use to conceal their identities. You'll find detailed instructions on how to convert the header lines of a garbage message--complete with obfuscated URLs and fake IP addresses--into the real origin of the message. Of course, there's not much more to do once you've figured out that the message originated in Taiwan or Russia, but that's not the fault of the authors. Elsewhere in this slender handbook, you'll find click-by-click instructions for erecting filters and making other worthwhile configuration changes in Eudora, Netscape and Mozilla Mail, several versions of Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express, and several Webmail sites. --David Wall

Topics covered: Where spam comes from and what you can do about it. Instructions for configuring email clients focus on software for Microsoft Windows.

If you have e-mail, you have spam—that annoying electronic junk mail that jams your inbox, sometimes makes you blush, and takes a lot of the fun out of your online experience. Spam wastes thousands of hours and costs you, the recipient of the stuff you don’t want, thousands of dollars in increased costs that your Internet service provider eventually passes along to you. In fact, a European survey in 2001 revealed that spam costs about $9.4 billion each year!

Spammers spam because they’re not paying for it, you are. The good news is, you can fight back, and Fighting Spam For Dummies tells you how. Find out

You’ll get the plai n-English explanation for activating any additional protection offered by your ISP, and discover how to make the best use of any spam filter that came with your e-mail program. Fighting Spam For Dummies will arm you with information about

The ultimate solution to spam has yet to be found, but these Internet-savvy authors give you the tools to help level the playing field. They also offer some solid suggestions for anti-spam laws and how you can join the war on spam.

ISPs should buy this book in bulk and mail it out to every new customer. Then they shouldn't turn on the customer's connectivity until they've passed a test on the contents. If they actually did that, users wouldn't make the silly mistakes like responding to remove instructions to verify their addresses for spammers.

I thought I knew everything there was to know about spam, but found myself changing things on my system even before I had completely finished the book.

For someone without the time to read the whole book, I'd suggest reading chapters 2,4,5,12 and the one for your specific email client. If you haven't picked an email client yet, and are among the 95% of the world running a windows desktop, I agree with his recommendation to use Eudora. They have a free sponsored version with reasonable filtering. Get the spamnix plugin, learn procmail if your ISP lets you use it, and you're most of the way home to a spam free mailbox.

And never, ever respond to remove instructions. It proves that you have a valid email address, that you will read a spam to the bottom to find the remove instructions, and are gullible enough to believe anything a spammer tells you. Spammers love people like that, because that's the kind of person that may actually make them a buck someday.

4 out of 5 stars Limited advice, mostly for end users.......2004-07-02

A simple book, aimed squarely at the typical email user. Systems administrators wishing for guidance on stopping spam will find little here that they don't already know.

Some of the advice, like blocking messages from an undesirable sender, is of limited use. Only works against a spammer who has not forged the sender line. This has been an enduring problem with spam. Likewise, the book offers advice on analysing the header trail. But again, the spammer can control [forge] much of the header data.

There is good advice on the opt-in and opt-out mechanisms purportedly offered by several sender companies. Mainstream companies will indeed honour your requests. Good. But, as the book explains, a spammer can turn your request against you, since she now knows that your email address is valid and actively read, which increases the value of it to her.

                                Book Description

In this book a distinguished group of international contributors, from both developing and higher income countries, identify and discuss major social conflicts, labor and distributional concerns, environmental issues and impacts arising from the very rapid increase in globalization experienced since the early 1970s.

Issues considered include: possible alternatives to globalization, cultural and linguistic inequalities associated with globalization, consequences of growing regionalism and economic inequality between and within nations. Poverty, international migration, biodiversity conservation, natural resource sustainability, and global trade in genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are also discussed.

A substantial introductory chapter provides a significant overview of the rate and process of economic globalization and integrates the contributions and their interconnections for the reader. Economic Globalization offers policy proposals and responses and represents divergent views and rigorous theoretical analysis.

Economists, particularly those with an interest in international economics, labor, environmental and ecological economics, macroeconomics and social economics will all find this book of great interest.

                                  Book Description

Recent economic trends are changing forever the face of Japanese industrial relations; Japanese Management and Labour explores these changes. Authors Mari Sako and Hiroko Sato examine the responses of both Japanese management and labour, and that of the Japanese government, to these economic transitions. In Part 1 of the work, recent trends in Japanese labour markets, labour law and corporate strategy are explored. As labour and management yield to these new economic pressures, changes in industrial relations are shown to be the inevitable result. Part 2 analyses the interaction between the state, management and labour. Both the macro and the micro levels are given full consideration, as the government of Japan seeks to strike a balance between the often antithetical needs of labour and management. This compilation of current research has been collected by leading Japanese scholars, and effectively challenges the traditional view of `lifetime' employment while focusing on the growing economic pressures that Japanese management and labour currently face. Japanese Management and Labour is sure to add to the lively debate now taking place regarding management in recessionary Japan.
