    Book Description

This innovative text ushers in a new way of examining basic economic issues. It teaches economics from a different standpoint, using a division-of-labor theme to eliminate the need for a dichotomy between microeconomics and macroeconomics. This text shows how resource allocation and levels of division of labor are determining factors for demand and supply. It also illustrates the ways that unemployment and business cycles are seen as features of the network of division of labor. While innovative in content, this book keeps the continuity of mainstream economics through a synthesis of existing and emerging branches of economics. It is an exceptional work that will encourage both creative and critical thinking.

      Description:
Yang (2001) summarizes new classical economics, pioneered by Yang (1988). Individuals are consumer-producers; consumption is linked to the level of productive specialization. The key parameter is an ''iceberg'' transaction cost (i.e., one dollar spent means less than one dollar received). Autarky (specialization) occurs when transactions costs are above (below) a certain threshold. Firms are collections of consumer-producers tied together by contracts. Trade occurs even if individuals have identical preferences and productive capabilities because there are increasing returns to specialization. The division of labor, the extent of the market and economic organization are characterized by aggregating.

5 out of 5 stars Bob Burg is a Great Communicatin Mentor! You must read this book!.......2007-10-12

I met Bob Burg in a business convention in Los Angeles area. Bob Burg is truly a great person who really practices what he teaches. He is a person of honesty, humility and integrity.

I bought all his teaching materials, CDs, tapes and books; and this "Winning Without Intimidation" book is a must-read book for everyone who wants to get a promotion at work, and to increase profits for their business.

This book will teach you how to negotiate better, to sell better, to communicate better, to understand people and one thing that I love the most about this book, it has taught me to develop a positive aura by appreciating other people around us.

This "Winning Without Intimidation" book has helped me to receive many promotions at work and it has helped me as a communication professional to meet more clients and to deal with them more effectively.

I have a lot of respect for Bob Burg for who he is. He is real, he always answers his email personally, and he has shared his wisdom, knowledge and understanding in the communication and networking area that has totally changed my life for the better! Thank you Bob, you are amazing!

I really recommend this book, it is worth the investment!

5 out of 5 stars Help me say the right things.......2007-09-10

This book will change the way you talk. If you can't I'll understand, but if there is any way your could I would apprectiate it. You will win with other as well as win with yourself when you read and put into practice the suggestions in this book. I would suggest every married man read this book for it has the power to change the way you speak to your wife! Awesome book.

      5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2007-02-15

I would highly recommend this book and his "Endless Referrals" book to anyone who owns a business or is in sales. I was new to Chamber of Commerce and networking meetings, and Bob's books allowed me to step in and have at least a five-fold better impact from those meetings. Quickly become an influencer in your city! Bob Burg's books can help you gain a competitive edge and be more profitable.

      5 out of 5 stars a very good book!.......2005-04-18

i found this book to be an excelent tool for anysituation you`l incounter in life. most subjects discussed in this book, are simple and common sence, but no one does it untill they read this book and realise those things... my recomendation: a definite must buy for anyone

5 out of 5 stars Move over, Dale Carnegie!.......2005-03-18

Great ideas! If Dale Carnegie were still around I would think he'd be saying "I wish that `How to Win Friends and Influence People' was as comprehensive and useful as Bob Burg's ideas".
This book could be called "Human Relations 101". Filled with great, specific ideas on how to handle everything from tactfully turning down an invitation to politely getting off a call from a fund raiser to negotiating a better price.

      Book Description

In this lively account, computerese expert John A. Barry chronicles an important linguistic development, which he has termed "technobabble": the pervasive and indiscriminate use of computer terminology, especially as it is applied to situations that have nothing all to do with technology.

John A. Barry is the coauthor of nine books, including the bestseller Sunburst. The Ascent of Sun Microsystems. He is currently a freelance writer and consultant in the San Francisco Bay area.

      5 out of 5 stars insightful book.......2000-05-20

this book does very well at helping us understand computer lingo, though it might be slightly over the head of some people. A highly original book

1 out of 5 stars Very long winded with little to recommend it.......1999-04-03

This book offered so much and delivered very little. If you're looking to discover why "byte" is spelt the way it is or where the term originated from, you won't find it here.

Unless you are well coached in the babble of English Lit then a lot of Barry's prose will go right over your head. He seems to have received most of his information from the Random House Unabridged Dictionary - every second pages seems to quote from it. If I were interested in what Random House had to say then I would have bought their dictionary and not this book!

Don't bother looking here for lively and interesting tales about how various words came to be, instead have a look at such books as Hackers, Digital Deli, The Devouing Fungus, The Naked Computer, and The Hackers Dictionary.

I agree with the reviewer from Michigan. This is an amazing book -- very thoughtful, and thought-provoking with first-rate writing. I lost my own father a few years ago, so I found much to relate to here -- how the loss of a parent affects one, but also the evaluation of one's own life and character such an event sparks. After reading this book, one gains an entirely new perspective of the role of money in our lives -- how it indeed define us and our relationship to and with just about everything. An interesting and useful book for anyone facing the loss of a parent, and for all Baby Boomers finally accepting the need to grow up. (BTW -- This book is not as somber as it may sound -- the stories about coin collectors and their foibles are hysterical!)

5 out of 5 stars An evocative work of uncommon wisdom.......2002-11-24

In early 1998, Don Nichols began returning to Iowa from his life and job in Washington, DC, to be with his dying father and to oversee his parents' investments. A veteran investor who'd written eight personal finance books, Nichols found that managing the portfolio entrusted to him brought a larger understanding of money and mortality, family, love, his job at the U.S. Mint, and life choices he'd made.

Sad, funny, searching, and also financially savvy, "Currency of the Heart" is about the dimensions of investing, rediscovering family, honoring promises, the parting of a father and son, and a middle-aged son's new bond with an aging mother.

The review at Salon.com says it all: "The result is brilliant -- a book that is poetic in its prose, profound and yet effortlessly readable, a book that is full of humor and sorrow, confusion and loss and pride and joy. Time spent in Donald Nichols' head will simultaneously make you want to call your father, count your pennies, investigate whether you should be putting money in Treasury bonds, and wonder what kind of person, really, you are ... "Currency of the Heart" transcends a pathetic genre and delivers a masterpiece."

From the early 1950s into the late '80s, IBM was the computer industry. Not only that, IBM was, to many, industry itself. It consistently set the standard for corporate performance and profitability, both in the U.S. and worldwide. But that all changed in a strange, swift, and brutal way. IBM--which had fiddled while Microsoft and Intel created a firestorm in the personal-computer world--lost money for three consecutive years in the early '90s. The decision to allow Microsoft to control PC software and Intel to supply the microprocessors (they're both companies IBM could've easily bought out early in the game) came back to bite IBM on its bloated blue butt. And its no-layoffs policy, though admirable, meant the company kept a workforce of more than 300,000, making decisions at a glacial pace while other companies nimbly jumped from one new market to the next.

All that changed when Lou Gerstner was named CEO of IBM in 1993. Gerstner had already led turnarounds at American Express and RJR Nabisco, and, as Saving Big Blue details, he proved to be the right man for the job. Gerstner started by changing the company's funereal dress code and eventually redirected the company to provide computer services rather than just computers. Saving Big Blue makes for interesting reading as a case study, but also provides a blueprint for any manager attempting to turn around a business. --Lou Schuler

                                    Book Description

"There's been a lot of speculation on when I will deliver a vision. The last thing IBM needs right now is a vision. What it needs right now are tough-minded, market-driven, highly effective strategies." - Lou Gerstner, 1993. SAVING BIG BLUE is the spell-binding saga of how Lou Gerstner resurrected IBM from an all-but-certain death into a textbook example of corporate turnaround wizardry. How he, by infusing a sense of urgency into a company which had begun to equate aggressiveness with dishonor, led Big Blue from an $8 billion loss in 1993 to a $3 billion profit in 1994--an unprecedented $11 billion+ turnaround!

Written by world-renowned corporate biographer Robert Slater, SAVING BIG BLUE packs instant impact. It presents numerous leadership secrets and success maxims, then looks inside each to reveal management insights that can be applied to situations of any size or type. For example:

"Sweep Aside the Old Corporate Culture if Necessary, But Do It Quickly" - Gerstner's focus was absolute. When it came to cleaning house, even his own brother wasn't protected.

"Set High Expectations: Don't Settle for Mediocrity" - Gerstner couldn't understand, and wouldn't tolerate, lack of enthusiasm. He made it clear he wouldn't accept second best--and that rewards awaited the winners. "Listen to Customers--They Know Best What They Need"

                                    - Relive the legendary Chantilly meeting, where Gerstner invited the Chief Information Officers of IBM's 200 largest customers to meet with--and confront--the new IBM chief.

"You're never done. And when you think you're done, you're in trouble." - Lou Gerstner, 1998. Lou Gerstner's rescue of IBM is one of the world's most inspiring--and instructive--corporate success stories.

Filled with page after page of lessons that can be used in virtually any corporate environment, SAVING BIG BLUE takes an honest, inside look at how Gerstner stressed service, propelled IBM into the Internet revolution, and continues the job of to restoring IBM as the world's most powerful corporation. It provides a step-by-step blueprint for achieving success in today's turbulent corporate world.

The content of the book is worthy of being studied by managers. How to control risks and how to bring comany away from risk, is a necessary topic in such times, especially after 911.
IBM is a great company which was founded in a great country. Now IBM belongs to the world, not only for its great profit, but for its great experience, including its great failure in past.
So, this book is worthy of be read, you will learn a lot from it.
The essence of IBM works in all respected companies.

                                    4 out of 5 stars Insightful!.......2001-04-27

Listen, my children, and you shall hear the incredible saga of how IBM nearly died and was revived by Lou Gerstner. Robert Slater tells the tale of IBM's turnaround after it nearly sank under the weight of institutionalized arrogance and failure to heed advancements in the industry it had dominated. Gerstner broke company tradition, fired employees who believed they had a sinecure, slashed a decade-old bureaucracy, and switched IBM's focus from products to solutions. This action portrait shows a man smart enough and tough enough to rebuild an empire. The book's lessons are artfully woven into the fabric of Gerstner's personal story and IBM's corporate history. We [...] recommend this book to any high level executive whose organization needs a revolution or to any businessperson who wants a juicy reminder of what it takes to win the war of independence.

1 out of 5 stars Light on Facts, Light on Analysis.......2000-01-22

I was disappointed by this book. As an ex-IBM'er who was there during the bad times as well as the Gerstner led recovery, I was looking forward to insights about the times and the man. The book lacked both. It was written in a sloppy way, with the same tired facts about stock price recovery and growth in different parts of IBM's business being repeated over and over again. When it appeared there would be some fascinating insight, it faded into nothingness e.g. when Slater started to write about the demise of senior execs, the best he could do was trot out some triteness about the disposal of Lou's brother Richard who was at that time a consultant. The book was filled with quotes from Fortune and many other business magazines as if all his research was done from them. Over all, a disappointment.

4 out of 5 stars excellent example of leadership vs corporate complacency.......1999-10-26

As a former employee of both IBM and AT&T, I lived through years of lack of leadership, innovation and bad management decisions. Lou Gerstner demonstrated that a few common sense principles (listen, customers, focus) go a long way in building a business. I enjoyed the book very much and recommended it to my co-workers.

3 out of 5 stars IBM financials, anyone?.......1999-10-21

In the whoel sceme of the book, it appears that the author is focusing on financials of the company and not the person.
