Book Description
"The core topics in this engaging book--markets, networks, the workplace, social stratification, economic development, and globalization--are approached with a keen sociological lens, revealing how these diverse economic phenomena are embedded in society in a myriad of ways. ... This book displays the authors' vivid sociological imagination--it tackles big issues and real problems with analytical power and lively ideas. Students, scholars, and, yes, even economists will both enjoy and be rewarded for their time spent with Economy/Society." --Walter W. Powell, Stanford University This book offers an accessible introduction to the various institutional arrangements that govern economic activity, and shows that economic exchanges are deeply embedded in social relationships. It demonstrates that an understanding of how the economy is socially constructed offers rich and novel insights into such topics as advertising, consumer behavior, the diffusion of innovations, conflicts at the workplace, social inequality, and the economic development of nations.

Book Description
First published in 1982, this pioneering work traces the transformation of "women's work" into wage labor in the United States, identifying the social, economic, and ideological forces that have shaped our expectations of what women do. Basing her observations upon the personal experience of individual American women set against the backdrop of American society, Alice Kessler-Harris examines the effects of class, ethnic and racial patterns, changing perceptions of wage work for women, and the relationship between wage-earning and family roles. In the 20th Anniversary Edition of this landmark book, the author has updated the original and written a new Afterword.
Customer Reviews:
Thorough and Vastly Informative.......2006-10-23
I've been reading US women's history for a couple of years now,
working on background for a novel, and I have seen nothing that
matches this book for careful, detailed exposition of the role of
women in the workplace. I'm most familiar with the period from
1880 to 1910, and Kessler-Harris covers that era thoroughly and
convincingly. Reading about the earlier years, though, has greatly
increased my understanding of the period I've been studying.
Kessler-Harris shows how paternalistic beliefs about "woman's
place," and views of women as weak and basically stupid, have from
the beginning deeply influenced the lives of women of all classes, but
she also shows how even the development of new machinery in
factories was shaped by the needs of employers to find cheap
workers--who were, of course, women.
I wish women would read this book. Talk about
consciousness-raising!
Having done a good deal of historical research with primary sources, on other subjects and in other periods, I know Kessler-Harris has been thorough and conscientious. She also writes very well. I'm going to buy the new edition, because whatever she has to say will be fascinating.
Excellent book!.......2003-02-14
This excellent book describes how women have always worked in what is today the USA. Well written with good examples it tells the story of how women moved from working primarily at home industries through early factory days (and how factories were made acceptable and then degraded into sweat shops and worse). It continues the story through the 19th and 20th centuries, discussing how often public perceptions and rhetoric conflicted with actual work practices. I am very glad it is out in a new edition and that a new generation will have easy access to it.

Book Description
Momentous developments in the global economy over the last two decades have dramatically increased the availability of industrial investment sites and lowered the cost of relocating core activities to new countries. But how should these developments be exploited for competitive advantage? Firms face competing pressures: scale economies and the advantages of proximity push them to concentrate activities in one or only a few locations, while low wages and new markets invite dispersal across several countries.
This book examines how location decisions have contributed to the global dominance of U.S. firms in the hard disk drive industry. In analyzing the industry since its beginnings some forty years ago, the book explains how American leadership in disk drives has rested on the formation of two complementary industrial clusters. Fundamental research and product development has been located almost entirely in the United States, principally California. Manufacturing has been concentrated in Southeast Asia (initially in Singapore and later in Thailand and Malaysia as well). This duality has proven key to the successful competitive position of the U.S. disk drive industry.
Beyond the particulars of the disk drive industry, the authors present new perspectives on the sources of industrial leadership, the strategic behavior of multinational corporations, the geographic evolution of industry, and the creation and endurance of industrial clusters. Managers will gain insight into how location decisions can contribute to organizational effectiveness, and will learn that globalizing production, while keeping innovative activities at home, can contribute to their firms’ competitive advantage. Policy makers will find that first mover advantages may be as important for countries as for companies, since early and systematic efforts to attract a specific industry can generate a critical mass of investments that, over time, will make a location resistant to inducements offered by other countries.

Customer Reviews:
I've bought it twice!.......2007-05-07
I first bought this book as I considered opening a vintage goods shop with my mother. It was such a good resource, we each wanted our own copy. I found the information to be very useful as we mapped out our business plan and eventually opened our little shop.
The shop eventually closed when we had to give up our location, and cancer claimed Mom's life. I have been feeling the urge to have a shop again lately, and wanted to re-read the book. Apparently I've lent it to someone who never returned it to me! Mom's copy was nowhere to be found either, so I ordered another copy. A small price to pay for the information and guidance imparted within.
Turning Your Passion Into Profits.......2006-02-01
I just found this charming, useful and inspirational book on sale at a local book store. This collaborated effort by a Victoria Magazine contributor and successful small business owners like Debby DuBay, retired United States Air Force officer, was absolutely inspirational and had so many useful tips for a new business owner such as myself. I found information on my business plan and the small business administration, etc. In addition, I tried to contact many of the contributors to the book, but most I could not contact. I boldly contacted Ms. DuBay who enthusiastically provided me with many helpful tips on my new business! I love this book and highly recommend it for all! It is a timeless book!
Where is Victoria Magazine?.......2004-02-16
Written by the editors of Victoria Magazine who collaborated with successful women such as author, shop owner, retired Air Force Officer and Veteran Debby DuBay this book is a must. I have tried getting in contact with Victoria Magazine to no avail, but a few of the women they highlighted are still available to mentor women like myself. I am a professional woman who wanted to turn a passion into a career and Ms DuBay has been my mentor. Thanks to this book I was able to contact her. Highly recommend this book.
Inspirational, educational, enjoyable!.......2004-01-22
Wow! If you need a guide on how to turn your passion into a profession - I recommend this book. The experts have been used to provide input, and I love Debby DuBay's story in this book and in The Business of Bliss. The information provided about the Small Business Association is the best and I received a low documentation loan following the outline in this book! I owe my success to Janet and Ms DuBay. Highly recommend this book.
Inspirational, informational, must have book!.......2004-01-19
Purchased this book in Limoges Antiques Shop, Andover, MA from one of the contributors; Debby Dubay, ret, USAF and author of her own series on collecting Limoges porcelain. This book is remarkable and if you are considering starting your own business or turning your passion into a profession this book is a must. Debby DuBay credits The Business of Bliss and Victoria Magazine for her success - but her input was invaluable with the success of this publication.

Book Description
Published since 1999, and updated annually, this groundbreaking book is the standard against which all others are judged. Walt's book coined the term and ushered in the new millennium's era of the passionpreneur. Others followed, offering their own spin on the phenomenon. But none have matched Goodridge's timeless, practical yet spiritual take on finding one's purpose, harnessing one's passion, creating a product and selling it for profit!
Customer Reviews:
Why I'm Returning This Book.......2007-04-16
This book includes some excellent information. The first third gives the basics of going with your passion, and the rest of the book is about starting a business. Nothing new, but a nice little package.
But. The author lets us all know he's Jamaican-American (which we already know from the two photos on the cover). I refuse to call him an African-American because he is from Jamaica. His affirmations include "despite racism" and "because of racism," etc., which is completely and utterly unnecessary. The affirmations (and other advice) applies to everyone, but the author just can't drop the racism card.
I'm a native of a suburb of Los Angeles and I'm lily white. Here, we "European-Americans" can be accused of and called anything, with no repurcussions to the accuser or heckler. But heaven help any of us if we're socially and/or policially incorrect.
Another problem is the nasty habit the author has of putting stupid and childish little rhymes on every other page. He writes them, and seems to think they belong in a book on other people's passions. They don't. If this man's passion is poetry, let him write a book on poetry. Don't inflict nursey rhymes on us when we're trying to learn about business. It's annoying.
I hope the author reads this review. Yeah, we allllll know about slavery and understand the problem of racism. As a personal victim of physical racial abuse by African-Americans against myself, a "European-American," I'm offended by the references to racism in this book.
And, buddy, if you want to write nursery rhymes, stick them in a children's book and sell them to toddlers. As a former English professor, I find them unbelievably trite, sophormoric, and downright idiotic.
Usable, uplifting - no matter what your passion is.......2006-04-14
The chart on page 126 is worth the price of the book alone.
Combining your role as a "Creator", "Savior", "Guru" or "Guide" - according to the light personality profile in the book - it gives you an excellent idea trigger sheet that helps you create moneymaking products and services from your passion.
Combine your skills/gifts with products/services with values/benefits for "your chosen people" (your target group) and you'll have brainstormed a dozen of doable ideas in just 15 minutes.
The journaling exersices helps you find your passion, your skills - and "your chosen people".
Use this book, really use it, combined with the plotting and planning tools in Barbara Sher's "Wishcraft", to make a difference in your life... and perhaps in the world.
Everything you need to know!.......2006-04-05
I loved this book because it takes you through the process of having an idea and bringing it to life in tangible form. The author writes in simple, plain english. He writes as though you are a friend that he's talking to. That made it easy for me understand.
I particuarly appreciate chapters 8-10 which provide the nitty gritty details that one needs to know in order to start a business but it's provided in a very engaging and entertaining way. It's not boring or dry. Otherwise, I wouldn't have been able to get throught it!
Have Passion....Will Travel!.......2005-10-08
"Walt F.J. Goodridge has produced a special book: Turn Your Passion Into Profit....hits right to the center, the heart of God's communication with his children when Walt writes about Miracle Moments, Divine Ideas conceived in a place other than your own mind. One's passion is divine idea slowly raised to perfection, Walt intimates. Wonderful and informative book!"
The Original And Still the Best and Most Unique.......2005-08-17
I'm a big fan of Walt and his series of books. So
it's interesting to see the plethora of similar books
with pretty much the same title hitting the market
every year. Don't be fooled by the imitations. This
is still the most unique of all. No one has created
quite the same mix of spiritual principles and specific
steps to get you thinking the same way. As a client
of Walt's I can attest that he's got something unique
to offer more so than simply case studies. Get this
one and stick to it.

Committee meetings are so dry. We have a hard time getting people to attend when they are VOLUNTARY. If you can make the meeting fun...maybe more people would show up. I've read through this book and a couple others I have and adapt the games as is appropriate for each group and meeting. When you get people to laugh you often spark imagination and willingness to participate.

Book Description
Every year, hundreds of thousands of Americans and their families accept the challenge of living and working abroad. But many of these prospective expatriates have little idea--beyond the mystery of changing money and finding the consulate--of the extraordinary experience that awaits them. Upon their return, many discover they have undergone a dramatic personal transformation. Now in possession of great self-confidence and expanded horizons, they feel capable of handling greater challenges than they would have dreamed possible.
People who work abroad are off on an adventure--what Joseph Campbell called a hero's journey, complete with miraculous deeds to perform, inscrutable instructions, and important gifts to bring back. Joyce Sautters Osland, a veteran expatriate with fourteen years of experience abroad, tells the story of this modern-day Odyssey as it is lived by the working people who are exploring today's global frontier. Using Campbell's metaphor as a guide, Osland creates a pragmatic framework for understanding--and mastering--the predictable challenges of each stage in the expatriate journey.
The Adventure of Working Abroad won't prescribe what to pack or how to find the train station, but it will convey the genuine grittiness of the overseas experience--all the fear, excitement, and exhilaration, as well as the transformation that expatriates undergo as they rise to the challenges of unknown languages and customs, an alien landscape, and unfamiliar obstacles.
Here thirty-five seasoned expatriates tell in their own words of the unexpected perils and enormous opportunities, the turmoil and triumphs, of life in an exotic new world. Osland uses their personal stories to provide insights and important tips that will help expatriates adjust to diverse cultural norms, face new responsibilities and sudden autonomy, and better equip themselves for the difficulties of repatriation.
Osland also explores why U.S. companies are not as proficient a
Customer Reviews:
thorough description of expat challenges; lousy metaphor.......2000-12-07
Osland shines at listing all the facets of an expatriate's life and evaluating the prospects of different personalities to handle extended work stays abroad. Speaking as a frequent ex-pat who did considerable time in the Balkans, I can confirm that she hits plenty of issues and their corresponding anecdotes dead on (i.e., some still bug me in a good way :-)-- successful strategies as well as failures of immersion in the target culture, adjusting on the return home with a more complex self-identity, identifying areas of personal change and growth, to name but a few.
Osland's other great strength lies in her words of caution to corporate HQ's: they should learn to treat their expat employees better, especially on return, as well as figure out better and innovative ways to incorporate their skill sets and changed personalities.
The downsides of the book are at least two: one, the metaphor of the hero myth gets downright tiring in repetition and doesn't really add much. Second, if the introduction and appendix are any indication, that metaphor was used to justify a research project, to "see whether ... [it] was important to expats..." and if it was indeed "a useful metaphor." In a word, fluff. Nobody I know in social sciences designs research and expects it to be taken seriously if its only probative value is to undergird a personal literary whim. Designing operationalizable logic and testing is hard work, after all. What Osland was really after, but doesn't say so, is a description of common characteristics/issues and categories across expats. Her sample of 35 people is too small for statistical use and carries no qualitative logic as an alternative approach for small "n" studies, so her survey conclusions are at best tentative, but nonetheless somewhat interesting.
Still, I should repeat that as a description of the issues that face prospective and current/past expats, it's a useful, crisp, motivating and nostalgic read (my copy was at the library, so I don't know offhand how much it's worth at places other than Amazon). I'd give it 3.5 stars, but that ain't an option, so I'll round it up to 4.
Thought-provoking treatment from a sociological perspective.......1998-08-21
Thought-provoking treatment of aspects of living and working abroad from a sociological perspective. Very descriptive of styles of expatriate living with a focus on the success of those who treat the experience as an adventure in another culture rather than isolating themselves from the country's culture in an expatriate community. I'd recommend this for anyone evaluating his or her own suitability for living and working abroad.

Geez- this title just shipped to the wholesale distributor Hal Leonard (who supplies Amazon.com) a few weeks ago, and already Amazon has a listing that is screwed up! Retail price is $40, not $35. The book is paperback, not hardcover. It was released in March of 2003, not November.
