Finally making money in the Information Age makes sense........1999-06-29
"Engines of Prosperity" is a startling book. With a few punchy, key themes, it paints a whole new paradigm. Suddenly, making money in the Information Age makes sense.
The book gives a new perspective that sees the forest made from the trees. Beginning with the title, it challenges the reader to ponder first the right questions, and then look for his particular answers.
The given broad answers are a context for the particular answers. The actions of modern technology leaders are then analyzed, and the successes and failures seem self evident.
Most satisfying is the uninterrupted transition from theory (economics), to policy (e.g. patent laws), to practice (business). The reader is engaged in a lively, readable journey across disciplines without missing a step.
This book is phenomenal! It is a must-read for CEOs........1999-05-13
This new book, Engines of Prosperity, can best be described in one word -- PHENOMENAL!!!
Charles W. Olsen, President and CEO, ARCS International, Inc.
This book provides a provocative view........1999-03-26
Engines of Prosperity provides a provocative view of how the global business landscaping is changing. This terrain, once the purview of U.S. enterprises, is rapidly evolving in new directions that involve unfamiliar operation structures and principals.
This work highlights how successful businesses in the next century MUST be different and how knowledge can become their lifeblood.
Marvin L. Patterson, President, Innovation Resultants International, Los Altos, CA
This is truly a breakthrough work.......1999-03-26
I like this book a lot. It is truly a breakthrough work.
Not only does it show how to build prosperous businesses, it also provides guidance for improving the quality of personal life and even society.
Dr. Ronald F. Ennis, President, Pathways, Portland, OR
It's about life..........1999-03-26
Engines of Prosperity is an unusual business book. What's it about?

Book Description
Reid, Kerr, and Miller seek to redress the lack of systematic, generalizable research on women's representation in state and municipal bureaucracies by focusing specifically on the representation of female managers in high-level policy and decision-making positions in their agencies or departments. Their primary interest is in examining the distribution of women and men in state and municipal administrative and professional positions by agency and over time (from 1987 through 1997) in order to determine if, first, agency missions are associated with glass walls and glass ceilings, and, second, whether, relative to white women, African American women and Latinas have made progress in laying claim to a greater share of managerial positions in public-sector agencies. Their analysis reveals a richly textured and complicated set of factors and interrelationships that vary widely across different policy areas, agency contexts, and levels of government. They show continued patterns of underrepresentation in agencies with regulatory and distributive policy commitments while showing some improvements in those agencies that tend to be traditionally populated by women, health, welfare, and social services, for example.

Book Description
Legal problems abound in the information society. Electronic commerce, copyright, privacy, illegal and harmful content, taxes, wiretapping governments face an enormous challenge to meet the advent of the Internet and ICT with a flexible, up-to-date, and adequate legal framework. Yet one aspect makes this challenge even more daunting: internationalisation. Law is still to a great extent based on nation states, but the information society is above all a borderless and global society. Territoriality and national sovereignty clash with the need for a global approach to address ICT-law issues. Should states leave everything to the global market, or should they intervene to protect vital national interests? If they create regulations, should these reflect the rules of the physical world? How can one enforce national rules in a world where acts take place somewhere' in Cyberspace? This book presents the positions on these issues of the governments of the Netherlands, Germany, France, the UK, and the US, as well as of international organisations. How do they think about co-regulation, law enforcement, harmonisation, international cooperation, and alternative dispute resolution? How do they deal with applicable law and online contracts, privacy, international liability of Internet providers, and electronic signatures? What are the implications of the European Electronic Commerce Directive and the draft Crime in Cyberspace convention? Any legal framework that is to fit the global information society must take into account internationalisation. This volume shows to what extent governments are meeting this challenge.

Southern Bus Boy.......2006-06-13
I have been wanting to open a restaurant for several years now. I work in a seafood restaurant in a northern Mississippi town, and I don't know, I guess serving people is just in my blood.
I am a big Howard Cannon fan. I do wish that the book was a little more detailed, but I believe he really loves the business. If you want to open a restaurant, buy this book.
I'd also recommend Running a Restaurant for Dummies.
A must for new and veteran restaurant operators.......2005-08-07
Mr. Cannon covered all issues necessary to help with any suprises in the restaurant business. I continue to use it whenever problems arise.
Readable book with common-sense and valuable expertise.......2005-07-17
I have no links of any kind to any party involved in producing or selling this book. I came to this book with only low-level restaurant work knowledge, but with the idea I might set one up. So far it's only an idea. Though I have run businesses, the management and ownership side of the restaurant business is new to me.
I know that if I go into restaurants I will be competing with experienced operators. I will need to try and catch up quickly (or lose money and make errors). One important lesson my business experience has taught me is that advice from those in the know is pure gold.
So, considering a restaurant business, I bought this book.
In my opinion it is first-class. It's well-written, clear, comprehensive, quite entertaining, and the points he makes are good solid management points. It's just what I was looking for.
Basic Knowledge.......2005-03-31
I was expecting a little more detail than what this book delivered. It mostly goes through basic business information that can be found on the internet. I thought the timeline, forms, and employee scheduling sections were useful. However, I guess since it is a "Complete Idiot's Guide," I should not have expected it to be more than basic.
Just the Basics.......2003-09-05
For someone coming in with no knowledge at all of the restaurant business, this is not a bad general guide.
I was a little disapointed however at the terse treatment the author gave to money processing in the restaurant.
There are many types of restaurant computer systems(POS) and lots of systems to accept checks and credit cards. Since in most restaurants these payment forms far outdistance cash, it would be helpful to include some of the basic credit card processing provisions and information about terminals. Merchants are misguided and ripped off all the time on check and credit cards sytems that are not proper for the specific restaurant. The topic deserves a chapter, not just a few paragraphs.

Book Description
The story opens with 10 characters, called the Go-Getters, who are about to end a trekking vacation in Nepal. The group consists of five recent university graduates, four others presently working but looking for a job change, and one recently laid-off worker. Guiding the group is a retired professional and former corporate executive from Wall Street, who unexpectedly becomes their mentor.
The Go-Getters have one thing in common - they all face a challenging job search situation back at home. For the five recent graduates, they are woefully unaware of the issues facing them concerning the job hunt. Yet, with a diploma finally in hand, they are thrust into the market and now face the dilemma of how to successfully find a good job. For the four currently employed, though they have a few years of work experience, they find themselves in an unacceptable working situation and are eager to change careers. For the one who recently got a pink slip, though she has three years of experience, she faces an uncertain situation combined with emotional stress and a super competitive job market.
Compounding their collective condition is the fact that the most influential factors in their lives have provided little job planning advice. Their parents lacked wide industry knowledge to give sufficient guidance. Some didn't invest sufficient time to utilize university resources that were available. And most of their professors couldn't offer much insight, since they themselves possessed virtually no industry experience.
While all the Go-Getters are motivated to find a new job, they actually have very little idea of how to implement a successful job hunt. Sure, they know how to prepare a resume and be interviewed, they know how to take an aptitude and a personality test, and they know how to job search using newspaper classifieds, job websites, and job fairs. But these days, almost every other job hunter knows this too.
Fortunately, they find a mentor in their trekking guide. He provides real-world, practical advice about the job market and ways to achieve a competitive advantage. This is a story of how the 10 Go-Getters apply market-driven job-hunting advice to their respective situations.
"Though important, what good are a well-written resume and impressive interview technique if you can't find a company in a position to hire you?" asks Sam, the principle character in THE GO-GETTERS. But wouldn't it be great for job hunters to find companies ready to hire, BEFORE they advertise?
Customer Reviews:
Great book.......2004-11-08
THE GO-GETTERS: Market Driven to Career Success is an outstanding resource for people looking for a great career match. When I started my search I sent out a bunch of resumes to ads in the paper, and don't recall getting one response - not a targeted campaign but desperate scramble. After I followed the approach the author prescribes I ended up with 4 offers that showed up at the same time. This book will relieve the stress many feel when looking for a new position.
Best Way to Find Your Dream Job.......2004-10-27
I've been through my share of job searches during my career, so I pretty much knew the traditional routine of searching the classifieds and on-line job sites, networking with friends and business associates, etc. However, when I read The Go-Getters it was really eye-opening and refreshing. My job search approach and techniques were so outdated! This book helped me to focus my career goals and to implement a proactive job search that I'm sure gave me an advantage over my competition. The main precept of the book is that your job search strategy should be formulated like a business strategy in the sense that it is market-driven. As the author explains this concept and how to implement it, I kept thinking, "Wow, this makes so much sense!" Besides offering valuable, unique information for job searchers, I would recommend this book because it is presented in a way that is entertaining and easy to understand.
Get it, Got it, GO!!!!.......2004-10-02
My job search since graduating at UCLA has been one big disappointment.
For the few interesting jobs offered at my university career fair, I faced tons of competition. I didn't even get a 2nd interview once. I spent 6 months looking for a job after graduation. Few jobs, however, interested me especially in the newspaper classifieds. Whenever I found a cool job in Monster.com, HotJobs, or another job website, I NEVER EVER received back a reply. A friend found me a job, but the pay was so little it wasn't worth accepting.
Before I started my job search, I attend a few career workshops at school and read the popular career books like What Color Is Your Parachute and Job Search for Dummies. While I realize learning about resumes and interviews is important, I quickly learned that these tools don't help you find potential employers.
Then a friend recommended that I read the book THE GO-GETTERS: Market Driven To Career Success. Once I read the introduction and first chapter, I knew this book was totally different, it's truly something special. It's not even a typical "how to" reference book. It's a story of 10 job hunters and how they find career success.
I must say since I have read the book and implemented some of the strategies, I have 3 job offers all in the area that I was searching for. Now the question is which one do I take. They are all so great!!!
The author, David Lee, who I've never heard of before, has crafted a very special book about the job hunt. The guides are extremely practical and gives incredible insights on what I most wanted to know. I know I'm repeating what's said in the Amazon.com description, but it's true, THE GO-GETTERS teaches you how to find companies ready to hire before they advertise in the newspapers and job websites.
The book teaches the most important aspects of the job search as far as I'm concerned - how to increase career alternatives, how to find companies ready to hire that don't advertise vacancies or recruit at job fairs, how to find interesting companies I've never heard of before, how to approach companies in a business-like manner, and how to understand what companies look for in an interview.
THE GO-GETTERS' main theme is to elevate the job search from just treating it like a "job" to treating the job search with a market-driven business mentality. This makes complete sense to me since the job search is such a competitive process.
All I can say to the author is, "thanks!"
I never had a successful job hunt until I read THE GO-GETTERS. And reading it only took me a couple hours - the book is only 120 pages. Other career books are 300, 400, 500 pages. Who has time to read a reference book when you're looking for a job!

Laura Day has sold millions of copies of Practical Intuition and continues her advice here with tips for improving your career using your own intuitive skills. She says that people are more apt to use their intuition about commonplace issues than they are about investment or business practices, a horrible waste of intuitive powers. Through dozens of exercises, Day describes how you can boost your intuitive power, "become" your competition, and better predict the future. Day makes no guarantees that you'll pick the next blue-chip bond or invent the next wheel, but she does assert that your life can't help but improve if you take her ideas to heart. This book is a combination of Jon Kabat-Zinn's, mindfulness meditation theories and What Color is Your Parachute-ish self-reflection.

Day shows you how to bring forth your intuition, make it stronger, and make it wok for you. And the more you practice it, the better the results. Customer Reviews:
powerful individual with good ideas.......2007-05-09
Laura Day is on to something. One might feel a bit overwhelmed by the "new age" tone of the book but pay attention. She has a powerful perspective. I think this book and "Welcome to Your Crisis" are even better than "The Circle"..they have parctical, hands on advice. Not necessarily for what I would term a crisis - more a dilemma or feeling "stuck".
Getting the Right Brain in on the Wealth Game.......2007-03-18
This is an ideal book for those who are entrepreneurial and in a position professionally where the skill of intuitive ability is demanded. I often think that Richard Branson and Madonna are highly intuitive in their enterprises. If you want to have both brains focusing on wealth creating, Laura Day provides excercises to get the ball rolling. Learn to make your right brain and left brain best friends to seize opportunities daily.
A good book.......2006-07-07
This is a good book it's longer then some of her other ones and it has a lot more exercises in it then some of her other books so unless you have a lot of time on your hands it will take a while to read it. But, other then that it is a good book and I did enjoy it. I'm going to start to read practical intuition in love.
Reframes Thinking on Intuition.......2002-07-15
From a practical standpoint, Day separates thinking of emotions, pure logic and reasoning from intuition. She defines this intuitive thinking as logical and, essential for success. Her thoughts are quite compelling. Rather than the pure gut feeling or abstractions that generally constitute intuition, Day develops an understanding of how this skill can be cultivated from both thought and feeling. Rather than an illogical urge, it becomes a developed sense. The exercises and examples extensively developed empower the reader to adapt this skill for personal achievement. A good read.
Practical as promised.......2002-04-12
As promised in the title this book is highly practical with easy to understand exercises that train your intuition. Doing the exercises unlocks your intuitive potential and answers questions you didn't even know you were asking.
Highly recommended!

Book Description
Intuition is commonly regarded as a flash of insight, a gut feeling or (to some) a psychic hit, but it is actually much more than any of these. It is a universal mental capacity for the direct acquisition of knowledge apart from reasoning, memory and the five senses. Throughout history intuition, drawing on an innate reservoir in the deeper levels of the unconscious mind, has enabled man's greatest acts of creativity, insight, inspiration and understanding. Over the last century the intuitive process has gradually become somewhat better understood and accepted, and can now be seen as an immense human potential for acquiring understanding, knowledge and insight.
Opening the Inner Eye presents the latest discoveries in the workings of intuition and its applications to individual daily life and in all professional areas that depend upon information and knowledge for their advances. Most of these new findings were obtained at the Center for Applied Intuition, a San Francisco organization that functioned from 1977 to 1993, through interaction with a team of expert intuitivesindividuals who developed their natural intuitive ability into a refined skill. This book describes the broad conditions under which intuition can be used to access almost unlimited information, and the results of several applicational experiments in counseling, business consulting, science, medicine and other fields.
Customer Reviews:
The best book available on intuition!.......2003-06-25
I believe this is the best single book available on intuition and its applications. While there are many books out on the subject, no one book other than William Kautz's provides as knowledgable and comprehensive a balance between a solid examination of the nature of the subject and a rich description of how it can be used. ... Kautz has had more experience than anyone I know in using expert intuitives to successfully bring their unusual information accessing abilities to problem solving tasks in the real world.

Book Description
Private enterprise is rapidly taking hold as the world's dominant economic paradigm, but business scandals, environmental degradation, and rampant poverty are stark reminders that business alone - unregulated and unsupervised - will not solve the world's problems. Using a unique market-based approach and a socially inclusive definition of wealth, Corporations and the Public Interest offers a refreshing new system for assessing corporations' real commitment to the public. Steven Lydenberg's plan includes strategies for steering companies in socially responsible directions and imposing costs on those that neglect their responsibilities to the community.
Customer Reviews:
A clear and eloguent guide to a difficult subject .......2005-05-11
Corporations and the Public Interest is very helpful in understanding the structure of the investment side of CSR. I finished Corporations and the Public Interest understanding how to achieve CSR though pressure from shareholders and the investment community, quite an achievement in a single short read.
The book's contention that altering the balance between business and government to make companies more accountable grounded this reader in the author's underlying thesis, creating the tension that makes the book so absorbing while maintaining objectivity. The author makes a compelling case that the most efficient way to change behavior is by establishing government standards and measurement, with tangible penalties administered through the investment marketplace. Examples of successful re-balancing, as with CRA, show how effective that method can be. In addition, Corporations and the Public Interest cites European examples in government regulation, data collection and rating, and points out how remarkable their success with CSR has been.
The tone is optimistic while maintaining objectivity. I closed the book thinking that corporations doing the right thing was not only inevitable, but would happen in the very short term. As the author puts it in his very clear and eloquent style, "Distinctions between socially responsible investing and the mainstream financial world will blur, as will the lines between CSR and the responsible management of a firm."
