The Home Business Bible is at least ten years out of date; and those years have been so eventful in the field of home business that it feels a century out of date. I have no use at all for it. I cannot imagine why anybody else does, unless they live in a very small town where things don't change over the years.

Looked everywhere to find a book as good as this one.......2007-05-08

i ordered several books on how to conduct telephone surveys. most of them were way too theoretical. this book however brings down the art and science of conducting phone surveys to a level which is easy to understand and very practical in nature.
highly recommend this for anyone who wants to learn this incredible research tool and needs to learn more about it.

Excellent work -- informative and scholarly.......2001-09-18

As someone who is not an economist, I am in no position to rate Tan's arguments vis-a-vis the positions of other economists. However, as an introduction to the complexities of the 1998 meltdown in Asian economies, this book is first-rate. It is very well organized.

Dealing with the crisis chronologically, and country-by-country, Tan is able to illustrate patterns that span the whole event, and unique events within each country. He treats the responses of each country, and does not shirk from providing a sober and often scathing assessment of the attitudes and policy responses of individual countries. His political analyses are just as useful, since the implications of the event have so much to do with the political makeup of individual countries, and their political and financial institutions.

Market data is used extensively to support his claim. There is a tremendous and often overwhelming plethora of data. However, if one is just looking for an identification of major patterns and analyses, Tan illustrates this very clearly within his chapters.

This paper provides a quantitative investigation of the East Asian crisis of 1997-1999. We stress two essential features of the crisis. First, the crisis was a regional phenomenon; the depth and severity of the crisis were exacerbated by a large decline in regional demand. Second, the predominance of the US dollar in the pricing of export goods in Asia (which we document empirically) led to a powerful internal propagation effect of the crisis within the region, contributing greatly to the decline in regional trade flows. We construct a multi-country macroeconomic model which contains these two features and show that it can do a good job in accounting for the response of the main macroeconomic aggregates in Korea, Malaysia and Thailand during the crisis. A key advantage of our model is that it can explain the very slow response of exports to the large real exchange rate depreciations that took place during the crisis. Without the regional dimension and dollar pricing of exports, we find that the model fails to account for the depth and severity of the crisis.

This paper explores the impact of the East Asian crisis of 1997-1998 on foreign exchange markets and purchasing power parity within the region. While many studies have attempted to test for PPP prior to these events, there has been little opportunity to test for this long run phenomenon in the post-crisis period. This study addresses the issue by applying Inoue [J. Econometrics 90 (1999) 215] and Johansen, Mosconi, and Nielsen [Econometrics J. 3 (2000) 216] cointegration procedures to bilateral exchange rates deflated using consumer price indices. Along with endogenously determining a structural break at the time of the crisis, the empirical results shed light upon the significance of the East Asian crisis on long-run PPP within the region. The findings are generally supportive of PPP with the crisis leading to only shifts in long-run trends. However, the results are not homogenous across all countries which is partially attributed to how individual countries handled the crisis.

From the author: Picking the top five competitors in each of the ten top exports of indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, South Korea and Thailand, we constructed a competitor and product weighted real exchange rate index for each country. Because these countries tied their currencies closely to the U.S. dollar, their real exchange rates appreciated substantially with the devaluation of the yuan (1990-94) and the yen (1995-96) against the U.S. dollar. But since there was no region-wide deterioration in the current account, they were unlikely to be the cause of the currency collapses. A fundamentals-based logit model of currency collapse fitted the pooled data of 57 countries satisfactorily. It was unable to predict (out-of-sample) the 1997 Asian financial crisis, suggesting that financial contagion rather than weak fundamentals is the more plausible explanation for the crisis.

During the 1990s, several studies found evidence for a ''yen bloc'', a significant and strengthening relationship between the Japanese yen and East Asian currencies possibly due to regional trade and investment by Japan. It appears that the Australian dollar now plays a similar role in the East Asian region, and the linkages between the Australian dollar and the Asian currencies show as much support for a ''koala bloc'' as a ''yen bloc''. This study concludes that the US dollar appears to have declined in importance in post-1997 crisis East Asia, while Australia and Japan are becoming increasingly important regional influences.
