Online presentation hides mistakes........2005-05-07
Students that use this textbook along with their online college course should be aware that the online material has many mistakes and shouldn't be relied on to pass the course. Also some pages provided online is not printed in the textbook. You have to have the online "campuscompass" to complete the course. Some of the support pretest don't provide answers - so you don't know if you understand the material. Very shallow college material.
Book Description
Asking the old questions, according to authors Dick Whitney and Melissa Giovagnoli, means getting the same old answers. And that can be deadly for any group or company that wants to move ahead. Instead, they offer 75 outrageous, thought-provoking questions that clean out the corporate cobwebs and get workers’ minds working in new and productive directions. Drawing from their own experiences as top international business consultants, Whitney and Giovagnoli provide field-tested "cage-rattlers" that can help improve leadership, resolve on-the-job conflicts, stimulate innovation, facilitate better communication, and much more. Additionally, the guide benefits individuals as much as it does teams, small groups, small businesses, and larger corporations.

75 Cage Rattling Questions to Change the Way You Work: Shake-Em-Up Questions to Open Meetings, Ignite Discussion, and Spark Creativity
by Dick Whitney, Melissa Giovagnoli
This book has been around for almost a decade. I have found it to be a very good book as it teaches readers how to break the normal thinking patterns in the mind. To use a popular neuro-linguistic term, how to do a 'pattern interrupt'!
Patterning is one of three principal operating principles of the human mind. (The other two: selective recognition & self-organising.)
The good thing about patterning is that you don't have to relearn the same pattern if you are comfortable with it or it works for you, e.g. riding a bike or driving a car or using a piece of software. The bad thing about it is that you may get stuck with it, especially when the old pattern doesn't work any more. In the same vein, the patterning makes it hard for a new idea to get fair treatment in your mind.
Edward de Bono, the father of lateral thinking puts it very beautifully: "The mind is habitually uncreative - it is usually preoccupied with organising masses of incoming data into convenient patterns. Once the pattern is established, then the mind tends to rely upon that pattern in future situations, in order to facilitate decision making & action in an otherwise complex world."
Dr David Perkins, author of 'Outsmarting IQ: The Emerging Science of Learnable Intelligence', explains further: "...As we go through life, puzzle out problems, & gain experience, we store up patterns that work well for us. In meeting new situations, we automatically try to make a match to what we know & select a pattern from our storehouse that might apply. This matching process gets influenced not only by what patterns we have stored up, but also by our goals, prejudices & passions."
So, how does one break old patterns or get out of complacency? On workable method is to pose to ourselves challenging, thought-provoking questions. Better still, wild & crazy ones!
Why such questions?
Well, for one thing, they set off processional effects that have great impacts beyond your imagination. Questioning your limitations is what tears down the walls in life - in business, in relationships. I believe growth & progress are often preceded by new & challenging questions.
This book offers 75 outrageous, thought-provoking questions that can clean out the cobwebs in your minds & get you working in new & productive directions.
The essence of the book is not so much using the 75 field-tested "cage rattlers" to shatter the complacency. I feel that the primary objective of the two authors is to make you fully aware of the pitfalls & dangers of patterning in our minds & to encourage you to constantly challenge your assumptions!
This book has 75 short chapters, fully corresponding to the self-described 'cage rattling' questions. Each chapter opens with the question, provides you with some ways to use the question, shares a war story & gives you further tips for using the particular question.
Frankly, I would encourage readers to formulate your own list of 'cage rattling' questions to be used in your own different situation. Certainly, you can make use of the book's questions as a springboard.
Sometimes, the questions to be asked don't even have to be 'cage rattling'. All you need to do is to reframe the question. For example, in problem solving, I always like to ask myself, 'what else can I do?' instead of 'what can I do?'; 'what has not yet happened here?' instead of 'what has happend here?'...
Questions and More!.......2006-05-06
This book has 75 short chapters, one for each of the self-described "cage rattling questions." Each chapter opens with the question, provides you 3-5 ways to use the question, shares a "war story" and gives you some tips for using this particular question.
I have long been a proponent of, and encouraged people to build lists of questions they could use in different situations. This book would be a good place to start your list if you are a trainer, consultant, facilitator, or team leader. You will find many of these questions useful to spark conversations, trigger new ideas and build synergy.
Look at it this way... if you got only one great question that you use to great advantage it would be worth the cost of the book. I'm sure you will get at least several more than that
You can come up with these.......2000-12-19
I wouldn't disagree with any of the other reviews, but it's a matter of personal preference where I spend my money. I wouldn't spend it on this book. Once you focus on what you want to accomplish (ie., "shake-em-up"), you could come up with a lot of these challenges. "If your company were a car...If your company were a footbal team.." and so on. In a word, analogy. I've found in workshops I've conducted, whether they're on Creativity, Problem-Solving, Leadership, or other topics, I'll use this "provocative" technique maybe once or twice in a full day. Beyond that the novelty has worn off.
Much of the text that accompanies each question is also a little repetitious - the "war stories" all start to sound alike.
Actually useful.......2000-09-09
I was surprised at how useful this book is. When I first looked at it, I thought the questions looked obvious and simplistic, but they work very well to start off team meeting sessions. The authors provide lots of good ideas about how to use them, and little anecdotes to inspire you to believe that the questions can actually change the way you do business. I've used them for meeting kick-offs and to jump-start moribund discussions.

As social, political, and business forces struggle to come to terms with new communications technology, innovation doesn't progress--it freezes up. This sociopolitical and economic gridlock is what Neuman, McKnight, and Solomon are calling the "Gordian Knot." The authors examine how similar gridlock has happened in the past with other new technologies; for example, during the development of the railroad, among the telephone companies, and, more recently, with the international and inter-industrial wrestling matches over High Definition Television. The introduction of each of these technologies has involved a clash of economic interests among industrial giants or would-be giants--all of which have struggled to control access, standards, and proprietary technology in the emerging industry.
Meanwhile, government has tried to contend with the issue of how much control to exert over standards, technology, and rate structures in order to protect both the industries and the consumers. As the book explains, the resulting gridlock has often resulted in new industries taking decades to become mature, efficient, and able to operate profitably without unfairly exploiting their customers. In the minds of the authors, with modern telecommunications becoming an increasingly vital part of our daily lives and businesses, we can't afford such a tangled knot.
Neuman, McKnight, and Solomon propose cutting the Gordian Knot of gridlock with Open Communications Infrastructure (OCI), a system that they feel best combines the benefits of government oversight with those of laissez-faire. OCI is a system of largely free-market competition with just enough governmental oversight to ensure that competitors stay within bounds. Those bounds are described by the four essential qualities of the infrastructure: open architecture, open access, universal access, and flexible access.
The authors present their arguments in a clear, precise style and with a dry sense of humor. The many case histories illustrate the ironies of human folly and help you take a second look at our technological progress of the past 150 years, clearly stating that we could have progressed much further by now. Neuman, McKnight, and Solomon conclude by showing that this gridlock will have to change if we wish for the cybercultural revolution to proceed according to our dreams.
Book Description
In a broad account accessible to generalist and specialist alike, the authors--social scientists as well as technologists--address the current national debate about the development of a National Information Infrastructure. They locate the debate in its historical context and outline a bold vision of an open communications infrastructure that will cut through the political gridlock that threatens this "information highway."
The authors detail what is wrong with the political process on National Information Infrastructure policymaking and assess how different media systems (telecommunications, radio, television broadcasting, and the like) were originally established, spelling out the technological assumptions and organizational interests on which they were based and showing why the old policy models are now breaking down. This analysis leads logically to a policy proposal for a reformed regulatory structure that builds and protects meaningful competition but abandons its role as arbiter of tariffs and definer of the public interest.

Great introduction to telecom policy issues and history.......2003-09-23
This was the first book I read about information and telecommunications policy, and it made me feel like I was not alone, lost in the confusing jungle of telecommunications: the historical baggage this field carries with it makes it difficult for any author to approach. However, Gordian Knot does a good job: comparing the present with the past (railways) and offering a solution that would really promote competition in communications. This book was read for an intro course on telecommunications policy, and is something I would suggest all people interested in the debates surrounding the development of infrastructure and competition in telecommunications should read. To supplement, I would suggest: Technologies of Freedom - Pool, and Brock's 'Telecom Policy for the Information Age'.

Practical Tips.......2001-02-25
This books gives tons of very practical tips for telecommuters; from coping with new technology to managing your family and work time. I especially liked the additional value of having other references for on-line sources for additional information.
In fact, a lot of the information is good not only for telecommuters, but anyone having to deal with the current issues facing the worker in an electronic workplace.
All in all, it was an easy read, with very little technical jargon. It presents a sometimes humorous look at the problems that can arise when you aren't in the office their solutions.

Book Description
Gary Rivlin tells the story of Ron Conway, the man who has placed more bets on Internet start-ups than anyone eise in Silicon Valley. Conway is a reader-friendly way into the realm of angel financing, where independently wealthy investors link up with companies just as they are being born.
The Godfather of Silicon Valley takes you into this fascinating world on the edges of the financial universe, where the pace is frantic, the story lines are rich, and every moment is perilous.
Customer Reviews:
Reads like a novel!.......2002-07-06
The dot-com rise and fall that you can read in a couple of sittings. Rivlin does a really good job of telling the story of the madness of the dot-com bubble, and then its precipitous fall, through the story of one man, Ron Conway, who invested in more Internet startups (240) than anyone else. Rivlin has a good eye for detail, and his descriptions of some of the crazier ideas that Conway funded alone are worth the price of the book. You know things are going to end badly but that's the fun of this book, Rivlin somehow manages to make it all suspensful.
Would make a great article for the New York Times Magazine.......2002-06-06
A fine attempt, but it comes up lacking. First, the book is short and reads quick. I had the feeling that this would have been better off being a Washington Post 3 part series (boring series though). All characters are sketchy and I never found myself caring about any of them. I found dot.bomb a much better read.
A great read!.......2001-12-19
Rivlin has written a marvelous, entertaining peek into the strange alice-in-wonderland world of high tech finance. Rivlin didn't allow himself to be co-opted by his subjects and the result is a frank and honest view that will make some insiders wince, but delight anyone trying to understand what makes Silicon Valley tick.
Can't help but watch the car wreck..........2001-12-12
This is a fast, easy read. Perhaps it's a bit cruel to kick a man while he is down. But it sure is something to watch the action as he accelerates down the dot-com highway and then crash horribly.
Read this book, learn very little, but what's a few hours in a down economy?
Excellent Book on the Burst of the Internet Bubble.......2001-12-11
I have read all four of Rivlin's books and whether he is writing about Chicago's first black mayor Harold Washington or Bill Gates, I have always found his reportage highly skilled and his writing, while occasionally biting in style, is descriptive, crisp and easy-to-read. That would apply to "King of the Angels" as well. The fact that Conway "invited" Rivlin to follow him for a few days should not preclude Rivlin from including "warts" in his portrayal of Conway, as the previous reviewer suggests. I look forward to Rivlin's next book.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent phone skills training.......2003-05-02
We learned quite a bit from this book. In particular, the sections on building the presentation was real good. It's a book all phone sales people should read.
PERFECT FOR INSIDE SALES REPS!.......2003-04-22
We were very happy with Ring Up Phone Sales. I've
bought several books about phone sales. This one
presented everything clearly - I took notes the whole
way through. It talked about selling benefits, asking
questions, presenting a story. I felt the training was
very effective! It was easy to listen to and really
packed with info.
A Helpful Tool.......2003-03-30
Coen's audiobook gets straight to the point. There's no mindless babbling about some new magical technique that will increase sales 2000%. Coen covers the ground telephone sales reps and their bosses must know inside out. This is one of the best teaching tools I've come across because it's done in a straightforward manner that everyone can understand.
Excellent , concise and very helpful!.......2003-03-29
Our company found Ring Up Phone Sales to be very useful. We took notes throughout the audio book and turned those notes into mini-workshops for all our sales reps. It was concise and clear and outlined very well. Simple methods that we started using on the telephone right away!
GARBAGE!! BUYER BEWARE!.......2003-01-16
This tape sounds like it was recorded on a five-dollar tape recorder (pops, hisses, and low-quality stretched tape sound). More over, the information is blatantly inaccurate. Dan Coen can't even accurately differentiate a "feature" from a "benefit." He actually explains them in reverse on the tape! To add insult to injury, the delivery of the material is all wrong. Dan Coen is telling you how to communicate effectively over the phone AND HE CAN'T EVEN COMMUNICATE EFFECTIVELY ON THE TAPE! What an insult! Instead of speaking at an understandable conversational pace of approximately 150 WPM this guy is blowing the doors off my ears at a pace of more than 250 WPM. Finally the material is barely Sales 101. The sales ideas and suggestions haven't even been competently applied to relate to phone sales. A MAJOR DISAPPOINTMENT. I took a chance and got burned. I should have just tossed my money into the TRASH (which is a good place for this work). Beware of this self-proclaimed subject matter expert. FAKE ALERT! Not even worthy of the 1 star I had to give it. If you buy it, you will not see stars but you will see red.
Book Description
World hunger, jobs, the overall economic prospects of developing and developed countries alike are all being influenced by the international negotiations about trade, agriculture, services, investment and intellectual property rights going on at the World Trade Organization (WTO). Based on interviews with the participants, this remarkable book lifts the shroud of secrecy surrounding these ostensibly democratic negotiations.
What emerges is a disturbing account entirely at odds with the official picture of a rules-based consensus emerging out of multilateral trade discussions in which all WTO member countries are equal participants. In reality:
· Closed doors rather than open access and public information is the preferred mode of negotiation;
· Decisions are often being made without the full approval of developing countries;
· The tiny delegations of the poorest and smallest countries have only a limited capacity to calculate in advance the implications of what they are being asked to sign up to;
· More seriously still, there are instances of illegitimate pressures and inducements being offered by the US and EU delegations - including threats to report non-compliant Third World delegates to their superiors, and hints that aid to countries refusing to kow-tow may be withheld.
The revelations contained in this book are of enormous importance to all those concerned that international institutions should be more transparent and democratic, and that the rules being developed for the world economy should primarily be geared to solving the pressing humanitarian problems of poverty, hunger, jobs and improvements in the standards of living of all those being left behind by the process of globalization.

The economic prospects of developing and developed countries alike are being shaped by the international negotiations in progress at the World Trade Organization (WTO) about trade, services, investment and intellectual property rights. Based on interviews with people actually participating, this book lifts the shroud of secrecy surrounding these negotiations. What emerges is a disturbing picture that contradicts commonly held assumptions about the WTO, namely, that negotiations don't allow full participation by poor countries; that the EU and US dominate the agenda; that poor countries are often betrayed in the final outcomes.

Disturbing and sadly, true.......2004-01-05
The main thing which affected me most about this book is the fact that the world for the first time is not being run by nations, or by the unity of nations, but by corporations. These corporations are found everywhere, from the air that we breathe to the presidential campaigns. compelling stuff.

This book examines how Japan has changed its economic relationship with East Asia since the mid 1990's by looking at its commitments to import relief, regional financial and industrial transformations, and regionalism. While the Japanese government has taken proactive initiatives to sustain the sound development of the regional economies, it has become more strategic in preserving its interests in the rapid industrial transformation. The book includes valuable information about Japan's trade remedy measures, Sino-Japan relations, and regional integration in East Asia.

Book Description
This book provides an incredibly detailed and thorough account of how Vietnam's dependence on Soviet aid during the 1960s and 1970s sustained and yet ultimately undermined the centrally-planned economy. Foreign aid provided most of the resources which, in the context of an under-developed agrarian economy, permitted planned industrialization. Yet, as in other socialist countries, chronic shortages emerged and, particularly when aid supplies were cut after 1975, encouraged individuals and enterprises to divert resources to local uses.
The authors show how development of non-plan trading relations was based on supplies of scarce, aid-subsidized goods which provided the means for local authorities, enterprises and individuals to convert their positions of political and social power into capital. They further highlight the ways in which new, market-oriented trade relations emerged in symbiosis with the planning system and continue to influence the economic structure and institutions today. Economic Transition in Vietnam outlines the many problems currently facing Vietnam, not least how new global forms of integration are affecting future development.
