Book Description

Written by Robert Mundell's academic descendants, as well as other leading economists and scholars, the essays in this volume reflect Mundell's broad influence on modern open-economy macroeconomics. The topics include the vicissitudes of gold in the international system, choice of exchange rate regime, post-World War II European monetary reform, banking crises in emerging markets, speculative attacks on fixed exchange rates, monetary policy rules, interactions between economists and policy makers over macrostabilization and structural microeconomic issues, the connection between international factor mobility and trade, the Mundell-Fleming open-economy macro model, the quantitative implications of general-equilibrium sticky price models, the international roles of the euro and yen, and the employment effects of import tariffs.

4 out of 5 stars The best I've read so far.......2003-06-24

I was taken down a peg in excitement when I discovered that yet another book doesn't seem to grasp truly helpful information for blue collar work seekers but none the less takeing some time everyone can find helpful information in the pages of this book. It's incredibly informative and after reading it I was amazed at how easy it was to impress interviewers. I felt much more prepared for the task or job hunting after reading this book. Makes a great graduation gift too.

      5 out of 5 stars A must-have for any serious job seeker!.......2000-07-29

There is nothing like going into a job interview, one of the most stressful events life has to offer, and feeling as though you are prepared for anything the interviewer throws at you.

This book is one of the most valuable resources I have ever come across. It is a wellspring of advice for virtually any interviewing situation you can imagine. The writing is simple and to-the-point, yet very engaging and thought-provoking. It can be read either from cover to cover or picked up and thumbed through at random. The advice is practical, concise, and can be applied to job-hunting at any level, from blue-collar to white-collar executive positions.

What did this book do for me?

Before I read the book, I spent an exhausting week interviewing with everyone in my field who would see me. I scheduled thirty interviews in a period of five days, and came away with exactly nothing. And rightly so: I spent most of my time in the interviews fumbling for words and passively hoping that the interviewer would instinctively recognize what a great person I would be for the job. In a nutshell, it was a heartbreaking and deeply disappointing experience, not to mention a monumental waste of a perfectly good vacation.

After reading the book, I began the interviewing process again. The first two interviews I had turned into job offers. Furthermore, one of those offers was for a position for which I was not the best qualified. The two other potential candidates had a great deal more experience than I, but as the hiring manager told me, there was just something about my attitude that made them believe they would rather train me to do the job than hire the applicant with the "perfect" qualifications. So there!

I now have the job I have always dreamed of, and I believe I can credit The Complete Idiot's Guide to the Perfect Interview with a great deal of my success. If you're looking for a job, buy it. Read it. Know it. It is such a small price to pay for the delicious feelings of confidence, competence and complete control that you will no doubt experience. Good luck and happpy hunting!

      2 out of 5 stars I may be a complete idiot, but..........2006-05-10

What a disappointment! This book is really geared towards people with a wealth of experience. Every example seems to cite 12 years of X, successful projects in Y, AND you're friends with the hiring manager. (I'd assume, though, that with all that under your belt, you've probably written a cover letter or two.) If you're a new grad or don't have a background in your field, you're not going to find much help here.
Another issue I had with the book - the resumes can be incredibly corny. I like puns and googled quotes as much as the next person, but I would never include them on a resume. I found a lot of the resumes lacked sophistication in exchange for a more 'personal, informal' tone.
Overall, I didn't get much help from the book and would recommend passing on this one.

3 out of 5 stars Not too great for New Grads.......2004-01-25

This book does offer some good tips but I wish that it had a better section for New Grads. If you've been in the business world for a few years then this book does offer some good advice. However, if you're just out of school, you might want to consider another book.

      5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2000-10-12

      Great book!

You can forget about writing boring cover letter that is becoming predictable by using this book as a guide.

Susan did a great job by using lots of example, regardless of the situation you are in.

I think it is a must for any serious job-seeker.

This is a good source for the visual learner who needs to see other resume formats and structures.

4 out of 5 stars Some intriguing examples, but cover letters are a bit silly.......2005-06-27

I believe you need more than one resume book these days in order to get a feel for the various styles available to you. With that in mind, the "The Complete Idiot's Guide to the Perfect Resume" is an interesting and valuable asset.

I have usually relied on "The Damn Good Resume Guide" in various editions and had pretty good luck. Still, the Idiot's Guide had some styles that I hadn't really seen before. For example, they have resumes for individuals with specialty degrees and experience and for those who have been high achievers in their field.

      Two big caveats, however.

The Idiot's Guide doesn't seem to be organized in a logical way. It feels like it jumps around from topic to topic instead of just concentrating on illustrating various resume styles and approaches. Perhaps that's just the Idiot Guide format and they're just trying to present as much as possible about how to write a resume. In any case, experienced resume writers will likely find this frustrating if they're mostly just looking for fresh ideas.

The second issue I have with this guide is the cover letters section. Here's one example they give for a first paragraph: "Do you believe in fate? I didn't until I opened the Sheridan Bee this morning and saw your ad for Job Placement Officer. It sounded like the job I've been searching for."

Maybe this is just personal style issue, but I've been on the hiring end myself and read a few cover letters. If I saw a letter with that paragraph I'd probably question the job candidate's professionalism. It just comes off as overly eager with a touch of inexperience. Granted, this is just one letter in the book. Still, I found the cover letter section to be one of the weakest chapters and not all that helpful.

The Idiot's Guide would probably help a lot of people in creating a better resume. I recommend it as an addition to one's collection of books on the topic. However, I would not recommend it to anyone as a sole primary source of information.

2 out of 5 stars Results are important.......2005-02-27

Yes this book may be good in showing you how to write a resume and I used it to reformat my resume. But like everything else in this world, results obtained is the ultimate judge. I sent about 50 resumes using the format/s suggested in this book and it did not bring me a single interview. I am fully qualified for the positions I applied for yet could not land an interview! My own style of resume ( 2.5 pages) got me the job I was seeking. Enough said.

4 out of 5 stars Only resume book you'll ever need.......2003-09-19

On the cover of the book it says, "the only resume book you'll ever need". I found that to be very true. I went to an employment resource centre and took a look at more than 15 'expert' resume books, most were garbage, and then i found Susan Ireland's book. I still find the title of her book, "the complete idiot's guide..." insulting. However, don't let the title discourage you. this book does an excellent job for people going through a career change (myself). I have written many resumes and found this book taught me new tricks, boosted my confidence, and best of all showed me how to write a successful resume. Excellent for both expert and novice resume writters. I rated this book 4 stars because of the terrible Cover Letter section.
      For example, p.186 from book:

      "... Dear Mr. Foremost,
Do you believe in fate? I didn't until I opened the Sheridan Bee this morning and saw your ad for Job Placement Officer....."

      or this clever one:

      ".... Dear Mr. Callahan,
Research shows that women have a greater sensitivity to color than men. for that reason, I propose that I create a marketing program for Household Paints that targets women....let's talk in person about your new 'Colors for Women' program. I'II call you in a few days to arrange an appointment..."

Those are some of the weakest examples of cover letters i have ever read. Completely unacceptable in my opionion. My advice, check out the book for the resume section only.

5 out of 5 stars From amature to professional in one book.......2003-06-24

before I bought this book I had a resume that I had 10% confidence in. Now in 24 short hours I have created a document that I have 110% confidence in. This book is a must have for anyone who wants to improve their resume without paying a professional to do it. Great as a graduation gift. Filled in the gaps where the educational system fell short.

This is the first book to provide comparative research data on the software industry in three major parts of the world: the U.S., Japan, Western Europe, and the Russian Federation. It explores the reasons that some countries have had more success in software development than others. The book looks at the role of government in fostering software development, the importance of protecting intellectual property rights to stimulate development, the separation of hardware and software development, and the ways in which industry structures are likely to change or stay the same in the future. The research was conducted by a group of international experts in the software industry.

A really good book if you like going to therapy. Had some good points to keep in mind and ideas to try out, but unless partner is willing to partake in the reflection and discussion part, not very effective.

              Book Description

For many of us, public speaking is at best a chore marked by great anxiety and at worst a potential career stopper. Ours is a time when the ability to communicate in front of individuals or groups in all types of business and other situations is becoming paramount. Speak Without Fear offers a unique, practical process for combating the stage fright that plagues us every day in these situations.

Unlike other books on public speaking, Speak Without Fear goes beyond the external techniques, such as how to breathe properly and keep eye contact, to delve deeply into the reason for your performance anxiety. It gets to the root of what's giving you the sweats so you can identify what's in the way and work through it to communicate naturally and comfortably before audiences of any size.

Ivy Naistadt's easy-to-follow, step-by-step program will help you:

No matter how anxious you are about going before an audience -- any audience, whether it's 1 or 1,000 -- Speak Without Fear will give you the tools to speak powerfully and persuasively.

5 out of 5 stars Speak without fear.......2007-05-08

I found this book to be immediate help, I would recommend it to anyone new or experienced at speaking before a group. Part 1 was the most helpful, many books cover how to speak in public but this is the first one to cover where the fear originates and how to over come it.

4 out of 5 stars Proceed without fear.......2006-07-20

I picked up this book because I am mentoring someone who wants to overcome their fear of public speaking. While I have extensive experience as a public speaker, I did not have any references to help my protege.

After reviewing several books I chose this one because Ivy addresses some areas which I consider important including the physical aspect of public speaking and not merely the preparation of a speech.

I laughed as I read this book because what she recommends I employ in my public speaking. The one topic I did not see was controlling nervous habits such as verbal fillers and physical twitches.

Overall, highly recommended! I am encouraging my 12-year old daughter to read it to strengthen her school presentations.

5 out of 5 stars Thanks for writing this book!.......2005-11-03

This is the 3rd one I've read on speaking and it really turned my head around. It has such a fresh style! Its also the only one where I felt the author was speaking to me. Speaking in public always been tough for me and I actually feel charged up for my next presentation. Tons of tools, tips, stories, etc. Loved it.

5 out of 5 stars Easy Read - High Impact.......2004-05-10

Great book. The thing I really like about this book is that it helps the reader identify all the reasons for why we all get nervous and gives us a blueprint for getting past them and/or working through them. The nervousness profiles are terrific - I had a presentation a few weeks ago and normally I just "wing it" but this time I realized I didn't know the material as deeply as usual and it was pretty technical. I had a bad experience presenting a few years ago under similar circumstances so I started getting nervous and dreading it. I used the profiles to narrow down my type, followed the recommendations and it worked! The methods for preparing and organizing are first rate and there's a gold mine of tips of all kinds. The author's real world experiences are often amusing and those of her clients are insightful. The book has a delightful tone that keeps it light and easy even when uncomfortable topics are discussed. As a senior manager, my responsibility is to guide others to improve and I'm recommending it to my team. I think just about anyone who speaks or gives presentations could benefit greatly by reading this.
