Book Description
Fresh insights and practical guidelines peel away the mystery behind the elusive art of persuasion.
There's really nothing mysterious about getting people to change their minds. No special, inborn gifts. No subliminal tricks. Instead, the best persuaders--advertisers, salespeople, politicians, spin doctors--depend on the fact that everyone responds to messages in just two ways: thoughtfully or mindlessly. And they know how to manipulate these two persuasion routes to make even the most doubtful say "yes."
Jam-packed with fascinating case studies and surprising examples, this comprehensive, entertaining how-to guide puts the powerful tool of persuasion at anyone's disposal. It explains: * How the master persuaders--the Churchills, Lincolns, and Roosevelts--create powerful, memorable messages that convince people of their arguments' logic and rightness * How successful persuaders exploit the psychological triggers that cause people to subconsciously move from "no" to "yes."
Customer Reviews:
Entertaining & Valuable.......2007-07-18
I never imagined a self-improvement book could be so entertaining. I literally couldn't pull myself away from this book, reading the entire book in one sitting!
Not having read the other "Influence" book recommended in Amazon's reviews, I can't objectively comment; however, I can say that "Artful Persuasion" is without question the most interesting and enjoyable of all self-improvement books I've read.
Knowledge Deployment 101 - 103.......2006-05-05
Artful Persuasion is a compilation of tips, tricks and wisdom on how to persuade others, change their minds, align, and influence people favourably.
Just shy of 300 pages, Harry Mills introduces and expounds on the topic through chapters divided into 'Thoughtful Persuasion' (credibility, impressions, talking, asking targeted messaging. et cetra) and 'Mindless Influence' (contrast, reciprocation, consistency, authority, scarcity, conformity and liking). The book also features several quizzes, by-lines and diagrams to better illustrate the point. Oddly enough, the book ends with a chapter wherein an expected explanation on examples of influence and leadership goes awry and becomes a silly iconography of sorts.
That little biased narrative aside, Artful Persuasion is an informative book, even if it soon becomes apparent that there are no short cuts per se; just techniques that need to be learnt and practiced.
A bigger question, in the meanwhile, is the legitimacy of such techniques. You decide.
Good, yet lacking detail on some vital topics.......2005-05-25
Like other books on the market, this book offers examples and case studies of successful professionals. Mills emphasizes the critical value of winning the attention of your audience or customer. Would like to have seen a bit more on developing the right verbal skills to permit one's message to be heard in a world where everything demands our attention.
very good book.......2005-03-01
This book is written in an authoritative tone and has some incredible insight into how people in the last century were able to influence the masses.
It brings up stories about Churchhill, Rosevelt, the Clintons ect. Toward the last 50 pages it talks about more practical ways we can benefit in our own lives. The book is a great read and has lots of great insight.
You can get some good tips about how to deal with your day to day life. Of course each of us has to decide which strategy works best for different situations. a book that I found very helpful and very practical is called " How to outnegotiate anyone including a car dealer".
Artful persuasion is a great starter and there are other books out there no doubt that can add to your effectiveness and help you apply the techniques to your day to day life. ENJOY!
Artfully Engaging How-to.......2003-09-13
Artful Persuasion is hard to put down. Highly instructive and most engaging, it distills the key thinking on the art and science of persuasion - including the conscious and unconscious factors people base their decision making on. Everyone can learn something from it.
Even for those who don't often need to sell to or negotiate with others, there's lots to learn about how others try to persuade YOU.
Each chapter concludes with a handy bullet list of key lessons. Mills draws upon a rich and eclectic trove of witty, sometimes salty, real-world examples from business, politics, history, and elsewhere. To his credit, he reminds the reader throughout about the unethical uses of persuasion; there's a handy section on how people and organizations (like the media) mislead through graphics.
This is a book that will be on my desk, within reach - as long as I have clients. (And a husband. And a family. And neighbors. You get the point.)
Since rating scales are relative, and I'm not familiar with all the leading books on the subject, I can't rightly give the book 5 stars. So consider my 4 stars an absolute rating of "terrific."

Decline and Fall of the American Programmer

In 1992, Yourdon wrote The Decline and Fall of the American Programmer, warning of impending loss of leadership by American software engineers. But a great deal has changed in three years, and Yourdon now sees a complete reversal of many of the trends he previously documented, as well as new trends such as the WWW, Java, "Good Enough" Software, and the enormous impact of Microsoft on the world of software and computing, that together signify the Resurrection of American software engineering.

Like a good wine, Improves with age.......2005-11-16
I bought this book march 2000, Read it, thought it was OK , left it on my shelf. 5 Years later I was going to discard it from my collection. opened it up and was surprised at the wealth of information in it and how closely it matches my own experience and philospohy. It is a mine of good information. Not a book to read front to back but to explore, it reads better than most web and magazine articles. If you can get one on the used market its worth 50cents of anyones money. i would say its time for a revised edition.
Not exactly Yourdon's best book.......2000-11-15
While Yourdon's "Death March" wasn't another "Mythical Man-Month" by any measure, "Rise" is yet in another (much lower) class. Does Yourdon want to become a true industry pundit? Ed, your style is too clear for that; and you're writing in harback format, which doesn't blissfully disappear like all these magazines.
There are many valuable insights: the section on best practices, for example. The good thing is that Yourdon doesn't just talk about them: he lists a few. "User Manual as Specification" is so simple, so obviously good... why have we done anything else ever? "Good-enough software" is valuable as well, not because you're not doing that already, but because the key is making it a fully conscious and accepted process.
And then there are some chapters that I'd rather not talk about; the one about Java, for example. The author obviously got carried away. In hindsight, this is easy to say, but still: it lacked realism, even if Microsoft hadn't tried foiling Sun's plans since day 1.
Overall: read Yourdon's other books, they're worthier of your money. And if you haven't the classics like "MMM" (Brooks), go there first.
He shouldn't have changed his mind........2000-06-08
Although I haven't yet finished this book I can't help but feel that he was closer to the mark with his first book. In the last three years many foreign countries have been ramping up the amount of software development they do for American (and European) clients. Local software developers cannot compete on cost, so they must compete either on innovation or quality. They're not making it on quality and innovations can only take you so far.
Outdated and almost completely wrong.......2000-04-15
I had to buy this for my CASE tool class. First of all, Yourdon's reliance on "models" to illustate his concepts is ridiculous. The Maturity model, the SEI model...its all useless.
If people in the IT industry tried to follow these models, they would end up "dead and destroyed."
This book is boring, as well. It is his attempt at redeeming himself after his first book.
I could go on and on...
Must read for programming and consulting managers.......2000-03-16
I have read this book three years ago when I was a programming consultant. It is amazing to see the parallel between Yourdon's thoughts in the book and the current Software Engineering Institute CMM methodology. It is as if the whole new methodology was based on this book!
This book definitely reads better than SEI's documentation. You can finish the book in a couple of days and retain the mahority of the ideas presented.
If you are a programming supervisor, IT manager, or an enthusiastic software engineer, this book is fun, captivating, and very motivational.

Customer Reviews:
Poorly written, disappointing.......2002-06-21
I just bought a gift manufacturing company. I hoped this book would teach me "everything I needed to know." It did give me a few pieces of information (and any information is great at this point, hence the two stars), but basically the message is "you must use mfr's reps and keep them happy." I think the writer is biased in this way - she owns a rep search firm, so I don't feel I can trust her information. She discussed no alternative methods of marketing except (very briefly) the possibility of attending trade shows. She also wasted my time with lots of useless (warmed-over) information about business plans, marketing plans, etc, that is just not even close the the quality of other small-business books. The list of trade shows in the back might be of some use, but you can get that information elsewhere. In addition, her grammer and spelling and style (overuse of the passive voice, capital letters, and exclamation points, too much (supposedly motivational) "cliche-ish" business advice) are poor and annoying. A self-published book that comes across as amateurish. I think my evaluation of this book will become lower as I learn from other sources. If this was my 500-600th pages of study (rather than my first reading) about the giftware industry, I probably would have been more dissapointed, as I suspect that other sources will be much better. For example, try downloading articles from jiverson.com or craftsreport.com.
A most read for giftware reps and manufacturers alike........2001-05-07
Jill Ford's book should be read by anyone entering the wholesale gift trade, whether they are a manufacturer or a manufacturer's representative. Any manufacturer considering whether or not to hire an independent rep should read this book which provides all the guidelines for doing so. The appendix containing the sample forms for drafting a rep contract, wholesale price sheets etc. is worth the price of the book alone. I also recommend visiting her website, giftbusiness.com, which is a wonderful resource for anyone in the trade, and subscribing to her free newsletter.
DEFINITELY Worth Buying!.......2001-01-29
I have read Gift Trade Marketing and have found it to be a VERY useful reference. I am new in the gift industry and didn't know who to ask. The section on gift shows, although 3 years old, is also useful in that it lists contact information, type of product displayed at shows etc. The book is well organized and easy to follow. I highly recommend this book to others.
Not worth buying.......2000-08-24
This information can be found in any biz start-up book or on the internet. This book has 232 pages, 95 of which were wasted on "Gift Show Surveys". They're form pages filled in on different wholesale shows around the country. The information, show dates, est. attendees and fees are outdated as the book is three years old. I got more accurate information from going to wholesale shows, calling for exibitor packets and talking to people in the industry (this also created a networking circle for me). The author also writes in such a serious, superior form, you feel like she wanted just to write, "Don't waste your time getting into this industry, you'll never make it". It seems to me she was detailing what an ideal client should be for reps. She even had one of her business cards tucked in for her rep search site, kind of cheesy.

Thinking about Retirement? Read This First!.......2001-12-09
"Forecasting Retirement Needs and Retirement Wealth" is a collection of research papers using the first (1992) wave of the biennial Health and Retirement Study (HRS) to paint a picture of the financial health of the soon to be retiring pre-baby-boom generation. Each of these papers focussed on a different specific issue affecting those approaching retirement. Like a cookbook, where a few good recipes can be worth the purchase of the entire book, I found several chapters to be incredibly valuable, whereas other chapters have yet to arouse my interest.
One of the three chapters that I gained the most from was Chapter 2, "How Prepared Are Americans for Retirement?," which summarized several studies that attempted to gauge how well current and projected savings of near-retirees will meet their expected expenses and then used a software package to determine how well the subjects in the HRS study will fare.
A second study found in Chapter 3, "Projected Retirement Wealth and Saving Adequacy," broke down HRS subjects' wealth by mean, median, and deciles, as well as the proportion of housing wealth, financial wealth, social security wealth, and pension wealth held by each of these groupings. This chapter then went on to identify prescribed saving and replacement rates for each of these populations.
The last study I found very valuable was Chapter 5, "Explaining Retirement Saving Shortfalls." This section examined the wealth discrepancies between various HRS populations according characteristics such as marital status, race, education, health, and attitudes, and then attempted to explain the likelihood and extent of any shortfalls in their wealth accumulation. Later chapters would explore some of these demographic issues further: Chapter 6 looks at issues affecting "Women on the Verge of Retirement," while Chapter 7 looks at "Prospects for Widow Poverty." Chapter 8 further explores issues facing minorities at retirement. I expect that some of the chapters I have not mentioned will increase in value to me as time passes.
This book is written for a college level audience with various sections occasionally requiring re-reading to grasp the full implications of what is said. While most of the tables and graphs were self-explanatory, because it has been more has a decade since my last statistics class, I would have benefited from a better explanation of data such as that found in Tables 3, 4 and 5, in Chapter 5. Overall however, I have found this book very informative as I prepare for my own retirement. Since purchasing this book a year and a half ago, I have not hesitated to recommend it to others. I look forward to the issuance of studies utilizing subsequent waves of the HRS data.

Customer Reviews:
A Classroom In A Book.......2006-05-29
The way Keith Dawson handles the materials is well-written and concise. He does not waste much time going into more than just a couple real-world applications for the technologies he is explaining, but he does set your mind spinning about how they can be used to suit your needs. The information on VoIP and IP Telephony are a little dated and an updated edition would obviously expand a lot on those technologies (which were just emerging when the book was written but have become very popular in the industry now). Not only does he discuss what technologies are available (like AVR, IP-PBX, Recording, Call Queuing, etc.), he goes into a brief discription of the more traditional PBX system, if only to point out their flaws compared to today's newer technology but not failing to point out their merits as well. A good book for someone who is just beginning to integrate themselves in the field and the tech.
THE CALL CENTER: SELF-SERVICE OR SELF DELUSION?.......2005-07-31
Chances are that you already have this book in your IT library. But, you probably don't have the 5th edition of the book. Author Keith Dawson has done an outstanding job of presenting the complete guide to starting, running and improving your call center.
Dawson begins by showing you his Six-Stage Model of Call Center Development, which is has to do with the way the call center interacts with the rest of the company. Next, the author discusses how you are going to have to find a place or location for your call center. Then, he covers some of the important factors that go into a call center successful design. Dawson next discusses how you have to be very careful in choosing the toll free and long distance services for your call center, because they will be very expensive. Next, the author also covers the automatic call distributor, which routes calls and manages information with respect to those calls. Then, he examines predictive dialing systems, which automate the entire outdialing process, with the computer choosing the person to be called and dialing the number. In addition, Dawson then examines the pros and cons of computer telephone integration. Next, the author looks at interactive voice response, which always captures information in an accurate manner. Then, he researches speech recognition system technology as an autoselector tool for the call center. Dawson continues on by exploring the Web as a tool to automate all of the call center functions without human interaction. Next, the author discusses some of the interesting new tools available, including CRM and the new theories of multichannel access for customer contact. Then, he gives some very serious thought about putting a video in your call center. Dawson then discusses that the best way to route a call to the agent most capable of handling that specific call, is routing based on an agent's skill or combination of skills, like language, training, experience, or any mix of those and other factors. Then, the author explains the importance of customer relationship management (CRM). Next, he shows you why order processing systems give you power over your inventory and pricing. Dawson next reminds you why display boards and readerboards are a stable versatile technology, and an inexpensive way to quickly improve call center performance. The author also explains why headsets are a key ingredient in every call center. Next, he discusses the on-hold messaging queue. Dawson also explains the importance of workforce management software, and how it is the art and science of having the right number of agents at the right times, in their seats, to answer an accurately forecasted volume of incoming calls at the service level you desire. Then, the author continues on by explaining why monitoring is a critical part of the process of teaching anew rep how to deal with customers, how to handle difficult situations, even simply how to follow a script and read a screen full of complex information. Finally, he goes into how to make call center careers meaningful.
With the preceding in mind, the author has done an excellent job of making you, the reader, understand the value of surefire ways to motivate your reps; realize the value on the front line; outsourcing; disaster and contingency planning; and, telecommuting agents. At the end of the day, you'll know whether the call center is self-service or self-delusion.
you don't learn anything.......2002-04-25
Buy it only if you are a beginner.
Illuminating Read!.......2001-08-30
This is a definite Must Read for any Call Center professional! All those questions about what system/technology does what and how are answered in one fact-based publication. If you want to avoid the headache of time-consuming hunts through web-sites and talking with marketing reps to learn which product works best for your company, this book is for you. If you are looking for a bubble-gum view of call center management, don't read this book because you just might learn the truth! By the way, get a Call Center Magazine subscription to continue the information flow started by reading this book.
A good general guide.......2000-11-28
This is a good book to people who want to have an overview at a glance about call centers features and problems. But, according to new economy habits, it is not a technological issue. So, if many points are discussed, such as human resources, real estate, organisation, hardware and products, none of them is focused in a detailed way. It is surely a very good introduction to people starting a new job in call centers environments, but do not expect too much by readin it.
Book Description

It is an invaluable reference for new and experienced entrepreneurs that includes chapters on a wide range of topics, from entrepreneurial team building to business plans to financing. This excellent book provides an incredible amount of practical information that will help you make smarter decisions and avoid costly mistakes. The author, Steven K. Gold, is an accomplished entrepreneur who has co-founded and led five early-stage ventures. As an investor and mentor, he also advises many entrepreneurs and young companies. He earned his B.S.E. in Entrepreneurial Management from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, and his M.D. from Brown University Medical School.
Customer Reviews:
Nice Guide for Beginners.......2007-06-16
The author writes a nice overview of the entrepreneurial process. It's basically for novices but it does a good job for this audience. The only problem I have with this book is that it is too basic and is therefore non-unique because it is so low-level. Regardless, I must say that for the right audience, it does a fine job over giving the big picture.
If you are advanced or aspire to become advanced, I would recommend "The Startup Company Bible for Entrepreneurs" but only for high-tech entrepreneurs. Even this author has recommended it.
A Must-Have for Entrepreneurs.......2007-05-14
Steven gives great illustrations to drive home his insightful advice for entrepreneurs. As he's "been there, done that," we can take his advice to heart in the hopes of becoming a success like him!
Exellent Book.......2007-05-11
Great book for getting ready to open a new business. Would refer to anyone thinking about opening a business.
Brief and to the point.......2007-04-27
This is a delightful little book that contains a wealth of useful and helpful information and ideas on starting a small business and ensuring that it is viable and succesful. The book is well written and easy to follow and interesting to read.
This is a must read for entrepreneurs, particularly budding ones as the information the book provides is very practical and can help you avoid making costly errors. The book covers a wide range of topics including the start-up process, marketing the business on a small budget, cash-flow forecasting, among other things.
The book is an excellent companion for the entrepreneur that is well worth having.
Invaluable advice for the budding entrepreneur.......2007-03-04
This book does a terrific job of presenting some of the most important issues entrepreneurs face when embarking on new ventures, touching on topics such as the business plan, funding, team building, and cash flows. Using simple, yet stunningly accurate models of the entrepreneurial process, Steven Gold distills complex subjects into simple, practical, take-away messages. The classification of entrepreneurial personalities (professionals, pragmatists, and inventors) is something I think we can all relate to. I find the metaphor which compares building a new company to making "stone soup" equally compelling. There are countless books out there for budding entrepreneurs, but this one is no fluff. It gets right down to the nuts and bolts so you can concentrate on your business.

Book Description
Many developing countries are in a state of transition as they strive to move from a subsistence-oriented, tightly integrated, inward-looking economy to a surplus-seeking, market-led, outward-looking economy. This book develops conceptual models to explain entrepreneurship, focuses on the entrepreneur as a person, looks at small scale and rural enterprises and identifies management skills necessary to start and sustain small businesses.

From the supplier: The school district of Agar, ND, has developed a unique educational objective for its community, the training and education of high school students who want to establish their own businesses. The Agar school is called the Prairie Economic Development Academy (PEDA) and it is administered like a business firm. The PEDA was envisioned not just to educate aspiring entrepreneurs in Agar, it was also meant to arrest the perceived decline of economic opportunities in its community.
