Book Description
The facts are irrefutable. Women hold only five per cent of directorships in the UK's 200 largest companies. Only one woman is Chief Executive of a FTSE 100 company. This book gets to grips with exactly what is happening for women in the world of business today - the opportunities they have, the pitfalls they face and the triumphs they achieve in what, in many ways, is still a male-centric society.
Despite the statistics, there is a whole raft of talented women battering down the doors of the UK's boardrooms. Sam Parkhouse skilfully pulls out some of the common threads that bind together this elite group of women. We see how certain industries have glass ceilings that are tougher to break through than others. We also learn exactly how many of the traditional qualities associated with women - multi-tasking, creativity, networking, the rejection of corporate life - hold true across the board, and what new skills are required and new opportunities offered to women working in a connected economy. We are also invited to delve into their private lives, to see exactly how they juggle the requirements of an intensely demanding job and a balanced personal and family life. We discover that there are many fundamental values held by these women that we could all learn from, irrespective of gender.
From this book we learn:
- How these women have made it to the top
- Their contribution to the business world
- How others can follow in their footsteps
Sam Parkhouse brings us face-to-face with the most sassy, brave, switched-on and entrepreneurial women who are driving business forward in the UK today. All the women featured have bags of attitude, grit, determination and a sheer bloody-mindedness to succeed. New and first-hand accounts are provided on such women as Martha Lane-Fox (lastminute.com), Beverly Hodson (WHSmiths), Gail Rebuck (Random House), Marjorie Scardino (Pearson) and Nicola Horlick (Societe Generale). Often the very public faces of their businesses, and there to be shot at by all and sundry, these are the women that are shaping the business landscape today.

Customer Reviews:
Not so unrealistic!.......2005-07-13
This book does have some...imaginative ideas, but most of them are not that bad. I read through the entire book and found some really helpful ideas. To tell the truth, I've seen more and more strange business ideas turn into profit on the internet. This book acctually has quite a few possibilities. If you're truly thinking about working from home, but not sure what to do, this book has some great ideas. But they are not "get-rich-quick-schemes". My suggestion would be to check it out at the library to see if you're interested first. If you like it, THEN buy it. That's what's so great about libraries.
You've Got To Be Kidding!.......2003-09-03
This book is not worth the paper it's printed on. Several of 1101 ideas are repeated under different headings and most are truly idiotic! For example, only a few of the 60 ideas under the "FOOD" heading make mention of any government food safety regulations. The author suggests you can sell peanut butter and jelly sandwiches at your local mall, sell hot gourmet dinners out of your truck to train and freeway commuters to eat before they get home or bottle your own water. Huh?? This book assumes you can acquire many of the highly specialized skills needed to be a blacksmith, butcher, glass blower, embalmer, real estate agent, etc. naturally in no time or cost. Offers no resources, websites, or bibliography to help the bewildered and bemused reader actually attempt any of the ideas.
Good for a laugh.......1998-06-06
It was hard to believe this book was published in the 90's. There was a suggestion that stuffing envelopes was a suitable job for handicapped people. He suggested raising domesticated chipmunks, running a puppy mill, going door-to-door to teach people how to tie knots, repairing guns... It goes on in that vein. I also question how many of these jobs qualify as home-based. This book is definitely worth a perusal since it is amusing but it is not worth buying.
Do Not Buy, Good For Laughs Only.......1998-06-05
The first thought that comes to mind is if they took the silly (selling chipmunks as pets), illegal( importing and selling exotic animals), and impratical for the vast majority (gun smithing and instrument building) ideas from this book they would have to call it "78 Non-Profitable Ideas That You May Start From Home But Must Do Someplace Else". Since this title is obviously too long and not nearly cathcy enough for the 90's, its clear that they decidede to add 1023 ideas to the book and sell it to an unsuspecting public.
On reading this book I was struck by the complete lunacy of some of the suggestions. The author is suggesting starting a business going door-to-door teaching people how to tie knots and also manages to put forward the idea of breeding chipmunks for pets. There are numerous bizarre ideas like this.
The worst part of it is that most of the suggestions could be bested by a simpleton with half an hour of free time and and a sharp pencil.
This book is completely absurd, however I would recommend getting from the library in order to laugh at a great number of its ideas for businesses, numerous of which are obviuosly illegal or unethical.

Book Description
How to win friends and influence people over the telephone.
Customer Reviews:
A practical and useful book!.......1999-10-13
This book is a most practical and useful guide for those responsible for serving customers by telephone. As a trainer in the field of customer service skills, I have added this book to the workshop entitled "Customer-focused Telephone Skills." Attendees have rated it as terrific source of information and encourage others to tap into the many tips and techniques offered in this publication.
If you want your call center to be successful, start here........1999-09-27
I believe this book is a 'must read' for every person who answers a telephone, and essential for call center managers. Having managed a call center and now in the call center consulting field, I am very grateful to Terry for taking her time and talent to write what I consider an invaluable training resource. If you want your call center to be successful, this is where to start.
A wonderful handbook for training your employees.......1998-12-10
Managers remain on the lookout for training materials that will help improve employee performance. Those who have been searching for a telephone training manual can stop here. Using a folksy approach, 1-800-Courtesy addresses the major telephone blunders we're familiar with--and tells how to overcome them. One of the book's most helpful sections explains the DISC system for identifying varied personality styles, and offers advice on how to deal with them over the phone. 1-800-Courtesy is definitely current, giving counsel about home offices, cell phones, voice mail, and other communication trends. This slim volume is a great investment for any organization that wants to put on "a new voice"--which many places sorely need.
A new guru of customer service has arrived!.......1998-10-30
More than just a book about customer service via the telephone. This book helps the reader in practical ways to consider how to improve customer service in all departments. Loaded with excellent examples from the real world. Everyone uses the telephone, but this book hones the details that separates quality service from memorized scripts.
Great resource for telephone etiquette and customer service.......1998-10-21
1-800-Coutesy is valuable reading for anyone who uses the phone for business - and isn't that everyone? This concise book is not just a series of telephone tips. Instead it provide practical advice on answering the phone properly, interacting with the different personalities of callers and presenting a confident, positive business image over the phone. This little book is packed with ideas to make every call an effective customer service tool. I have attended Terry's seminar "Psst...Your Business Image is Showing" and looked forward to the release of her book. The book has the same to-the-point, energetic, humorous personality Terry projects in her seminar. If you can't attend the seminar -- Be sure to read the book!

From the supplier: Successful telephone fundraising for political campaigns requires three key factors: volunteers, an appropriate strategy and efficient management. Efficient telephone fundraising can be achieved by providing each volunteer with two assistants. This process frees the volunteer to do more things at once and this usually results in successful fundraising. Establishing a peer-to-peer phone bank can also be useful in fundraising. Techniques for running a more effective fundraising effort are presented.

Customer Reviews:
I've been looking for this book for years!.......2003-04-29
How marvellous it is when, after bumping into the furniture in a darkened room for so long, somebody switches the light on! This book is a godsend. It doesn't matter how old you are, or what stage in your life you are at: Jack Oliver gives you so many easy entry points into the life-long process of financial planning that you can find your way in next to no time.
As the title suggests, the book is broken up into 7 "ages": Birth & Education, Work, Marriage, Parenthood, Career Development, Retirement and Old Age. The book is peppered with "decision trees", which allow you to start reading at the best "age" for you. Each "age" section has its own decision tree which makes it easy to review the options appropriate for that age, and allows you to back-track to elements from earlier ages if you skipped them at the time (e.g. not having proper life assurance with your mortgage). The decision trees are very clear so that you can decide for yourself what sort of provisions you might want to make. He shows you the benefits of making those provisions, and the typical costs you can expect.
I am a shareholder, a company director, a pension fund trustee, a company secretary, a husband, a father and a house owner. I have been subject to a great deal of financial advice over the last 5 to 10 years, but it does not hang together in a coherent picture. Oliver's book contains everything I have ever worried about, and more besides, and all of it in the most organised and accessible fashion. I would recommend it to anybody.
