Book Description
Trade is one of the most powerful forces linking our lives, and a source of unprecedented wealth. Yet millions of the world’s poorest people are being left behind. Increased prosperity has gone hand in hand with mass poverty. Already obscene inequalities between rich and poor are widening. World trade could be a powerful motor to reduce poverty, and support economic growth, but that potential is being lost. The problem is not that international trade is inherently opposed to the needs and interests of the poor, but that the rules that govern it are rigged in favor of the rich.
If Africa, East Asia, South Asia, and Latin America were each to increase their share of world exports by one per cent, the resulting gains in income could lift 128 million people out of poverty. In Africa alone, this would generate $70bn – approximately five times what the continent receives in aid.
In their rhetoric, governments of rich countries constantly stress their commitment to poverty reduction. Yet in practice rigged rules and double standards lock poor people out of the benefits of trade, closing the door to an escape route from poverty.
Reform of world trade is only one of the requirements for ending the deep social injustices that pervade globalization. Action is also needed to reduce inequalities in health, education and the distribution of income and opportunity, including those inequalities that exist between women and men. However, world trade rules are a key part of the poverty problem; fundamental reforms are needed to make them part of the solution. Oxfam’s campaign, Make Trade Fair, aims to change world trade rules so that trade can make a real difference in the fight against global poverty.
This report gives comprehensive research findings and analysis, presenting a powerful case for changes in trade laws, and a reform agenda to make these changes happen.

Book Description
Is globalization creating a more unequal world? Is it creating new forms of inequality? Does it make certain pre-existing forms of inequality more morally or politically significant than they would otherwise have been? Globalization and Equality examines these and related questions, exploring the way increasing globalization is challenging our conceptions of equality. The contributors explore these themes from both theoretical and empirical perspectives. Some adopt a more abstract approach, exploring foundational questions concerning the meaning of equality, its social and political dimensions, and more specifically its moral implications in a global context. Others engage the general themes of globalization and equality by focusing on specific topics, such as welfare, citizenship, gender, culture, and the environment. Original in the questions it poses, and interdisciplinary in its approach, this collection of essays will appeal to all those with an interest in globalization and equality.

Finally...a book that helps!.......2006-07-23
If there is one thing I have not mastered in my life yet, it is speaking to those around me in a way that will not put them on edge - or make me look like a fool. I've had this book, "PowerPhrases," for several years, it is on my desk, and has been used as a reference many times. In work and in my personal life.
Meryl Runion's definition of a PowerPhrase says it all -- "A short colorful expression that gets results by saying what you mean, meaning what you say, and not being mean when you say it." But how do you do it? This book tells me how, and why. I've personally tried many of her principles, and they have worked! Consistently!
I've used various phrases for apologizing, for firing, for interviews, for encouraging conversation, dealing with "know-it-all" people, diffusing anger, writing important letters, giving positive reinforcement without being phoney, just to mention a few.
Anytime I have a confrontational or uncomfortable situation that needs to be addressed, Meryl Runions' books have helped me with the perfect words to say. Not only do they help me come across in a kind and professional manner, they help me to personally feel like I've said what I truly wanted to say -- without being mean or attacking in what I said. Thank you, Meryl! Keep writing!
Lots of Phrases, Little Depth.......2006-02-17
This book follows a very specific format: After establishing the difference between a "Power Phrase" and a "Killer Phrases," in the first few chapters, it spends each proceeding chapter dealing with a specific situation (salesmanship, managment situations) and a lists of "Don't say this" followed by lists of "Do say this" decorated in the background with pop psychology and old fashioned motivational stories, many of which could have come off an internet e-mail chain.
The principles here aren't bad, and I suppose will be quite helpful to some, though it seemed extremely "academic" to me. Essentially, this is another "rules to live by" book with a gimmick that's promised to turn your life around. And like most of these books, some people find it helpful, while others like myself are mightily underwhelmed. To be honest, the whole process of consciously selecting "the right phrase" out of a book for a given situation seems rather artificial to me.
All and all I'd probably be more generous in this review if I'd read it casually on my own time instead of having it thrust upon me as part of a graduate level college course. For that, I expect more than this.
But for it's easy readability, and practical merits, I give it a three.
Just don't pay college bookstore price for it.
This is what PowerPhrases can do for you!.......2002-12-24
I have always felt awkward in new situations where I have to make small talk with people I've just met. I become nervous, self-conscience and end up just putting my foot in my mouth! Well, those days of awkwardness are over! PowerPhrases gave me the tools and insider tips that make people successful conversationalists. Author Meryl Runion gives examples and hints that you read and then store away in your mind for future use. Once I read the chapter: Small Talk PowerPhrases to Break the Ice", I noticed other chapters that I needed help in: PowerPhrases for Saying "No", PowerPhrases for Negotiations, Communicating with Co-Workers, etc.-before I knew it, I'd read the whole book! I would recommend PowerPhrases to ANYONE that has ever worried about not saying the right thing. It will change your life!
Good resource for brevity and clarity.......2002-08-27
Most of us (especially myself) tend to ramble when we attempt to explain things. This is true when either promoting ourselves, our ideas or our products. Power Phrases teaches you how to avoid rambling and make your words more potent and concise at the same time. While it is geared somewhat towards the sales profession with chapters on negotiation and Powerphrases that sell, it is still a good book for anyone wanting to improve his skills in influence. There are parts that are a little hokey and at times I caught myself saying `yeah right.' but it is still a book you will read more than once.
A "must-read", particularly in this internet era.......2002-04-10
Power Phrases!: The Perfect Words To Say It Right And Get The Results You Want by international speaker, trainer, and power motivator Meryl Runion is a solid, useful communication reference for everyone, from laymen to business executives. Its direct, simple presentation of how to phrase things in English to communicate intent as clearly and effectively as possible makes Power Phrases! a "must-read", particularly in this internet era of high-tech misinformation!

An updated edition of Eating & Drinking in Italy is now available!.......2006-03-20
I am one of the authors of Eating & Drinking in Italy. An updated edition of Eating & Drinking in Italy is now available. Search amazon for the fourth edition of this menu translator and restaurant guide. The new fourth edition includes an updated restaurant section with over 100 great places to eat in Italy!
Great resource if you don't know Italian.......2005-10-08
I recently visited Northern Italy. This was a very useful and handy book, not only for restaurants, but also grocery shopping, and discussing food items w/ the locals. I was very glad I had it tucked in my purse. I did not use the restaurant guide section, as I was not in the listed cities, except Venice (used Chow Venice as the resource there). I will likely purchase their other guides when I re-visit Spain and France.
Did not Find it Useful.......2005-09-30
I know some Italian and have traveled to Italy before.
This book does not help much, over a normal small dictionary and we found several instances where basic food items on menu were not even in this book.
I could not recommend it.
Eating & Drinking in Italy by Andy Herbach.......2004-07-27
I cannot praise Eating & Drinking in Italy enough. Complete with national dishes and local specialties all arranged in an easy to use and pleasing format, if you want to savor all the delicacies of Italian cuisine, wherever you travel in that country, do not leave home without Eating & Drinking in Italy.
- Douglas E. Morris, author of Italy Guide, Tuscany & Umbria Guide, and Rome Guide
Useful and Easy to Use!.......2001-08-17
I speak no more than 8-10 words of Italian. I used this book on a recent trip to Italy, and was able to understand almost every menu item I saw, and to order with confidence. It's a marvelous book! The alphabetical organization makes it really easy to use when you're sitting in a restaurant faced with three pages of Italian on a menu. (This review refers to the first edition of this book.)

Book Description
As more and more companies allow their employees to work from home, the need for setting up a home office will increase. However, setting up a home office is much more than just hooking-up your PC to a modem. In the past 4 years, the home-office furniture business has jumped up 31% to $2.5 billion, and computer and related hardware sales continue to skyrocket as more and more people plug-in. This book will walk you through the steps of determining what type of home office will suit you best, choosing the type of equipment required (including types of Internet access), determining the set-up of the office to allow for cost and space efficiency, and keeping the office running smoothly.
Customer Reviews:
A Lifesaver.......2001-08-04
A while ago I found myself having to purchase my 7th computer in 14 years. An initial casual interest had turned into a daily necessity for personal business, business-business, communication and fun.
The 6th computer had crashed - fine one moment, gone the next (luckily a conversation with a friend had prompted me to buy a zip drive and do a full backup only two weeks before.)
I realized I needed to know much more about the options before I purchased, that my peripheral hardware and software needs were steadily increasing, and there were so many terms I just didn't really understand.
I found the Home Office Handbook - thank goodness. Rapidly the mysteries became comprehendible. The guides helped me immensely to intelligently determine what I did and did not need - even to predict which future additions would be compatible. Quick tips and a dose of humor kept it from being a chore.
I know I saved both time and money (and much frustration.) Thank you, Barbara Butler.
Home Office Handbook.......2001-04-06
Home Office Handbook is great! It tells you what to do with technology in the home office and not just how to decorate the office. And I needed help. I manage a group of apartment buildings at a univerity town and have an office in one of the buildings and another in my home. This book was a major help in figuring out wht I needed in each office and how to connect the offices. It also helped the technician that was working with me.

Such books make me wonder how is it possible someone to sell a product and DOESN'T care at all how incredibly outdated and useless is its content/quality. Well, then its up to us to think carefully for what we will give our hard earn money. I want a reliable and up-to-date book and that's why will NOT recommend this one because since 1996 it is good for nothing.

Book Description
Making, keeping, and enjoying money isn’t just about investments, salaries, inheritances, or dividends, according to Deborah Price. It’s also about the games people play around money and their character type in relation to it. In Money Magic, Price shows readers how to stop making fear-based money choices and how to transform their relationship with money to obtain the wealth they desire. The book is structured around eight “types”: the Innocent (the ostrich approach); the Victim (blaming circumstances); the Warrior (conquering money); the Martyr (always rescuing someone); the Fool (gambler looking for a windfall); the Creator/Artist (regarding money as evil); the Tyrant (controlling through money); and the Magician (benefiting spiritually and financially from money). The Magician is the book’s ideal, and Price offers exercises to help readers attain it. “Outlines how one can become a ‘Money Magician,’ bringing one’s attitude toward money in better alignment with deeper life goals.” — Publishers Weekly
Customer Reviews:
Get real and get happy around money and wealth.......2007-02-23
Deborah Price identifies eight different `money personality' types which help provide an understanding of why people have so many issues to do with money. As she says: `when it comes to money, most people lead imagined as opposed to real lives' ... and don't the financial institutions that lend the money, and the advertising agencies that create the ads know that? She makes the point that `wealth does not suddenly make personal or psychological problems disappear. To the contrary, it often magnifies them'. [p11]
This book provides a lot of insight into many of the attitudes and beliefs we have absorbed from our upbringing and environment. It is these unconscious thoughts and beliefs (that we have never critiqued) that undermine our financial health and enjoyment of life. It is true that you can't change what you are not aware of - so you may just want to read this book.
This book eased my worries about money.......2006-12-30
In early 2006, I felt like I was under-utilizing my talents, and wondered how I could increase my personal value. I feel as though this book just "appeared" in my life, as sometimes happens when I need a life lesson.
Money Magic helped me to get to the root of my money issues, and helped me to see that money is THE form of exchange in the world. My relationship with money was common to other forms of relationship in the world. I was hiding my potential, and felt unsophisticated and "behind" others. Through the powerful exercises and gentle words, this book helped me to recognize my own value. It's been so powerful for me that I trained with the author, Deborah Price, to become a money coach myself. [...]
If you are feeling stuck about your relationship with money or worth (including self-worth), I recommend this book for helping you to heal and thrive.
The Alchemy of Gold from the inside out.......2005-01-30
California native Deborah Price is living up to the prophecy of her surname. With her book "Money Magic", readers are led to discover their unique money archetype. Money Magic (www.money-therapy.com) describes the games we all play around money. Often fear-based, unconscious, and out-of-control, Price identifies distinct issues that block people from actualizing their dreams of prosperity.
Using archetypes is a powerful method to get to the root cause of money flow or money blocks. Money Coaching treats the cause instead of the symptoms by pin-pointing how we play games with money. Think of a shopping addict, they often know they have a problem but can't stop. Why? It is more than a matter of stopping a behavior. It is about transforming an unconscious self-fulfilling prophecy.
Money Coaching was created to address the fear-based controls that affect our money habits. It uses simple, practical exercises to expose listeners to their common pitfalls with opportunities to alter a money pattern.
Deborah Price is a pioneer in the field of using Jungian style archetypes to make a difference in people's relationships with money, wealth, prosperity, and abundance. Her interactive presentations get audience in touch with their money archetype. Participants leave with a greater intimacy and honesty about their financial choices.
Price is a senior financial consultant who discovered that the best investments in the world couldn't change people's attitudes toward money. She has helped clients discover the underlying beliefs about money that had previously prevented them from reaching their financial goals. Deborah formed "money coaching" groups that further explored the issues. She is also the author of Smart Investing Online Today! (February 2000 from Adams Media).
Deborah Price's insights are brilliant.......2004-08-17
Deborah Price's insights into our relationships and behaviour surrounding money are brilliant. Furthermore her tools for helping one to change negative behaviour patterns and attitudes towards money, if applied, are life changing. I bought Deborah's book whilst researching different investment strategies. Many of her ideas resonated deeply with me and as a result I made contact with her and am now training to be a Money Coach, under Deborah's guidance. The author's knowledge and insights into money, relationships, psychology and spirituality are outstanding. Her ideas are conveyed beautifully and succintly in Money Magic and I encourage anyone seeking a more prosperous and purposeful life to read it.
Didn't apply to me..........2004-07-31
I was disappointed when I got this book to find that it was more aimed to people who have money but still feel insecurity and lack. There are many other money issues that author did not address such as feeling deserving to earn enough and all the emotional issues associated with that. I did not fit into any of the money types mentioned in the book. However, the author's telling of how life events shaped her view of what was important and of real priority in life is worth reading. Similar to the wake up call that the 9/11 disaster invoked in many people.
Instead of Deborah Price's book, I would recommend an older one that may be out of print: When Money is a Drug by Donna Boundy. I also saw Lynne Twist speak recently and would also recommend her book: The Soul of Money.
