Russia's transition to a market economy has been tortuous to say the least. However, this book argues that the arguments and counter-arguments that pitch shock therapy against gradualism are wide of the mark and quite pointless.

Indeed, the reasons for the warped outcomes can actually be traced back through the long sweep of Russian history. Decisions made in the distant past can fully influence policy making in the present. Hedlund's thesis can this be seen as influenced by the "path dependency" theories of Paul David among others.

When young I observed Spence on television. Just observing the boldness of his attire alone made me curious about his book. I listened to it in audio version. Want to be a lawyer? His book affirmed that you can remain true and that preparation and sincerity are key. So many things about the book contributed to my thinking in starting out that they remain with me still in practice and in life. Also his uniqueness and strength of conviction are inspirations.

Another pamphlet book that can be summed up in one sentence--Don't expect to win an argument unless you believe you're right. This in itself is key advice, since many people enter into a debate or confrontation already thinking they'll lose.

However, no actual instructions, just a lot about the author.

Some good advice, but not an instruction book........2007-01-21

From the title you might be expecting a book that would teach you how to argue. You won't find it here. You will find some sound advice on how to approach an argument, such as that you will have more success in your argument if you are respectful to the person you are arguing with, and if you try to make the argument from a position where you can find common ground. You will also find some wisdom on arguing in certain situations, for example arguing with at home or with children.

I think the most valuable part of the book is his emphasis of arguing from an emotional perspective. Many people, especially certain groups like men and conservatives, tend to be dismissive of emotional arguments in favor of logical ones. However, Spence shows that emotional arguments are more likely to win than logical ones. The skill of framing a logical argument in an emotional context could be a valuable one.
An important omission in the book is arguing in public. Spence tries to address that, but I have the feeling that Spence has lost the ability to identify with people who have trouble speaking in public and the scanty advice he gives seems ineffective - amounting to "just get over it and do it."

Another drawback of the book is that it contains a fair amount of polemic. So if you're going to find it annoying that Gerry Spence likes to go on tirades about environmentalism and his dislike of bankers you might want to find a different book. I found it distracting from the real purpose of the book.

I didn't think much of this as and ESL resource. Most of the activities are too difficult even for Advanced ESL students. If teacher has the time to modify the tasks, then this resource will be a valuable resource for English for Business Purposes. Ideally, this book would really suit native speakers of English studying Business. The exercises are realistic and will help native speakers use appropriate business English.

I have to admit, I don't understand the other reviews, but then again I'm not into dumpster diving or making things from dryer lint. I'm looking for advice from someone who's been there and done that! Mary Hunt is that person. Her slogan of "Bringing Dignity to the Art of Living Within Your Means" says it best. I loved this book, and her updated and combined book "Complete Cheapskate" brings us into the new century!

Miserly Moms is Heaps Better!.......2002-06-19

I read this book and like the other people who made reviews, I found that too many chapters were taken up with credit card advice. I also didn't particularly like the format of the book. You had to read chapters upon chapters to find any useful information rather than in point format. Some of the information was useful, but I think Miserly Moms and The Tightwad Gazette's are much better.

Read the "Tightwad Gazette" books instead........2000-07-31

While this book is acceptable, like other reviewers I found it a bit over-emotional and feel Amy Dacyzycn's tightwad books are MUCH better. This reads a bit like a Heloise book, lots of scattered tips, some are good, some are obvious. Half the book is spent talking about credit cards. Yes, credit cards can be evil, but it all depends on the person using them. Overall, I was not very impressed with this book, and I'm glad I got it out of the library.

Tightwad Gazette is ten times better!.......2000-03-14

Although some of Mary Hunt's work is OK for people who have a major problem with credit card debt, most of her suggestions are obvious and not terribly insightful. Tightwad Gazette is far more practical, and much less padded with silly emotionalism.

Mary Hunt's books are good for the beginner. This is a rehash of her other book as the last person wrote, so only purchase one. If you want every possible option there is to save money, read the Tightwad Gazette 1-3.

The global economy has undergone some major changes during the last several years. The objective of this book is to examine one particular aspect of the new global economic order, namely international public policy. The power of national governments in determining international public policy is being replaced by the dual extra-national entities of globalism - manifested by the WTO and regionalism - best exemplified by such groupings as the European Union and NAFTA. The reason for the importance of this topic is that government policy makers, like their private sector counterparts and academic researchers, are in uncharted waters. None is as familiar with the evolving system that is purportedly to manage the global economic arena.

In the interim, and in the absence of a functioning global economic system, the role of academic researchers in the international public arena should include an examination of the changes which have already taken place as well as those which will be forthcoming in the coming years and decades.
