Book Description

The book gives a comprehensive introduction to SAP's Business Application Programming Interfaces (BAPIs). In the first section, it describes all important terms behind this successful new SAP®-Technology. It then describes a recommendable procedure for introducing and implementing a connection between SAP® R/3® and, for example, Lotus Notes. With the help of a generic customer-order process, the potential for this kind of combination is shown simply and comprehensively. The book is supported by an enclosed CD, which contains Lotus Screencams for better visualization of this technology.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Awfull. Spend your Money somewhere else.......2003-09-05

The only worth this book has is that it provides a comprehensive list of BAPI currently available in SAP. Otherwise, it's a complete waste of time and money.

1 out of 5 stars A useless book.......2002-07-31

This is a useless book on SAP. Could not find any usefull material on any subject of SAP.

1 out of 5 stars Unless you want an 80,000 foot view of BAPIs,save your money.......2001-09-06

There is not any substance or detail in this text, it is about as usefull as marketing overheads. Having developed an interface
to BAPIs using Java, I can tell you that this book is of no help.

Bob

1 out of 5 stars Don't buy this book!.......1999-10-21

Don't buy this book, unless you are looking for a bad and superficial (marketing-like) survey over some R/3 interfaces in connection with an even more superficial (out of scope) discussion of groupware and Lotus Notes. You may easily get the same information from the (public) web sites of SAP and Lotus. Concerning R/3-interfacing, where I am not aware of some recommendable book, you might order the "R/3 Interface Adviser CD" directly form SAP (as a customer(?)).

1 out of 5 stars Title doesn't match contents of book.......1999-07-17

It is a very basic explanation of lotus notes and how could you use it with bapi's plus a list of all the bapis available in the system.... a total waiste of money

A front-page byline in The New York Times! A People magazine cover story! A travel assignment in Katmandu! Dream on. "This is a book," says author Lucy V. Parker, "about commercial writing, business writing, nonfiction writing. It is a book about obtaining practical, often unglamorous assignments that can pay the bills." Sure, celebrity profiles and investigative journalism can be thrilling, but so can paying the rent. Besides, someone has to write all those newsletters, brochures, press releases, speeches, instructional manuals, and articles for employee magazines. With Parker's help, you can write a business plan, form a business, market your services, learn what to charge (and how to collect your due), and deal with taxes and contracts. Parker even tells you how to cope with the loneliness inherent in running a solo venture. Hint: online chat rooms are OK, but "people breaks" are better. With profiles of 10 successful professionals from a variety of specialties and a list of 60 key assignments for home-based writers. --Jane Steinberg

4 out of 5 stars Home Based Writing Business.......2006-12-05

My writing has become more focused since reading Ms. Parker's book. It is a detailed work on writing a business plan and planning a business. It guides the reader into his/her specialty and since my writing lacked focused, this book is on point.

                  3 out of 5 stars Good Overview.......2005-11-20

This book is a very good overview of the business of writing from home. Just don't expect to see much indepth information here.

A good book for those just starting out and looking for information on the generalities of home-based work as well as some marketing ideas for the writing business specifically.

If your brand new to this area then I highly recommend this book. If you already have a home-based business or know most of the information needed for starting one up then I suggest other more specific books for your writing business.

                            Book Description

"The United States used to be a country where ordinary people could expect to improve their economic condition as they moved through life. For millions of us, this is no longer the case. Many Americans today have a lower standard of living as adults than they had in their parents' homes as children. . . . This book is about restoring the upward mobility of U.S. workers. Specifically, it addresses the workforce-development strategy of creating not just jobs, but career ladders."—from Moving Up in the New Economy

Career-ladder strategies create opportunities for low-wage workers to learn new skills and advance through a progression of higher-skilled and better-paid jobs. For example, nurses' aides can become licensed practical nurses, administrative assistants can become information technology workers, and bank tellers can become loan officers.

Career-ladder programs could provide opportunities for upward mobility and also stave off impending national shortages of skilled workers. But there are a variety of obstacles that must be faced candidly if career-ladder programs are to succeed. In Moving Up in the New Economy, Joan Fitzgerald explores specific programs in different sectors of the economy—health care, child care, education, manufacturing, and biotechnology—to offer a comprehensive analysis of this innovative approach to job training. Addressing the successes achieved—and the problems faced—by career-ladder programs, this timely book will be of interest to anyone interested in career development, workforce training, and employment issues, especially those that affect low-wage workers.

                            5 out of 5 stars Don't whine--do something!.......2006-03-14

I think Joan Fitzgerald's book is great and particularly timely. The headlines are legitimately full of the disasters in our economy linked to the new pressures of global competition. Rather than complain or oppose (certainly required--but alone--insufficient), Joan patiently and thoroughly describes the details of an approach that must be the foundation for US education policy at the federal, state and local level. It's a work in progress and Joan provides great information on the ideas, the case studies, and the practitioners. In Chicago and in Illinois, there is a new openness by top leaders in business, government, and labor to new approaches. I'm encouraging them to read Joan's book now.

4 out of 5 stars In Touch With Reality.......2002-09-06

Free to Succeed describes accurately the ever changing work force that is effecting career opportunities. It emphasizes individuals pursuing several rotating career opportunties as opposed to doing the corporate dance as layoffs are becomming more apparent in Big Blue(IBM) and other large corporations.

This book gives some good exercises to give the reader a clear idea of his or her free agent strenghts and weakenesses. Some people have strong imaginations but just lack the nerve. Others may be gamblers with the lack of a strong purpose. To sum it up, this book is a good tool for self evaluation.

The glossary is pretty good and some good resources for web surfers. Some pretty good case studies even if some of them are a bit too repetitive. Its certainly worth a read.

A rare combination of practical suggestions with out-of-the-box thinking. I particularly like her categorization of readers as
                            gamblers, philosophers, desperados, and more.
I also like her list of questions to ask yourself: who are the ghosts hovering over your decision? Nearly every client I work with (see my movinglady.com site) has ghosts and it's not always easy to identify them.

This is an excellent resource for making changes in one's life and work. I found the exercises in the book especially helpful in getting me to think out of the box. The book helped to clarify my own personal working style and what type of work situation would most ensure my success. I highly recommend this book for anyone thinking of making a work change.

Barbara Reinhold's latest books is required reading for graduate students in my Management courses. Many of my students are responsible for attracting and retaining employees to corporations and agencies. Free to Succeed provides hiring managers, leaders and organizations with Best Practices from the perspective of current and well as potential employees. It answers the question...what do we need to do to create the best possible environment in a highly competitive marketplace.

5 out of 5 stars I highly recommend this book.......2001-12-21

I run a mentoring services company, working with corporations to set up online mentoring programs. I recommend this book frequently to program participants. The book is designed to help people think about whether they want to leap into free agency but I think it's equally good as a career development guide for anyone who's feeling stuck or thinking about a change. There are some great exercises to help you assess your current life / career situation and figure out a next step - with free agency being one of many possibilities. I wish I had read this when I was thinking about leaving corporate life and starting a business. I wouldn't have done anything differently but it would have given me better perspective.

                                Book Description

The latter part of the 20 th century witnessed remarkable transformations in the workplace, including the emergence of new organizational designs, new technologies, new markets, new workers, and the globalization of production. Changing Contours of Work examines the effects that these (and other) changes have had on workers’ lives – on and off the job – and the ability to make ends meet. Using a historical lens, this book reconsiders the notion of a “new economy” revealing important changes that have transpired, but also enduring practices that developed in the old economy that continue to shape the opportunity divides that exist today. By framing the development of jobs and opportunity in an international comparative perspective, Sweet and Meiksins show the roads taken, and those not taken, and the impact these choices have had on the structure opportunity in American society. Their analysis reveals various opportunity chasms, and the continued importance of class, gender, race, nationality in the shaping life chances. As workers struggle to make a living, they do so in an economy being built on risk and overwork. The recommendation offered in this book – of value to consumers, activist groups, employers, and governments - offers clear guidance on the strategies of making the new economy work for all.

From the grease and glamour of flying to airline board room maneuvering, and from the Alaska bush to the deserts of Palestine-- The Alaska Airlines Story is the story of Alaska Airlines--Alaskana and aviation history at its best. The bush pilot has always been the backbone of Alaska travel and survival, relied on for everything from food and supplies to medical aid and just plain news from home. And from the early days of flying in Alaska, Alaska Airlines' pilots have flown a remarkable path through history...a path that took them through and over mountains, over glaciers and the bush country to halfway around the world to airlift Jews to Palestine.

This is not only a historical account of the Alaskan Airlines but a story about the lives of the people who carved out a dream in an unforgiving wilderness. The organization's culture reflects the personalities, values, and experiences of the people, past and present, which built this company. The author takes you back in history to the early 1930's through the eyes of the first pilots who dared to fly the Alaskan wilderness. Their courage, strong determination, and refusal to accept failure built the founding principles of the organization we know today. Satterfield provides the reader a vivid historic depiction of the evolution of air travel, the Alaskan Airlines, the people, and their place in Alaska's history.
