Book Description

A distinguished roster of contributors considers the state of the art of the field at the turn of the 21st century and charts an ambitious agenda for the future. Following what the editors describe as an `evolutionist' approach to the study of labor markets, the chapters address issues of continuity and discontinuity in a wide range of topics including: markets and institutional structures; employment relations and work structures; patterns of stratification in the United States; and public policies, opportunity structures, and economic outcomes.

When liars are being accused of something, they'll stay calm because they're working on their rebuttal; this is why detectives were suspicious of O.J. Simpson when he didn't express outrage when accused of murdering his ex-wife and Ronald Goldman. Never Be Lied to Again is bursting with tested tips like this for quickly determining when you're being boondoggled. Body language, facial expressions, sentence structure, and word choice can all reveal when someone is lying, says psychologist David J. Lieberman, and he includes 46 of these "clues to deception" to help you, including tricks for framing questions without putting others on the defense. Once you use your newly honed "human lie detector" skills to figure out if you're being lied to, you can then dig for the truth using the specific, influential words and body postures that Lieberman suggests. Written with flair and humor, Never Be Lied to Again is designed to help you get the upper hand in any situation, whether you're trying to figure out if your spouse is cheating on you or if you suspect your coworkers are cooking the books.

    Amazon.com Audiobook Review

It's difficult to have honest communication in a world where people bend the truth to fit their needs. Even more difficult is confronting a suspected liar in an open, forthright manner. In Never Be Lied to Again, human behaviorist Dr. Lieberman coaches listeners to face unfaithful lovers, colleagues, and employees. Lieberman introduces the tape and the remainder is read by male and female voices in varied tones. These different voices pinpoint numerous verbal and physical clues that will help you detect when people are lying; "attack sequences" and "silver bullets" allow you to initiate discussions with the guilty party. Although much of the information is geared to personal rather than professional situations, this tape is still a good resource for starting uncomfortable conversations. 3 out of 5 stars A painful read with some useful information.......2007-09-14

This was a tough book to get through and failed to introduce much information that I didn't already know. The writing style was painful due to the authors choice to alternate the pronouns "he" and "she". He did this to avoid sounding sexist but pointing it out made it even more irritating. Most of the examples used were nap inspiring: "You think a student was cheating on her exam." Or unrealistic: "You suspect someone of selling you a puppy with a bad heart." Lieberman knows what he is talking about and the cover of this book looks great but the inside presentation could use a major overhaul. You don't have to read "Never Be Lied To Again" to know I am telling the truth.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2007-09-05

In the past two weeks it has saved me over $200 at the mecahnics (I used one of the techniques in the book and found out he was lying to me about my brakes AND transmission) amd it has probably saved me a lot of heartache. (It turns out that a guy I had just met was married although he told me otherwise. He confessed to being married after about ten minutes when I used one of the advanced techniques on him) I'm not kidding--this stuff works like magic. This book could not have come at a better time. (Although I don't beleive in coincidences)

All in all,of the books I've read over the years, this is the most significant without adoubt. I can't say enough about it.

4 out of 5 stars Fun and useful.......2007-08-07

I have mixed emotions about this book. On one hand, it does cover a lot of signs that you are being lied to, and if you know about them you will pay attention and will be more likely to figure out the truth. On the other hand, some methods for finding out the truth are really disturbing because the author advocates using lies and manipulations for discovering the truth. However, I would still recommend reading it. You don't have to use every suggestion in it - use what feels right for you. I especially found the first part of the book useful - this is where the author lists all the signs of lying (and there are a LOT of them, I think that he probably covered them all). The second part lists the aforementioned "strategies". All in all, I found the book fun to read and very useful, and it is up to the reader to chose to use the book defensively or offensively.

5 out of 5 stars A trip down memory lane for computer buffs.......2007-04-11

This is the book that that spawned the PBS series "The Machine that Changed the World" airing in America around 1992. It was a five part series that closely matched this book, on which it was based. With this book you will gain an appreciation for the history of the modern computer and get an excellent historical perspective. The 5 part TV series with episodes taken from chapters of this book were titled:

        1) Great Brains
        2) Inventing the Future
        3) The Paperback Computer
        3) The Thinking Machine
        4) The World At Your Fingertips

The book was written before the the invention of the internet and the world wide web, but you can see it coming. Industry giants such as the Alan Kay, Doug Lenat, Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, Alan Touring, Robert Noyce, Charles Babbage, George Boole, Jon Von Neumann and many others are all mentioned and their contributions are put into a modern (for the day) perspective.

I would recommend this book to any student of computer science or computers as a hobby. Though the book is well over 15 years old, it has a timeless quality that takes you back to the beginning of the computer age and leads you gently into the modern era.

Ever since its inception in 1907, United Parcel Service has been synonymous with two things: on-time delivery and sustained profitability. It has set the standard for shipping and delivery firms all over the world, with only nine CEOS in its entire 95-year history. Combining good leadership practice with a corporate culture that any other company would love to emulate, it is a prime example of phenomenal success.

The UPS Story demonstrates how UPS has proven itself to be a master of innovation and service excellence, and examines how the company has continually grown through its corporate culture, leadership prowess, and operational methods.

Through interviews, public record, and keen insight, the book examines in detail the company's decision-making through the years, highlighting its accomplishments and tribulations from its start as a bicycle messenger service to its current status as a shipping solutions partner. The UPS Story distills the fundamental beliefs and pioneering approaches that have sustained the firm through generations of challenges, turmoil, and modernization.

Taking a close look at the core principles that have made the company so successful through the years -- and how other organizations can successfully emulate it -- The UPS Story is a fascinating glimpse at one of the world's most daring and exemplary companies.

                    Book Description

Before the 1990s, China's telecommunications sector was a lackluster monopoly featured by poor-quality service and inadequate capacity. Today the country boasts a dynamic telecommunications industry with the world's largest communications network and user-base with over 460 million telephone subscribers. China's accession to the WTO in 2001 has opened this huge developing telecommunications market to foreign participation and investment.

The authors examine the singularity of the Chinese experience in building up its extensive telecommunications network in merely a decade, by reviewing China's national industrial policies and institutional reforms within the industry. The reader will find in this volume a unique and in-depth analysis of the interplay between political and economic forces amidst the industry's structural overhaul and regulatory reforms. The accounts of industrial features and market conditions are enriched with up-to-date data, which are extremely useful for appreciating the development and prospects for this fast-growing market, set against the backdrop of China's accession to the WTO.

Scholars of China or Asian studies and researchers of information-communications industry and Asian/China studies will find this work of great interest, as will governmental policymakers, both in China and beyond. For foreign business practitioners eyeing this market, this volume provides a helpful guide to understand China's various interests and public welfare considerations that motivate changes in policies towards foreign investment and participation.

                      Book Description

This volume provides research and analysis to understand the role of the former Soviet Union and its involvement in the global economy through the end of the Gorbachev period. It lays essential groundwork for understanding the issues and problems encountered in the contemporary marketization efforts to reform and overhaul the planned economies of Russia and the republics. Various essays provide analyses of Gorbachev's foreign economic reforms and their origins; the relationship of the republics to the world market (highlighting their strengths and weaknesses in terms of their domestic economies and import-export structures); foreign trade reforms under Gorbachev; economic relations of the former Soviet Union with the EEC; and the U.S.S.R.'s changing economic relationship with the Third WOrld (Latin America in particular). A case study of a major joint venture project is provided. Also included is a chronology of foreign economic policy decrees shaping the market reform effort. The essays in this volume address political and economic problems associated with the integration of formerly planned economies into the world market system. This book will be of interest to political scientists specializing in international politics, Russian and Eastern European specialists, and economists interested in the area of the world once known as the Soviet Union.

                        Book Description

This ground-breaking book is the first in-depth empirical study of Chinese organizational design in state and private enterprises. Web-based Chinese management, a new paradigm in business studies, explains the dynamism of private Chinese enterprises and demonstrates the crucial role of micro-level organizational practices for economic development. It can be used anywhere in the world to help deal with the increasing uncertainty and complexity for the next millennium and can also be used as a framework for economic policy.

QUOTATIONS FROM ACADEMIC REVIEWS OF THE BOOK

                        1. QUOTATIONS FROM "ASIAN BUSINESS & MANAGEMENT"

"We have a work that far surpasses most of the 'Art-of-x-Management' genre in a most important and fundamental aspect: providing empirical testing of theoretical statements with rigorous attention to validity and reliability. As such, it is a standard to which few of this rather impressionistic-based genre have ever aspired." (p. 132).

"The theoretical background and interpretation are exemplary cases of the use of statistical analysis for the generation and testing of hypotheses. The strongest feature of this book is the detailed quantitative analysis and explanation of the author's hypotheses. In effect, Professor Schlevogt's entire thought processes are exposed to analytical gaze ?" (p. 132).

"The book is a remarkable attempt at synthesizing and theorizing one particular 'management culture'." (p. 132)

"Schlevogt's unique contribution in this field is two-fold. First, he has synthesized a great deal of thinking on management culture in general, and the Chinese data in particular. Second, he has put that analysis on a firm quantitative and statistical basis, and helped bring about an approach that generates testable hypotheses from the often rather 'fuzzy' and impressionistic data and analysis more commonly provided in books of this type." (p. 132)

"The scope, of the target audience as well as the material, makes it a mine of information, and, as the author intended, potential basis for a variety of future research efforts. Second, the analytical paradigm, though it has its flaws, is a useful and energetic (if I may use the term) business tool. Third, it illuminates and compresses apart of business that is often ignored or, in the Western view, made marginal." (pp. 133-4).

"Schlevogt's slant, which departs radically from the disinterested bureaucracy model, is thus both thought-provoking ('nepotism' is bad, we learn from Weber; 'family enterprise' is solid managerial practice, we learn from Confucius and Schlevogt) and refreshing." (p. 134)

"If indeed, as Schlevogt claims, the most successful businesses in China are based on his Chinese management model, then it behoves any businessman in China to read this book with great care." (p. 134).

"Knowing how Chinese enterprises work, and how cooperation and competition with them is to be managed, is a useful tool in any businessman's kit, and the book offers many useful guidelines in that direction". (p. 134)

                        2. QUOTATIONS FROM "ASIA PACIFIC BUSINESS REVIEW"

"Professor Schlevogt has put together a comprehensive guide to Chinese management. The book is one of the most important works written on the subject. Academics, students, and practitioners will find the text intriguing, inspiring, and informative."

"Much of the strength of the book comes from a writing style that integrates academic reasoning with journalistic writing. I have greatly enjoyed reading the many eye-catching textual highlights that appear throughout the text, like 'China is the ultimate test ground for leadership skills and a company?s ability to excel in other nonstructured situations? If you can make it here, you can make it anywhere!'"

"The book offers many useful managerial implications (see ?The Ten Golden Rules?, p. 209-237). The discussions, though brief, about the key success factors in different regions (p. 242-245) are particularly valuable. ?The government is king in the north? (p. 243) and ?Networks are the name of the game in the south? (p. 244) are among Schlevogt?s advice for succeeding in the Chinese market."

1 out of 5 stars too academic, no idea of real business in China.......2003-03-08

The author seems to have no idea of real practical management and intercultural issues of China today. Moreover he uses a very academic, abstract way to explain his quiet strange assumtions how to handle management issues in China.

                        2 out of 5 stars Nothing new.......2002-11-04

This is a repositioning of Dr. Schlevogt's dissertation (published by dissertation.com) and also available on amazon.com. The great bulk of this book, including data and theory dates from 1999.

The book covers some interesting theoretical ground and applies contingency theory or understanding "fit" between success in China and organizational structure.

It would have been nice if some of the implications for success were developed further -- indeed, the advise given, such as "adaptability", should prove successful for organizations anywhere, not necessarily Chinese! Yet, the author also argues that this idea of adaptability is one that has been exported from China to the West! Also contingency theory is almost a dead avanue of study. The author's use of cross-sectional surveys is even more questionable as the book looks at change.

One thing I found disturbing is that the author took several concepts from "New Asian Emperors", (Haley, Tan and Haley, 1998), include action-driven decision-making and experience-based planning, yet gave no credit to this classic study of Overseas Chinese business practices. Indeed, many of the author's management ideas are presented far better in this book!

This book also appears schizophrenic, swaying wildly between gushing about China's great contribution to Western philosophy, and attempts at a more academic tone with data and statistics. I found self-congratulatory statements such as "These findings allow for groundbreaking, statistical generalizations previously unknown in the field" particularly irritating. It would have been helpful if the author had been more honest, or more thorough, in the presentation of his literature survey.

Pass on this book. I would recommend John Child or George Haley as alternative auhors who cover the same terrain with less gushing, more practical implications and a more balanced approach.
