    Book Description

In The Cooperator's Dilemma, Mark Lichbach provides an up-to-date and complete evaluation of the collective-action approach. A special strength of the work is that it integrates in a unique way both game theoretic and micro- economics approaches to the collective-action problem. Prisoner's Dilemma and public goods issues are thus discussed with a common collective-action framework. Another distinctive feature is the author's development and application of a unique typology of solutions to the collective-action solutions he labels: market, community, contract and hierarchy.
In the comprehensive review of collective-action theories, two criteria are employed to evaluate them. First, the logical completeness of every collective- action solution is considered. Lichbach argues that each type of solution presupposes the existence of at least one other type of solution. Trying to solve the problems of social order and collective- action thus leads one in a vicious circle since no solution seems to guarantee collective- action. While each type of solution might be necessary to either create, maintain or transform collective action, taken independently none is sufficient. To overcome the "incompleteness" problem, the book suggest that we investigate combinations of solutions to the collective-action problem. Second, every solution is evaluated from the point of view of logical consistency with the core assumptions of the collective- action approach. Many recent solutions to the collective-action problem have pushed back the limits of rational- choice explanations. Analysts have tried to synthesize noneconomic variables into economic models. Collective-action arguments have been extended to explain, for example, norms, trust ideology, reputation, institutions and leadership. It has to be questioned whether these recent extensions truly represent "progress."
Mark Irving Lichbach is Professor of Government and Politics, University of Maryland.

      Description:
Choice between different versions of a game may provide a means of sorting. We experimentally investigate whether auctioning off the right to play a prisoner's dilemma game in which the cost of unilateral cooperation is lower than in the status quo version separates (conditional) cooperators from money maximizers. After the auction, significantly more subjects cooperate in the modified PD than in the status quo PD, whereas there is no difference between cooperation rates if the two versions of the game were assigned to participants. However, sorting is incomplete and cooperation deteriorates over time.

As a professional resume writer with experience in senior executive-level resume writing, I bought this book because I was in a creative slump and was looking for some inspiration. This book contains examples of resumes written in very traditional, very standard formats, but nothing inventive. I also would have liked to see more about cover letters.

What I found most unhelpful about this book was the amount of text the author devoted to touting his own writing prowess and the shameless plugs throughout for his resume writing services. On a side note, I find myself suspicious of the glowing 5-star reviews given anonymously by "a reader"...

5 out of 5 stars I would sleep with this book under my pillow if I could..........2005-05-15

An excellent book! Absolutely one of the best exec. resume books out there. This is a must read. I reference it whenever I have a question, and think this is one of the best comprehensive resume books out there. Thanks! Laura, Apex Resumes, www.apexresumes.com

5 out of 5 stars don't leave work without it.......2003-04-11

I've used Asher's Executive Bible for several years now. My brother recently lost his job at IBM and I immediately bought him a copy of his own.

In this market your resume is little more than another unwanted piece of junk mail. You need to be polished and must stand out from an increasingly large crowd to find a good position and further your career.

Asher's Executive Bible gives you practical examples of actually resumes. He points out successful presentation techniques and styles.

There's no need to dumb down your resume and grovel for a job - any job. Asher's Bible has allowed my to manage my career onward and upward. He can do the same for you.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not enough.......2003-01-11

I agree with one of the earlier reviewers; this book is more a compendium of (many) examples than a practical guide to making your resume shine.

As a certified professional, full-time executive resume writing expert, I know that personalized information and details can make all the difference. (NOT to be confused with personal details and information, like hobbies.)

Take care not to copy the resumes in this (or any) too exactly. This makes your resume too "cookie-cutter." It looks just like those created by inexpensive resume writing software (or cheap resume writing services).

... You're attempting to sell a very expensive product of uncertain quality to company management.

This book can help you, but remember that you can't afford NOT to have a professional-looking resume and marketing documents with the correct content.

      Good Luck,

      John Todd

2 out of 5 stars A lot of the same thing.......2001-05-31

I was not exactly thrilled with this book. It seems that the author mearly published all of the resumes he has written for clients rather than show some different forms and styles. Granted, there are many ideas to be gotten out of the book, but I would have liked to see some variety in the styles of the resumes. They all looked much the same. I think "Executive Resumes" by Steven Provenzano has been a much more helpful resume book

      Book Description

This is the tale of the pleasures and challenges that Bill and Joan F. Harrington experienced as they followed their dream of retirement on the island of St. Kitts in the West Indies. Ignoring traditional retirement spots in the United States, they built their picture-book home on the cliffs overlooking the Caribbean.

The warmth, friendliness and humor of the islanders provided a wealth of stories to tell. They also found the history of the island especially intriguing, since they discovered closer ties to their own country than they realized. If you are considering retirement, you can learn from their experiences. Caribbean island life is an interesting option to explore.

Book was boring!!!!!! Can't believe I finished it. Great idea for a book, but author spent too much time telling history or talking (on and on) about people from the island. Was expecting more adventures.

      1 out of 5 stars Don't Bother.......2005-07-25

There are a lot of good books out there on island life, island living, moving to and sailing around Caribbean islands. Unfortunately, this isn't one of them. I was variously angry and astonished at Harrington's attitude and seeming obliviousness to her own ignorance. An upper-middle-class American couple transplants its lifestyle and sensibilities to a Caribbean island? So what? I'm left wondering why they bothered, and why I bothered buying this book.

Anyone interested in the Caribbean will enjoy this book. Beautifully written, it explores the magnificence of St. Kitts and captures the spirit and soul of the island's people. Personal experiences and fascinating anecdotes provide colorful examples of "de life."

Anela and Gabriel Grace have been married 25 years. Anela longed for her first love and Gabriel lived a secret life. It is what happens next that shape the crossroads.

The Rainmaker, Hailee Shaw, has been plagued by the recent rash judgment on the part of her mother Pashen, an ex-cop who was now working the wrong side of the law. No life, no love, no pass, Hailee has made the deal of all deals in an effort to save the only person she truly loves. Can Pashen empathize with the commitment her daughter has made on her behalf?

The Depressed Diva, Onyx Devoe is a singer stuck in the position of a claims representative. Although she's working on her demo, she's a little lifeless. A chance meeting with a client will alter her life, but is the sacrifice more than she's willing to give?

The Working Girl, Paris Parker, is a student, single mom and live in girlfriend. Paris is convinced that she's destined to do better, especially for her son Maceo. He deserves it. Her man has more game than Iverson. The funny thing is Paris isn't tripping on dude. Will her thunder be shortened by a faulty competitor?

The Virtuous Woman, Effie Mae Peters, is a housewife living with her husband Clarence of 40 years just waiting to move into the last phase of their lives together. Clarence finds that he needs a change and Effie Mae doesn't fit his needs all of a sudden. Love doesn't end because the door closes. Conflicted but committed to her vow, will she allow herself to answer?

Four different women set out to grieve the loss of their friend Anela and find that they all shared in the fulfillment of her love, comfort and understanding as their lives wavered.

Somewhat inconsistent with the characters in certain places, but it was a different story that allots you to savor in silver linings.

Anela's a young woman that has had her share of struggles. Due to these trials of her own, she's fortunate enough to offer assistance to four others who are in desperate need with no promise or prospect of hope.

Hailee Shaw, a college student, is besieged as she's trying to handle her studies and tackle her mother's dilemmas. There is a debt that seems to become more and more difficult to pay off.

Onyx Devoe is stuck in a dead end job and all she really wants to do is sing. Wayne Cartwright is everything she's ever wanted in a man, and she quickly falls head over heels for him. It's not long before his selfish ways are revealed.

Paris Parker is a struggling young mother trying to maintain a happy home with her man Russell while dodging advances as she's trying to pay the bills. Russell is lazy, inconsiderate and a womanizer and someday his ways may cause her to lose her job.

Effie Peters, a middle aged married woman, has been married a lifetime to her love Clarence. A single venture to the store has him returning with his resignation to her. Believe it or not Effie is accepting of his middle age crisis.

This was a different type of read for me. Each story is relatable. I don't know about others, but I have wished on many occasions some additional help was available in my life. This is a really good book.

I enjoyed the four stories in this book. I was especially partial to the stories "The Rain Maker" and "The Working Girl". In "The Working Girl", I appreciate that Paris was able to resist her boss's sexual advances, even though she could have gotten payback for Russ's cheating a**.

An enjoyable read; let's see what Shawan has in store for us next. Well done!

Join Hailee, Onyx, Paris, and Effie as these ladies embark on a journey that while filled with pain and sorrow leads to joy and a new beginning. This book is 4 stories in one that leads to a shocking but touching revelation as these 4 women seem destined to meet and share in each other's lives. Hailee while trying to save her mother's life agrees to be the other woman to Lucas Blacke....a powerful and ruthless drug dealer who also just happens to be her mother's boyfriend. Onyx is an aspiring R&B singer who meets and falls in love with Wayne Griffin, an NBA player , despite the drama the relationship brings. After finding out she's pregnant, Onyx is determined to make it work until Wayne drops a bomb on her and she loses the baby. Paris is a single mom who is also an college student. After landing a internship at a prestigious investment firm, things begin to fall apart as her fiance can't keep a job or stop cheating on her, but it isn't until she catches him with her boss's wife that things really begin to spiral out of control as someone at work is trying to sabotage her and she loses her job. Effie has been a good wife to her husband Clarence of 40 years, so she is shocked when he leaves her for a younger woman. A woman who it turns out is only after his settlement money and is determined to get it by any means necessary. It isn't until tragedy strikes that Clarence realizes his mistake but will it be late?

It is a page-turner from beginning to end as it captures your attention and doesn't let go. Shawan Lewis has written a great debut with an excellent storyline. It is a must-read! 5 out of 5 stars A truly necessary and wonderful book!.......2001-06-01

I must say first that the format of "Politics" takes some getting used to. Mr. Heselov goes from giving examples of how the general public is being taken advantage of by credit card companies and the resulting "Credit Card Cancer" to hidden secrets about mortgage companies and loans (his own bailiwick, with over 42 years experience), to anecdotes which go from O.J. Simpson to Michael Milken. Sometimes all in the same page, without any clear boundaries separating them! However, once you acclimate yourself to his unique writing style and get your "sea legs" beneath you, "Politics" is a truly remarkable and illuminating read. Interspersed with the author's own experiences and insights, he paints a picture with seemingly random strokes of the brush about the general climate of Big Business and the political arena. But, like paintings that look like a collection of random shades and layers of paint up close but magically transform into a vivid image when viewed from afar, "Politics" leaves the reader with a clear picture of the forces that lay just beneath the waterline in the political and financial world. Read it once all the way through, then keep it around and read the selections in random order! It is simultaneously amusing and shocking, and guaranteed to entertain and educate. I am on the verge of buying a house myself, and I definitely feel better prepared to face the lending companies after having read this book. Thank you, Mr. Heselov!

5 out of 5 stars A MUST READ FOR ALL CONSUMERS.......2000-07-28

Jack Heselov provides a lot of insightfulness and information in his book regarding credit cards and home loans. The American Consumer can gain a good deal of useful knowledge by reading his book before buying or refinancing their home. Additionally he really nails the credit card companies and shows just how much they are really charging the average consumer who carries a balance on their credit cards. The interesting and humorous manner in which Mr. Heselov has written his book makes it easy and enjoyable to read.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Book with a Timeless Lesson.......2007-09-24

Sure the figures and numbers are old, but the idea is the same and it can still be done! You can retire at 35 if you open your mind! 500,000 was a whole lot more back then than it is now, but even with higher prices I certainly know I will retire when I get that much and retire well, before I am 35!

5 out of 5 stars Follow Your Dreams.......2006-08-21

The reviewer who pans the Terhorst book for being out of date misses the point. Of COURSE the book contains out-of-date financial information--it was written in the 1980s. The point of this book is living your dream, and the Paul Terhorst presents a blueprint of how he and his wife, Vicki, followed theirs. I agree that if you want current investing advice, other texts would better suit, but for an inspiring journal of how one couple changed their lives, this is a wonderful book.

            1 out of 5 stars Worst book I've read.......2006-03-11

I saw a person online recommend this book and I read a lot of financial books and never heard of this book, so I thought I'd give it a try. I only could read half of the book and refused to read anymore. This is the first book in probably 5 years that I couldn't read the whole book, becuase I felt it was a waste of time.
First the author says we should all be renters. Second he only advocates using CD as your investment. Then he talks about places that have a lower cost of living. What was considered lower cost of living in 1988 will not apply to 2006. Also the CD rate of 8% does not currently apply either.
The book really doesn't teach you anything that you probably don't know from reading these other reviews. Save your time and your money. I read my copy from the library, but I want my wasted time back.

5 out of 5 stars Fifteen Years Later, He's Still Retired.......2003-12-24

This book, along with Your Money or Your Life, changed our lives. By following the advice outlined in these two books, we were able to quit our jobs in our forties and pursue other interests. We have been free of the daily grind for over four years now, thanks in part to Paul Terhorst, Vicki Robin and Joe Dominguez (authors of YMOYL).

In a conversational style, Terhorst explains how he realized his job was sapping the life out of him, and how he used his skills as an accountant to devise a plan that would enable him to retire at 39 years of age. Unfortunately, the specific financial advice he gives (invest in high-yield certificates of deposit) is no longer possible. But number-crunching is not the most important message that Terhorst has.

Cashing in on the American Dream advocates a no-nonsense approach to determining just what you want in life. Do you want to be free of working for others? Then it might mean giving up your car and dinners out. But it doesn't have to mean giving up what you really love (or need). Terhorst and his wife, Vicki, have been retired almost twenty years now and have spent much of it traveling the world. They have health insurance abroad, because it's cheaper than U.S. insurance, and better.

The Terhorsts have their own website and I like to check in on them once or twice a year. The fact that they have made their plan work all these years is more important than any advice they have. Cashing in on The American Dream is an inspiring book. If they could do it, why can't you?

5 out of 5 stars A Classic on Early Retirement.......2003-09-03

Tired of life on the corporate treadmill, Paul Terhorst retired from his Accounting career at age 35.

The main premise of this book is that by tapping into equity you may already have (like your house), and keeping your expenses at a reasonable level, you may find that you are closer to retirement than you think.

A key component of Mr. Terhorst's philosophy is appropriately entitled "Don't work for your Assets". When you consider the amount of money that many of us spend on property taxes, car payments, car insurance, expensive toys, swimming pools, etc., who are we really working for? Are we working for ourselves or simply supporting our assets? His solution to this situation is to calculate how much those assets would be worth if they were converted to cash. When he went through the exercise for himself, he realized he had enough money to retire at age 35.

Many years after retiring and writing this book, Mr. Terhorst and his wife are still retired, doing what they want each day, instead of slaving away from 9 to 5 for someone else, which is a testament to the effectiveness of his early retirement philosophy.

            An excellent book. Highly recommended.
