Many argue that developing countries should now strive for greater Competitiveness. At the same time the term has been widely criticized for being a dangerous obsession: a vague code-word for pro-business, anti-worker, anti-environment, and anti-poor policies. This report is part of a series of Competitiveness Reports first published by the World Economic Forum in 1979. In this 2000 edition, co-authors Jeffrey Sachs and Andrew Warner of Harvard University define Competitiveness more precisely as the ability to achieve rapid economic growth over a long time period. Michael Porter of Harvard University defines a competitiveness index that ranks countries on the ability to achieve high current productivity. The first is called the growth competitiveness index and the second is called the current competitiveness index. According to the growth index, countries are deemed Competitive if they score high on economic indicators that have been shown empirically to be related to recent cross-country growth rates. The rankings that come out of this process show that competitive countries do not tend to be high-inequality countries nor anti-environment countries. This book includes these two competitiveness rankings, an executive summary that describes the framework behind these two rankings, and further articles on globalization, economic creativity, the underpinnings of productivity, environment, the euro and education. The book also includes country-profiles that summarize the strengths and weaknesses of each country, and an extensive body of data from the Forum's executive opinion survey.

The Only Reference for Crystal Enterprise.......2002-08-13

I purchased this reference as soon as I could fit it into my budget. There are no references written for Crystal Decisions enterprise level products and I was excited to see one in the works.

I purchased the book for it's attempt to describe the features of the products and how they are designed to work together, from the Crystal Enterprise components to Crystal Analysis Pro. Probably a full 25% of the book is spent on customizing Crystal Enterprise for a web site or web application. The explanations are easy to understand and cover the major points necessary to make the product work.

I am not a big fan of the "Special Edition" book series because I find them to be too general. This one fits the content style of the series to a 'T'. If you need a general reference on the Crystal Enerprise/Crystal Analysis Pro products, by all means, by this book. If you have been "knee-deep" in the product since it's release, you will probably not find any grand revelations here. It succeeds at trying to be what it is: a solid, general product reference.

Also, it is written by Crystal Decisions employees and certified trainers/consultants so you will not be told about any bugs or shortcomings in the product.

I gave it four stars just for the breadth of content and since it is the only reference for Crystal Enterprise, you can honestly say it is the best. To me, it is worth the money spent.

Unlike most studies that offer post-hoc, why-it-happened explanations of Taiwan's remarkable economic growth, Dr. Poon's examines how it happened. Using the Global Commodity Chains perspective and applying it to Taiwan's information technology industry, she illuminates not just the outcomes of development processes but the processes themselves. Her book is the first systematic study so far of inter-firm networks in Taiwan, how they operate, and how they contributed so much to the country's industrial upgrading. With her Global Commodity Chains perspective she is also able to find and lay out in systematic detail the linkages that connect the larger issues of world economic and industrial development, and the meso-level policies and micro-level strategies that shape the process and ends of Taiwan's IT industrial upgrading. The result is a penetrating examination of how various forms of inter-firm networks are created and leveraged by governments and private businesses working together, and the effect this can have on both the local and global dynamics of an economically developing nation. One useful strategy to increase the competitiveness of firms in the global market is to leverage their strengths through inter-firm networks. Little attention has been paid, however, to the link between these networks and industrial upgrading at the national level. As an aspiring entrepreneur, small-business owner, and avid student of business, I found the Entrepreneur's Success Kit to be much more practical and relevant to my business and own development than any other literature on entrepreneurship (or general business/management for that matter) I've come across. It's my belief that the Kit is possibly the best how-to start-up business book ever!

Not only is its in-a-box format compelling and easy to use, Kaleil Tuzman's style- throughout each page- is intelligent, concise, and right to the point. Furthermore, he is able to effectively simplify a wide array of complex topics in a way that's not only understandable, but actionable as well.

Additionally, the visuals are very well designed. Meanwhile, the advisers cards provide a great reference tool covering everything from creativity, to planning, to motivation; as well as start-up related topics including product or service development, business planning, team development, financing and financial management, sales and marketing, and more.

Finally, the CD's included provide an interactive tool to delve into the inner side of entrepreneurship (or the foundation of all entrepreneurial success).

This is a truly remarkable and inspiring product. My only regret is not having this product a few years ago in the early-stages of my entrepreneurial development.

I've now added a sixth book to my all-time favorite business books, namely Built to Last, Pour Your Heart into It, the Tipping Point, the E-Myth Revisited, and The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

simple and clean, rather go through all of the sites to search what you actually need to register your company, this book guide you through that. also, book v.s. web sites, the book gives you more insight to cross comparison on all the legal structures that you need to choose, pros and cons, to make you select what fits you, instead of reading laws on the web only tell you what is LLC and etc. I will keep it although I formed my company after reading this book.

If you are thinking of starting your own business in California, especially if you have never done it before, you will find that this book is worth its weight in gold.

This resource takes the complication out of starting a business, contacting the right agencies and doing things legally. It cuts through a lot of confusion, has an encouraging tone and presents what you need to know in a very logical and easy to understand format.

I often recommend this book to my small business clients and find it to be a useful general reference. It also points to many other good resources and is a good value for such a comprehensive book.

It is well written and easy to understand. Not a lot of legal jargon that you have to wade through, but legal nevertheless. I will continue to use it for a reference.

Great book.......2005-02-06

This book saved me a lot of money by allowing me to form my own one-owner California corporation. I liked the fact that it explained why it wasn't recommending certain things so that you could decide whether it was worth it to you or not.

The only area that I felt it could have explained things more thoroughly was that while it explained how to issue initial shares, it didn't explain at all how to issue any subsequent shares (e.g., in case your corporation was about to run out of money and you (the owner) wanted to buy more shares to inject more capital). It just said to consult a lawyer. So I had to inject more capital via a loan instead. If it's that complicated, then perhaps the author should warn people to slightly overcapitalize the corporation initially.

This book is easy to read and follow. It has a complete list of things you need to do to set up your own business and some good advices. Highly recommended!

I mean it says that right on this Amazon website and it is advertized as a mini book so why would any intelligent (key word: intelligent) think otherwise before buying it?

Insightful.......2003-10-15

What makes Ms. Orman's book standout from the field (she covers most of the topics other writers do) are two very useful insights: (1) that our psychology and subconscous has a lot to do with how we do (or do not) manage money; and (2) money, in and of itself, does not have power over us; indeed, it is the other way around -- the way we manage our money speaks about who we are. Other than these two insights (which are elloquently communicated) Ms. Orman covers the basics -- get out of debt, make sure your family is protected (emergency fund, life insurance, etc.), invest for retirement and college for the kids. She does a very good job in the relatively short book of covering these fields in sufficient depth. I would also recommend her most recent book "The Laws of Money, The Lessons of life...". A note to those who dislike her philosophical/religious diversions -- do not let them stand in the way of receiving some excellent advice.

I have read several reviews here (obviously by the same person) attacking this book and insulting Suze because of i t's size.

EXCUSE ME--but the information states clearly that this is a miniture book. The price might also be a clue.

If you were "taken by surprise", then all I can suggets is learn how to read.

Good supplement to the full length paperback of the same name.

This book can be read in 30 minutes by slow readers !
There were some very good personal stories and some lessons that can be drawn from them. The unabridged version may have more offerings but one would probably want to move on to the next book by this author.

This is not a book, not a real one anyways. This is just a sypnosis of the real thing. It fits in the palm of my hand!!
