        Book Description

As we enter the new millennium, the growing importance of international trade and commerce has created the greatest demand ever for business people who are sophisticated in global management and skilled at working with people from other countries. Cross-cultural researchers, as well as business people themselves, continually observe and try to define the cultural differences in organizations around the world in order to suggest means of bridging the cultural divides that separate business people in one culture from those in another. Today, working in foreign countries and across different cultures requires many more skills than simply having expertise in a single functional area of business, such as finance or software programming; it also requires some knowledge of the foreign culture, its protocols and business style.

        LACK OF PREPARATION BY FIRMS

Some research studies have been conducted on the selection, successes and failures of "expatriates" - business people who relocate to another country for the purposes of business for their firm -- to find out what training would provide for a smoother transition. Surprisingly, a recent study of 51 American companies found that only 12% offered any cross-cultural training, and that the training that was offered was inadequate, resulting in high levels of frustration for the employees and unnecessary costs to the firms.

Too often personnel are placed in a business environment in another culture with the incorrect expectation that interactions will mirror those in the United States. As a result, although most Americans who travel to other countries for business hope to make a favorable impression, often they don't. This may be due to inappropriate behaviors, comments, time orientation, social practices or etiquette differences. Actions that may be considered appropriate for professionals in corporate America may be perceived as arrogant, insensitive, overconfident, or aggressive in another culture, and so may jeopardize business success.

Other business researchers have found that there is a relationship between the rigor of the selection and training procedures of the expatriate and the expatriate's ability to perform successfully in a foreign environment. In addition, the employee's family situation was also found to be an important factor for successful business performance. As a result of this, and the costs involved in relocating workers (and their families) to another country, some firms are using local employees - also known as "host country nationals" -- when possible because of their greater familiarity with local culture and mores, or they are sending more U.S. personnel overseas on short term assignments. Most experts in the field agree that for an American business traveler to function effectively in another country with a minimum of errors, advance preparation - including learning about the culture to be visited -- is a must.

        THE GLOBAL COMMUTER MANAGER

Traditionally, the term "international manager" has been synonymous with "expatriate manager," but this is changing. The Human Resources (HR) Director of international assignments at a high-profile Silicon Valley corporation recently shared with me that companies in the Silicon Valley increasingly search for personnel within the firm who will commute (rather than relocate) to other countries for short-term assignments in their area of functional expertise. Commuters save money for the firm because they do not require the lengthy and expensive cross-cultural training that expatriates need. (Amazingly, it is estimated that expatriate assignments cost some firms as much as five times the employee's salary annually.) Short-term assignments also reduce disruption to the employee's life and family - an important issue given that many Silicon Valley families have two working parents due to the high cost of living there.

The net result is that today more American business people, particularly women, are traveling on international business than ever before, representing many levels of their organizations and many areas of functional expertise, while in the past usually only senior executives traveled to other countries. The U.S. Department of Travel reports that women now account for 50% of U.S. business travel, and a significant part of international business travel. As one senior HR executive commented, "In high tech there is no time for discrimination. If you breathe and you can do the job, you will go overseas on business." Because of this, a new type of cosmopolitan, multilingual, multifaceted executive who functions effectively across national borders is now in demand. Companies are beginning to focus less on who an international manager is in terms of title and gender, but to consider instead which employees can best complete international tasks and assume responsibilities, and they are ! using this as a basis for deciding who to send on foreign assignments.

          Book Description

What business entrepreneurs are to the economy, social entrepreneurs are to social change. They are, writes David Bornstein, the driven, creative individuals who question the status quo, exploit new opportunities, refuse to give up--and remake the world for the better. How to Change the World tells the fascinating stories of these remarkable individuals--many in the United States, others in countries from Brazil to Hungary--providing an In Search of Excellence for the nonprofit sector. In America, one man, J.B. Schramm, has helped thousands of low-income high school students get into college. In South Africa, one woman, Veronica Khosa, developed a home-based care model for AIDS patients that changed government health policy. In Brazil, Fabio Rosa helped bring electricity to hundreds of thousands of remote rural residents. Another American, James Grant, is credited with saving 25 million lives by leading and 'marketing' a global campaign for immunization. Yet another, Bill Drayton, created a pioneering foundation, Ashoka, that has funded and supported these social entrepreneurs and over a thousand like them, leveraging the power of their ideas across the globe. These extraordinary stories highlight a massive transformation that is going largely unreported by the media: Around the world, the fastest-growing segment of society is the nonprofit sector, as millions of ordinary people--social entrepreneurs--are increasingly stepping in to solve the problems where governments and bureaucracies have failed. How to Change the World shows, as its title suggests, that with determination and innovation, even a single person can make a surprising difference. For anyone seeking to make a positive mark on the world, this will be both an inspiring read and an invaluable handbook.

4 out of 5 stars great read on the subject of social entrepreneurs.......2007-02-20

I enjoyed reading this book because it reminded me of chicken soup where every chapter started a new story about someone.

5 out of 5 stars A historical and biographical account of social entrepreneurial heros and heroines.......2006-03-02

I found it inspiring and at the same time intimidating to contemplate the brilliant, hardworking people who inhabit this book. All of them committed their lives, talents, and fortunes to tackle seemingly endemic and chronic social problems, starting small and eventually spreading their good works throughout their nations and even globally. I recommend the book for anyone trying to improve their communities' health and welfare.

3 out of 5 stars Feel better about the world.......2006-02-25

The book has several good stories about good things going on in the world. It's mostly a collection of anectodal items on people in different countries and the challenges they faces. I was surprised on how sometimes such common sense ideas become revolutionary movements. Because the book covers so many countries and problem solvers you don't find out about the people that came before that failed. Its clear that these people are building on others but just now how.

The book is a great study of characteristics that shape a person to become a leader in a national or regional social justice movement. It is quite interestign how people from separate worlds and cultures have such similar traits.

I recommend the book to those that are looking for any broader discussion on leadership and social justice. We used this for our first book in a book club that we started and it was a good lead to other discussions.

          5 out of 5 stars A few good people . . ........2005-09-21

This account of one man's efforts to revise the defintion of "entrepreneur" demonstrates the capacity of what can be achieved from small beginnings. Bill Drayton has created a "consulting" firm that girdles the world. Creator and promoter of Ashoka, a foundation dedicated to social change, Drayton uses a highly selective arrangement to locate and encourage people desiring social change. Their efforts, rarely, if ever, depicted in either mainstream media or even specialty publications, are here explained and endorsed. As is Drayton's unorthodox methods. Yet those methods, and the people adapting them to local conditions, have been demonstrably successful. They need further study and application.

Drayton, through Bornstein's depiction, has redefined the term "entrepreneur" from its narrow economic framework into a broader and more flexible environment. Money "profit" is no longer the basis for evaluation. Instead, how widely can a new idea and its promoter[s] affect betterment of the people shunted aside by pure capitalism? Is the multinational the sole or even the major means for offering employment and economic gain? Must the values implied by major infusions of capital, often with restraints tied to the investment, be limited to what firms successful in developed countries decide? Drayton argues that instead of "top-down" economic structures, change for the better should come about by local initiative. How far this idea has spread is exemplified by the map opening the book. From Brazil to Bangladesh, people with drive, patience and talent have made, and are making substantive changes within their communities, regions and entire nations.

The book provides real examples of people who identified a problem, then set about to improve conditions that had come to be accepted by social inertia. His opening example, that of Fabio Ruiz of Palmares, demonstrates how effective one person can be. Ruiz, living in a depressed area in Brazil, discovered how greatly something most of us take for granted, electrical power, could influence a local economy. Ruiz observed the condition of the rice farmers in the state. A steady supply of water would allow growth of successful crops. Erratic natural supplies, often interdicted by highland farmers, meant turning to groundwater supplies. Groundwater means pumps and petrol-driven pumps were expensive. Ruiz instituted an inexpensive method of distributing electricity throughout the area. The farmers provided the minimal investment and performed much of the labour. As electrification spread, farmers produced steady crop returns, reaching a level that led to marketing co-ops and economic independence. The programme meant dealing with banks, bureaucracy and competiton. Ruiz and his associates doggedly promoted their success, finally seeing it adapted to other regions. It's an object lesson for many rural farmers in the developing world.

Drayton's methods require a draconian approach to assessing ideas, programmes and the people behind them. Once an idea is presented, the obstacles and restraints must be planned for. A good suggestion isn't enough. The people seeking Ashoka's support must demonstrate they can follow through and adapt to changing conditions or outright opposition. From Brazil, through Africa, into the Subcontinent of India and its neighbours, back through Europe and North America, his evalution teams are constantly assessing, inquiring, and selecting those individuals and their plans for improvement. Money, of course, must be stretched to the limit. Government funding is a bane to most NGOs, since too many conditions are generally tied to resource allocation. Drayton's entrepreneurs must demonstrate their proposals are good enough to use with local resources. Only that way can they be launched into a project with Ashoka support. These projects aren't limited to developing countries alone. Bornstein shows how these examples may be applied to any community feeling their social advancement is under restraint. The models are clearly spelled out in detail. The only thing lacking in your community is the individual who can clearly identify the problems and find innovative ways of implementing the solutions. Is that you? [stephen a. haines - Ottawa, Canada]

5 out of 5 stars Not a "how to" but "how they did" change the world........2005-09-19

This book has 15 or so case studies on how people, all Ashoka fellows, made significant social impacts on their part of the world. It also spends a significant numbers of pages describing the Ashoka program itself; It is kind of a "cheerleader" for Ashoka which is less interesting than the case studies. The case studies are very detailed and give uninformed readers like me an understanding of how other people have created successful social programs that benefitted their society. If that is what you are looking for, I highly recommend this book.

          Book Description

David Bornstein's How to Change the World is the first book to study a remarkable and growing group of individuals around the world--what Bornstein calls social entrepreneurs. These men and women are bringing innovative, and successful, grass-roots approaches to a wide variety of social and economic problems, from rural poverty in India to discrimination against gypsies in Central Europe; from industrial pollution in the United States to child prostitution in Thailand. Like business entrepreneurs, social entrepreneurs are creative, driven, and adventurous. The embrace change, exploit new opportunities, and think big. In How to Change the World, Bornstein provides vivid profiles of many such individuals, looking at the personalities, strategies, and techniques they have in common. The book is an In Search of Excellence for social initiatives, intertwining personal stories, anecdotes, and analysis. Readers will see how social entrepreneurs bring about structural changes in their societies--in other words, how one human being can make a difference. The case studies in the book include Jody Williams, who won the Nobel Peace Prize for the international campaign against landmines she ran by e-mail from her Vermont home; Roberto Baggio, a 31-year old Brazilian who has established eighty computer schools in the slums of Brazil; and Diana Propper, who has used investment banking techniques to make American corporations responsive to environmental dangers. The paperback edition will offer a new foreword by the author that shows how the concept of social entrepreneurship has expanded and unfolded over the last few years, including the Gates-Buffetts charitable partnership, the rise of Google, and the increased mainstream coverage of the subject. The book will also update the stories of individual social entrepreneurs that appeared in the cloth edition.

5 out of 5 stars Entrepreneurship at its Best.......2007-09-24

As a serial entrepreneur and teacher of entrepreneurship at the college level, I see social entrepreneurs emerging all around me. While many of the tools and techniques used by social entrepreneurs are the same as those learned and used by their more traditional counterparts, there's a tremendous amount to be learned from role models who are focused on developing enterprises that target social causes. This book does a wonderful job introducing social entrepreneurship through the stories of people who are actually doing it. The individuals profiled in this book, along with their causes, are diverse and can teach us a lot, irrespective of how we label ourselves as entrepreneurs. In general, I found this book to be well written, informative and inspiring, and believe that it has a lot to offer to anyone who wants to make a difference in the world.

This is a book "whose time has come"! (read book to understand why this is ironic) Our world is so desperate for change in so many ways. This book gives both the inspiration and the tools for those of us already working to make change become better leaders and advocates for our cause. This is a must-read for all social change advocates. I highly recommend this book and applaud all that Bill Drayton and the Ashoka Foundation are doing to sustain the many people on our planet who are driven to make it a better place.

Using the same winning formula that propelled her Secrets of Successful Speakers to sales of over 85,000 copies, best-selling author Lilly Walters examines what makes the cream-of-the-crop motivational speakers stand above the rest. She interviews or does detailed profiles 19 superstars--including Maya Angelou, Les Brown, Jack Canfield, Deepak Chopra, Stephen Covey, Sir Winston Leonard Spenser Churchill, Elizabeth Dole, Mark Victor Hansen, Lou Holtz, Vince Lombardi, Sr. and Jr., Earl Nightingale, Norman Vincent Peale, Christopher Reeve, Anita Roddick, Tony Robbins, Brian Tracy, Dottie Walters, and Zig Ziglar. Perhaps more importantly, she interviews hundreds whose lives have been changed when they heard the words of these superstar speakers.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely wonderful book - congratulations on a masterpiece!.......2007-06-20

I've been a professional speaker, trainer and consultant for over 20 years now, and this has got to be one of the best (top-3) books on pro speaking I've ever read. I wish I'd picked it up years ago.

Inspirational and moving, the hundreds of paragraphs of tips from top speakers like Brian Tracy, Mark Victor Hansen, Tony Robbins and of course the Walters are absolutely vital, extremely helpful (even at this stage in my career - this one will really help me!), and a wonderfully valuable book.

I've bought virtually every book on public speaking available, and this one is the one that touched me the most. Think of it like an "inspiration for those who speak", sharing the deep, personal insights from some of the world's top speakers.

This one's a must-get if you are a seminar presenter or speaker. Bravo!

              Thanks,

              Ken Calhoun

2 out of 5 stars Not a book to buy if you want the basics.......2005-08-12

I really wasn't as enthused about this book as the other reviewers. And I'm writing my review because I based my purchase of this book on the many glowing reviews preceding mine.

I bought Secrets of Superstar Speakers thinking I would learn the tips the superstar speakers used so I could use them myself. But Walters only superficially goes into those tips. And many of these tips were obvious and seemed to be "filler". For instance, one section tells you how to stay motivated in the lean years, and tips from "superstars" include: loving what you do, hanging in there, there's no quick fix, and having faith. This advice sounded trite and isn't much help to a reader who's looking for simple speaking tips.

When Walters finally touches on practical and useful superstar tips, she delves into them only superficially and often advises the reader to read her other previously published books to learn more. In fact, Walters plugs her other books quite a bit throughout.

I was also disappointed that the only superstar speakers Walters discusses are motivational speakers. I hadn't realized this was going to be the case, despite the subtitle "Wisdom from the greatest motivators of our time." I thought this book would include great businesspeople, salespeople, lecturers, who are also talented motivators (they motivate you to buy, sell, do, etc.). If you've got more than Tony Robbins-type motivation to talk about, then this book is not for you.

I also felt that Walter's advice was repetetive. She would suggest a tip only to repeat it again on the same page and the next page and the next. Funny enough, the tip to repeat your message was repeated ad nauseum.

The grammar and writing skills were sorely lacking, which was distracting and detracting. To wit, on page 226: "As you put all of these skills on the platform, remembering to appear natural and unrehearsed, takes a great deal of preparation and practice." Sentences like this had me shaking my head.

Only when you get to the last 40 or so pages, you get good meaty tips, which is why I gave this review 2 stars instead of just 1. But the rest of the book is really just superficial filler about motivational speakers.

Finally, I have to say that I also found it offensive that the author managed to squeeze in references to God, religion and Christianity on practically every page. It doesn't seem to occur to her that her readers might be of another religion or might not be religious at all. And since this is not a book about religion, I felt the vast number of religious references were entirely unwarranted.

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Book by Lilly Walters.......2004-03-17

I love this book! Reading how the greatest motivational speakers motivate themselves--gets me motivated!

Zev Saftlas, Author of Motivation That Works: How to Get Motivated and Stay Motivated

PS I am a big fan of Jack Canfield. There is a lot of stuff from him and Mark V Hanson in this book. For example, here is a little excerpt from Jack:

"At my seminar I do a section on `discovering your life's purpose'. We start off by hitting it from the external, then we eventually approach it from the inside. We get them to answer questions like: Who are you envious of?

I was envious of Kenny Rogers, the singer. I had to ask myself, what is it I am envious of? One, he brings pro-athletes down to his ranch in Virginia. He's got a football field, a baseball diamond, a basketball court, tennis court, all built in. He brings in John McEnroe from the tennis world, Larry Byrd from the Pacers, football players. They divide up into teams and have a mini Olympics type event all week. They play all day, then at night they get massages and have gourmet meals. Kenny is also a great portrait photographer, so he takes pictures of everyone. I thought, what is it that I envy about that? I realized it is that I love hanging out with people who are the best at what they do. It helped me realize my passion is for information, for sharing, for generosity, for making a difference.

I start with the envy question, then I ask, 'Think back in your life, when did you feel most alive? When did you feel most happy? When did you feel most loved? What was your greatest success? What was it about that success that made it a success?' As they answer these, people start to see some patterns
              .
Finally, we ask, 'Who do you admire most on the planet alive or dead? If you could be anyone on the planet, who would you be?' If someone says Tony Robbins, that is a real different statement than Mother Teresa. It helps define what they want to express.

With their eyes closed I have them imagine they are climbing a mountain, they go into a temple, and this wise person comes and brings them a gift. As they open the gift, it will symbolically represent their life's purpose. People open it and get things like a children's book, this because they are supposed to write a children's book. Some get little poor kids looking up a them with hope, this because they are supposed to go empower those kids. People get in touch with their passion and their purpose." --Jack Canfield

              5 out of 5 stars Super Book.......2003-05-14

Book has great ideas and ways to become a better public speaker. Very good overall.

              4 out of 5 stars A Good Read!.......2001-04-27

Lilly Walters focuses on the success stories of 19 top speakers and their hints for speaking well. She highlights their backgrounds, turning points and key sayings, and then provides tips on becoming a top speaker using their methods for developing and giving effective presentations. Hearing what these speakers say about the principles of good speechmaking is interesting, but their "insider" tips are pretty obvious, even to an outsider. Most of their advice is widely known within the speaking industry and is presented here repetitively. Don't be put off by the "read this resume" nature of the initial introductions, because they put the speakers in context and show their success. We [...] recommend this book to virgin public speakers or those who want a refreshing booster, to those who book big-name talkers, or to those who like to read recreationally about celebrities and their ideas.

Roy and Jeannette Henderson are two of this nations best public speaking authorities. I have taken their course and have been privileged to have known them for over 20 years during the course of my professional career. Their research is impeccable and their "theories" are easily translated to the podium. I have seen good speakers become remarkable speakers in a matter of days and weeks. Any person in a leadership position (or who are aiming for that top spot) should read their book and take their course. It really works.

              5 out of 5 stars A Must Read.......2007-02-08

The Henderson's book, There's No Such Thing as Public Speaking, is THE BEST book on presentational speaking I have ever read. It's a wonderful blend of solid concepts, practical applications, and invaluable techniques. It takes the speaker from the planning stage through to the execution stage of any presentation. It addresses not only speaking in front of a crowd, but also one on one and small group interactons.
This book is a must read for every corporate executive and military officer if they are truely serious about their career.

5 out of 5 stars This "method" works!.......2007-01-31

Over the years I have given many book reviews, taught in a public high school and have made several curriculum presentations at state teachers' workshops. After reading Roy and Jeanette's book and studying their speaking concepts, I feel that I am a more effective communicator. In addition, I have seen remarkable results in other public speakers after speech coaching using their "one-on-one conversation".

I am happy to see this very talented couple share their life's work in this dynamic, reader-friendly book, THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS PUBLIC SPEAKING.

"There's No Such Thing as Public Speaking" is one of those rare reading gems that actually delivers on what it promises. It may not eliminate the "butterflies" we all get when we have to speak in public, but it does show
us how to get them to fly in formation, and to "make any presentation or speech as persuasive as a One-on-One Conversation." Examples of the authors'
expert advice include: The six truths behind every conversation-and how to use them at the podium. The three steps to inspiring an audience. The seven secrets of using your voice and body language effectively. The seven tools every speaker uses-or misuses. Amateur and professional speakers alike will benefit from buying and reading this excellent contribution by the Hendersons.

                Book Description

Patricia Ball is right on target when she points out how empowering it is to realize that we constantly have choices to make about our actions and response to situations. Once we sense this power, understanding that it is private and inviolable, and that it grows as we grow, we release ourselves from the miscommunication and fear of expressing ourselves that intimidate so many. We learn early in Straight Talk Is More Than Words that the power of choice is ours. We can give it up, but it can never be taken from us without our consent.

Ball goes on to show how this intrinsic power is related to communication and persuasion in many forms, from the most obvious - words - to the often more telling nonverbal behavior. She steps us through all the components we use, some knowingly, some reflexively. She takes us to the heart of the matter - the response from our audience, whether that audience is your life partner, a child, 50 potential clients or 10,000 diverse humans who share at least one reason for being in the same place at the same time as you.

With her twenty years as a professional actor in live theater, Ball sees and clearly explains, the spectrum of techniques at our disposal for "setting the stage" for our message - from when and how to use humor; what difference gender makes and when it makes none at all; why power is related to the response you achieve; when brevity and silence are better than words; how to use the space around you as effectively as eye contact, a handshake, a smile and body language. And don't forget listening, a critical skill good talkers often ignore.

Straight Talk Is More Than Words is a book about communication and personal power. We learn how to better communicate in order to achieve understanding. After all, getting ourselves understood is the first step in getting what we want in the more tangible sense - a promotion, a lower price on a dream house, commitment from a store clerk to correct a mistake, a standing ovation from an audience which listened intently, and on and on throughout life.

2 out of 5 stars Little Substance, Terrible Spelling, Kiyosaki Ripoff.......2006-09-15

                              1) If you've read the Rich Dad Poor Dad series by Robert Kiyosaki, you'll recognize pretty much everything this book offers. Some phrases are just plain copied off.

                              2) The spelling and grammar are so terrible that the book becomes painful and confusing to read. Is there substance? Sure, a little bit, but honestly when you can't differentiate "were" from "where," that says something about this book and author.

                              3) The book is only 51 pages long. Each chapter is about 1.5 pages, but they do tell some information, which is why I give this book a two star, as opposed to a flat one star.

                              4) As the title _might_ suggest, the author blatantly preaches Christianity. All right, fine. Nothing wrong with that, I'm not being anti-Christian here, but the author should have seriously put more warning about this sort of thing.

I really do not recommend this book.

                                Book Description

The Bank of Credit and Commerce International (BCCI), which perpetrated the "biggest bank fraud in history", was founded by Agha Hassan Abedi and initially registered in Luxembourg in 1972. Its other center of operations was the Cayman Islands and eventually it operated in 73 counries. In the summer of 1991, it was shuttered by the Bank of England. Its many crimes included illegally buying American banks using "straw men" and courting powerful American politicos, laundering drug profits, plundering deposits to conceal grotesque losses on treasury trading, and making illicit loans totaling around a billion dollars that were not expected to be serviced. BCCI also ran accounts for both international terrorists and several national Intelligence Services. What follows in this book are essays dealing with certain aspects of BCCI's misbehaviour and various odd structures, as well as a most important document from Luxembourg's Civil Court, detailing charges against BCCI's auditor, Price Waterhouse subsequently PricewaterhouseCoopers.
