Book Description
Whereas previous research concentrated on articulating what global strategies look like in large multinational companies with decades of experience in operations abroad, The Leap to Globalization focuses on how globalizing is realized over time in companies that start from a narrow geographic base. Three characteristics differentiate globalizing as observed in current practice from simple international expansion. First, globalization implies a redefinition of customer value; second, globalizing is an entrepreneurial process that transforms the company; and third, speed plays an essential role in globalization.

Book Description
In Moths to the Flame, Gregory Rawlins takes us on a humorous yet thought-provoking tour of the world wrought by modern technology.
The book's first four chapters explore the worlds of privacy, virtual reality, publishing, and computer networks, while the last four focus on social issues such as warfare, jobs, computer catastrophes, and the future itself. Throughout, eye-opening historical comparisons give a context for the computer age, showing how new technologies have always bred hope and resistance. Provocative yet balanced and sophisticated, Moths to the Flame is an indispensable guidebook to the future.
Customer Reviews:
An unengaging read........2004-11-05
In the preface, the author poses many naturally interesting questions like "Who will become the information aristocracy and who will becomes the infoserfs of the next generation?". The book proper, however, doesn't do much to answer them.
Primarily, the author rambles on vaguely about the possible synergy between humans and computers/robots in the near future. He also highlights the challenges that the complexity of recent and future technologies pose. There do appear some interspersed interesting tidbits, as well. But, in the end, this book is not really thought-provoking. If you are even moderately aware of modern technologies that pervade human societies in developed economies, you will not gather any novel impressions from this book.
What's wrong.......2000-11-16
Hey, I'm only half way through it but I'm loving this book. What's wrong with me? I found his chapter on e-books and publishing to be right on the mark and couldn't help but think of Napster when he talks about "dinosaur killers" in chapter 3, and Stephen Kings recent e-Book offering. I even double checked the publishing date as the book seems so current.
Sure he is not as deep here as Postman or Roszak, but if you want an entertaining book you will buzz through in a couple of hours, get it.
Painfully Trite.......1999-09-15
"For two decades now I've been awaiting a book explaining computers and their social consequences to literate readers," claims the author. Readers with similar hopes will not find satisfaction in this book. Rather, Rawlins casually addresses important issues concerning the role of computers concerning privacy, war, and poverty with no apparent insights or solutions. His descriptions of technologies are insultingly simplistic; one wonders if an average high-school student might have more interesting views on computers. This book's lack of footnotes and bibliography adds support to this reader's suspicion that the author just wrote down whatever came to mind. If Rawlins still wonders about computers and "their social consequences," he might try reading Niel Postman's "Technopoly" or any of the brilliant works of Theodore Roszak.
A poor treatment of a serious topic.......1998-01-21
There are a lot of reasons for thoughtful concern about the proliferation of computer technology in our society. Invasions of privacy, loss of contact with our fellow beings, etc., are all very valid concerns! To his credit, the author (obviously a well-accomplished professional in the computer science area) raises these perhaps unpopular themes. However, having once raised the issues he does not follow through with sound analyses of the problems and recommendations for their amelioration. Frankly, some of what he has to say comes across as barely thought out and silly. At one point he discusses a particular negative ramification of computer technology (I don't have the book in front of me so I cannot be certain which one it is. He describes the problem, indicates that it may have an adverse effect on us, and concludes that the presence of the problem has many implications, and then drops it. I, personally, would have liked to have known what some of those implications are! The whole book looks like it was written too fast and edited poorly. Save your money.

Customer Reviews:
a battle-worn job seeker.......2004-02-10
Only after spending almost 1.5 years of fruitless job searching am I truly able to appreciate the advice in this book. The #1 lesson: use the telephone! Use it for almost everything, from company research to actually finding the job opening. Finding jobs is like those slide puzzles with tiles -- when one tile moves, a spot becomes available. The goal is to find that vacant spot before it gets filled. The only way to do this is to monitor each person who you are most like in every company you are interested in and find out when that person jumps ship. That's when you need to make your move. This book will teach you how to do this.
I haven't found a job yet, but I'm now inspired with wisdom!
A Critical Piece In Any Job Search Portfolio.......2000-02-06
I have to admit to knowing Don personally. But that does not stop me from giving an objective review of an excellent book. I am sorry to hear that the book is out of print. I have hung on to my copy and am referring to it for the third time in my career, reading the section on career transitions, which, although short, is extremely useful. If this book does not become available, look for it used or get it from the library. It is invaluable, as the previous reader stated, if you know what you want to do and want some tools to expand your network. It even offers some ideas if you don't know exactly what you want to do, although he recommends other authors in this case.
If I found a flaw in the book it is that it does not recommend the use of computer tools for networking. I have coupled his information with some of the ideas in "Time Management for Dummies" which advises on use of organizational computer programs, with good results.
Get your job search going NOW - A very good book.......1998-02-05
Highly recommended. This book is extremely practical and action-oriented. Sometimes you need to ponder your goals and take a break to reassess your career; this book is NOT for those times. It's for those times when you need to leave a horrible job before you lose your mind, are about to be unemployed, are already unemployed, or for some other reason need *quick* results from your job search. I was faced with imminent slashing of benefits and reduction of salary by half, with mouths other than my own to feed. Asher's book showed me how to rapidly expand my network of contacts, uncover hidden job openings, and move in for the kill on a job I wanted. I got a new job that pays well and suits my skills perfectly--in one month. Thank you Donald Asher!

The wealth of detail includes information about the donor's operating locations and websites, revenue and profit, typical recipients, recent grants, nonmonetary grants, and much more. A secondary list of officers and directors by name, and an extensive index round out this cutting-edge resource and priceless fundraising tool for public libraries.
Customer Reviews:
Show Me The Money!.......2000-07-21
This is an excellent resource for libraries seeking big bucks for large projects. The indexing and state by state information provides for easy searching for local grant giving organizations. Future publications of this resource may wish to add company information in state by state format instead of alphabetical so one doesn't wind up going back and forth. Though the information is absolutely marvelous the cost is overpriced, especially for libraries seeking funds! Smart librarians should resource share in order to fully reap the benefits without wiping out the budget.
Good resource, but not sure it's worth the cost.......2000-05-19
This guide is chock-a-block full of great info, but it's all to typical of trade books for fundraisers -- if you can afford these overpriced guides, maybe you don't need to be raising money after all. How many libraries have the resources for this?
Customer Reviews:
Talk about useless.......2004-04-02
This book has no proper indexing. There's no geographic index (so you can't find grants targeted to your state) and no subject index (so you can't find grants targeted to your need - ie capital improvements, education, etc). You would need to read every single entry in the book to find all the grants that could be applicable.
