From the supplier: Banking managers should have an adequate media communication strategy in times of crisis to properly inform their customers, shareholders and employees. Prior to any disruptive situation, banks should make sufficient preparations for such an eventuality. They should appoint one individual, preferably someone with skills in public relations, who will handle media relations, and develop and distribute a communication policy for employees. PR kits describing the bank and its community service should also be disseminated to the media, with whom banks should develop a relationship. When a crises does occur, the facts of the situation should be clarified first before the spokesperson communicates with the concerned parties and the media. Also, a post-crisis press conference should be held for discussion on the details of the crisis, how it was managed and that the bank is back in business. Letters should also be sent to customers and shareholders.

              Book Description

Irving Louis Horowitz is one of the leading figures in political sociology today: co-founder and long-time publisher of Society/Transaction, the most significant social science periodical, as well as publisher of Transaction Books, a successful social science book publisher. This book is the
culmination of his many years of theoretical and practical experience with the problems of scholarly publishing.
Among the specific subjects the book deals with are the new technology, notably computers, and their impact on the scholarly community, the relation of fair use and property rights to this technology, and democratic values and constitutional rights in this context. The book also covers the
social context of scholarly publishing, including the changing reading public, the role of social scientists, the global politics of publishing, and the future of publishing.
Horowitz is concerned about moving beyond two prevailing, and opposing tendencies. The first is an excessive pragmatism in the publishing world, with too much attention focused on profit margins and the "botton line." the other tendency is the intellectualization of scholarly publishing, an
approach that denigrates all aspects of publishing other than editorial.
              About the Author:
Irving Louis Horowitz is Hannah Arendt Professor of Sociology and Political Science at Rutgers University. His many books include Three Worlds of Development, Beyond Empire and Revolution, and Ideology and Utopia in the United States.

From the supplier: Non-profit organizations are not spared from crisis situations. Thus, these organizations must be prepared for such an event. Non-profit societies discussed the issue of crisis communication in a recent meeting in NY. A session on 'Media Relations in an Era of Scrutiny' tackled the problem of communication during crisis events. Planning for a crisis, management of information during a crisis and guidlines for crisis managers were recommended.

                  Book Description

What are the circumstances, the authors begin by asking, in which firms encounter a crisis situation? The answers they provide in this little book-at once a concise theoretical formulation and a practical guide to managing the crises that corporate and other enterprises inevitably face-define a field that has often been inadequately understood. Responding to a need long recognized in departments of corporate communication, which must bear the brunt of such crises, Drs. Ogrizek and Guillery have produced an in-depth analysis of the field and a step-by-step approach to preventing full-scale, uncontainable disasters and corporate relations fiascos from which companies may never recover.

Communicating in Crisis is based on a wide range of examples and case studies, including the alarm raised among consumers after an alleged worm infestation of McDonald's hamburgers and the worldwide recall by Perrier's of 160 million bottles from the market when word spread that the mineral water had been contaminated by a toxic compound. In every instance cited, an appropriate communications strategy is suggested that would both gain public trust and keep business going. In addition to product use, the authors also discuss industrial and institutional crises and the sorts of endemic panic to which enterprises are subject, thus making their book indispensable for anyone involved in the management of an organization, whether privately or publicly held, and for courses in corporate communication and corporate risk.

The book is a list of crisis situations and scenarios, most of them backed up with recommendations based on the authors' experience. The recommendations might be useful when taken individually, however, they do not fall together in a general framework. In my opinion, the book lacks a systematic, or processual approach. There is no justification available for the organization of the book and of the chapters: if the book itself is a long list, what is the logic behind it? What were the criteria upon which the construction of the list was based? In other words, why discuss these topics, and not others? It might appear that the chapter titles are meant to offer a typology of crisis situations, at least in the first part of the book. If this is so, this taxonomy should be explained and justified.

The book also lacks theoretical rigor, because the authors fail to provide and stick to a rigorous definition of their domain of study. They do not define nor distinguish between risk communication and crisis communication, thus overlooking to draw the fine but important line between these two types of communication.

My main dissatisfaction stems from the fact that the authors take a cookbook, list-like approach to crisis communication that is not backed up by some fundamental theoretical principles with general applicability in crisis situations. I would have liked to see a framework for evaluating and managing crises, rather than a long list of things to keep in mind.

However, there are still a lot of things to learn from the book: one can be prepared for a number of situations that are likely to come up in certain types of crises and can find some basic advice on how to deal with them; the case studies provide nice illustrations. The book is easy and pleasant reading, informative and entertaining, but I don't consider it a major enlightening contribution to the field of crisis communication.

5 out of 5 stars this is what the publisher says about it. i agree. :).......1999-10-01

2 out of 5 stars Mediocre and naive, at best.......2005-04-17

Such absurd statements such as, "Let us consider that you have $100,000, and that that amount is exactly what you require to fulfill your dream. At the present interest rates, your money, in a very safe term deposit, will earn approximately $9,000 each year." If this were true, no one would be investing in the economy and inflation would be out of control. By "very safe", I think more like a savings account with 1% return. The book is also full of lists with no explanation of the items or terms.

5 out of 5 stars VERY beginning must read.......2000-08-25

This book was great, in my opinion, because i have NO clue.I'm sure for anyone w/ more business operation knowledge it lends less assistance.

I was glad to find a extreme basic book that gets me up to speed and lets me know the basics before i move into the next and intermediate level reading on this topic.

It's cheap - and it presents information that COULD change your mind or confirm your ideas ... good investment :)

2 out of 5 stars Yow to Open your Own Restaurant...A Loser of a Guide.......2000-06-04

This is a very skinny book written by two men who obviously have restaurant experience, but who have very poor writing/communications skills. This book is not a guide to setting up the spreadsheets necessary to open a restaurant. It is doubtful that the authors even know how to open up Lotus or Excel. The amount of essential items left out are humongous. Watch yourself! Not a recommendable expenditure of any money whatsoever on this crummy attempt at producing a useful "book". Rating: eight onions.

5 out of 5 stars Authoritative and complete; A must read!.......1998-12-11

From myths to realities; This authoritative book covers all the planning, organizing, and operating procedures which are necessary and crucial to a successful restaurant venture.

While many people desire to build the restaurant of their dreams, there are important issues that need to be considered if success is to be achieved. Too often sheer determination is not enough. This business relies on too many individuals for one person,(you), to see things right. This book provides the insight and information necessary to provoke serious thinking regarding whether or not to actually pursue the dream of restaurant ownership.

This book contains several anecdotes of real life situations as well as charts, explanations of record keeping, and financial statements. My favorite parts involve the exhaustive lists of what one should seriously analyze, research, and consider before beginning the venture process.

However, heed this caution; This book may in fact dissuade you from ever opening your own restaurant. But if you decide to go ahead with your dream, this book is just what you need to help prepare you for the realities of this time engrossing, yet rewarding business.

Hey, get a copy of this book...USED if necessary! It's jam-packed with motivation and business "smarts" for anyone trying to get your business going. I love the "mental shifts" Paul and Sarah talk about...how to change your thinking from payroll to profit-thinking. And the keys to motivating yourself are priceless.

My copy of Making It On Your Own is all marked up and the pages are dog-earred. So much in here! Do yourself a favor and get a copy, a used one if necessary. You'll be glad you did!

Why should young people even think about saving for retirement? Why not run credit card debt up to the max if the bank is willing to lend it? Answers to these questions and others can be found in this basic guide to the fundamentals of personal finance written specifically for young adults. A wide range of financial matters on how to manage your money are discussed in a progressive fashion from the very basics of opening a bank account to budgeting, paying for college, financing a car, and tax-deferred retirement accounts so that readers with varying levels of knowledge are provided with all the information they need to stay out of debt and to plan for their futures. Touching on a wide range of financial matters, from the use of credit cards to planning for college and retirement, the volume logically walks readers through the process of handling their personal finances. Examples throughout the book as well as advice from financial and family counselors clarify specific points for students to help them learn how to save and budget, how to avoid the pressures of consumerism and escalating debt and how to manage all aspects of their money wisely. Sample lesson plans, an extensive glossary, resource lists and further reading lists provide students who wish to study specific concepts in greater detail with all the tools they need to do so.

                                      Book Description

Millions of people worldwide dream of making a "good" living, of attaining great wealth, and having an extraordinary and fortunate life. However, they haven't yet found a way of attaining it, and they fear that they can only do so at the expense of others—perhaps by compromising their higher spiritual values and virtuous nature. Some people who outwardly acknowledge their desire for great wealth feel inwardly guilty about acquiring it, and their illusive conflict blocks or dissipates their potential fortunes. Other people say they just want to be comfortable and secure rather than vastly fortunate. These individuals also hold themselves back from breaking through to new levels of financial freedom, and actually living their most cherished and inspiring dreams. In addition to their conflicting spiritual and material natures, some people have an additional internal struggle between their desires to give and receive.

4 out of 5 stars Written for people who have vague notions that simply making money is somehow in conflict with their morals and ethics.......2006-05-31

Ok, this book isn't a book about a literal heaven nor does it define spirituality according to any specific religious doctrine. This book is for those folks who have uncomfortable attitudes towards making money because they feel it violates their moral or ethical codes, whatever the name of the code.

A surprising number of people are very uncomfortable with the idea of buying and selling and especially of making money on their work. They don't mind receiving a paycheck as long as it isn't "too big" (whatever that means), but to actually make something and sell it for as much as the market will bear causes them sincere and very painful anxiety. Years ago, when I taught piano full time and had a full slate of students that I charged what was a good rate for the time, one of my friends asked me how I did it.

So, I told her what I did, how I built the number of students, and what I charged. She said she could never charge that much for teaching music because it was unfair to the kids. Well, guess what, she didn't end up teaching many students even at her lower rate. And she had to go work at another job because she couldn't make enough money at what she was willing to charge. Is there a lesson here?

This book takes a person with the kind of fears and anxieties of my friend and walks them through why it is a good thing to charge and make money. What you should do to save and build with that money and how to use money to enrich rather than become the focus of your life.

If you are a person with these kinds of stultifying attitudes towards money, this is a good book to read and think about. However, if you are already a businessperson with a good understanding and attitudes towards making money, well, this book is probably too basic.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome prosperity book!.......2006-03-09

This is one of the very best books I have read regarding prosperity and the way we view money. Dr. Demartini approaches the concept in a way I have never seen before and I have had too many "lightbulb moments" to count. I have purchased 4 of these books and shared them with friends, I was so excited about it. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to stretch their thinking a bit outside the box and gain some new insights about how they think and feel about money.
