Book Description

What determines savings? The question is timely and important. The U.S. saving rate is less than half that of Japan, Germany, and other developed countries, and the imbalance in saving rates across countries is responsible, in large part for the imbalance in international trade. This book examines a number of important determinants of wealth accumulation, including retirement bequests, and precautionary saving motives, demographics, the tax structure, social security, and insurance institutions. Using a blend of theory, empirical research and simulation methods, it reaches some surprising conclusions about what determines savings.

Kotlikoff notes that most of U.S. wealth is due not to life cycle saving for retirement but rather to bequests and other intergenerational transfers. The process of passing wealth from one generation to the next may be explained, in large part, because of imperfect annuity arrangements.

In addition to life span uncertainty, the author points out other types of uncertainty such as uncertainty about future medical expenditures can greatly stimulate saving. Fiscal policies, such as unfunded social security, can dramatically alter a country's wealth, although the process can take many years. Unfortunately, Kotlikoff observes, official fiscal deficits are intrinsically unreliable for measuring the government's stance of fiscal policy. He also concludes that the baby busts currently underway in the United States, Europe, and Japan are likely to improve overall economic welfare despite their detrimental impacts on social security systems

Laurence J. Kotlikoff is Professor of Economics at Boston University and a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research.

2 out of 5 stars Unfortunately Rendered Too Technical.......2001-12-23

From my own explorations into the research on saving, it appears as though Mr. Kotlikoff is considered one of the heavyweights on this subject. This book is a collection of a dozen studies that he has authored or co-authored. Mr. Kotlikoff's preface to the book and the introductions to each of the four parts identify the key findings of the material discussed. This was helpful as this book was extremely difficult reading. The studies are heavily laden with intricate formulas that called for far more effort than I could bring myself to expend so as to comprehend them. To get to text that provided a reasonable return for the time and energy it takes to read it required frequent skimming.

Probably because I am most interested in what I perceive to be within my own locus of control, Part I entitled "Savings Motives" (and to a lesser degree Part IV called "Empirical Studies of Saving") held the most interest for me. Parts II and III included papers on savings that I believe would be of more interest to policymakers and those seeking a macro-economic perspective. Part II is labeled "Fiscal Policy and Savings," while Part III is entitled "Social Security, Demographics, and Savings."

With each study covering a different aspect of how savings are affected by selected variables, the value of this volume to any given reader is not dissimilar to that of a cookbook. Some may find that one or more studies are worth the value of obtaining the book, whereas others may not. Some of the findings are clearly of interest to me, but because of the significant difficulty rendered by the very technical presentation, and I was unwilling to give this book more than two stars.

    Description:
This paper investigates the extent to which income growth and uncertainty and demographic factors affect the domestic real saving rate in Korea. We test an extended life cycle hypothesis and demography hypothesis with Korean time series data from 1975 to 2002. The results of the tests show that the aggregate saving rate is positively affected by the moving average of the growth rate of income and the variance of the income growth. The positive effect of the income growth differs from the negative effect found household survey data were used. The young and the older age dependency ratios have negative effects on the saving rate, suggesting that the age structure of the population has an impact on aggregate saving rates. Also, foreign saving is found to be a substitute of domestic saving. The elasticities with respect to a change in the determinants are low. Given the projected changes in the dependency ratios, the domestic saving rate is expected to decline from 40% in 2002 to about 26% by the year 2030.

      Book Description

If you're aware of the tremendous improvements achieved in productivity and quality as a result of employee involvement, then you'll appreciate the great value of creating a visual factory. This book shows how visual management can make the factory a place where workers and supervisors freely communicate and take improvement action. It details how to develop meeting and communication areas, communicate work standards and instructions, use visual production controls such as kanban, and make goals and progress visible. Includes more than 200 diagrams and photos.

5 out of 5 stars The beginnings of Lean in the west?.......2004-11-10

Michael Greif has written a book on lean principles long before the MIT study resulted in "The Machine the Changed the World".

The foundation of lean is generally agreed to be the 5Ss, kaizen, and visual communication. This book, while focused on VC, does adequately cover the others. Consider this... the book was written in the late 80's, when Lean Manufacturing as a term had not yet been coined.

And now, the review... this is an excellent study on visual communication. Although limited in scope (most practical examples were of western European factories), it is a study that should not be limited to factories; rather, one that has application in many aspects of daily life.

Practical examples, diagrams, drawings, and checklists abound. Definitely user-friendly, and as the subject matter demands, visually communicative.

      5 out of 5 stars A Way to Improve Quality & Productivity.......2002-01-16

I think this easy to read book is a must for all the industry sectors. It illustrates visual management (or visual communication; VC) as a very important issue to boosting the factorys' or companys' productivity through increasing the effectiveness of the employees' from head management to the shop floor workers by the effective sharing of information and by encouraging the workers to participate in developing these information. In addition; VC helps in building a sense of belonging to the factory or company within the workers themselves which will work in the factory (company) best interest.

The book introduces guide lines for applying the VC. I think that the real cases covered along with the many different graphs and pictures really helped in clearing out many points.

5 out of 5 stars I own 33 copies and use it as a text for day-long workshops........1998-03-29

This is a very readable and credible work. Chapter six on visual process indicators is my favorite. It was an a-ha moment for me!!

                                  Book Description

We will all be fired at least once in our lifetime, more if one works for high technology companies! It is ugly. It is uncomfortable and it is a morale destroyer. One day in charge of multimillion dollar budgets and the next day on the street with no one returning your calls.

This book takes you through the inner thoughts of that process from one who has personally experienced this situation several times and come out on top. It is a traumatic time for anyone regardless of level in the firing company. This book of short essays helps distill the feelings one experiences and gives concise directions on how to deal with these feelings and the entire process. Hopefully, these essays help one to come to grips with the reality of his/her situation and prepare one for the next job such that this scenario never has to be experienced again.

McCraley's book is an excellent collection of words of hope, comfort, and encouragement to those of us who have (or may again) pass through the valley of the shadow of unemployment.
                                  An easy read. Very insightful.

5 out of 5 stars Smart and to the point.......2000-12-07

Mike McCraley has assembled a series of smart tips for those (of us) that are in the unfortunate position of searching for a job when we don't have one. Golden, useful, and lots of common sense (that we sometimes forget).

This book is great not only for those of us looking for work, it also speaks to the proper "attitude" of workers everywhere! This book is a great motivator for those looking to improve their professional outlook.

                                  Definitely a needed book.

                                  Book Description

For the past five years Paul Green has compiled and written "The United States Check Study." Originally published as a special report in The Green Sheet, and then in GSQ: The Payment Systems Quarterly, this report has become the definitive work on paper check usage in the U.S.

At present, many of those whose task it is to define the future course of the financial services industry take for granted that checks are on their way out and will be replaced by alternate payment systems sooner or later. In Paul Green's view, those who make immediate business decisions on this unexamined assumption do so at their own peril. If consumers have their way, the decline will occur later, rather than soon. While checks will be "electronified" they are not likely to disappear anytime soon.

5 out of 5 stars Research made easy........2000-01-11

Paul Green's study of checks and their place in today's market proves that the more things change,(e-funds,debit/smart cards,ACH payments), the more things stay the same. Paul's research and gathering of statistics is presented in a style that is both engaging and purposeful. The charts and graphics used are easy to read and supportive of the conclusions drawn by the author. This book is an exception in comparison to most research materials and should be considered a "must read" for anybody in the payment industry field.

I found this book helpful, fun to use, and easy to understand. After reading a few other books on feng shui, I definitely found this one to be more user friendly, without getting too involved or too complicated. And seriously folks, who couldn't use more abundance in their lives?.......

It really helps with every-day challenges like: how to become more creative, the different personna's people embody when they try to manage money, the meaning and uses of water, etc. If you're a financial professional who deals with clients, or somebody who thinks they should be able to save more of the money they make, this is the perfect book for you.

                                  5 out of 5 stars A NEWCOMER'S TRIP THROUGH FENG SHUI.......2002-02-24

Having read a few books on Feng Shui and still lacking clarity on this complex subject I find Suzan Hilton's book to be refreshing, It is easy to follow and the activity sections at the end of each chapter are very helpful in the learning process. Suzan has a way of taking all the parts of the whole and putting them into one compact package. This is helpful in making Feng Shui a total part of your life. I have not found a book yet that demystifies Feng Shui and give practical applications for every day living until I read THE FENG SHUI OF ABUNDANCE. I highly recommend it to those who are just starting to work with Feng Shui and those who are experts and would desire a different way of looking at this fascinating subject. That about sums it up. A fascinating book for a fascinating subject.

3 out of 5 stars First Enron, Now Fascism.......2002-02-19

There are many types of Feng Shui available to practice and study in this country. A particular philosophy may work well for one person and another person may have difficulty. The biggest problem is Feng Shui fascists who declare what is Feng Shui and what is not. If you are interested in learning more about possible ways to increase wealth opportunities in your life, then this book may be helpful to you. If you prefer rigid mathematical problem solving to using your intuition, then perhaps this is not the book for you.
