    Book Description

Since the civil rights movement of the 1960s, research into race relations has tended to focus on political and social inequality rather than the economic impact of racism. A Different Vision: African-American Economic Thought redresses this imbalance. It is a landmark two- volume work--the most significant contribution to the study of blacks and economics ever to have been published.

A Different Vision brings together for the first time the ideas, philosophies, and interpretations of North America's leading African-American economists. Each of the thirty-five chapters presented in these two volumes focuses on various aspects of the social and economic experiences of African-Americans, past and present. This volume dramatically illustrates that African-American economists do have "a different vision," as it offers the hard, incontrovertible evidence--as no other book has before--that when it comes to economics, race matters, and that economic inequality caused by race has had and continues to have an immense impact in every sphere of African-American life. Volume 1 of A Different Vision includes an in-depth discussion of the economics of race and gender; an assessment of the contribution and influence of major African-American economists and economic philosophies, including Booker T. Washington, Abram Harris, and Phyllis Wallis; an examination of racism within the economics profession; and an accessible approach which is free of technical jargon.

Volume 2 offers an analysis of urban poverty; discusses aspects of racial inequality and public policy, including affirmative action, and self-help solutions; examines the theory and method which underlies public policy; and studies the impact of racism on the socio-economic status of African-Americans.

          5 out of 5 stars Excellent & Outstanding & Practical & Unique Lessons.......1999-01-22

Before reading the book and listening to its audio version, I took four 3-semester-unit courses in Communication from colleges. Last month Dec 98, I had the benefit to attend a seminar of AMA on Effective Presentation Skills. Barbara was the instructor. I have learned so many new things never taught in colleges from her; but I could not digest them thoroughly due to intense pace of a typical seminar--too much knowledge to be gained in a too limited 3-day time. Now, reading the book without any rush, listening to the tape while driving, all her experienced, precious, practical, even revolutionay tips in presentation techniques come back to my mind in a so well organized way easy to remember. I can right away apply them in my daily job communication situations. Thanks a lot, Barbara. Your work is changing my life, my communication skills, my presentation techniques; especially when I am a non-native speaker, Vietnamese coming here since 1991, and have to make frequent presentation as part of my job programmer analyst II with Santa Clara County. I owe you so much.

Cafes and coffee houses have a colorful history in this country; in the thirties a cafe society brought a touch of glamor to the grim depression years; in the fifties it was beatnik coffee houses where patrons drank espresso and listened to grungy poets recite their work. Now it's the nineties-and coffee houses are back better than before. This delightful guidebook profiles 100 great cafes from 40 major cities. A scattering of fascinating factoids quotes and scrumptious recipes makes fun to read as well as useful.

              Book Description

Black Power Inc. explores the emergence of a new black elite that sees business and economics as the true base of American power, rather than politics. Instead of mobilizing voters, they are storming boardrooms across the country and establishing themselves in positions of real influence. Now, Fortune magazine writer Cora Daniels, one of the primary chroniclers of this new shift in attitudes, reveals both the professionals who drive it and their motivations for doing so.

5 out of 5 stars Now you KNOW you're not alone.......2007-04-24

Black Power, Inc. is the book for which I've been waiting for quite some time. Daniels covers the real thought process of today's black professional, being a continuation of the previous generation's achievements, yet something altogether different. Today's black professional sees him/herself as a freedom fighter of a different brand, with corporate and entrepreneurial success as the new 'cause'. As I read this book, I found myself shouting 'Yes!' and 'Finally!' at the thought that there were actually others in the professional world who thought like me. The poignant analysis of the post-civil rights generation and its prevailing thought process was everything I needed to give me perspective and understanding of what my real purpose for acheivement has always been. If you are a young, striving, achieving, believing, competent, and driven black professional, this book is for you. This book IS you.

4 out of 5 stars Very Interesting and Very True Outlook on Black Struggle in Corporate America.......2007-01-09

I must say that Cora Daniels is very insightful as she brings a voice to of us who are "Working While Black" I found myself nodding in affirmation to a lot of the things she made mention of. I discuss situations like the one's addressed in this book on a regular basis with friends and old college classmates. It is amazing how our careers span out over different professions not to mention cities and states yet we still can recall similar incidents. This book is a definite read if you are "Working While Black" or if you are not Black and wish to gain some insight into how your Black colleagues may feel.

5 out of 5 stars Well worth it........2006-12-10

Reading the book felt like one of the venting sessions that I need every now and then to keep my sanity. The book was a reflection of the many experiences that I have had and also have witnessed. It was nice to feel that I was not alone and that there is an answer out there and our generation will help find it.

5 out of 5 stars What more can I say..........2004-10-12

What more can I say about this book that hasn't already been said by the other gracious reviewers... except read it. If you want to know what it's like to be a black person age 25 - 40 and work in Corporate America then READ THIS BOOK. If you want to know what your African American co-workers are going through daily then READ THIS BOOK. If you are responsible for a diversity program at a fortune 500 company then please READ THIS BOOK. If you are a Sista and you plan to enter Corporate America then READ THIS BOOK. Finally, if you are "Working While Black" then READ THIS BOOK... I promise it will make you feel better and increase your drive to succeed in spite of the circumstances.

5 out of 5 stars A very truthful, honest, assessment.......2004-08-02

The thing which brings this book the best form of credibility is Mrs. Daniels had access to the very subjects of the book. While I was reading it, I laughed, sighed, shook my head, smiled and many other feelings and words (some of which I cannot repeat) came out of me. For me, this was something I've seen for a while now. I'm happy I am not the only one who has felt these things and seen the things which were discussed in the book. It is not a pipe dream: the author, as well as the people she interviewed, don't give us a 1+1=2 solution to the condition of the corporate world for young Black Americans, because it would not be realistic. I would recommend this to any young Black American (or the old-school cats for that matter) who is looking to take that step to corporate America. It will open eyes for some and re-inforce existing ideas for others.

I love Jean's books and her financial advice is always interesting and practical. However, this is not a new book: it's the paperback re-print of her very useful "You don't have to be rich" (2003). The cover and title here are deceiving, and while the content is excellent (save, pay off credit cards, organize your life), I was not happy when I received it and realized I already had this book with another title.

Financial counselor Gary Moore strips the veneer from evangelical views of the illusions that dominated much of the economic scenes of the last two decades and offers, with "hopeful realism," a guide to true riches based on a biblical worldview.

Moore moves from frank observations on religious pride to a discussion of making money but losing faith. He sees faith as integral to each and every aspect of investing. Using the financial teachings of the Judeo-Christian Scriptures, he shows people how to take sound but fragmented ideas about modern political, economic, and theological reality and mold them into a coherent whole. He cites people he respects, including Henri Nouwen, Chuck Colson, Sir John Templeton, and Robert Schuller.

Differentiating between having a Christian financial planner and having a Christian financial plan, Moore explains that spiritual investing connects the soul of theology, the mind of economics, and the heart of politics, freeing the spirit for "balanced riches" that benefit not only individuals but the world.

He explores the Scriptures, pointing out guidance offered by the patriarchs and prophets, as well as the financial challenges of the gospels. With this Biblical foundation, he then presents a vision for true wealth n the Third Millennium.

Faithful Finances features a forward by Sir John Templeton.

5 out of 5 stars A sound Christian perspective on investing.......2003-12-06

It was a real treat to find Faithful Finances 101 recently.

I was a Baptist pastor for 17 years and am now an Investment Representative with Edward Jones. It is difficult to find responsible, wholistic, and positive investment advice from a Christian perspective.

I appreciate the clear and precise critique of popular economic and investment perspectives prevalent among many Christians today. It was especially helpful that Moore was willing to name those with whom he disagrees. Unfortunately, there is often no other way to encapsulate a differing viewpoint than to name the teacher of that viewpoint (for example, Larry Burkett). I know this can be perceived negatively, but it seems to me that when a person is so distinctly identified with a particular point of view, the use of the name speaks much more to the teaching than the person. The critique was far from personal and dealt constructively with ideas that are often presented as the "Christian" point of view.

I suspect Moore has received some criticism for his differing viewpoint and the method he used. Hopefully, his approach will be seen as a constructive and challenging voice in what it means to live as a responsible Christian steward. I certainly saw it as helpful. It is troubling that these days thoughtful debate is often taboo. Perhaps we will come to a place in the future where differing voices are seen as different facets of the diamond rather than heretical thoughts.

For some reason, so many people forget how consistently wrong some of these negative Christians perspectives have been through the years. I suppose anything could happen in the future--as the old saying goes, "even a broken clock is right twice a day." But there is biblical wisdom that speaks to a different reality consistent with the investment market--one that is full of long term hope and possibility. The chapter on the 'Creativity of the Patriarchs' sent my mind thinking of the multitude of biblical examples concerning the responsible creation of wealth and stewardship in the world. Abraham diversified. Jeremiah bought on the worst day of the market. Solomon expanded boundaries. Nehemiah built an incredible organization and navigated challenging circumstances through creative leadership. Paul was an entrepreneurial businessman while doing ministry. Jesus taught that responsible investing is tantamount to kingdom living, and showed that self giving is the ultimate investment. There are many more but time does not permit.

We live in an incredibly challenging environment to live as responsible stewards in the world. There seems to be an exceedingly thin slice somewhere between negative Christian voices and a hostile, unethical world where Moore's wholistic Christian voice for responsible stewardship can navigate.

5 out of 5 stars Thought provoking ideas on finances.......2003-11-21

I have read many books on finances that you would find on the shelves of Christian bookstores. Some are biblical and give good advice. Many feed greed and fear motives and do little to help people integrate financial concepts into their daily lives. Gary's book does an excellent job at two things:

                    1. Accurately describing a biblical worldview of money. As he so often points out in this book, Christians have been told to give 10% to their local church. But few have been trained how to be a good steward of all the money, talent, time and health that God blesses us with.

                    2. Challenging conventional ideas in the "Christian" media that feed on fears- Y2K for example- or greeds- the give/ to get mentality that many unbiblical ministers promote. Gary does a terrific job of presenting a balanced and passionate way to live and think about money that is honoring to Christ.

I consider it sad when many in the church recommend books such as Rich Dad/ Poor Dad- a worldview that is not even remotely biblical. I would love to see every concerned Christian read, meditate on, and implement the ideas that Gary presents in this book. Every disciple of Christ that is interested in growing in the understanding of stewardship should buy and read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Discover the Too-Often Hidden Dimensions of Real Wealth.......2003-06-28

Thinking evangelical Christians should find this book helpful. So would any other thinking person. Gary Moore brings his personal experiences, profound wisdom, and deep spirituality together to strip away the smoke and mirrors that all too often confuse people both spiritually and financially. He never promises riches. He does provide a firm, spiritually-oriented foundation that should help most people do very constructive things for others and themselves with their financial resources.

Some of what he has to say is the insight he has gained as a financial advisor and student of theology. Some is time-honored common sense. Sadly, as he reveals, too often religious and other leaders have advocated other paths, and the results may have been painful for those who took their advice.
Virtually anyone, from the wealthiest to those with very modest incomes, can find something in this volume which will be helpful and not difficult to follow. Moore empowers by giving the reader possibilities into what he or she may personally do to be a responsible steward, and his approaches literally work around the world. If you want to strengthen or renew your hope in your faith, yourself, and your world then "Faithful Finances 101" is an excellent place to start.

"The Internet is a writers' revolution," writes Debbie Ridpath Ohi in Writer's Online Marketplace. Definitely. But "finding the Web sites of publications that care to act professional, pay money, edit with heart, and stick around," warns Christopher Reynaga (creator of the Web zine The Write Market), "is like a mad crap-shoot." Once you do find those sites, it's not enough just to show up. You still need to know how to write a winning query and follow through with good content. As editor and Webmaster of Inkspot.com, an online Web site for writers, Ohi is perhaps uniquely qualified--and connected--to write about the brave new world of online writing. Her book is a solid generalist's introduction, covering everything from e-queries to e-rights and e-publishing. Ohi has called upon her e-colleagues to contribute pieces on such subjects as e-courses, e-networking, e-promoting, and "the chunk" ("the basic unit of discourse," explains Crawford Kilian, author of Writing for the Web, "for a great many Web users"). Ohi enlightens her readers about the hidden benefits of listservs (particularly the invitation-only ones), describes the five types of e-publishing for authors, and interviews 12 industry insiders. But the most enticing aspect of this book is its listings: 161 paying online publications, 10 potentially lucrative alternative markets, and 26 commercial e-publishers. Writing for the Internet can be great. It can also be unbelievably frustrating. You very well might find yourself dealing with, as one writer puts it here, "clueless kids with $9 million in venture capital." --Jane Steinberg

4 out of 5 stars A decent guide to writing for the Web.......2005-05-13

In "Writer's Online Marketplace," Debbie Ridpath Ohi profiles several hundred paying online markets that accept freelance work. Only 118 pages of this 262-page are devoted to market listings, however. Ohi begins with an overview of writing for online audiences, discussing details such as Netiquette, online queries and submissions, copyright and contractual issues, networking, promotion, e-publishing, and the many types of online markets (including where one can find market info online). Only later does she profile the various markets available to aspiring and experienced freelancers alike.

To date, I've read about dozen books on writing, publishing, and promoting books and other work (I'm quickly devouring my local library's collection!). "Writer's Online Marketplace" is, by far, one of the more useful, enjoyable, thoughtful, and organized guides available. When reading a self- or e-publishing book, I oftentimes find myself wondering how in the world the author ever managed to publish and sell such an atrocious manuscript. In fact, it seems as though many writers are jumping on the "how-to" bandwagon and rushing their ill-conceived and underdeveloped manuals to print, trying to cash in on the current e-publishing trend (some excellent examples of this phenomenon include "How to Make Money Publishing from Home" by Lisa Shaw and "How to Publish and Promote Online" by M. J. Rose & Angela Adair-Hoy). "Writer's Online Marketplace," while it does have its flaws, is a welcome break from some of the other train wrecks I've encountered.

Debbie Ridpath Ohi is the real thing - she's an excellent writer as well as an expert veteran in the field. Her sentences and chapters flow together very well; in contrast to many how-to guides, she writes in a mature tone and doesn't "talk down" to her readers (no "Idiot's Guide" here!). She also features articles from guest essayists; again, this isn't uncommon among writing/publishing guides, but what is exceptional in this case is that she manages to integrate them seamlessly into the book. Each essay is placed into its proper context, and features an introduction and follow-up by Ohi (imagine that!).

Now for the cons. While I did find some sections to be quite informative (Chapter 2, "Online Queries & Submissions"; Chapter 5, "Contracts & Copyright"), others were noticeably lacking. For instance, Chapter 3, "Types of Online Markets," was very basic; writers who know not the difference between web portals and corporate sites, for example, should pick up a "Dummies' Guide to the `Net" before even thinking about querying an online editor! Likewise with Chapter 4, "Where to Find Market Information" (answer: on the publication's web site (you don't say!?)). The chapters on e-publishing and online promotion were disappointingly basic as well. I felt as though Chapter 9, "Insider Views" (a compilation of short, 2-3 page essays by/interviews of industry insiders) could have been omitted entirely, thus leaving more room for online promotion/networking tips and a lengthier discussion of electronic publishing (particularly eBooks).

Of course, the biggest problem I had was that a majority of the information is out of date - especially that contained in the market listings. This is understandable, as "Writer's Online Marketplace" was published in 2001 and has yet to be updated. While I won't detract any "stars" for this inevitability, I also won't be buying the book any time soon!

Although I didn't go through every market listing, I did skim through the entire section and looked up those that interested me. All told, I think I tried to visit the web sites of approximately half on the publications listed in the book. Of these, *maybe* a quarter were still online, active, and accepting queries and/or submissions (and this is a generous estimate!). Most of the links were broken, and a search for the publication's title with Google usually failed to help. The links that were still valid tended to take me to sites that had not been updated in quite some time - several years, in many cases. A few of the publications hadn't went belly-up, but were actually generating all their content in-house. In the end, I don't think I found a single new prospect at all! You see, by the time I consulted "Writer's Online Marketplace," I had already signed up for a half dozen market-database newsletters. Thus, I was already aware of the few interesting and accurate listings I found in "Writer's Online Marketplace."

To illustrate just how pervasive the problem is, consider this: Ohi points readers to her site, Inkspot, for further information in many instances (a site that she's run since 1995 and even won awards for, mind you). However, the site was bought out by Xlibris 2000 and shut down just eight months later. Thus, even the links to the author's own site are dead! Not that this is anyone's "fault," really, since this is just the nature of the beast. Nonetheless, it does render guides to the World Wide Web obsolete in a ridiculously short period of time. Which brings me to the punch line: if you can borrow "Writer's Online Marketplace" from the library, a friend, whatever, I say go for it; otherwise, save your money and wait for a revised edition to come out. In the meantime, scout the `Net for free (or even subscription-based) market listings: it's a much better use of your time and/or money. "Writer's Online Marketplace" would have been a great buy in 2001, but it's just too old to be of much use in 2005.

Writer's Online Marketplace is one of the few review copies I have that will stay on my desk within easy reach.

Debbie Ridpath Ohi has compiled a book of informative articles-sage advice from other writers--to go with a section of very complete Market Listings, all paying! It covers everything from the very basics to "Insider Views." It even has a section that addresses "Online Promotion," my favorite subject. Its strength, however, is that list of more than 300 sites that pay their authors and the advice it gives on how to trace down sites that have changed addresses.

Each entry in Online Marketplace is very complete; that is a boon to writers looking for new markets because it curtails the amount of research they must do for themselves. Because the entries are so complete, the book would benefit from some easily spotted codes or icons at the beginning of each listing. Perhaps we can look forward to that in the next edition. I'm sure there will be one. Authors will want to keep on top of this rapidly changing market in yearly editions.

(Carolyn Howard-Johnson's first novel, This is the Place, has won eight awards. Her newly released Harkening: A Collection of Stories Remembered has won three. Kristie Leigh Maguire, author, says "Carolyn Howard-Johnson will be one of the greats.")

2 out of 5 stars A Good Guide for low paying markets.......2001-03-23

I looked through this book today at a bookstore and found that there were a number of mistakes in the markets. Maybe that was the situation when Ohi wrote the book, I don't know. Also, most of the book was "filler" rather than the markets themselves. I have written a lot for the Web, and a large number of the well paying markets were not mentioned in her book either. In fact, I would say that the overwhelming majority of the sites listed in her book are the very low paying ones. I would recommend the online market guide by Anthony and Paul Tedesco over this one.
