Book Description
A History of Money presents a detailed history of money from Charlemagne's reform to the end of the Silver Wars in 1896. John Chown provides a summary of 20th century events and an analysis of how the past relates to present problems. He shows that most difficulties associated with money today have precedents in the past. Chown covers the great periods of monetary disputes: Henry VIII and Sir Thomas Gresham, Isaac Newton's Great Recoinage of 1696, Ricardo and the Bullion Committee Report, the battle between the banking and currency schools, and the issues of bimetallism and European monetary union in the late 19th century. The monetary theories of such diverse figures as Locke, Defoe, Swift and Sir Walter Scott are discussed as well as those of many economists. The book provides international coverage and includes material on the controversial private banking period in the United States between Independence and the Civil War.

Customer Reviews:
Entertaining but not a reference.......1999-12-22
Chown, a practitioner instead of an academic, is wise and pithy, covering a lot of territory from Charlemagne to the end of the 19th century. He wisely gives equal time to coins, paper money, and bank deposits. He knows the academic literature, but writes mainly for educated laypeople. The book is fun to read, but is too short and anecdotal to be a reference. But you will learn that many 20th century controversies in monetary affairs go back to the Middle Ages and Renaissance. See how playing sleight of hand with banks and paper money has proven seductive for generations. The terminology changes, but not the dilemmas and temptations. And wisdom is likewise of long date, namely the work of Richard Cantillon around 1720, David Hume around 1750, and Henry Thornton in 1802.
Better books in this vein include Jim Grant's Money of the Mind", and Glyn Davies's "A History of Money from Ancient Times to the Present Day." Somebody should also bring Lloyd Mints's "History of Banking Theory" back in print.

Book Description
This book focuses on the money of Eastern Central Asia to c. AD 800, a period of over 900 years, across a vast geographical area with a very diverse population of different cultures and traditions. The only relevant historical accounts are those found in the Chinese dynastic histories, yet these contain few references to money in Eastern Central Asia. This study therefore depends almost entirely on the archaeological evidence for money found at sites in the region, in the form of coins and contemporary documentary evidence. The book is arranged in four parts. The first part presents the background to the study, the second the numismatic evidence, the third gives the evidence for money in the contemporary documents excavated at sites in Eastern Central Asia, and the concluding part brings together the data from the numismatic and documentary evidence to create a new framework for money in early Eastern Central Asia.
Book Description
Business intelligence, text mining, environmental scanning, scenario planning, competitor analysis, and actionable information are terms often heard today in the business world. Pulling these terms together in a way that enables the terms to take on lucid strategic meaning can be extremely important to today's business planner. Business Intelligence Using Smart Techniques is a book about using text mining to perform environmental scanning, and using scenarios and simulation to perform competitor analysis. This book focuses on methods that identify and extract important company-external business information. This book addresses the conversion of the business information into business intelligence. And this book addresses the use of business intelligence to improve a company's competitive position by showing how potentially profitable actions can be taken based on the intelligence.

Practical Guide to Build Business Intelligence.......2001-11-18
Any business owner or corporate executive looking for competitive opportunities or an effective way to avoid being blindsided by competitors' activities or trapped by unfavorable trends should think about applying the business intelligence system clearly laid out in Business Intelligence Using Smart Techniques.
Charles Halliman's pragmatic approach is perfect for our times. While so many are desperately trying to keep afloat, thinking their only choices are to sink or swim madly, Halliman suggests a manageable process to uncover possibilities for breaking out of the doldrums. It's a challenge to divert resources to efforts like developing business intelligence, perceived to take extraordinary amounts of time and offer payoffs only in the long-term. But Halliman shows this does not have to be the case.
Halliman not only presents very straightforward tools for analyzing and using business intelligence to develop actionable ideas, he shows how text mining techniques can reduce the time and resources needed to turn large amounts of information about competitors and business environment trends into manageable business intelligence.
While the neatly packaged system Halliman describes can be used to more accurately assess a company's current situation and identify immediate tactics, its bigger return will be realized when used as part of an ongoing program of identifying success strategies for the ever-unfolding future. Even the near-term future holds opportunities, in the economy's turnaround. Now is the time for a company to ready itself.
Better yet, why not put the company on the leading edge of that recovery now, by being better informed about the business environment and competitors' activities? If they're in a holding pattern...imagine the possibilities!
The book provides an easy-to-follow, structured method of presenting information. Halliman employs review and preview techniques, so the reader can understand the context of new information, each step following logically from the last, with summaries that describe a progressively growing, but comprehendible and manageable system. Real examples give the reader hands-on experience as the system is built and then comes together to yield realistic actions.
Halliman is On Target.......2001-05-23
The data mining techniques and methodologies presented by Charles Halliman work. Whether your focus is research, marketing or consulting you would be wise to invest in "Business Intelligence Using Smart Techniques".
Sound marketing strategies and production policies.......2001-03-13
In Business Intelligence Using Smart Techniques, business intelligence consultant Charles Halliman emphasizes the analysis of business information already gathered by corporate researchers, managers, and policy makers. Halliman presents an informative introduction to the performance of environmental scanning using "text mining" techniques, and utilizing scenarios and manual simulations to perform competitor analyses. Readers will learn to convert business information into business intelligence for sound marketing strategies and production policies, showing how potentially profitable actions can be taken based on gathered information drawn from today's highly competitive local, regional, national, and global marketplace. Highly recommended reading for business students, entrepreneurs, policy strategists, and corporate marketing executives.

Customer Reviews:
Not worth the money.......2006-06-11
This book is a nostagic look at ice cream manufacturing and store operation. We have opened 30 plus ice cream stores over the last 25 years and would not recommend anyone using this book as a reference. This guy enjoys making ice cream and spinning a good yarn but in the real world of ice cream store operation his ideas are outdated and seriously flawed. Ice cream shops work in only a few areas of this country and require hard work and long hours. They fail at an alarming rate and rarely gross enough to make a decent living. If you are planning on an ice cream store operation make sure you do a decent demographical study before attempting it.
Great Book.......2006-03-09
This book was an interesting guide to ice cream. It has helped me gain an insight in how to make and distribute ice cream. It answered most of my questions and helped me decide my next course of action.
Excellent book for ice cream professionals.......2002-11-21
Working as a dairy technician in a medium sized ice-cream-factory, I needed something to expand my knowledge on the subject. That's why I bought this book. And I was amazed: Ice Cream and Frozen Desserts: A Commercial Guide to Production and Marketing really met my expectations and did a lot more. It's well written, easily accessible and thorough. A must buy for both ice-cream-professionals and enthusiasts.
Excellent description of all phases.......2002-10-10
This book was *exactly* what I was looking for to help me get started in this business. A very broad overview of many different topics related to the ice cream business.
As my plans are to possibly open a parlor, some of the aspects of the commercial operations were not useful to me, but it *was* at least interesting to see how the big boys do it.
The one area that I was a little disappointed in was the business aspects of it. There were some general discussions of things to accomplish, without any real instruction in how to go about actually *accomplishing* them.
Overall, well worth the (rather steep, I admit...) price.
Very helpful in setting up a frozen desert establishment.......1999-10-07
This book contains invaluable information about making ice cream and gelato and about setting up and marketing the product. I was not disappointed and learned a lot.

Book Description
This is the first UK textbook to deal specifically with the management of wine sales. It covers all aspects of choosing, purchasing and storing wine in a restaurant, how to draw up wine lists, market and then sell wines, train specialist staff, and select the necessary equipment. The study of wine is an increasingly important part of hotel, catering and related studies. The text adopts a specific hotel and catering emphasis and broadens out into related areas of beverage management.
Book Description
Get the advantage you need to compete in the worldwide food and wine tourism marketplace!
Wine, Food, and Tourism Marketing is an overview of contemporary practices and trends in food and wine tourism marketing. International in scope, the book draws on studies from Canada, England, France, New Zealand, South Africa, and Scotland for analyses of contemporary practices and trends that help you develop, implement, and maintain strategic competitive advantages. The book looks at case studies of business operations, seasonality, destination image, and the development of business networks.
Equally valuable as a professional resource for practitioners and as a textbook for upper-level and graduate students in tourism, hospitality, and wine and food studies, Wine, Food, and Tourism Marketing examines the importance of food and wine tourism to rural regional development. The book presents destination management planning and marketing initiatives for specific markets that can be easily adapted and applied to a wider range of wine tourism settings. Tourism marketing researchers and academics address vital issues such as the importance of collective marketing strategies, viticulture, design factors for online tourism information, and the use of food images in promotional material and positioning strategies. The book includes:
a 2001 research study on French public sector management of wine tourism an examination of the cider industry in Somerset, England a look at the implications of non resident tourist markets on British Columbia's emerging wine tourism industry an analysis of the types of food images used in French regional tourism brochures a national study of seasonality issues on wine tourism in New Zealand a look at post-apartheid tourism trends on South Africa's Western Cape a survey of eight wineries on the Niagara Falls wine route with implications for marketing strategies a study of the use of local and regional food for destination marketing of South Africa a look at how food-related tourism in the United Kingdom is being promoted using the World Wide Web
Wine, Food, and Tourism Marketing is an essential read for practitioners and educators involved in tourism and hospitality, marketing, food and wine studies, and rural regional development.
Customer Reviews:
Just academic papers.......2006-05-06
I was very disappointed with this book. It is not a practical how-to guide in any way shape or form. Rather, it is a collection of academic journal articles. Maybe you can find some interesting stats for a marketing plan, but if you're looking for a comprehensive, practical guide to marketing your wine business, this is not it.

Customer Reviews:
getting your feet wet is only the first step.......2004-04-07
Any book that proudly uses such over-the-top buzzwords as "insider guide" and "A to Z" should really pack a lot of punch. It should be filled with useful, lengthy and original material and make the reader feel as if they have really invested their valuable time wisely.
Unfortunately, the publisher name "WetFeet" speaks volumes about the severe limitations of this empty pamphlet. They are asking way too much money from people who are looking for jobs. They deliver only the bare essentials and hardly anything new or worthwhile.
Tons of other books on this subject do a much better job: What Color is Your Parachute? is only one.
I Got Results.......2003-04-11
I was having a really hard time in the job market after I got laid off from my last job. It had been some time since I'd been a job seeker, so naturally my skills were a little rusty. After spending several months on the hunt, I realized just how rusty they were. This guide laid out the frame work for networking (oops, I had sort of forgot about that part of the job search), and providing some real skill-building when it came time interview. I'm finally settled into a great position and I attribute my success directly to the information I learned from this guide. You've got to try it. It really helps!!
Getting over the Networking Hump.......2003-02-25
I've always hated that you have to network to get the job you want. But I now realize that it doesn't have to be a schmarmy, phoney thing, but rather a building up of real and positive relationships and calling upon those relationships in the right way to get you the job you deserve. This guide helped break down the process so that I am now pursuing contacts and feeling more confident about doing so. Especially in such tough times, it's important to be able to call on those you know to get you noticed. Otherwise, you're just a dime a dozen in the sea of resumes that go out to any and all job openings these days. That said, I've been able to set up some great discussions and even a few key interviews. I would recommend that people get this guide to help them over the networking hump and realize that you have more connections you can explore than you might think.
Buy this book and memorize it........1999-05-12
This book got me my dream job. I am a man of few words, and it's impossible to explain without reading the book, but I wouldn't have gotten my foot in the door with this company had I not utilized the strategies contained in this book. It's so important to prepare a personal list of attributes for your dream job, but once you do that, read this book for excellent strategies on sifting through companies, interviewing, and nailing the offer home. It certainly rocks the proverbial job-hunting house.

It's the American dream;to be able to make so much money at an early age that you could decide when to retire, knowing full well that you have enough money stashed away to ensure a life not burdened by financial restraints. In this new book, the fifth in the Rich Dad series, financial guru Robert Kiyosaki provides practical insight on how to put together a financial plan which will not only make you prosperous but will also allow you to map out the freedom to choose your own retirement age. Built upon Kiyosaki's own personal experiences; he retired at the age of 49; he shows how you can take advantage of smart investments in real estate and in the stock market to help you control your own financial destiny.
Customer Reviews:
Check Out the Person.......2007-06-28
Saw this guy hawking his hype on TV and decided to do a little background checking. While his general priciples are expoused by any financial "guru" the fact remains he's been bankrupt at least once following his own information. Real estate is risky business and not the bed of roses he makes it out to be. Just wait until your first stinker of a renter and when the state comes a calling because the person you rented a 1 bedroom apartment to has two kids and the law doesn't allow this (after the person told you they had no kids).
Wouldn't surprise me that most of his money comes from selling these books more than real estate.
A good read.......2007-05-22
Like other author's book, this one is also easy to follow, a good bedtime read. Unfortunately like other books it lacks more specific detail on the subject although it is present more here then in the other books.
The whole series is a good eye opener but author would do all of us a favor if he would make all of it into one book.
Good Motivator.......2007-02-26
Once again, the Rich Dad series has an inspiring and motivational book. No it doesn't give you all of the answers, but tells you how you need to think to be rich. Why do most lottery winners go broke? Because they don't know how to think and act rich and just blow their money. This book will definitley help you think rich and become rich if you beleive in yourself.
A bit old.......2007-02-16
This is Rich Dad Poor Dad reprinted with a few additions. The message of the book is correct: create assets that create passive income, avoid debt, get out of the rat race, don't count on job security etc.
One element is missing, though. The risk of building a business is also high, as well as failure rate. Kyosaki is a very successful businesman, but like many other successful people he fails to mention the role of chance in building a successful business. Yes, if you persevere, you may build a good business and become financially independent. But you also have a chance of being broke, bancrupt and have a heart attack. Dentists on the average financially do better than college dropouts, even though some of the dropouts may become very rich, like Bill Gates.
By all means, read this book and follow its principles. But read also Taleb's "Fooled by Randomness", a sobering balancer.
Order is Not Important - The Message Is!.......2006-12-04
Many know that I am (proudly) an advocate of the teachings of Kiyosaki. However, that does not mean he can get off without some constructive criticism every now and then as I see it.
First the positive: Retire Young - Retire Rich (RY-RR) is an solid (but not necessarily essential) component of the RDPD series of books/products. Within RY-RR one will review the key components of his prevous books and add to the base the important role of leverage and how it accelerates one's goal of becoming financially independent/wealthy. As I have stated in previous reviews, he begins his books after RDPD with a sound review of previous lessons and fundamentals and ends with new thoughts/introductions to new concepts. Within RY-RR leverage is applied/incorporated to the teachings of the first three books of his RDPD series and when combined - accelerates wealth-building. Specifically, he introduces an explanation (backed by sound references - primarily by government sources) of the passive-portfolio income levels. Second, he discusses in-depth that retiring young and rich is not about thinking differently, but thinking the opposite of how the poor and middle class think. Next, in Section III (until the end), he goes into the leverage of passive and portfolio income strategies that will accelerate one's goal of becoming financially independent while you're still young enough to enjoy it.
However, there are flaws. This book, if you read the first three books in the series (and maybe the fourth, which I don't consider in my reviews because of the target audience, which I am not a part of) will be slow - Sections I and II were forced reads. One may find the need to read hoping to catch every gem of wisdom and thought of a powerful force in the finance/investment world (Kiyoaski), but may find it slow. Having read the first few books in the series, the power and discussion of leverage may seem a bit late - either because you know about it and/or discovered it if you are an action-oriented reader. Also, I agree that the concept of leverage is important - it is a KEY ingredient to beooming financially successful and independent. This book would have been better placed within RDPD and CFQ with Section III being incorporated within Rich Dad's 'Guide to Investing.'
Now if you are only a casual reader of investing and finance then let me disclaim and insert a spoiler: Read pg. 104 and you have what you're looking for. But if you really want to continue in building your millionaire mindset influenced by Kiyosaki - read the entire book and have fun with Section III.
The good news as the reviewer of this book is that Kiyosaki stands firm and I believe in his concepts because they are many of the concepts I utilize in my investments. Furthermore, a financial paradigm shift is a on-going process. Sometimes redunancy is good - but again, in this particular book, it goes on too long. Allow me to give you some key points to focus on:
- Serving more and more people with less and less effort
- Adhearing to and following your plan even during times of disappointment
- Conepts of shorts, puts, and options - don't gloss over this: If you are a "doer" in this section, you may disagree with Kiyosaki points (some of which I do), but the concepts are well-explained in lay terms.
Bottomline: Is RY-RR essential reading in the Kioyaski series? The answer is "no," plain and simple. Is it worth the read? To use one of Kiyosaki's favorite phrases: "It depends." It depends on where you are financially, your knowledge base, and your understanding and application of his previous work. But just as important: It depends on your patience to get through the first two sections of the book and overcoming what I am confident will be a shared opinion: Your willingness to hear the same message again with the topic of leverage appearing two books too late.
Oh - least we all forget: Kiyosaki, as of the placement and order of this book within his series, does not give you a blueprint. So, if you're reading hoping that it's written with concrete steps of how to reach the affluent-super rich categories then don't buy - I will argue that you will be disappointed almost with every book written by him. But if you seeking fundamentals and looking to increase your knowledge level and expand on the mind-set format of which he writes for a practical $18.00 value - you may enjoy (all points considered in the review above).
Average customer rating:
- A Good Read!
- Not too bad...

A Good Read!.......2001-03-21
Joseph S. Coyle offers basic advice for people pondering retirement. The book outlines straightforward strategies for saving and investing, and urges investors to start early and to put as much as they can into 401(k) plans and IRAs. So much for the obvious. Coyle also offers specific and useful guidelines for buying mutual funds and allocating assets. He realistically presents issues you may face in retirement, such as the emotional difficulties involved in leaving a career and having enough money to support your lifestyle (so buy a bond instead of that snazzy watch). Some of the book's basic advice will seem redundant to sophisticated investors, but the more detailed information will intrigue even them. We at getAbstract recommend this book for anyone looking for guidance about saving and investing for retirement. [getAbstract note: The investment advice here - tax laws, stock markets, and what not - is extremely U.S.-oriented, although the lifestyle information is broadly applicable.]
Not too bad..........2000-03-31
Don't be fooled by the title, the author spends a lot of the book explaining the realities of retirement. That is, we're living longer in retirement and not saving enough to meet the challenge that presents. Early retirement will take a determined effort and persistent savings to achieve. Just think about it, if you retire at 55 and expect to live to 90 you are talking about 35 years of living off your investments! The book is well written and even gives some good ideas of what towns you might want to consider for retirement living. Retirement, let alone early retirement presents a challenge for everyone, this book is a good place to begin thinking about the subject.

Great information for everyone!!!.......2005-06-15
This book is a great read! It lays out the rules for having credit cards and checking accounts that I wish I had when starting out with my personal finances. I finally found out how checks are used by banks and department stores. And I like the ways to protect myself from getting my personal information ripped off and my credit ruined. And the ways to get out of financial trouble if your in it are wonderful.
This book also has many ways to get free money in the form of grants for college and starting a business that I find useful. Many foundations and the government have a lot of money they give away every year. There is a lot of free money out there that I didn't even know about, like credit cards and special financing deals for cars and furniture.
I always thought that a budget was about counting pennies, but I was wrong. The way to create a budget in the book is easy and makes sense. And there is a lot of good information about easy investing for the future. I loved it!

Excellent book.......2006-11-06
It's an easy read from someone with a short attention span. Plain english; a story that just takes you in. I am grateful to Larry for writing this book and sharing that this alternate lifestyle is possible.
It's encouraging me to save more.
Read this book and you will retire young!.......2006-04-15
Larry Ferstenou does an excellent job of pulling together many of the things you need to look at when deciding if you can retire young, and what steps you can take to put yourself on that path.
This book was written by someone who practices what he preaches as he was able to retire in his early 40s. He touches on financial issues, social issues (the "work ethic"), and why people work.
Some of the figures he uses in his financial calculation may not apply to your situation, but the concepts likely will.
I would recommend this book to anyone, even if they are not thinking of retiring early.
Practical & Achievable, A Priceless Book.......2006-04-15
My wife and I are very thankful that Larry and his wife Kris took the time to write down the path they took to reach financial freedom in "You Can Retire Young!".
Unlike so many other books written by the so called "experts" (who are still working full-time), Larry and Kris write from their really life experience. This make this book all the more valuable.
I have not found many other books written by ordinary working people who have actually been able to successfully retire early. There are two books referenced in "You Can Retire Young!" written by actual early retirees, but in my opinion, "You Can Retire Young!" is by far the best.
I say this because "You Can Retire Young!" presents very practical steps that can be accomplished at any life stage on our way to retirement.
We purchased "You Can Retire Young!" and have read it twice. And we plan to keep re-reading it along with the notes we have taken plus reading the other books that are referenced until we also are successfully retired young.
We are a 38 years married couple, who by following the steps laid out in this book are much closer to successfully retiring early then before reading it and to us that's priceless.
We wish every reader of this book a successful and early retirement.
Great Information, But ............2006-02-24
This book contains a lot of good information, and is well written, so I would recommend it as a great starting point. My only concern is, why was this book written? Did the authors need the money? If that's the case, then you have to look at the title of the book and the advice given with the understanding that the authors needed to work to make their early retirement possible.
Well Written, Enjoyable Book On Investing and Retirement!.......2005-05-14
I came across this book after thinking about retiring at age 51. It had good reviews so I thought why not. At that time there was none in stock and I had to wait at least 4 weeks to get a hold of a copy. It was definitely worth the wait! I found it to be very encouraging and sensible.
There is a lot to this book that will benefit anybody thinking about retirement now or in the future. Even if you never plan on retiring there is plenty of financial advice that makes it worthwhile. I've read many financial books and the author tells it as good or better than most. He definitely has a knack for writing and can hold your interest while teaching you what real financial planning should be.
I especially liked the window into the author's (Larry Ferstenou) and his wife Kris's life to show how they did it, what retirement is like for them, and what you should plan on in retirement both financially and psychologically.
Definitely worth getting, reading, and then keeping as a reference.
