      This is a good book, but I quickly realized I didn't need it. I have worked for 15 years in various office settings, and was able to complete many homework assignments without the assistance of this book. The only pieces that I had to focus on were the different office conflict scenarious listed through the book, but if your class does not focus on these entries, the book may not be too useful.

      I obtained this book more than ten years ago when I took Ms. Hamilton's class at Tarrant County College. I still have it and refer to it from time to time. I also used the communication styles from this book for a team presentation in another class, at University of Phoenix, a few years ago. My teammate and I had both taken Ms. Hamilton's class at TCC (different years) and were very impressed with the book, had both held on to it and use it for reference in communication styles, resumes, interviews, and presentations. I highly recommend it.

      This book has some great information in it and it could stand alone very easily on its content. The CD-ROM, however, needs work. It is nearly impossible to install since it continually prompts you to install QuickTime 6.0, even if you already have it! The CD-ROM also requires you to turn off all of your virus protection to use it. I give the actual book a B+ and the CD-ROM a grade of D-.

      Please let your instructor know of the CD-ROM issues so complaints can be filed with the publisher to get this fixed.

      Communicating for Results is a good primer for the student or person who wants to improve his/her communication abilities.

      Among the topics covered include:

      1. Information on the different types of interviews.
      2. Nonverbal communication in organizations.
      3. How to be an effective listener (hint: we were born with one mouth and two ears!).
      4. How to deliver informative presentations.
      5. The types of visual aids and how to use them.
      6. How to make persuasive presentations.
      7. Participating in small groups.
      8. How to prepare for a presentation by researching, supporting, and delivering your ideas.

      All in all, a good basic book for a 2 or 4-year school. The writing style is simple without being simplistic.

      Recommended.

                        Saloons, barrooms, honky-tonks, or watering holes--by whatever name, they are part of the mythology of the American West, and their stories are cocktails of legend and fact, as Richard Selcer, David Bowser, Nancy Hamilton, and Chuck Parsons demonstrate in these accounts of four legendary Texas establishments.

                        In most Western communities, the first saloon was built before the first church, and the drinking establishments far outnumbered the religious ones. Beyond their obvious functions, saloons served as community centers, polling places, impromptu courtrooms, and public meeting halls.

                        Here, the spotlight is thrown on four celebrated saloons:

                        Jack Harris's Saloon and Vaudeville Theater San Antonio

                        Ben Dowell's Saloon El Paso

                        The Iron Front Austin

                        The White Elephant Fort Worth

                        Selcer and his coauthors start with the origins of each establishment and follow their stories until the last drink was served and the places closed down for good. They discuss all aspects of the business: the owners, the liquor provided, the entertainment, the troubling issues of segregation by race and gender, and the way order was maintained--if it was at all.

                        Along the way they consider the ornate bar construction, old floor plans, the liquor suppliers, the attire of the gentlemen gamblers, the variety of casino games that emptied men's pockets, fatal shootings that occurred, and more. Vintage photos of the establishments, along with some of their more famous customers, further take the reader back to the Old West.

                        What did every town in the Old West have at least one of and more often several? Churches, shops? You knew all along - saloons. When a town was settled a saloon was usually the first building to go up. Now, it's not that all were hard drinkers (although many were), but a saloon served as much more than a bar. It was a gathering place, a makeshift meeting hall and, if you watch TV's "Deadwood," you learn it was also used as a courtroom.

                        True, they were also the scenes of brawls and gunfights. This territory was called the "Wild West" for good reason. Nonetheless, these saloons or watering holes, as they were sometimes called, are very much a part of our western history.

                        A past President of the Western Writers of America, Leon Claire Metz, has said, "Without saloons, the Wild West would have been dull, essentially unrecognizable. Yet the saloon story, until now, has never been told with such clarifying candor. If you understand saloons, you will understand the West: why it was Wild, why it was great, and why it will always be remembered."

                        Reading "Legendary Watering Holes" is a major step in understanding the West. The authors focus on four of the most famous (or infamous) saloons in Texas, shedding light on their owners, the entertainment, and even the liquor that was served. Accompanied by vintage photos, each saloon is described from the day it opened until its swinging doors were closed forever.

                        Historians and Western buffs will find much to relish in this well researched volume.

                                  With hundreds of messages a year, it is hard to get the attention from prospective customers that marketers would like. E-promotions looks at the effectiveness of e-mail promotions as a complement to marketing strategies used by booksellers. A must read for marketers and e-mail users alike.

                                  The substance of this book is a comparison of email marketing promotions from Amazon, B&N, and Borders. Some interesting numbers are presented but, overall, this book is nothing more than a primer for those entering the eMarketing field. I question some of the conclusions which the author arrives at given the limited number of participants (182) in his own ePromotion campaign.

                                  Not a bad book but there certainly are others I would pursue with greater vigor than this one.

This publication builds on this eye catching phenomenon to describe the efficiency and legitimacy of e-mail marketing for targeted audiences in the publishing industry. Great book for college students and marketing profesionals.
