Book Review.......2001-08-03
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I consider it a must for anyone who ever has to speak before a group no matter what size.
What every CEO needs to deliver powerful presentations.......2000-08-22
This book is a powerhouse of practical recommendations that are strategically driven. In addition to helping to create great presentations, Rob also addresses how to prepare your audience before the actual engagement. It was very evident after reading this book that his insights are based on real life experiences and success stories, not on armchair academia. As a CEO, it is clear to me that professional speaking opportunities are an effective way to position your organization as innovative, forward thinking and as a viable resource. Immediately after applying Rob's ideas, our company experienced an increase in business. Recently after presenting at the annual board of directors meeting to a group of 100 people, I was told that, because of my presentation, our firm was chosen. The ideas in this book are easy to apply and they work. Five stars ....a must read for every CEO serious about growing their business.

Many articles and books have been written about speaking. Rob Sherman has created his 1aws by integrating some of the best practices in those articles with his own personal experiences and wisdom. Mr. Sherman is motivatiating and enthusiastically encourages the novice to improve and the seasoned vetern to refine. He postulates that successful executives need to include public speaking into their management tool-kit. Mr. Sherman blends content development, emotional readiness and tips for delivery. The book is well referenced for those who would wish to pursue his 21 Laws in more depth.
The book can be read quickly. The cross-referencing is well done and some may find that to be the best feature. A reader could find value in the entire collection ideas, or select ones which may fit their individual situation.
A very practical guide to speaking.......2000-08-16
I find this book extremely useful. It contains a variety of tips and insights I hadn't seen before (e.g., don't end a speech with a Question & Answer session - many good speakers do it at about the twenty minute mark).
Most of all, this book is a practical guide to help prepare for your next presentation and critique it afterwards. The book's organization is excellent - around Sherman's "laws" of speaking along with a series of practical reminders (e.g., 8 tips for how to handle your notes while speaking). That makes it easy to prepare a checklist prior to one's next presentation. After my last presentation (which was very successful, by the way), I used the book to find two good ways it could have been improved.

Gibbs on Success.......2006-12-22
First off this is not an autobiography but a book that talks about how Joe Gibbs succeeded in the face of adversity. After reading this you will really get to know the kind of person Joe Gibbs is. He talked very frankly about his failures as much as he did his successes. I never knew the kind of financial blunders he had made because it seems he was so successful in football and racing that not much was ever said about business adventures outside these two arenas.
Joe does talk a lot about his relationship with God in this book. It is very interesting that a number of other very successful people he did business with were also Christians. It is done with good taste and helps you to get to know his personal values.
In this book you will find how Joe Gibbs kept the faith so to speak and continued to work towards being a success even after great financial loss. One has to give him credit for not quiting. He lays down his game plan for life as he sees it which can be very helpful. There are 20 chapters laid out under 7 different topics. Those topics are: Success in your Career, Your Financial Success, Success in Building Your Team, Success in Personal Relationships, Success in Moral Choices and the Final Lap.
Overall I think it is a great book but I only gave it 3 stars because it just didn't keep my attention from one chapter to the next. There is a lot of great stuff in here and that is why I would recommend it to anyone to read.
I learned a thing or two........2004-07-07
As a racecar driver, I was drawn to the stories of building a successful race team. What I discovered was a well-structured text on the values necessary to be successful in any aspect of daily life, and a reminder of what is most important in life. This book certainly has religious tones, as Joe Gibbs thanks God for the opportunities and lessons given to him, but I believe these lessons are also valid in a secular context: Success in your career, finances, team building, personal relationships, moral choices, and health.
Joe Gibbs helps the reader to understand the principles presented with fascinating examples from his own life. This is a great read for anybody, regardless of whether you are church patron, a racecar driver, or a football player; but even more so if you are.
Not an autobiography, but his game plan for success.......2003-07-23
To reach the pinnacle of the ultra-competitive NFL (3 Super Bowl victories) is by itself a remarkable feat. To reach the pinnacle of the ultra-competitive NASCAR Winston Cup series (2 championships) is also remarkable.
To do both in the same career? That's unheard of, unless you are Joe Gibbs.
As a Pittsburgh Steelers fan, I was never followed the NFC too closely, but then when Tony Stewart joined Joe Gibbs Racing, I started looking at Joe Gibbs and his past accomplishments. What he has done in the sports world is truly remarkable.
"Racing to Win" is more about Joe's principles for life and success more than his life story per se, although he uses several incidents in his own life to illustrate his points (including a perilous brush with bankruptcy during his coaching career). Throughout it all, Gibbs doesn't really toot his own horn, describing himself as "just a P.E. major made good", but the fact his that success seems to stick to him like a magnet lends creedence to his principles.
Joe has outlined 6 fundamental prinicples that are necessary for a successful life that is also complete. Although one can have some success without all of them (and Joe presents his ex-boss, Jack Kent Cooke as an example), one will fall short of a full and complete life without all of them (career, finances, relationships, team-building, morality, health). These 6, applied with copious amounts of hard work, discipline and perseverence, are Gibbs's game plan of success.
As noted by other reviewers, Gibbs' Christianity has a prominent role in his book, but anyone remotely familiar with him should know that it has a prominent role in his life as well. To criticize him for nothing more than actually practicing that which he preaches is a bit unfair, IMO.
Joe's own track record of accomplishments speaks for itself. Together with Ken Abraham, he has written a book that is instructive without being preachy, entertaining (his anecdote about broadcasting with Mike Ditka will leave you laughing out loud), and will make you think about what he has to say. It is also not a overly long read, either.
If you want to study the "why" more than the "what" behind Joe Gibbs, I highly recommend this book.
God, Family, Career.......2003-06-21
Coach will help you get on the right track. No race car required. If you want help getting your life together, here it is! There are no big secrets, no get rich quick schemes. Truthfully many of us already have heard much of what Joe talks about. Unfortunately many of us weren't listening.
This book may be a little light on in-depth views of racing and football. In the balance however, it encourages personal growth, spiritual growth, relationship growth (with God,family, friends and business associates)and most importantly everlasting life and an understanding of the most important playbook ever written.
Thanks Joe!
Confusing Title.......2003-06-13
If you are looking for a book about religion and how one man's experience with God has affected him, then you might like this book. If you are looking for any real information about auto racing, you will almost certainly be disappointed.

Customer Reviews:
For Beginners..........2007-03-08
...and not really suitable for experienced Work-Shop leaders. I tried this book to get a sense of the quality of the books in this series. Personally I consider this book as too basic, and I must say that the quality of the provided material, such as for instance the slides, is not the standard I would expect. I would recommend this book for not so experienced trainers or people that would want to run an inhouse workshop for their own team.
easy to follow.......2005-04-26
I think the CD included with this book is a marvelous tool for the facilitator. The powerpoint and overhead slide presentations on the CD give you training programs for two days, one day, half day or one hour. The book itself walks you through step by step on how to design an effective training program. This is simple enough to follow for even the novice trainer, yet it is comprehensive enough to meet a seasoned trainers needs. I plan on incorporating many of the learning activities in our training program.

WORKS WELL FOR ME.......2001-08-19
I recently purchased this manual but did not fully appreciate its true value until it arrived in the mail. I looked at the table of contents, then quickly flipped through the pages. After studying a particular lesson, I introduced it into my class the following day. It turned into a good discussion and I walked away from the class feeling pretty good. The students liked it and the total time I invested in preparation was the 15 minutes I spent the day before. I have used the book to fill in the gaps of my communications class to make it more interesting. I plan to incorporate other lessons into my class for next term. Big thanks to the author.
Creative approach to training manual.......2001-03-12
When I bought this book, I thought that it contained the usual simple training exercises that you find in the majority of training manuals, but I was impressed by the fact that everything is written in a format that makes training easy. I am a business manager and am take training very seriously. I have been able to incorporate these exercises into my training plans. They are reproducible. My staff has given me very positive feedback about the contents. Jon from Sacramento
Good Curriculum Work.......2001-01-07
This is a useful lesson plan and outline. I have incorporated several of the lessons into my intro business course over the past six months. I teach at the CC level and student class critiques suggest that the exercises are useful in understanding communcation concepts.
Waste of Money.......2000-12-20
As a communications consultant, I read the favorable reviews for this "book" (actually, photocopied, three-hole-punched, loose-leaf pages) and thought there might be useful focused exercises I could adapt and incorporate in my workshops. How wrong I was. In my opinion, this thing is a joke. The concepts and writing are about at a 6th grade level, and I can't imagine any self-respecting intelligent employees or students sitting still for the inane, pointless exercises. In short, I feel as if I were cheated and am disappointed in Amazon for even offering a publication (this doesn't even come close to my understanding of what a book is) that presents so little substance for such a high price. Shame on the author, shame on Amazon.
WOW...what a difference in my sales staff!.......2000-01-24
I purchased this manual for my Human Resource people to have a meaningful training program. Little did I know what a tremendous impact it would have on not only the HR folks but also the sales staff who borrowed the book. I leafed through it and found that the exercises and examples were interesting and entertaining... in a word...fun.
Then the most amazing thing happened- the staff started putting these skills into practice. Immediately my salespersons were able to better communicate and understand the customers needs. Sales went up...like no $300 sales seminar they ever attended! This manual keeps paying for itself. Big Thanks to Karen Osmak, she cuts thru the BS and gets right to the heart of interpersonal skills. Using this book has revitalized my sales and HR staff and heck even I learned something!
If you are hesitating to plunk down [the] $, don't wait- you'll get it back the first time you use it. Whether a businessman, salesman, or even a doctor who has a medical practice--if you deal with people you can benefit from the information.
If you teach at a business school- you'll love it even more. The darn thing is set up to provide you with lesson plans, questionaires and handouts, all you do is turn on the charm and start teaching. It nearly teaches itself.
I'm a big believer in this manual- it helped me get promoted from HR to Director of Sales.
