Book Description
Recent developments in the electricity sector, including the recent privatization in the UK, have inspired utility planners and regulators around the world to rethink the dundamental structure of their utility industries. This is the first authoritative study of these widespread changes and their potential impact on the electricity sector.
Customer Reviews:
Good introduction...weak on some details.......1998-11-12
An excellent introduction to market-based mechanisms for electricity provision and alternative electricity market structures. Discussions on transmission planning and pricing could use more meat and consideration of the many unresolved issues. Basic economic explanations are a bit brief as well.
Book Description
The electricity market has experienced enormous setbacks in delivering on the promise of deregulation. In theory, deregulating the electricity market would increase the efficiency of the industry by producing electricity at lower costs and passing those cost savings on to customers. As Electricity Deregulation shows, successful deregulation is possible, although it is by no means a hands-off process—in fact, it requires a substantial amount of design and regulatory oversight.
This collection brings together leading experts from academia, government, and big business to discuss the lessons learned from experiences such as California's market meltdown as well as the ill-conceived policy choices that contributed to those failures. More importantly, the essays that comprise Electricity Deregulation offer a number of innovative prescriptions for the successful design of deregulated electricity markets. Written with economists and professionals associated with each of the network industries in mind, this comprehensive volume provides a timely and astute deliberation on the many risks and rewards of electricity deregulation.

Book Description
In recent years, videoconferencing technology has improved significantly as equipment prices have dropped. Smart Videoconferencing demonstrates how to integrate this technology into business communications. The authors address the most basic concerns of users: how to handle the equipment, how to reduce distractions, how to avoid mistakes, and how to look and sound your best on camera.
Customer Reviews:
Smart Videoconferenceing: New Habits for Virtual Meetings.......2003-04-11
Smart Videoconferencing is a must read for anyone who is going before a camera. The authors give simple tips which can maximize your presence on camera. It is a quick, simple read. Well worth the money.
Packed with Knowledge!.......2003-02-26
This is a concise, direct, very practical handbook for organizing a videoconference and communicating effectively on camera. The tips on organization, preparation and choosing the right medium for your meeting are especially helpful and new. Many tips, especially about grooming, makeup and clothing, are so simple they border on simplistic, but for those who have no experience in media or performing (such as corporate executives), these clues could make the difference between success and failure. Authors Janelle Barlow, Peta Peter and Lewis Barlow back up their pointers with real-life anecdotes which reinforce their ideas quite convincingly and provide the book its only real entertainment value; otherwise it's relentlessly practical. We from getAbstract found this book useful for anyone who is organizing or participating in a videoconference. When you're on the air, you want to be in the know.
Very good book for end users of videoconferencing.......2002-11-20
I enjoyed reading the book. Even easy to read for me who is no-native speaker of English or intermidiate learner of the language. I did not have to look up dictionary so often.
Anyway,I think that this book will be good especially for those novice end users who have just started using the video technology and who want to use it in more effective and productive ways.
I think that this is a kind of a book that end users desire.@Basically they are not intersted in how technology works behind but more and more they are interested in benefits and effects that they anticipate to get from using the technology. Not intersted in features and capabilities etc.. Some may, though.
However, I would like to point out one thing.
There is a paragraph in page 10 regarding Japanese video market graph. What is written is not correctly translated into English.
The numbers in the year 1998 and 2000 are based on a prediction by unidentified source according to the web page.But numbers in the year 1988,1993 and 1995 are actual numbers.
The graph was a part of a presentation made for doctors in Saitama to understand the status quo of videocommunications in relation to medical activities. But it does not show the source.
The numbers includes all kinds of video equipment from room or board type to set-top to PC based to surveilance. It does not mean one product category.
But it is true that the first video service was launch in 1984 by NTT, but it was actually not as popular as expected. Just a handful of big companies in Japan used the service to slash costs associated with travels, and the service cost per month as running cost was unjustifiably quite high to smaller businesses, so it did not go hit. And after that, audio service introduced also by NTT that offers relatively inexpensive service which could be accepted by smaller businesses.
Media Smarts.......2002-11-09
This is a wonderful book, but I think it's titled wrong. It should be Media Savvy Videoconferencing. I bought the book thinking it would be about videoconferencing exclusively, but actually it's filled with information about how to look good whenever you are in front of the media. This book should be read by all PR people and anyone who has to do television appearances. There really are tricks to the trade. Why do media savvy people generally look good on television? Because they are using the techniques described in this book.
When the Stakes are High ..........2002-10-22
Last month, after our company installed a new videoconferencing system, my boss asked me to assume responsibility for our first trial meeting with a midwestern customer organization. I was very excited about the promise that this new technology could afford our business. But, I must confess, that the actual videoconference event was a big disappointment. Even though the equipment worked as promised, the meeting felt like Ted Mack's "Original Amateur Hour." That's when I began browsing around for a book that might address the weaknesses I perceived in our interaction. And, I discovered that only one book - of the dozens available on videoconferencing - actually dealt with the human communication issues involved.
After my first experience, I can attest that these are, indeed, the most important.
Our next videoconference event is scheduled in a few days - and I think our company is now much better prepared, thanks to the helpful, practical tips in this book, Smart Videoconferencing This book emphasizes the significant differences that exist between a face to face meeting and a videoconference. There is a paradox involved, because the videoconference demands both greater care and professionalism, while, at the same time, there is the necessity for a sense of relaxation and authenticity. I can tell you that our first event lacked both of these qualities - and our company lost some business as a result. Now, I think I we can avoid the mistakes we made last time.
I highly recommend this book for anyone engaged in videoconferencing when the stakes are high.

The Civilized Shopper's Guide to Rome
ASIN: 1566564220 |
Book Description
The cafe is indisputably central to Roman life. Café Life Rome is the first guide book dedicated solely to the cafés and bars of Rome. Instead of relying on city guides with cursory listings, this book, with its rich photography and informed descriptions, steers travelers through Rome's 5,000 bars to the perfect cafe. Café Life Rome focuses on thirty of the best, in four different areas of the city. Some of these establishments are hundreds of years old and some are relatively young, but each has a story to tell. These cafés also offer food and drink at reasonable prices, or a specialty of the house worth a small splurge. Visitors will be able to choose a comfortable bar close to their accommodations, make it a hangout of their own and watch the Romani at close quarters. It may even be a place where Hemingway or Fellini came to unwind, too.
"This book could help a reader easily, and quickly, feel at home in Rome's cafes, not only becoming acquainted with what kind of coffee or gelatin is available, but getting a feel for how the personality and the ambience were created."--Chris Arvidson, Foreword Magazine
"This beautifully illustrated guide is essential for visitors having to choose between the 8,000 caffes--which can mean a café, a bar, or simply a coffee--and why they're so fundamental to the Italian community."--OK! Magazine
Customer Reviews:
Café Life Rome.......2007-07-07
We haven't visited Rome yet to check out the 22 or so cafés reviewed in this book, but it looks to be a great guide to Rome's cafés.
Each review features interviews and stories about the café reviewed, information about the neighborhood, and info on the coffee and food served. As well as cafés, it features five or so of Rome's best gelato spots.
All of which much helps to build a sense of anticipation to actually try these places!
Disappointing travel guide.......2006-06-03
I bought this book as a guide for my week-long stay in Rome, and after a few disappointing caffe's and gelaterias, I left the book in my hotel room. Many of the places featured in this book are EXPENSIVE, but the author gives no indication of price. One example is his Vatican City Self-Serve caffe, where my mom and I played 48 euro for two salads and a plate of pasta! Also, there is no map, so I was cross referencing this book with my other travel books. If you're looking for a food guide to Rome, save your money and look elsewhere.
Excellent guide to the best cafes.......2005-10-25
Use this book to do your own cafe tour in Rome. This is an excellent list of cafes and the photos and detailed descriptions make it a joy to read. Recommended by the Slow Travel website.
It gets them all.......2005-07-12
My favorite place for coffee, with the best latte I have found in Rome is at the Teatro Marcello cafe. This the first book to highlight the cafe, and not just the other more famous places. A wonderful guide to great cafes, with nice pictures to boot.
where's the map.......2002-10-12
I loved this book. The pictures and reviews definitely got me psyched for my upcoming trip to Rome. And, when in Rome, I had the best caffe and granita I could imagine.
But...the book refers to a map, that I couldn't find in my copy. A map would've been very helpful.

Leadership authorities James M. Kouzes and Barry Z. Posner say employees perform best when their contributions are genuinely appreciated. Unfortunately, the two contend, most executives have not mastered the decidedly soft-management skill of "encouragement" that fosters such behavior. In Encouraging the Heart, they examine how this type of compassionate supervision is becoming a critical part of successful management today, and through example and suggestion they describe how readers can establish the process in their own businesses.
This is not a book about glad-handing and backslapping, gold stars, and payoffs. It's about the importance of linking rewards and appreciation to standards of excellence. It's about why encouragement is absolutely essential to sustaining people's commitment to organizations and outcomes. It's about the hard work it takes to get extraordinary things done in organizations, and it's about ways to enhance your own ability in--and comfort with--recognizing and celebrating the achievements of others.
The book's opening section introduces their concept of the caring leader; the second outlines their "seven essential principles" for encouraging workers; the third explains how the process can be personalized and describes 150 additional suggestions for implementing it. --Howard Rothman
Book Description
All too often, simple acts of human kindness are often overlooked and under utilized by people in leadership roles. Advising mutual respect and recognition of accomplishments, Encouraging the Heart shows us how true leaders encourage and motivate those they work with by helping them find their voice and making them feel like heroes. Recognized experts in the field of leadership, authors James Kouzes and Barry Posner show us that, through love, leaders can encourage, and indeed allow those around them to be their very best. Both practical and inspirational, Encouraging the Heart gives readers a thoughtful approach to motivating individuals within an organizational structure.

A Key Relational Leadership Process.......2007-09-25
Continuing their `Leadership is a Relationship' philosophy, best-selling authors, (The Leadership Challenge and Credibility), Kouzes & Posner focus this book on the 5th of their five essential practices for exemplary leadership - Encourage the Heart. After demonstrating that even the best performers are `starved for recognition' and will respond positively to a heart-felt "thank you", the authors provide descriptions and examples of the seven essential components of the Encouraging the Heart practice, devoting a chapter to each of the following:
1. Set Clear Standards
2. Expect the Best
3. Pay Attention
4. Personalize Recognition
5. Tell the Story
6. Celebrate Together
7. Set the Example
But, reading about how others do it is never enough, and the so the last part of the book takes the reader beyond tools and techniques, with a "Finding Your Voice" chapter coming before the listing of "150 Ways to Encourage the Heart" of others.
If you believe that money is the prime motivator of exceptional performance, you may want to spend a few quiet hours with this easy-to-read, how-to manual for getting to the heart of individual performance. This book is recommended for anyone wanting to learn a foundational process for relational leadership. Dennis DeWilde, author of "The Performance Connection"

Leading Through Encouragement: "Thoughtfully" Expanding the Potential of your Team.......2006-11-25
* The famous journalist Walter Lippman once said, "The final test of a leader is that he leaves behind in others the conviction and will to carry on."
* That is the test for all of us, not only those is a managerial position, but all of us. A leader may be the guy in a suit and tie down in the corner office, but a leader can also be the sixty year old woman working as a cashier who knows not to put our bread and canned goods in the same bag.
* Every one of us leads, whether directly or indirectly, in the actions we perform every day. Whether we know it or not, right now, each of us is showing something the right way to be or the wrong way to be.
* James M. Kouzes and Barry Z. Posner, discuss in their bestselling book The Leadership Challenge, the five principles they have found in leaders who have teams that get "extraordinary" things done:
* These leaders:
* Challenge the Process
* Inspire a shared vision
* Enable others to act
* Model the way
* And, Encourage the Heart.
* But what does it mean to "encourage the heart?"
* Encouraging the Heart shows how, with a few main ideas, how each of us - management or not - can take the initiative to bring common courtesy and kindness into the workplace, and how effective that everyday emotional bond between human beings can translate into a successful, more productive, and generally happier workplace.
* And as we all know, the more content the team is, the better that team will be. And a successful team is often attributed to the successful leader of that team. Encouraging the heart forms that connection, and helps boost the overall strength of the team as well as the strength of the leader.
If people are what matter, this is a critical read for leaders.......2006-10-24
No communities are not a collection of assets, financial reports, and marketing, they are made up with people. This may be obvious. On the other hand, a large percentage of managers and leaders act as though people are robots there but to order around and attack if performance does not match expectations. Of course expectations have never been clarified, but that is an other story. If this description of management and leadership offends you, you really should be reading this book. There is a well documented better way to work with, reward, and encourage people. If we all treated people the way that is outlined in this book, our world would be a better place.
This is also a very easy to read book with clear and valuable recommendations. It is worthy of a learning group within your management team. Bring your managers together into circle and explore how to implement this principles. You will be glad you did.
Valuable Insights...Practical Advice.......2002-03-02
Those who have already read Kouzes and Posner's The Leadership Challenge will immediately realize that this volume provides a deeper examination of the concepts introduced in Part Six ("Encouraging the Heart") of the previously published work. After introducing and then discussing five "leadership practices common to successful leaders" and ten "behavioral commitments" among those leaders studied iwhile preparing to write The Leadership Challenge, Kouzes and Posner focus on recognizing contributions (i.e. linking rewards with performance) and celebrating accomplishments (i.e. valuing the victories) in Part Six. In this volume, these two "leadership commitments" receive their full attention. The material is carefully organized within 12 chapters which range from "The Heart of Leadership" to "150 Ways to Encourage the Heart." Why did they write this book? There are four reasons.
Practicality: "We wanted to offer a set of principles, practices, and examples that would provide leaders with a repeatable process -- a set of essential actions --they could apply in their own settings."
Principle: "In this book, we not only demonstrate that encouraging the heart is not soft; we show how powerful a force it is in achieving high standards and stretch goals."
Curiosity: "We've been intrigued for some time by this finding that] "female constituents do not report that their leaders encourage the heart any more than do male constituents, regardless of the gender of their leader] and we wanted to explore the practice in depth to see if we could understand more about these differences."
Finally, "...because we wanted to add our voices to the discussion of soul and spirit in the workplace."
Kouzes and Posner note that the word "encouragement" has its root in the Latin word "cor" which literally means "heart." (So does the word "courage.") To have courage is to have heart. To encourage -- to provide with or give courage -- literally means to give others heart. For me, there are at least three especially important core concepts: First, love what you do. Love those for whom you are responsible. And love them enough to set high standards for them and then give them hope that you and they can meet those standards. Second, don't think of leadership in terms of position, title, power, status, etc. Rather, think of it in terms of initiative. Encourage, recognize and reward initiative whenever and wherever you find it throughout your entire organization. Third and finally, practice what you preach and do that every day. The most effective leaders care....and care deeply. They have credibility because their values and behavior are in unshakable alignment. They have earned others' trust.
Those who share my high regard for this book are urged to check out David Maister's Practice What You Preach, Tim Sanders' Love Is the Killer App, David Whyte's The Heart Aroused, and Larry Davis' Pioneering Organizations.

Not For Professionals.......2004-06-16
I made a mistake in purchasing this book. It was not written for me and I've returned it.
However, as there was no review available at the time of my purchase, I am writing this to help the 'next person in line'.
This book may be helpful for someone preparing to begin their first 'real' job, but it is not directed to transitional job seekers, or for management or executive levels. Those folks may need "Right From the Start" by Dan Ciampa instead.
Basically, if you've successfully held a position for a number of years, you probably won't need to buy this book for your next job.

Valuable Insights Into Public Sector Jobs.......1998-09-20
You will not become rich, but may enrich your worklife with a Public Sector postion. The authors objectively describe the percieved strengths and weaknesses of public sector employment, both at the federal and local level. The authors tend to slant their analysis heavily toward positions in the U.S. Federal Government, rather than focus on local government opportunities. The authors generally point out that bigger is better, even in government employment. The highest paying positions with job advancement potential will be found in the U.S. Federal Government, State, and larger local governments. The book offers general advice and information how to apply for government positions, but is not the primary focus of this book. The authors also suggest that individuals should not necessarily consider Government work as a life long career, unless one is willing to accept lower pay at higher level positions. Thus, a competitive salary at higher levels within government is less likely; one may plateau earlier in government in terms of salary than in the private sector. A well balanced book worth reading for anyone interested in this Government work.

Classic Book on Biblical Finances.......2004-01-31
Original Date of Review - January 30, 2004
This is a classic book on biblical finances that gives an comprehensive reading of most issues that Christian men and women need to address in areas of financial stewardship. I can see how other Christian books along the same vein would be influenced by Ron Blue and Larry Burkett's books in general if they were written in the early to mid 90s. In this book, the only areas of caution are the stereotypes that Ron uses to describe men and women's differences. That could merit a separate book.
I've taught out of this book in Sunday school for a year already with a few more months to go before we're finished. The book is interesting to talk about, but there is little motivation for anyone to practice the exercises in this book unless one is actively trying to get out of debt. But that is a problem with Christian books in general.
On a personal note, I find that I am not as fearful about discussing and analyzing financial topics as I used to be. I can also understand how reaching for life's goals is refreshingly sobering when looking at life in financial terms. That is what Ron does brilliantly. This is not a book with Christian fluff between the covers. There is good meat here to grow on.
I recommend the book highly particularly for a motivated reading group.
Addendum:
It turned out that my Sunday School class and I spent two years in this book pretty much to the day. We had a lot to talk about and after all was said and done (reading the book from cover to cover and checking out all of the scripture references), it didn't seem like two years had passed by. It was a real pleasure teaching out of this book. Thank you very much, Mr. Blue.
