      Book Description

Since its publication in 1979, Critics of Henry George has achieved an international reputation as by far the most comprehensive review and analysis of the objections leveled against Henry George's American classic, Progress and Poverty. George's 19th century classic argument for land reform produced an army of critics including Alfred Marshall, J. B. Clark, F. A. Walker and in the 20th century, Edwin Cannan, Murray Rothbard and Mark Blaug. In recent years Georgist insights have been gaining ground in economics on a variety of fronts especially in the areas of the economics of location and public finance. Now, more than a century after George and 25 years after the first edition of the Critics of Henry George, the Critics has been expanded, revised and enlarged by Dr. Robert Andelson. The Andelson revision will include a revised last chapter evaluating Georgism as it was interpreted by its critics.

As a beginning mediator, I found this book very detailed and theoretical. I am sure that I will return to it again and again as I gain experience. I found "Basic Skills for the New Mediator (2d edition)" by Allan H. Goodman to provide a quicker and more practical overview. When used together, I believe both books are a good basis for the practicing mediator.

            Book Description

"See America First is the first comprehensive assessment of tourism and the formation of a twentieth-century American identity. The voyage of discovery is both individual and national, cultural and personal. . . . Shaffer shows how local and regional businesses collaborated to create a national message that a willing nation embraced." -Hal Rothman, University of Nevada-Las Vegas

In See America First, Marguerite Shaffer chronicles the birth of modern American tourism between 1880 and 1940, linking tourism to the simultaneous growth of national transportation systems, print media, a national market, and a middle class with money and time to spend on leisure. Focusing on the See America First slogan and idea employed at different times by railroads, guidebook publishers, Western boosters, and Good Roads advocates, she describes both the modern marketing strategies used to promote tourism and the messages of patriotism and loyalty embedded in the tourist experience. She shows how tourists as consumers participated in the search for a national identity that could assuage their anxieties about American society and culture.

Generously illustrated with images from advertisements, guidebooks, and travelogues, See America First demonstrates that the promotion of tourist landscapes and the consumption of tourist experiences were central to the development of an American identity

            5 out of 5 stars A must-read for the 'academic-traveler'!.......2002-01-04

I speak as both an academic and general reader when I say that Marguerite S. Shaffer's See America First: Tourism and National Identity, 1880-1940, is a "must-read" for anyone interested in travel, tourism, history, nature, marketing, and American culture in general. In December, I received Shaffer's book as a gift right before I went home for winter break - a time when most college students like myself would prefer not to even look at anything that resembles a textbook. However, I found that once embarking on the engaging text, I was hard-pressed to stop!

See America First opens with a passage straight out of a sentimental movie: it is the spring of 1892, and Methodist minister Stephen Merritt is leaving his home in New York City to venture across the country. He writes of his anticipation that he will "see the land (he) fondly call(s) (his) own" (1) on the tour to Alaska and California. Each chapter is introduced in an equally engaging manner, and sheds light on general themes. Shaffer's work is well-organized as it chronicles western tourism after the Civil War - as the nation tried to bind itself together after a divisive four-year struggle at the same time that the seemingly boundless west was rapidly finishing its settlement. As a culture, the nation wanted to create for itself a type of heritage that older European countries could proclaim - but remain unique in its identity. By connecting the emerging consumer culture in the United States with the marketing "national tourism," Shaffer presents a substantiated argument that the shared national identity of America and its values were actually inspired by popular Western mythology. The actual See America First movement thus serves as the bulk of her exhaustively researched work. We learn of the developments in transportation, technology, and communication that the government endorsed in an effort to reach its goal. However, Shaffer also affirms that this was not a "one-sided" lecture by commercialism - it was the foundation for a larger dialogue of values and ideals.

As a history and American studies major, I can't help but appreciate the fact that I now know how these "attractions" got their birth - and how the railroad, hotels, and leisure culture worked together to symbolize the ideal America. On an academic note, Shaffer's bibliography is very extensive - which is useful to anyone who would like to independently follow up on a particular aspect of her original research. Of course, there are also numerous visual features including postcards, photos, and advertisements ("The Call of the Mountains!...Vacations in Glacier National Park" proclaimed one that most readily comes to my mind), all of which served as a way for me to connect with those who enjoyed the national parks and west long before I did. Personally, that is the best part of See America First: it conjured up fond memories of my own trips out west with my family. Even though I was a youth, I remember a powerful sense of beauty, purity, and idealism as we spent time at Glacier, Yellowstone, and other National Parks.

On first reading, I flew through See America First too quickly, so I am now re-reading it just for enjoyment and additional nostalgia - and I am also making plans with my family to take another two-week tour this summer. I look forward to future books by Shaffer!

            5 out of 5 stars Mobile Citizenship.......2001-12-06

Gasoline prices falling. The automobile industry urging us to "Keep America Rolling." Chambers of Commerce and tourist bureaus asking us to do our patriotic duty: travel. The national parks opening their gates for free, offering a glimpse of the sublime in service of communal "healing." The aftermath of September 11? Yes, but as Marguerite S. Shaffer shows us in See America First: Tourism and National Identity, 1880-1940 (Washington, DC: Smithsonian, 2001), we've been down this road before.

Shaffer chronicles the rise of what she calls "national tourism" at the turn of the 20th century, in which touring was characterized as not only a ritual of American citizenship but also a form of "virtuous consumption" (39), the perfect melding of patriotism and commercial progress. In the wake of the Civil War, travel was promoted as a means of witnessing the unfolding of a flourishing, united nation: by "consuming" the national narrative through historical landmarks and the spectacle of nature, tourists were able to participate in a larger dialogue about personal and public memory (e.g., through scrapbooks and journals), individual and national identity. Of course, these patriotic questers required an America worthy of their efforts. Enter the See America First movement, which Shaffer describes as a "Western booster campaign" whose purpose was to establish the West as the geographical, commercial, and political equal of the Northeastern United States while simultaneously promoting the "ideal" West as the "true" America. See America First exploited the existing ideological infrastructure of Manifest Destiny to create a "canon" of American tourist attractions that embodied a distinct national mythology based on such nostalgic images as untamed nature, noble savages, and small-town life. Sustaining this mythology, however, required a massive physical infrastructure of roads, hotels, and tourist attractions--all heavily subsidized by boosters and government officials. Thus the marketing of the American West reified a cultural meaning of tourism that depended as much on an expansive rhetoric of commercialism as an expansive body of land.

Like all good histories, See America First not only reveals a vivid past but brings its themes to bear on our own urgent and fraught present. Two examples are particularly worthy of mention. First, Shaffer observes that in the unprecedented prosperity of the post-World War II era, tourism became less a patriotic rite of passage than "the ultimate quest for self-indulgent individual pleasure and hedonistic personal freedom in a culture of mass consumption that revolved around spectacle, fantasy, and desire" (320). These post-September 11 days represent the inverse of that situation: a lengthy period of economic expansion has come to an abrupt and painful end, and travel is being promoted as an antidote to the fear and unease caused by the terrorist attacks and a patriotic defense of "our way of life." Second, this re-emergence of national tourism as a form of virtuous consumption offers us a cautionary tale. For as Shaffer argues, "mobile citizenship . . . redefined political rights in consumer terms, celebrating seeing over speaking, purchasing over voting, and traveling over participating" (6). Given the recent bailout of the travel and tourism industry, the voluntary forfeiture of civil liberties in the name of the war on terrorism, and the daily exhortations to keep the world free for democracy by spending, spending, spending . . . this argument is as timely as it is original.

See America First is an academic book, but general readers should not be deterred. Meticulously researched, engagingly written, and generously illustrated with old photographs, postcards, and travel brochures, it should satisfy anyone with an interest in the period, the industries, or the themes at the heart of Shaffer's study, from tourists to travel literature aficionados, from collectors of tourist memorabilia to historians of the environment and consumer culture.

4 out of 5 stars The business of incorporating..........2004-09-07

Anyone trying to incorporate their business knows it's a tedious process with lots of research necessary. INCORPORATE NOW! has taken everything one needs to know and rolled it into one book detailing how to go about things with examples to help in the process. Author Daniel Sitarz includes brief summaries of the various types of corporations, legal forms, checklists, and other tools to quickly assess what's involved with incorporation.

A plus to the book is that in addition to all of the above items, it includes a CD-ROM of the actual forms that you can print off or fill in on the screen. Additionally, the author has included information for incorporating in the continental United States with fees associated with each state, mailing addresses, and a wealth of information specific to that state.

While I did find this book informational and a great tool, I've already done a lot of research on the various types of incorporations so I had some understanding of the terms. Someone brand new to the language of incorporation would probably need something a bit more detailed that goes more in depth and offers pros and cons to each option. That person could then fully utilize this wonderful resource for the small business entrepreneur.

3 out of 5 stars Simple and informative but the CD templates DO NOT MATCH.......2004-08-18

This is a good simple book on incorporation in any of the 50 states. It includes plain English descriptions of the requirements and responsibilities of corporations. However, the Adobe PDF forms on the CD in some cases do not match the content of the book.

5 out of 5 stars Everything you need no matter what your state.......2004-06-24

If you are considering trying to incorporate your business without a lawyer, "Incorporate Now!" provides all the forms you will need to get the job done. Incorporation instructions include details such as minimum shareholders, S-Corporations election (and why you might want to do elect it), minimum capitalization requirements, tax effects, and just about everything else you might need to know. It doesn't matter what state you live in or what state you want to incorporate in, information is provided for every state.
Forms to be used for standard business transactions are also included in the book. For example, there are forms for board meetings, shareholder meetings, authorizing contracts, authorizing the sale of real estate, authorizing the borrowing of money, appointing a lawyer, appointing an accountant, authorizing stock transfers, and pretty much every other situation where you might need a form you will find the fill-in-the-blank document here.

In addition to the book, all the forms are also included on the CDROM so you can print them out easily or fill them in right on your computer. Every form that you can think of for just about any situation is included in this book and on the CDROM. It is easily the most extensive set of forms of any similar book I have seen. Author Daniel Sitarz also provides checklists, worksheets, and information for each item so you will understand their purpose and be able to fill them out intelligently.

This book is an excellent resource if you have already made the decision to incorporate, however it is not very useful in helping you make that decision. It does provide some background and comparison of different forms of business but it is somewhat cursory and leaves out many important details. (For example, if an S-Corporation pays for life insurance or health insurance for an officer it does not get to deduct those costs from their tax return. But if a C-Corporation pays those expenses it does get to deduct them from its tax return.) Then again, it makes no claim that it provides a full analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of a corporation. In fact the author states "The decision of which business entity to choose depends upon many factors and should be carefully studied. If the choice is to operate a business as a corporation or S-corporation, this book will provide an array of easy-to-use legal forms which will, in most cases, allow the business owner to start and operate the corporation with minimal difficulty while meeting all of the legal paperwork requirements." Since such an analysis is intentionally not a part of the book it should not be considered a shortcoming. I only mention it here to make the potential purchaser aware that it is not discussed here and such advice should be sought elsewhere. The author's point is well made; if the decision to incorporate has already been made then this book provides everything you need to make that happen.

While this book is appropriate for anyone seeking a basic incorporation for their business it is not appropriate for a non-profit corporation. If you are a non-profit seeking to incorporate there are different requirements for some of the items (like a mandatory clause that upon dissolution all assets will be distributed only to other non-profit corporations in most states). Except for this specialized situation of a non-profit corporation "Incorporate Now!" is thorough, explains things well, and is a highly recommended purchase for anyone seeking to incorporate.

                    Book Description

Practical tools and expert advice for professional event planners

Before planning an event, there is much that must be done behind the scenes to make the event successful. Before any thought is even given to timing or location of the event, before the menus are selected and the decor designed, there are proposals to be written, fees and contracts to be negotiated, and safety issues to be considered. This book takes you behind the scenes of event planning and explains every aspect of organizing and strategic planning. This book will be of value to both the professional event planner and to clients who are dealing with planners.

Its comprehensive coverage includes: how to prepare winning proposals, and how to understand them if you are the client; how to determine management fees; negotiating contracts; safety issues; designing events in multicultural settings; and new technology that makes operations more efficient (such as online registration and response management, database project management tools). The book also includes practical tools such as sample letters of agreement, sample layouts for client proposals, forms, and checklists. Professional event planner Judy Allen offers first-time or professional event planners all the top-class advice they need to make their special events come off without a hitch.

Practical for special events, but does not distingish between event planning like weddings and conventions. Still pretty good.

Planning a corporate party or special event? Don't lift a finger until you've read The Business of Event Planning. In this highly practical book, author Judy Allen covers every aspect of the process in exhaustive detail. Allen, an author, writer and experienced event planner, contends that events are more than just feel-good activities. Events, she says, must be staged as strategic tools with return-on-investment potential. If you want to know how, she covers all the basics. Even though the book is geared toward large events, the principles can be applied to functions of any size. Allen includes details of proposal writing, itineraries, contract negotiations, fee setting, high tech applications and security concerns in a post-September-11 world. We recommend this logistical guide to corporate staffers or event planners who want to master the fine details.

With a strong endorsement from Susan Fenner Ph.D, Manager, Education and Professional Development, International Association of Administrative Professionals, Allen strives to teach the how-tos of planning special events. This incredibly detailed profession has been known to send any number of otherwise level-headed individuals screaming and dashing for the exits.

Yet, with Allen's assistance and Levine's Guerrilla PR: Wired, which explains the promotions side of events, both a newcomer and an experienced professional can benefit from this book.

Well-written, this book may save many a person from high blood pressure.

This book gives a step-by-step plan on how to plan special events. It is a great reference for anyone who plans a career in this filed. I would also recommend Guerilla PR Wired by Michael Levine along with this book. These two cover the basis for PR and events planning.

                          Book Description

Women learn the lesson early: Coveting money is greedy. Hustling for it is unladylike. Talking about it is crass. And so they develop a quiet contract: Ill do what it takes to get money, but I dont want to have to think about it. Maybe an extravagant purchase gets chalked up as a necessity. A few twenties disappear from the husbands wallet while hes in the shower. A raise goes unrequested. A looming debt gets pushed aside, just for the moment...

liz perle's memoir is a memoir many women could have written, in that a lot of us have that story. i appreciated her willingness to take money, long a dirty and avoided topic, out of the shadows where it usually hides and actually take a serious look about what is happening. despite advances in hiring and women's increased opportunity in the work world, it is clear that in many cases we are not fighting for the same equality in money management. and shame on us for not paying attention. while i haven't been through a faild marriage and lived to tell as perle has, her warnings about what can result from negligence or the "handing over" of your financial control to anyone else and remaining in ignorance are scary, and should be required reading for all women who claim they can't be bothered to balance checkbooks.

                          3 out of 5 stars I couldn't relate.......2007-04-10

The author constantly talks about how she and all her friends were raised to think that they would grow up to be taken care of by a man. It's very helpful to understand where the author is coming from, but my peers and I simply don't share this expectation, which made the book a little less relevant for me. I was hoping for a book that would help me understand why I handle money the way I do, and this book is, as the title states, a memoir more than anything else. I also thought that the writing could have been a little tighter; it seemed like the author kept repeating the same points over and over.

3 out of 5 stars Umm, what decade is it again?.......2007-02-08

Please give me a break with this Knight in Shining Armor crap. I don't care or think about how much money a man makes when I decide to date him. I guess there are still gold-digging women out there who think it's a man's job to "provide for them", but I can provide for myself, thanks. I'm getting married in 8 months, to a man who makes less money than I do. It doesn't make a difference to either of us, I just pay a larger portion of the bills.

I was hoping to read something a little more up to date. The only reason I gave it 3 stars is because it is written well and seems to be well researched.

I am a Financial Planner (CFP) and can recommend this book to everyone. The modern women should use this as guide line to life.

Often we believe we must keep on waiting until we accumulate a large amount of coin before we can invest. However, Chuck dispells that notion and shows you can start with as little as $5 a day (or 150 dollars a month) and he emphasizes small consistent starts. Remember most successful people had to start somewhere, most people didn't inherit their wealth, you must earn it; Chuck shows you the tools. I suggest you read the book more than once, have work book and plan things. Perhaps, you should open a separate bank account so you can put the 150 per month that won't be touched, but make sure you have an emergency fund somewhere so you won't be tempted to dip into that investment fund.

I have read Financial Freedom and the Wealthy Barber in the last few weeks. Financial Freedom was great, straightforward, and focussed. Meant for the small investor, he assumes you are starting with no savings or knowledge of investing. The message is: for $5 a day and an hour per month you can retire very well.

I was excited about saving when I finished this book. He explains why mutual funds are the vehicles of choice, gives detailed information on which funds to investigate further, including telephone numbers and addresses for companies in both the US and Canada.

He also offers a few strategies to use with mutual funds to maximize returns in up and down markets. It was so good I have convinced my book club to read it for our next book.

By the way, I am saving $5 a day. You will too.
