Down to Earth: Applying Business Principles to Environmental Management
Forest L. Reinhardt Manufacturer: Harvard Business School Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 1578511925 |
Book Description
Anxiety about the environment is on the rise for today's businesses. Firms large and small are feeling increased pressure from government regulations, environmental organizations, and community groups to ensure that business practices respect our natural resources. According to Forest Reinhardt, executives should stop delegating these issues to scientific or social experts, and instead seize the opportunity to use environmental strategies as part of their business planning-in ways that can increase profits for the bottom line. In Down to Earth, Reinhardt helps managers find ways to accommodate demands for environmental performance and deliver superior returns to their shareholders.According to Reinhardt, responsible and realistic solutions to environmental problems are surprisingly accessible. Down to Earth explains how executives can take familiar business principles of strategy, finance, and marketing and use them to improve their management of environmental problems. Colorful examples from businesses as diverse as Patagonia, Xerox, and Monsanto show how leading companies use this commonsense approach to turn environmental concerns into powerful competitive advantages.
The first book to offer a practical, reality-based view of the relationship between the environment and business practice, Down to Earth will help executives take advantage of the valuable opportunities for linking their environmental strategies with shareholder value.

Applying Economics to the Environment
Clifford S. Russell Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items: ASIN: 019512684X |
Book Description
Applying Economics to the Environment is distinguished from other books on environmental economics by its breadth of coverage and its in-depth discussions of several key topics. The book's broad scope includes a chapter on how models of the natural world interact with economic models in ways that are central to the conclusions economists reach. It devotes a chapter to contingent valuation, currently the hottest topic in the field. It also contains a chapter on monitoring and enforcement, a topic often completely ignored but central to considerations of instrument choice. In addition, the final four chapters deal with the special problems of developing countries and the environment, both their own and our shared global systems. In terms of depth, the book's discussion of contingent valuation and related "direct" damage or benefit estimation techniques is unmatched outside the specialist literature. Its coverage of the choices available among policy instruments goes far beyond the usual simple discussions contrasting what is misleadingly known as "command control" with so-called economic or market-based instruments. This coverage reveals the complexity of the choice and the range of alternatives available. It also presents several of the newer ideas, in particular the use of publicly available information as a tool of environmental policy. Applying Economics to the Environment is intended to serve a dual market of upper-level college course programs in environmental economics as well as engineering and public policy courses that focus on the environment. The book can also provide an enlightening perspective for practicing professionals. Because the text includes a relatively sophisticated presentation of economic analysis, the author includes a full-chapter review of relevant microeconomic concepts. Some other features that further distinguish this book from currently available titles on the subject are: an introduction to the history of environmental policy and legislation; a comparison of approaches to the uncertain choice between development and preservation; and an example of regional cost benefit analysis.

Cost-Benefit Analysis of Environmental Goods by Applying Contingent Valuation Method: Some Japanese Case Studies
Uddin Sarwar Ahmed , and Keinosuke Gotoh Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 4431289496 |
Book Description
Contingent valuation is one of the means of incorporating socio-environmental considerations in cost–benefit analysis. The authors of this book have examined environmental valuation methods through the lens of cost–benefit analysis focused on three case studies in Japan: public parks, a bay wetland, and a recreational theme park. With implications for the world at large, the findings presented here serve as a valuable source of information on Japanese behavior regarding the valuation of environmental goods. New, alternative approaches and guidelines for cost–benefit analysis in the public and private spheres also are discussed. This volume makes an important addition to the library of all researchers and other scientists in the fields of environmental science and environmental economics.

Rumors and Rumor Control: A Manager's Guide to Understanding and Combatting Rumors (Lea's Communication Series)
Allan J. Kimmel Manufacturer: Lawrence Erlbaum ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0805838767 |
Book Description
This book offers a thorough examination of rumors and proposes strategies for organizations to use in combatting rumors that occur both internally and externally. Author Allan J. Kimmel explores the rumor phenomenon and distinguishes it as a distinct form of communication. He looks at psychological and social processes underlying rumor transmission to understand the circumstances under which people invent and circulate rumors. In addition, he examines how rumors are spread--both interpersonally and through mediated processes--and offers strategies for organizations to respond to rumors when they surface and methods for preventing their occurrence. Numerous examples are provided of actual rumor cases for which managers either successfully or unsuccessfully coped, including such companies as Procter & Gamble, McDonald's, Snapple, Pepsi-Cola, and Gerber.
Intended to serve as a comprehensive compendium of strategies, this book was written with two objectives in mind. The first is to shed light on the often perplexing phenomenon of rumor by integrating disparate approaches from the behavioral sciences, marketing, and communication fields. The second is to offer a blueprint for going about the formidable tasks of attempting to prevent and neutralize rumors in business contexts. With these dual goals in mind--one theoretical, the other applied--this book will be of equal interest to both academics and managers in a wide range of professional contexts. In addition, it will guide organizational and marketing managers in their efforts to combat the potentially destructive consequences of rumors.

Generally useful for a subset of events.......2001-12-17
In contrast, this book is a lot less useful if you're interested in developing your own public events (e.g. concerts, sporting events). There is minimal or no discussion of essential issues like sponsorship, ticket pricing or recruiting/managing volunteers. The discussion of marketing is limited to attracting clients and does not touch on recruiting an audience. There is, however, considerable overlap in the business issues. Since I haven't found a good coverage of that area elsewhere, I'd still recommend this book for you.

Practical nine-step.......2003-09-12
Stedman Graham successfully put abstract ideas (how to succeed) into concrete instructions (the 9-step) with examples. It lets us more easily to understand what to do and how to do in order to be a successful person. Also, those nine steps are really practical in the reality and suitable for everyone who want to be outstanding.
In this book, Stedman Graham likes encouraging us to ask ourselves questions. It is good because it helps us to make sure that we are in the right track and really moving forward to success. Besides, although Stedman Graham is an American and most examples are happened in America, his concepts are also applicable in Asian countries, such as china.
To sum up, I think it is worthwhile to spend some time to read this book and find out our own objective in life and then plan to achieve it.
