Book Description
Anxiety about the environment is on the rise for today's businesses. Firms large and small are feeling increased pressure from government regulations, environmental organizations, and community groups to ensure that business practices respect our natural resources. According to Forest Reinhardt, executives should stop delegating these issues to scientific or social experts, and instead seize the opportunity to use environmental strategies as part of their business planning-in ways that can increase profits for the bottom line. In
Down to Earth, Reinhardt helps managers find ways to accommodate demands for environmental performance and deliver superior returns to their shareholders.
According to Reinhardt, responsible and realistic solutions to environmental problems are surprisingly accessible.
Down to Earth explains how executives can take familiar business principles of strategy, finance, and marketing and use them to improve their management of environmental problems. Colorful examples from businesses as diverse as Patagonia, Xerox, and Monsanto show how leading companies use this commonsense approach to turn environmental concerns into powerful competitive advantages.
The first book to offer a practical, reality-based view of the relationship between the environment and business practice,
Down to Earth will help executives take advantage of the valuable opportunities for linking their environmental strategies with shareholder value.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing.......2005-02-23
I found this book extremely disappointing. The author takes a narrow view of how an individual firm can improve its competitive position by 'playing the environmental card'. Although he cites von Weisäcker et al: Factor Four, he does not seem to be aware of the literature that takes a much more systemic view of how to reconcile ecological sustainability, economic efficiency and commercial success. The book is perhaps useful in that it vividly demonstrates the limitations of a perspective that is centered on the individual corporation and its immediate competitive advantage with a rather blinkered view both of the scope for innovation and the wider macroeconomic framework within which business operates.

Book Description
Applying Economics to the Environment is distinguished from other books on environmental economics by its breadth of coverage and its in-depth discussions of several key topics. The book's broad scope includes a chapter on how models of the natural world interact with economic models in ways that are central to the conclusions economists reach. It devotes a chapter to contingent valuation, currently the hottest topic in the field. It also contains a chapter on monitoring and enforcement, a topic often completely ignored but central to considerations of instrument choice. In addition, the final four chapters deal with the special problems of developing countries and the environment, both their own and our shared global systems. In terms of depth, the book's discussion of contingent valuation and related "direct" damage or benefit estimation techniques is unmatched outside the specialist literature. Its coverage of the choices available among policy instruments goes far beyond the usual simple discussions contrasting what is misleadingly known as "command control" with so-called economic or market-based instruments. This coverage reveals the complexity of the choice and the range of alternatives available. It also presents several of the newer ideas, in particular the use of publicly available information as a tool of environmental policy. Applying Economics to the Environment is intended to serve a dual market of upper-level college course programs in environmental economics as well as engineering and public policy courses that focus on the environment. The book can also provide an enlightening perspective for practicing professionals. Because the text includes a relatively sophisticated presentation of economic analysis, the author includes a full-chapter review of relevant microeconomic concepts. Some other features that further distinguish this book from currently available titles on the subject are: an introduction to the history of environmental policy and legislation; a comparison of approaches to the uncertain choice between development and preservation; and an example of regional cost benefit analysis.

Book Description
Contingent valuation is one of the means of incorporating socio-environmental considerations in cost–benefit analysis. The authors of this book have examined environmental valuation methods through the lens of cost–benefit analysis focused on three case studies in Japan: public parks, a bay wetland, and a recreational theme park. With implications for the world at large, the findings presented here serve as a valuable source of information on Japanese behavior regarding the valuation of environmental goods. New, alternative approaches and guidelines for cost–benefit analysis in the public and private spheres also are discussed. This volume makes an important addition to the library of all researchers and other scientists in the fields of environmental science and environmental economics.

Book Description
This book offers a thorough examination of rumors and proposes strategies for organizations to use in combatting rumors that occur both internally and externally. Author Allan J. Kimmel explores the rumor phenomenon and distinguishes it as a distinct form of communication. He looks at psychological and social processes underlying rumor transmission to understand the circumstances under which people invent and circulate rumors. In addition, he examines how rumors are spread--both interpersonally and through mediated processes--and offers strategies for organizations to respond to rumors when they surface and methods for preventing their occurrence. Numerous examples are provided of actual rumor cases for which managers either successfully or unsuccessfully coped, including such companies as Procter & Gamble, McDonald's, Snapple, Pepsi-Cola, and Gerber.
Intended to serve as a comprehensive compendium of strategies, this book was written with two objectives in mind. The first is to shed light on the often perplexing phenomenon of rumor by integrating disparate approaches from the behavioral sciences, marketing, and communication fields. The second is to offer a blueprint for going about the formidable tasks of attempting to prevent and neutralize rumors in business contexts. With these dual goals in mind--one theoretical, the other applied--this book will be of equal interest to both academics and managers in a wide range of professional contexts. In addition, it will guide organizational and marketing managers in their efforts to combat the potentially destructive consequences of rumors.

Customer Reviews:
Generally useful for a subset of events.......2001-12-17
If you're considering a career in client-driven events (e.g. the Feldstein wedding) or an event support business (e.g. lighting design), this book will provide a useful overview of basic business issues. Most of these issues would require additional reading and the authors provide a good list of references. The coverage is a little uneven, with some topics (e.g. focus groups) discussed in great depth and others (e.g. risk managment) glossed over. There is also some redundancy (e.g. research techniques are discussed in some depth in two different chapters). But you'll also find lots of good advice on sound business practices.
In contrast, this book is a lot less useful if you're interested in developing your own public events (e.g. concerts, sporting events). There is minimal or no discussion of essential issues like sponsorship, ticket pricing or recruiting/managing volunteers. The discussion of marketing is limited to attracting clients and does not touch on recruiting an audience. There is, however, considerable overlap in the business issues. Since I haven't found a good coverage of that area elsewhere, I'd still recommend this book for you.
Too much for a beginner.......2001-08-11
This book is very technical and goes into a great depth of the "business" end of running your own company. It is not a good book for someone who's just beginning and just wants basic information about the event planning business in general. For my needs Affairs of the Heart by Nancy Gluck was a much more insightful book.
Dollars and Events.......2001-06-24
This is a good basic text for starting an event planning business. It includes step-by-step instructions for how to get started, manage the finacial end and maintain your edge in the business. There are lots of sample forms for everything from assessing your suitablility for this business to a sample contract. Throughout the book are anecdotes about people who succeeded at the particular element being discussed.
The book is well written and easy to understand. If gives a good idea of what to expect and what is expected. If you are considering a carreer in event planning, this is a good place to start.
Very good advice.......2000-10-13
This book was not as I had expected, however once I got into it I realized that its content was very valuable. The authors offer up advice that no one would normally tell you and that you would have to find out on your own as a result of poor planning. Some of the material is technical but important to have a successful event planning business. Event planning is much more than picking floral arrangements and reviewing colors of swatches for table linens. This book allows you to taste the true business aspect of the world of event planning. A bargain at its price as it is less expensive than making future business mistakes!

Fit for its era........2007-05-20
An inspirational as well as an instructional book. This book is a good read for all who seek or need an inspirational push. You don't have to suffer from low self-esteem and lack of motivation to read "You Can Make It Happen". It is an easy to read and down to earth book. I have recommended this book to one of my family members.
A great book.......2004-08-21
I saw this book in a store for about $2.50 and thought to myself what could it hurt to purchase "You can make it happen". Well purchasing Mr. Graham's book turned me around to the point that I see my vision for the future and what it has to offer me. I started by purchasing a day planner and already positive results have come into my life along with some positive thinking people. There are still many areas in my life that need to grow and improve, but we have to start somewhere. I would like to thank Mr. Graham for giving me the blueprint to success.
Average, at best.......2004-03-16
Stedman's approach to motivating his readers is one all to common. I found this book only to be full of cliches - pointing out the obvious and reinforcing it like a nagging schoolteacher.
The bottom line is that this book lacks creativity; it is completely unoriginal and provides no means of inspiration to those whom read it.
You Can Make it Happens Rocks!.......2003-11-05
I love Stedman's proactive philosophy about life and great success examples (the Dr J story is awesome). He reinforces the importance of taking action and having a plan to get what you want. It is the same theme in my dating book, SMART Man Hunting: How to Get Out There, Get Dates and Get Mr. Right! - i.e. if you want to find the right mate, you need a dating plan and focus. You Can Make it Happen rocks! I highly recommend this book!
Practical nine-step.......2003-09-12
This book is very valuable and can be useful guideline to you if you still cannot find out your right direction in life. Stedman Graham??s nine-step could probably help you to find out because those nine steps are clear and easy to follow.
Stedman Graham successfully put abstract ideas (how to succeed) into concrete instructions (the 9-step) with examples. It lets us more easily to understand what to do and how to do in order to be a successful person. Also, those nine steps are really practical in the reality and suitable for everyone who want to be outstanding.
In this book, Stedman Graham likes encouraging us to ask ourselves questions. It is good because it helps us to make sure that we are in the right track and really moving forward to success. Besides, although Stedman Graham is an American and most examples are happened in America, his concepts are also applicable in Asian countries, such as china.
To sum up, I think it is worthwhile to spend some time to read this book and find out our own objective in life and then plan to achieve it.

Common Lies.......2007-10-15
This book is supposed to be about integrity, values and honesty. I say "supposed to be" because after reading the book you'll find that there is very little authentic writing from the author. Most of it is stories and information gathered from other sources. Anyone can pay a ghost-writer and then take credit for the work, but how authentic is that? If you're looking for a bunch of random quotes from people other than the author - this book is for you. If you're looking for advice from someone who is honest and truly leads a life with integrity - you'll be highly disappointed. I was!
Good Editoral Poor Production.......2006-10-08
I found a copy of the original 1999 edition at a local library and liked it so much I came to Amazon to get my own copy. Apparently the publisher felt the title had reached a peak and Mr Feltenstein has "revised and updated" the content in a self published format to keep the message alive. That's fine. Problem is he did it on the cheap. The wrong printer and binder running small press runs gives a overpriced and poorly produced product. Upon receipt of a "new" copy upon receipt and 10 minutes into reading the book content fell apart from cheap production and I've sadly now just throw it away.
If the author gets picked up by a legit publisher who can put production value with his message buy a copy then. But unless you're in the mood to read and squirt elmer's glue you'll be disappointed. I learned a valuaable lesson. Authors aren't publishers and some just can't stand to think their work will be out of print. Integrity would have caused him to replace and call back poor production. This lowering of standards sadly takes a lot out of his message and my high opinion has been lower to one of "hypocrite."
Incredible Book filled with great knowledge.......2001-09-30
I got this book for myself, but found myself sharing this with my teenage daughter and thought that the messages were truly inspiring for both of us.
One section that I especially liked and shared with my teenager repeatedly was about self love. I have not read many books on this subject but found it was written very well and that you have to love yourself in order to love and help others that you will be helping in the future.
This really is a must read for every business owner!.......1999-09-30
I got alot from this book. It is a joy to read. Tom has really nailed it on this one. It will be shared with my entire family.
Another winner by Tom Feltenstein!.......1999-08-20
Feltenstein was born to share his very human experiences, through literature! I treasure every paragraph. My frustration is wanting to re-read the last while bursting to drink in the next!
