4 out of 5 stars The struggle for nature and community.......2005-05-24

"Ecofeminism & GLobalization" by Heather Eaton and Lois Ann Lorentzen (editors) is a diverse collection of essays by ecofeminist scholars and activists on the movement's ongoing struggle with globalization. The multiple perspectives help readers understand the depth and sophistication of ecofeminist theory while learning how positive change can occur in the real world. The book should serve as an excellent resource and provide inspiration for students, activists and general interest readers.

The first section discusses globalization, gender and the environment. Mary Mellor explains that men and women typically experience differential relationships with the environment, where women tend to be most disadvantaged by environmental destruction. Heather Eaton stresses the strategic importance of challenging the capitalist system for the ecofeminist movement to remain relevant.

The second section presents case studies from around the world. In Kenya, Celia Nyamweru shows that the preservation of the sacred Kaya forests is largely men's (not women's) work, suggesting that gender roles are culturally and not biologically determined. Lois Ann Lorentzen perceives the struggle for nature and community in Chiapas, Mexico as an event that inherently concerns ecofeminists as an instance of grass-roots democratization and empowerment. Aruna Gnanadason's exceptional article about India traces the plunder of resources in her country to colonialism and systems of domination by gender, class and race; she goes on to argue that the "cultural traditions of prudent exploitation of natural resources" that had existed for centuries are necessary to restore a steady-state economy that puts people and environment before profits.

The third section addresses the myriad ecofeminist responses to globalization. Noel Sturgeon recalls the tendency in the 1970s to blame poor women for the environmental crisis and urges all women today to "act together against power". Wan-Li Ho discusses the significant legislative victories that Taiwanese nuns and monks have achieved on behalf of animal and human rights. Mary Judith Ress critiques the Christian theme of "divine child abuse" in the crucifixion narrative and shares the Con-Spirando Collective's goal of developing a more compassionate and inclusive spirituality in South America. Ivone Gebara compares the historic male control of morality and the Catholic Church with western society's often immoral oppression of nature and women. Masatsugu Maruyama discusses the role of gender in Japanese spiritualism and speculates on how female empowerment might reshape Japanese culture. Finally, Greta Gaard discusses ecofeminism's contribution to the Green Party and credits the Youth Green movement with having the courage to challenge the myth of biological determinism in order to transcend traditional gender roles.

In my view, the thought-provoking articles in "Ecofeminism & Globalization" point the way towards an ethic that might help transform our world for the better. It is highly recommended to all.

Book Description

The period 2000--2002 will witness the single greatest change in global economic and business conditions ever-the realignment from traditional corporate structure to Internet-leveraged styles of brand-owning, customer-focused companies. This realignment is occurring now, even as you read these words. In MetaCapitalism: The E-Business Revolution and the Design of 21st-Century Companies and Markets, Grady Means and David Schneider-two of today's most influential and innovative global strategists-gather and make sense of the many changes the e-business revolution has fostered. Case histories and examples, from major corporations like Cisco Systems and major industries like the automobile industry, reveal how market leaders today are accelerating economic growth and value creation by capitalizing on the following:

Global expansion of market access
Better leverage of capital
Significant advances in operating efficiency
Improvements in the efficiency of capital markets
Dramatic unleashing of human potential and capital

It isn't a question of if your company will transform to an e-business model-it's a question of when. By 2002, virtually every major company in every sector will, by necessity, transform from a conventional to an e-business model. MetaCapitalism sets out the strategies and impacts of this fundamental change and introduces the new concepts that will become a natural part of the business lexicon in the near future. In this new era of outsourcing and diminishing physical capital base, how will companies be valued by the markets? Can "brand-owning" companies-as opposed to manufacturers-maintain sufficient controls and systems to guarantee that their network partners are well integrated with each other and the marketplace? How will "value-added communities"-both horizontal and vertical-support brand owners in dramatically reducing costs, increasing quality, and responding rapidly to customer demand and market shifts? MetaCapitalism answers all these questions and more, backed by the trusted experience and leadership-and market-driving innovation-that have always characterized the PricewaterhouseCoopers team. This thought-provoking book presents a template for success in the rapidly developing world of business-to-business e-business-a world which tomorrow's leaders must begin to understand and master today.

1 out of 5 stars There's a reason why used copies go for [cheap].......2003-06-25

This is a book that I read during the internet frenzy and recently revisited.

During the frenzy I thought it did a decent job of defining various roles a product producing or telecom company can have, separating a company to it's functional componenets, and did the usual job of having a company focus on it's core competencies. It only addressed supply chain companies, a card that was overplayed back then, yet a decent area of improvement with the application of the internet.

Yet it seemed like the authors struggled on every page to not say that Cicso is great, all companies should be Cisco, and if you hire them they wil make you into a Cisco by copying what Cicso did, and you'd get a Cisco market multiple. The catch is a variety of factors helped Cisco evolve organically, and a retroactive fit is risky in the sense that it would be artificial and thus unsustainable. Also, the whole think-tank and incubator type centralized company was en-vouge and this book tried to compliment a potential client/company that they could be in that special inner circle. Yet not everyone can be a chef in a time of limited kitchens, busboys, customers, etc. Beyond that, it seemed like the normal strategic rhetoric of putting your company in the middle of some diagram or four box chart, or citing some survey from what is most likely a 24 year old's opinion when faced with a deadline. A final reaction from reading it in 2000 was that it was also free lottery ticket in the sense that the salesmen authors tried to sell a major major overhaul to firms, and as career consultants it would be unlikely that they would be able to implement or take responsibility. But lottery tickets were free back then.

Now that I've revisited the book, I see that it was actually a joke even with the hindsight bias. If a company divests all assets and becomes a brand name, it brings tremendous risk into it's ongoing existance. This is underscored by the fact that all poster child companies mentioned in the book are now either out of business or trading [cheap], with the exception of course with Cisco.

The value in the book now would be similar to the Pets.com puppet, or putting one share of webvan in a picture frame. The catch is that nobody cared about this book back then, so it loses it's nostalgic value.

1 out of 5 stars This book holds no water.......2002-10-24

This book is merely a sales pitch written by PwC executives looking to drum up e-business sales. It is full of "e" cliches and flies in the face of accepted business theories -- such as transaction cost economics. This type of thinking by top PwC partners is clearly the reason why that firm is currently merging with IBM Global Services.

1 out of 5 stars Alter Wein in neuen Schläuchen.......2001-01-09

4 out of 5 stars Overview of e-Markets & PwC Advert.......2000-12-07

Aimed at business leaders, `Meta-Capitalism' offers an attractively presented, concise but unrefenced/supported PwC view of e-business markets.

Chapters span: B2B decapitalization revolution; Metcapitalism marketplace dynamics; B2B process models; Intelligent behavior of markets; B2B anecdotes; performance measures; and organizational transformation.

Strengths include: positive tone and brevity of descriptions; very attractive diagrams & tables; and a useful timely synthesis of content. The core message is: branding ("anti- Cluetrain Manifesto"), value-adding communities ("pro-Cluetrain Manifesto"), standard interlinking systems (processes; backoffice; SCM; CRM etc..) between end-customer through value chains to tiers of suppliers (products & services), and some basic financial ratios/measures. The author's also offer the formula e(b)= M(C)*2, representing B2B model= management (change times courage), emphasizing the energy of the new metamarketplace.

Weaknesses include: lack of referencing/ support for much public-domain anecdotes; superficiality of analyses & case studies; rather abstract theoretical discussions; numerous technical errors (some e.g.s include: description 90s manufacturing actually 80s; problems with granularity in figures including 2.14; JIT 80s not 90s; SCM superficiality (no emphasis forecasting problems, data accuracy, prioritization, APS, Kanban etc..(Prof Towill at U. Cardiff has much to say on this)); and CRM & intelligence confusion despite emphasis); numerous cliched "pop-culture" references (many movies covered) quickly dating content; summary & repetition from of author's other book (Wisdom of CEO); and an ultimate message seemingly a sales pitch for PwC consulting services (where those who succeed will have embraced ERP & CRM & business processes).

Overall, `Meta-Capitalism' is a good book needing more science & rigor (and better grasp of technology & operations in e-marketplace context), and case studies/support to be amongst the best. Useful as a discussion starter, perhaps with Deise et al's PwC 'Executive Guide to E-Business' (ISBN 0471376396); and Tyndall et al's Ernst & Young 'Supercharging Supply Chains' (ISBN 0471254371); and any operations management text by Wild, Mullins, or Slack for operationalizing & analysing markets, operations, and strategy.

5 out of 5 stars Business Newbie likes Metacapitalism.......2000-08-26

I've been working as a web designer/developer, and now Information Architect for the past few years. I've been keeping track of the latest trends in software, code, applications, etc. My research has mostly been about bleeding-edge technology.

Now that my career MUST take into consideration the end-user (a trend that is confirmed throughout the book: customer focus), and how what is designed affects the end-user, my research focus has changed. Meta-Capitalism has steered me in a good direction and has clarified my responsibilities as well as for those who are transitioning their services to the Web.

As I focus on the B2B2C world, Grady Means and David Schneider have outlined a paradigm with caveats that will help shape my perspective on the future. The authors also provide a decent reading list to follow-up on themes discussed in the book such as real options theory.

This book also serves as a starting point for evaluating e-biz companies for investment opportunities.

MetaCapitalism covers the fundamentals for the ensuing direction of e-business. A MUST read for those who intend to work in the Internet business beyond cashing in their stock options.

Are you unhappy with your current job or are you considering a career change? Have you just graduated from college and are looking for a job that pays more than $15/hour? Jobs that Pay a Lot describes four high-paying jobs that you can enter with little or no experience and a minimum of training. While this book doesn't train you for these jobs, it does tell you how and where to get the training you need, and how to get started in your new career. Understand, this is not a get-rich quick scheme. These are legitimate careers that require dedication and commitment. These careers are easy to train for, relatively easy to enter, and will be in high demand for a long time to come. Best of all, they allow you to make an excellent salary after just a few years. There is no guarantee that you'll be making $100,000 in your first year, but it is possible to earn $100,000-$400,000 (depending on the job) within a few years. How many people can say that?

This was one of the best career books I have read. I will be graduating this spring and I wasn't sure what I was going to do but now I do. I would have given it only 4 stars because there are only 4 jobs that are detailed in the book but the 4 are completely different and 2 of them sound really exciting and make over $100,000 after a few years. I highly recommend this book, whether you are still in school, about to graduate or have been unemployed for awhile. This is the stuff that they should teach you about in school.

                    Book Description

This text examines national and international intellectual property (IP) agencies in the light of global change and in context of their transformation from a long era of contented obscurity to that of increasing political and economic exposure and controversy. Taking a basic institutional perspective, the text examines the changes in relationships among four national and international IP agencies: the patent offices of the US, UK, Canada and Australia; the World Intellectual Property Office; the European Patent Office; and the World Trade Organization. Focusing on the 1990s, the book traces institutional changes that centre on the core trade-off in intellectual property policy between protection and dissemination of intellectual property. These are examined in relation to the two broad clusters of interests that operate around the protection versus dissemination functions. The former is dominated by big business and the IP professions and the latter by more dispersed interests.

                      Book Description

In five decades, Taiwan has shifted from an authoritarian regime to a multi-party democracy, has moved steadily toward modernization, and has become an economically affluent, socially pluralistic society. Its experience provides valuable lessons for developing countries. This book offers a critical assessment of Taiwan's path to modernization, focusing particularly on developments of constitutional democracy and the rule of law, democratic transition and consolidation, internationalization and globalization, and social developments. From its market economy to its democratization, Taiwan provides a valuable case study. On social developments, it provides a unique model of demographic transition, rising women's social status, and the emergence of the nuclear family. In eighteen chapters written by prominent scholars, this book examines the multiple aspects of Taiwan's modernization in a global perspective.

                        Book Description

In marked contrast to other regimes that have, virtually overnight, abandoned state control of enterprises and espoused Western models of corporate governance, China has pursued a gradual transition suited to its own unique traditions, culture, and customs. Although this new corporate system is still evolving, it is clear that China is now ready for a nation-wide movement of corporatisation and reform. Comparative Corporate Governance draws on the entire corpus of corporate governance theory, both East and West, and also on the experience of many countries since the 1930s, to develop a coherent model appropriate for China. In the process the author shows how various corporate mechanisms have been tentatively introduced into China's state-owned enterprises and how such experimentation has, piece by piece, provided a firm basis for a modern enterprise system. How to build an efficient and culturally appropriate governance system, both in law and in practice, on th! is foundation is the focus of this book. The analysis is notable for its insistence that, for a corporate governance system to work, the principles and practicalities of that system must be derived from customary cultural norms. Experience shows that imported models, although they may be enshrined in law, lead to economic stagnation unless actual practice is monitored and reformed and the laws change to reflect these necessary adjustments. Thus the model proposed here begins with the Company Law of 1994, and proceeds to show how practical experience is already providing valuable data for the task of improving the law. This process, by which law and business practice continue to "regulate" each other, is, in the author's view, the essential ingredient of a successful corporate system. The author's approach is fundamentally comparative. He discusses and analyses models that have either created globally powerful corporate economies or carried out reforms that have brought new i! nsights to corporate development. In this connection he examines the law and experience of the UK, the USA, Germany, and Japan, as well as Chinese communities overseas and some former British Commonwealth countries. This remarkable book is of inestimable value to practitioners and academics in the field of international economic law. In addition, its often startling perspectives on the accepted models of corporate governance are sure to spark a reassessment of the nature of corporations and their role in social and economic life.

                          Book Description

The first in-depth analysis of how global governance impacts on the lives of ordinary people. This new volume includes four detailed case studies on labour, migration, children and development that explore the actual nature of governance policies in the GPE.

Jean Grugel and Nicola Piper clearly show how global governance, the creation of global norms and regimes to regulate polities, economic and social actors, suggests and promotes ideals such as stable politics, democracy, human rights and individualism, with a strategy to create a more ordered and ultimately better world.

They move away from the traditional focus on elites, states and global institutions to explore and analyze how liberal global governance is really affecting ordinary people and how this is often an obstacle to development, citizenship, voice and inclusion. Paying particular attention to the global south, Asia and Latin America, these expert authors trace the development of liberal global governance. They also clearly examine and study how this regulation has spread from areas such as trade and investment, to development, labour, migration, children and the environment.

                              Book Description

This work is a theoretical exploration into the nature of relations between multilateral agencies on the one hand and grassroots and community-based organizations in developing countries on the other. Specifically, the authors apply competing theories of world and comparative politics to explain the nature and significance of efforts by international organizations to engage and empower local civil society organizations.

4 out of 5 stars My goal in writing the book.......1999-12-08

As the editor, I can tell you that my goal in writing this book is to get students of international affairs to start looking systematically at what happens when international organizations like the UN or the EU decide to directly engage local non-governmental organizations in the Third World. This phenomenon, while widespread, has only just begun to penetrate the awareness of most experts in the field, and they often don't even know which words to use, let alone ideas, to describe and explain what is happening. I brought together a number of people with quite different perspectives on the issue and had them each write their own piece, after which we met together at a conference and compared notes. What you will find is that, although we use very different terminology, we all ended up saying many of the same things, that UN efforts to build up local organizations from the outside are analogous to other things in international relations, from neo-colonialism to balance of power politics to development aid projects. In other words, we already have the analytical tools to understand most of what is going on. We are also ina position to predict that these efforts to strengthen "civil society" within Third World countries is probably going to largely backfire unless it is done very carefully with great sensitivity to local political and social conditions. Enjoy the book!

For the dictionary on Japanese economy, ¡®MIT Encyclopedia of the Japanese Economy¡¯ has been widely used. Such a dictionary is needed for you can¡¯t read all the material on the Japanese economy. Literatures on Japanese economy are still flooding on the market. Moreover, there are so many sub-disciplines that you can never read through them all, and even making a reading list is prohibitively time-consuming.
MIT Encyclopedia was updated in 1999 to the 2nd edition. It deals with mainly big topics such as unemployment with some length. But this book, published in 2002, tackles not only general economic subjects, but business affairs like Sony, Japanese business in US, and Chalmers Johnson, as title implies. And that I think the quality of articles is not behind MIT¡¯s. This book¡¯s contributors are well-known figures in Japanese studies. And like MIT¡¯s at the end of each article is the reading list on that subject.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Reference.......2002-02-15

This book is the most comprehensive reference I have seen on Japanese business related topics. Entries cover business history, leaders, management, technology, and company profiles. The authors appear to be well informed and up-to-date on what is happening in Japan, the writing is concise and the citations are helpful for research. I highly recommed this as a must-have reference for anyone interested in Japan and/or global business.
