Good, clear writing appears effortless. But chances are, the more effective the communication, the more work that went into making it so. Rare is the individual whose professional or personal life doesn't call for some written communication. Jan Venolia's Rewrite Right! is small enough to slip into a laptop carrying case, yet it offers, as the author says, "a solid foundation in the principles of revising." Venolia recommends editing on two levels--first to improve the writing, then to correct the language--and lays out her lesson plan with a four-page editing checklist. Most professional writers (though, believe me, certainly not all) understand the importance of writing to an audience, avoiding jargon and hackneyed expressions, and getting the words right. Fits nicely on th writing desk.......2005-03-31

Jan Venolia covers the editing process in essentially five stages: Content, style, punctuation, grammar and mechanical style. Rewrite Right functions better as a grammatical reference book than as a guide for how to edit an article or book. This is because her discussion of style, punctuation and mechanical style all inherently involve understanding grammar.

Vernolia's approach is to writing is technical, not theoretical. So, if your thinking and writing is nebulous, and you need help refining your ideas into a coherent message, Rewrite Right is not the book for you. However, if you are pleased with the orderliness of your work, Rewrite Right will assuredly help you isolate grammatical errors and inconsistencies in your writing style. Venolia also points out the grammatical subtleties that separates amateur scribblers from professional writers.

Rewrite Right is more functional than other grammar books I've purchased because it is small, 6 X 7, and contains just 189 well-used pages. Her use of images and short sentences from famous authors, particularly Mark Twain, also make this a fun read and quick learning tool. Her Index saves time.

Good functional little book.......2002-06-13

This is a simple and functional book that will assist any editor or writer. It contains some very useful advice about the craft of rewriting which is 80 per cent of writing.

I agree with the previous reviewer. The writing is juvenile and can get annoying. I would not reccommend this book for those who want a history. There is not much historical analysis. It is more of a compilation of rather trivial information.

Superficial, error-ridden, and overpriced.......2006-09-13

This slim volume might be worth the price at 18 dollars, but the $45 students are forced to pay for this book, used as a textbook, is outrageous. The book's vocabulary and its assumptions about the level of knowledge of the reader lumps it in with juvenile literature. For example, it tells the reader that ancient Greeks and Romans had a democratic form of government, and that democracy means the citizens vote, just like in the United States.

The book appears an attempt to "candy-coat" (almost literally!) history for cooking students who are assumed to know nothing of it. It has long sections of history at a 9th-grader's level, with only minimal coverage of foodstuffs at some points.

Worse, it is riddled with errors and inaccuracies. For example, the last section I read before returning it for a refund covered sourdough bread. Civitello said that San Francisco sourdough really is different, as San Franciscans claim, because "the yeast in the air of San Francisco is a different variety, lactobacillus sanfrancisco." This is blatantly wrong, as lactobacillus is a bacterium and yeast is a mold. It was delightful to learn, after some online research, that the bacterium lactobacillus sanfrancisco does contribute to the unique taste of San Francisco sourdough. But the statement in the book was clearly wrong, and typical of the level of accuracy throughout.

Engaging, witty, and a great addition to your cookbook library!.......2006-01-13

I am the Director of a culinary school in Southern California. We have been using Tannahill's text for our Food History course; that is until Cuisine and Culture was published. While Tannahill provides a deeply detailed timeline, with links to historical events, and is quite a scholarly tome, convincing our students to actually read the book has been an uphill battle. Cuisine and Culture changed all that. This book belies Civitello's true passion for food, delights our students, and serves as the perfect complement to our World Civilization course. It is full of fascinating side-notes, dispels many urban legends (the recipe for Coca Cola is not a secret; it can be found on page 209), and provides historically accurate recipes that our students then make and bring into class. I especially like the time she spends on the 20th century, and her conjectures on the future of food. Probably not the right book for one pursuing a PhD in food history, but definitely for anyone who loves food!

Not Good At All.......2005-11-09

This book is horrible. The author has many inaccuracies, for example, Boulanger opened his restaurant in 1765, not 1745 as Linda indicates. She completely leaves out the Ottoman Turks who play a significant role in the Crusandes and cuisine, and she constantly bounces back and forth with dates and places. If you are a hobbyist and have time to spare, you may want to start reading to form your own opinion, however if you seriously want to know about the true history of food, I would not recommend this book.

Food is not the stuff of which history is made.......2004-12-13

What the other reviewers say is truth. However, the author barely explains how food has influenced on human history. Then, we become essential for food, which needs us to achieve its function, i.e., to be eaten, not the other way round.I would much rather reccomend "Food in History" by REAY TANNAHILL.

Home But Not Alone is a complete, easy-to-read handbook for the work-at-home-with-kids parent. The suggestions and ideas are sensible, straightforward, and useable. The worksheets, that I almost didn't want to complete because "I don't have the time", help focus your thinking and decision-making. This book has been very useful to me in setting up my home business in addition to being a stay-at-home parent. My only reqret is that I waited so long to read it as its suggestions are great for just finding time to get things done!

Terrific introductory book on beginning investing.......2004-12-20

I actually picked this book up for a dollar at a thrift store. One of the best investments I ever made. It is an excellent introduction to the basics of money management & investing. In particular, it highlights well certain basic concepts such as the shrinking value of the dollar, compounding, importance of saving, attractiveness of mutual funds for the small time investor, and more.

The pictures & layout aid in a very very good introduction to the subject matter.

I found this book informative, but an unnecessary read.If you have a brain that functions at a level above a 10-year-old's mind, then this book will not teach you anything new.Yes You Can reiterates the importance of saving your money to build interest, but spending enough so you get the most you can for the value of a dollar. You should have a budget and decide what to buy carefully. Plan for the future. Personally, I feel this book should be retitled "Idiot's guide to money." Yes You Can may be vital for some, but hopefully common sense exists in most.

I have two of this book and loan to young people to read. This book teaches the importance and benifits of investing in an easy manner. The book is tops and so is it's author.

I was initially attracted to this book because I have several mutual funds with Mr Stowers company-AMERICAN CENTURY INVESTORS (formerly 20th Century Investors) Stowers espouses the power of mutual fund investing, valuable at a time when many literally deify individual stocks, includes charts and how to pick mutual fund winners--as Stowers states; "All mutual funds are not equal, some are better than others" Finding money to invest and post retirement strategies. The personal survey included in the book is like a financial check up and future planner. If you want to make a profit from investing and get the most from mutuals this is the book for you. I also highly recommend "MORE WEALTH W/O RISK" by Charles J. Givens and 'Mutual Fund Strategies" by Jack Dicks.
