Customer Reviews:
A MUST-Read... For Everyone.......2007-01-29
I've been in emergency services for over thirty years, and got my first dose of crisis communications training from Steven Fink's "Crisis Management". Judy Hoffman's book, however, concentrates almost exclusively on crisis communications, a topic which often gets short shrift in other crisis books. This superbly-written volume is a gem. Her "Ten C's of Effective Communications" alone are worth the price of the book. Even if you're not a CEO, Mayor, Governor, or even President, you can benefit from this book. If nothing else, when little Bobby smacks a line drive through the neighbor's plate glass window, this book could save your butt. If you ARE a senior executive, you need this book more than any other, bar none.
Expert tips on how to handle a crisis.......2005-02-09
Judy Hoffman provides excellent, step by step tips on how to handle a crisis with the media. Managers of every stripe should read this book NOW, before the next disaster strikes.
Must Read for Communications professionals.......2002-12-27
I enjoyed reading this book a great deal. It vaidated much of what I had already learned and pointed me to new and useful techniques, ideas and resources. Not only MUST communications professionals read this book, I think it is a valuable tool for anyone who wants to understand the dynamic world of media and news reporting
brillaint and necessary.......2002-08-29
I wish I read this book sooner. Working in PR puts me in front of the media all too often and I wish that I had had this book when I first started. It could have saved me some grief. But I've read this book now and also Michael Levine's Guerrilla PR Wired so that I now know everything to make me a success.
Great advice for college administrators.......2002-05-30
Judy Hoffman's book is a great tool for PR Directors and Public Affairs Directors at colleges and universities to use to prepare or update their Crisis Communications Plans. Her book is easy to read with great tips, including her "10 C's of Good Crisis Communications." I can't imagine a better resource to utilize than this book. If I am ever faced with a tragedy on our campus, I would first turn to my Crisis Communications Plan and then re-read this book.

A useful book.......2005-11-02
The Veg Out Vegetarian Guide to Seattle and Portland is a pocket guide designed to slip in a purse or travel bag. It's got a sturdy cover and slim design. It also includes a fold-out map of both cities (somehow the map of Portland is much larger and easier to read, perhaps because the editors decided to cover a smaller geographical area.)
The book is organized geographically and actully includes "Seattle East," which is really the cities of Bellevue, Kirkland and surrounding suburbs; Bellingham (north of Seattle); Olympia and Tacoma (south); and Eugene, Oregon in addition to Seattle and Portland. Grocery stores, farmers markets, and juice bars have their own chapters and there's a short list of local northwest vegetarian orgainzations. There are three indices: alphabetical, by cuisine, and an index of "top ten" lists for food, atmosphere and best buys.
Each restaurant is rated by star and price. There's a cuisine designation and the bottom of each entry tells how "veg friendly" each location is, for example "Full menu with vegetarian and vegan options." Since most of the restaurants listed are not exclusively vegetarian, I would have appreciated an index listing the veg-only restaurants. It has been omitted from the cuisine index.
Seattle and Portland are both veg-friendly cities, but it might be hard for a visitor to know where to start. The VegOut editors have listed all the major favorites of local vegetarians as well as some of the lessor known finds like Hillside Quickies in Seattle and The Tao of Tea in Portland. --Amy O'Neill Houck
A New World of Vegetarian Delights.......2005-07-01
"The food ranges from the samosas, pakoras, and curries found in Indian restaurants to upper-worldly treats such as Tseral-mixed vegetable balls..." ~George Stevenson describing Himalayan Sherpa in Seattle, WA
There is an entire world beyond salads and side orders of vegetables and this book proves it. If you love visiting Seattle & Portland or you are a Vegetarian looking for an excellent dining guide, this should impress you. The size of this book makes it easy to keep in your backpack, purse or car.
The Restaurants are found in Seattle, Bellingham, Olympia, Tacoma, Portland and Eugene. There are listings for Tea Houses, Juice Bars, Farmers Markets and Green Grocers. You could enjoy tea in a Chinese Temple, visit a fun PCC Natural Market (my personal favorite for natural foods and organic products) or sample Mulitethnic cuisines at many interesting locations. They even list Larry's Markets where I used to work.
Some of the highlights:
The Elliot Bay Café - Try a Veggie Reuben in the café in the basement of the famous Elliot Bay Books in Seattle.
Shalimar - Exotic foods like Mulligatawny Stew or dishes with eggplant, mango and lotus stems.
Persian House - Pomegranate sauces and lentil dishes and they have a nice buffet lunch at a very reasonable price.
George Stevenson's creative writing style is refreshing and honest. He makes each location sound completely tantalizing. The listings all have a star rating, hours, payments accepted, Parking locations, Yes/No for Alcohol and Atmosphere Description. Some of the restaurants are completely Vegan and some have Full Menus with Vegan Options.
You could go to an upscale restaurant in the evening or stop by a Family restaurant with great artwork and enjoy a relaxing lunch.
The next time I'm in Seattle or Portland and my husband asks me where we should eat; this is the guide I'm going to show him. In fact, you could almost plan a trip just so you could visit some of these locations.
Also look for Veg Out Books for Southern California, New York City, San Francisco Bay Area and Washington D.C.

I found some great new restaurants!.......2004-09-29
I have been a vegetarian living in Seattle since 1991; this book revealed some great new vegetarian places I had somehow missed! I gave it to a visiting friend. Great book for a person visiting town; fits right in your pocket.

A great way to get the good jobs fast.......2002-02-13
I sent out lots of e-mails looking for work, but didn't get much results until I bought and read this book. I even called up the author and she gave me more tips. It's great to find everything you need to get started in one place--and it really worked for me. I think that's because she owns a successful mystery business and knows what they look for when they hire.
Don't waste your money...overpriced book.......2001-11-26
Sure it's 122 pages..if you count the dozens of blank pages, title pages, pages they left blank for you to make notes, and of course the author bio page. gimme a break
I did some research on this topic using the internet, probably spending an hour. This book taught me no more than what I learned in that one hour of web surfing.
Great book.......2000-10-15
As the operator of a mystery shopping company, I find this book gives shoppers a good idea of what is expected of them and the type of qualities mystery shopping companies look for in shoppers. It also provides a good overview of the mystery shopping industry whether you are interested in being a shopper or operating a mystery shopping company.
Get Paid to Shop speaks volumes.......2000-08-30
Get Paid to Shop-Opportunities in Mystery Shopping serves three audiences: those who want to become mystery shoppers, veteran mystery shoppers, and those who are interested in starting a mystery shopping business of their own. This book has balance. It is compact and concise, yet complete and clear. This book is informative. For new mystery shoppers, it explains mystery shopping, how to find work, and how much money you should expect to make. For veteran mystery shoppers, it explains how to become a better shopper, how to make more money, and how to get more jobs. For example, the extensive list of mystery shopping companies is thoughtfully arranged by state to help you find more work. Get Paid to Shop also includes a list of Internet resources and Canadian mystery shopping companies. For those who are considering starting a mystery shopping business, this book explains what is involved, details the benefits and responsibilities, and helps you decide if owning a mystery shopping business is right for you. Get Paid to Shop is full of well-organized information that is clearly presented. I recommend it.
What a great book! I read it in less than 2 hours........1999-07-22
I felt the content was right on target. This book gives people a great overview if they might be interested in starting their own business. It gives contract shoppers important information about their role in this industry with specific behavior noted. I think this is a good tool for shoppers.

Book Description
Answer the bankruptcy questions that keep you up at night. Trying to decide whether or not to file for bankruptcy? This new Quick & Legal book from consumer debt expert Robin Leonard addresses questions and concerns that may be keeping you up into the wee hours.
If I file for bankruptcy... Will I wipe out all of my debts? Probably. And if not all of them, at least most. (See Chapter 3.)
Will I lose my house? If you are up to date on your mortgage payments or can get up to date, you're not likely to lose your house. (See Chapter 4.)
Will I lose my apartment? Not if you're current on your rent. (See Chapter 4.)
Can I keep my car and other property? Most likely. Most people lose no property when they file for bankruptcy. (See Chapter 5.)
Can I keep my credit cards? Probably not--but there's no reason to. (See Chapters 6 and 9.)
Will I lose my job? No. An employer may not fire you solely because you filed for bankruptcy. (See Chapter 7.)
Will I lose custody of my children? No. Divorce judges see a lot of people who file for bankruptcy. (See Chapter 7.)
Will I go to jail? Not unless you commit perjury, defraud the bankruptcy court or commit a similar act. (See Chapter 7.)
Will someone from the bankruptcy court visit my home or business? No. (See Chapter 7.)
Can I move? Yes. (See Chapter 7.)
Can I change jobs? Yes. (See Chapter 7.)
Can I get divorced? Yes. (See Chapter 7.)
Will my friends and neighbors find out? It's unlikely, unless you tell them. (See Chapter 7.)
Is it hard to file? It's about as hard as filing a 1040 long-form tax return. (See Chapter 8.)
Will I be able to get credit in the future? Yes--and more than likely, fairly soon after your bankruptcy case ends. (See Chapter 9.)
Will I be able to rent an apartment in the future? This is the one area in which people sometimes run into problems. But there are steps you can take to help yourself. (See Chapter 9.)
Is bankruptcy even necessary? Not everyone needs to file or should file. An alternative might be the answer. (See Chapter 10.)

Customer Reviews:
Excellent book.......2004-12-30
I read this book (borrowed through the library) not because of financial difficulties, but because I wanted to brush up on some technicalities of bankruptcy. In the past I've had clients take bankruptcy and I've had to deal with the bankrutpcy proceedings. Although I do not currently do this sort of work I expect to enter another profession in the future where knowledge of the bankruptcy law and the individual states exemptions will make my job much easier. This book is an excellent overview of the bankrupcty law and I highly recommend it to anybody who is considering taking bankruptcy or deals with bankruptcy either directly or indirectly in their job.
Bankruptcy - Nolo Press guide .......2004-10-20
There are eleven chapters that cover Chapter 7 and 13 bankruptcies. A bankruptcy is either liquidation (7) or reorganization (11,12,13). They can last from a few months (7) to several years (11). Chapter 12 pertains to a large debt due to a family farm.
The questions and answers are categorized for Chapter 7 and 13, like the trustee and going to court. The meeting of creditors takes place 20-40 days after you file. My meeting took place a few weeks ago. This is a meeting you must attend and have no input into the date and time it takes place.
Filing the papers costs $209 in California. Once they have been filed all creditors must cease to contact you, utilities will not be disconnected if they were going to be, an eviction will be stopped, foreclosures and judgments get an automatic stay. It is mentioned that in some states loss of driver's license happens because of a liability for damages stemming from an automobile accident. The automatic stay will stop this from occurring as well. If you are dependent on the vehicle for family support filing bankruptcy might be the reason to keep your license.
Filing bankruptcy does not stop the enforcement of child support or alimony. The book goes into this topic in various chapters. Federal, Local and State taxes are not discharged through Chapter 7. Student loans are not covered either, although if you can prove hardship a portion might get discharged.
There is a checklist in a box format that covers each chapter. The back cover has a listing of questions referencing which chapter is covering that topic. There are some cartoon sketches in black and white that take reduce the stress level of this process. The index breaks down all the topics.
It is also recommended that your maiden and married names be cited in your papers. The section with questions about how the bankruptcy affects your personal life discuss employment and living. This should not impact your job and there is no reason why they would know about it, unless your wages were being garnished. This will be listed on your credit report and you will need to be diligent to make sure the creditors report this accurately. Filing for bankruptcy has nothing to do with jail, you did not break the law or lose your right to vote.
Bankruptcy: Is it the right solution to your debt problems will help you learn the schedules, how to pick your exemptions and decide if you are using a paralegal, lawyer or doing the forms yourself. This is a great guide to show you all the necessary documents needed to prepare with examples.
The author is a consumer debt expert. At the end of each chapter is a box to remind you that it is time to fill out the questions in the checklist. Businesses cannot file for Chapter 13 bankruptcy. There is also some information for newly married spouses to determine if both should be named in the bankruptcy.
Great, Fantastic........2002-10-12
This is really a must have. I handled my own chapter 13, start to finish with this one. Even handled the emergency filing to get mean ole nasty pasty creditors that were harassing me intentionally off my case. I was even able to file a complaint with them thru the bankruptcy courts. This book references this, and I called the clerks office, and checked out web sites, and this book gave me the confidence, to file a complaint against these creditors. The interderagatorys are fanstasic. THese really helped me out, at my creditors meetings. I was able to even able to pursue a wage garnishment out of my soon to b X's pay check. This was the only way I was going to keep my stuff. I really enjoyed I must say representing my self. It is really not that hard, and more of u folks out there need to try it. They really don't chew ya up and spit ya out like everyone believes. It was not that stress ful, after everything was filed. Actually, It was nice to bask in the quiteness of the emeregency filing. My phone quit ringing. It was soooo nice. This one belongs rite up there with my bible. It was a thrill I must say to stand in line to file my paper work, schedules, and yes, I even filed a motion.! It was great standing there next to some of my towns high power bankruptcy attorneys. ONly thing, I have to say, when attorneys, start offering free advise, have a pen ready to write. I also learned be nice as pie to the clerks. They are so busy, and swamped with work. U will be glad you had patience. Patience is a virtue on this one as far as filings go. THe creditors meetings went well, I even drafted my own propsals of what I wanted, to happend. I even learned how to contest the amount of my truck, and did so, and requested the interest rate be dropped. I got just what I wanted. It actually was not as a terrible as we are taught in society to think. Oh my she/he file bankruptcy. It was not that bad, and also the bankruptcy court I went to, had a class on how to balance your budget, and it was very informational. Dom't feel bad if you have to do this someday. It happens to the bestest of us. IF you do this is definitely the book you wanna seek. I have compared up to some of the competetions, and I felt this one was the easy one to use. Plainest english. Simplest terms. I didnot feel intimidated at all by this book. This book covered all the bases, and then some. Others books I feel were not as complete as this one was. I researched books and sat down and looked thru them at my local book store. THis one won hands down. I must say, it is flexible, easy to tote with you, easy to put in babys bag, and easy to tote on bike with grocerys, and easy to clean up. I spilled coffee on mine... wipes up great. Later, Betty Hogges. :)

Good info.......2005-02-01
I found this to be a great overview of a complex set of laws. It's broken down by subtitles which makes it easy for the reader to quickly find the most relevant answers. Seems to be written from an objective standpoint, providing the pro's and the con's.
bankruptcy facts.......2003-10-03
It appears that very few people really understand the dark side of bankruptcy. Yes, there's a good reason for a bankruptcy law, but it's not a panacea and there are many negative implications that people don't understand. This booklet really helps the reader make a more informed decision, and may help a lot of people avoid making a bad mistake. Bottom line? Only people who simply can never reasonably repay their debt should file bankruptcy. Nothing's free, and there are prices for bankruptcy.

Book Description
In the last 20 years, tuition has increased by a factor of more than 200 percent, which is 3 times the increase in earned income of the average family. It takes from 25 to 30 percent of a family's yearly after tax earnings to pay for a single child's college education. Utilizing their access to college counseling, admissions, and financial aid professionals at colleges and universities across the country, this father and son team have developed a program to make paying for college manageable. They enlighten, motivate, and encourage students and their parents to follow a set of 10 principles designed to help families get a handle on saving and financing a college education. Their mission is to reassure and to help families of every income level and at every stage of preparation to plan a strategy for paying for college.

Thank you Captain Obvious!.......2007-03-12
Some bookstore around my area was going out of business, so I decided to check it out for anything useful. I found two books that were going for two dollars each, but I only wanted to buy one. It was either a history book about Ford, in which I can read and later brag to my friends of all the trivia and dirty secrets I've learned about our favorite overly large truck company. Or some book about paying for college. For the sake of my precious dollar bills, I decided to go with the latter. Two days later I learned one thing.
I should have bought the Ford book.
I've never seen so much material put into a book that was so obvious and just plain common sense. Like the advice about getting good grades, so that scholarships can be more easily obtained.
"Hey, I never knew that!"
Naturally, you would expect some advice like this in any college finance book, but they just kept repeating this message over and over again. It's what this book is all about. Endless examples of Perfect Bob who not only volunteered at the animal shelter, but enjoyed visiting the retirement home, playing the ukulele to the enjoyment of the elderly crowd. And judging by his essays, also had elementary writing abilities, but so do I, so I'll let that pass. And guess what? He went to college with a full scholarship! Good for him! Never mind that most people don't do anything of this sort (We're too lazy. I'm too lazy, but I do donate. A lot actually. Did Perfect Bob pay for that dog food in the food shelter? No, I did!)
Point being? That anyone with this sort of academic and hard working ability will not need this book, nor will have ever read it. Most people who will buy this book probably had above average, but not stellar grades. And I bet few of them volunteered full time. In other words, the information provided in this book will be useless to them. So in the end, this book is just a summary of all the lousy information you get fed in high school by your teachers. Without the humor of seeing them sit on a whoopee cushion afterwards.
There is also some information about loans, but it's nothing new. I couldn't even finish the book, it just got too boring and predictable. I definitely wouldn't call it an engaging read. I understand that it's not supposed to be, but for the love of me, they should make it somewhat enjoyable so that I don't collapse into REM sleep within 10 minutes of reading.
I gave this book 2 stars instead of one because no book is ever a one star book as long as it does what the title says it will, no matter how badly it accomplishes it. And it has some useful internet links to state programs. But why not get the How to Go to College Almost for Free book by that nerdy kid? Not only does it have a cheesy tabloid title, but it wants me to get a higher education for free (almost)! And with bad grades to boot! Which means more money for Wendy's bacon cheeseburgers! And if anything else, buy it for that cover, where it has the author apparently too busy to put down his checklist of the book's targeted demographics.
If you have the basic knowledge of loans and scholarships, look elsewhere...
An excellent overview!.......2004-11-28
As a satisfied client of Howard Greene and Associates, I can highly recommend this book. As an admissions officer at a small, independent school, I sincerely appreciate the advice that Howard and Matthew Greene give to prospective applicants and their families. Part of the challenge to applicants today is understanding that there is a logic and a system to the financial aid process and, although it can be stressful and overwhelming, there are many things that students and parents can do to de-mystify the experience. The point of the book is not to give the reader a list of insider "tips and tricks" to fool admissions and financial aid officers in the short term. It is, instead, to help parents begin planning for their childs' financial future early so that they end up well-positioned when the time comes to apply. _Paying for College_ is a necessary addition to the library of anyone applying to college and in need of financial support.
Clear Thinking on Financial Aid.......2004-11-20
With impressive clarity, the Greenes have de-mystified one of the denser elements of going to college. As a counselor to a group of college-bound students who require substantial financial aid, I have rarely seen a guide that packs as much useful information into such a short space. Especially helpful at the book's end is a calendar with the critical deadlines for applying for aid. The Greenes, with decades of experience in educational counseling, have provided a public service. I recommend this book with highest enthusiasm!
An Introduction only, and hardly a help.......2004-10-10
This is not a Good News book, but it will introduce you to all the standard vanilla ways you can approach the subject. But it's unusually weak on suggesting real ways to lower your out-of-pocket costs. Most people come to the issue of financial aid in the last minute. This book is totally irrelevant to them. It will have merit for parents whose kids are in diapers, but hardly addresses the reality show of parents in panic mode in their child's senior year of high school. Even their EFC chart on pages 102-103 confuses: there's no explanation as to how to assess the household income and the assets at the same time. It's a metaphor for the entire book: You have to figure it out yourself.
The discussion on financial aid officers at colleges is almost humorous, if not ludicrous. The authors' first observation is to remark on what a tough job these people have, and conclude with this incredulous remark (p 109): "They know how complicated the tax laws are...and how expensive college seems."
SEEMS? Hello!
The authors make the financial aid counselors look like guadian angels when, in fact, they are not in their positions to help parents. They work as guardians of the school's endowment, and you'd better know how to squeeze every dime out of these counselors that you can (Of course, the Greenes don't tell you how). By their incredible remarks about these guardians of the colleges' treasuries, the authors would have you believe that asking these people for help in getting more aid is like calling the IRS who will be more than happy to tell you all the loopholes you can use to pay less taxes.
This took the cake for me: "They are concerned," write the Greenes, "about how much you might take out in loans."
Reality check: Financial aid counselors don't give a wit about what you do with loans. Why would a complete stranger give a hoot about what you do with loans? The more loans you take out, the less FREE money they have to give you. How simple is that? Their job is to get the best students into their schools, and if your student is not in the top 20% of what they normally accept, expect to get courteous, but look-warm treatment. And if they accept your average student, they are going to give you more loans and less FREE money. Period. Only the top 20% get more FREE money and less loans.
The authors don't even address the new reality that is driving parents crazy. They don't mention that there are 8 states violating federal law by allowing illegal immigrants to get the same in-state tuition fees as US citizens. New York, California, and Texas are a few.
There's a lot of reality missing here. This book gives you a picture of the battle before you, but instead of telling you where to get the real ammunition to win the battle, all you get is a bunch of arrows - with blunt tips - and a lot of good luck.
