Book Description
"It is no easy matter to make a good selection of readings on exploring urban America, but Roger W. Caves does it excellently in a substantial collection published by Sage. . . . The collection is intended as an introductory reader, but it could also well serve as a main text in U.S. urban studies." --Barry Cullingworth Review An outstanding new introductory text, Exploring Urban America presents a collection of seminal articles gathered from top urban studies journals. This carefully edited and accessible collection of articles introduces undergraduate students to the interdisciplinary field of urban studies and urban affairs. As such, it investigates a variety of areas, including cities and urbanism, urban history, urban policy, economic development, community development, community services and infrastructure, housing, urban education, and growth. Each section of this reader begins with an introduction by a leading figure in the field. This text is skillfully synthesized and provides an accessible format that will serve well as an introductory reader/text for students of urban studies, political science, and public administration.

Whether you write an occasional professional letter or a daily newspaper column, William Zinsser's On Writing Well should be required reading. Simplicity is Zinsser's mantra: he preaches a stripped-down writing style, strong and clear. He has no patience for excess (most use of adjectives and adverbs, he writes, just adds clutter) or tired phraseology (for instance, he'd like to outlaw all leads involving those "future archaeologists" most often found "stumbl[ing] upon the remains of our civilization"). He recommends that all writers of nonfiction read their work aloud (don't commit something to paper that you wouldn't actually say) and write under the assumption that "the reader knows nothing" (not to be confused with assuming the reader's an idiot). In addition to the chapters on the expected--usage, audience, interviews, leads--Zinsser also focuses on such trouble spots as science and technical writing, business writing, sports, and humor.
Book Description
On Writing Well, which grew out of a course that William Zinsser taught at Yale, has been praised for its sound advice, its clarity, and for the warmth of its style. It is a book for anybody who wants to learn how to write or who needs to do some writing to get through the day, as almost everybody does. Whether you want to write about people or places, science and technology, business, sports, the arts, or about yourself in the increasingly popular memoir genre, On Writing Well offers you both fundamental principles as well as the insights of a distinguished practitioner. With over a million copies in print, this volume has stood the test of time and remains a valued resource for writers and would–be writers.

If I had a time machine, I would pack a bag to deliver to my former self. In that bag, along with the dating advice and stock tips, I would put "The Elements of Style" and this book.
Great book at a great price.......2007-08-26
I teach writing and have used this book for almost a decade. It is clear, straightforward, and to the point. The author teaches by example. You won't be sorry...
Classic Writing on Writing.......2007-08-26
This is the 30th anniversary edition of Zinsser's classic book on writing that should be reprinted as long as people are writing in the English language. Parts I, II and IV are a primer on how to write well. Along with Strunk and White's The Elements of Style, Zinsser's three sections say all there is to say on writing nonfiction--read it, understand it and review it often. He also writes in a personal, encouraging style. For example, he tells the reader that even for him, writing is hard work. That is a clue on what it takes to write well and a message to anyone struggling with an article, school paper, report or any other written product--even the pros write, rewrite and rewrite. Section III is a manual on writing specific types of products--business, interviews, travel, sports, etc. If you want to write, buy this book and don't leave Amazon until you buy Strunk and White too. With these two books, you never need to read another how-to book on writing.
The Mechanics of Writing Well.......2007-07-29
The most important part of the presentation is the first sentence
because it captures the readers' interest. Subsequent sentences must
build upon the original sentence until it's time for a conclusion.
In science, writing must be clear and robust with a minimum of
complexity or undefined/unfathomable terms. The author provides
good examples of his major thesis in the unfolding presentation.
The text is easy to read and apply.
One of the best general writing books out there.......2007-07-28
This was the first book I ever bought on writing, and I credit it with jump-starting my career as a copywriter. Whether you're a copywriter, novelist, or just enjoy writing this book will help you polish up your prose and get you well on your way to becoming the kind of writer who can hook people in from the word go. And best of all, despite the bland sounding title, it's actually a great read. Zinser has a way with words that stays with you and makes everything you write a little bit better.

Book Description
Learn how to get more bang for your intellectual property buck!
This book effectively bridges the gap between attorneys who understand the law and managers who are called upon to make business decisions regarding intellectual assets. It is directly targeted at individuals who must deal with the business principles of intellectual property and succinctly explains how to manage limited resources more intelligently to maximize a company's intellectual property investment.
Customer Reviews:
Valuable advice.......2002-06-05
If you think books about entrepreneurship are mostly boring, self-evident dreck, this book is a welcome exception. Mr. Schaafsma offers an unusually frank, enlightened perspective on the role of patents, trademarks and copyrights (or ýIPý) in the marketplace, providing humorous case studies, cogent analyses and practical strategies for maximizing the value of a business through cost-effective intellectual property management. The Entrepreneurs Guide explains why IP is important to businesses, what gives IP its sometimes irrational value, and what to expect when you start messing around with IP in a business. A ýmust readý for any entrepreneur or entrepreneur wannabe, I give it to my entrepreneur clients so they can come up to speed on an important and somewhat esoteric area of business and law quickly. ýItýs not quite as funny as Far Side cartoons, but itýs OK even for guys with small attention spansý said one of my favorite (successful) clients. I consider that high praise.
An Excellent Resource.......2002-05-28
Mr. Schaafsma provides an insightful, straight forward summary of the complex world of intellectual property in a comprehensive and easy-to-understand format. This book examines patents, trademarks and copyrights and provides useful, real-world guidance on the uses and benefits of intellectual property in today's challenging business climate.
This book is NOT a boring, laborious dissertation on the minute details of patent, trademark or copyright law. To the contrary, this book helps make sense of the often-intimidating world of intellectual property.
It's a valuable resource for any business manager, or entrepreneur interested in investing in, or optimizing the use of, his or her organization's intellectual property.

Book Description
Senior Sense is a financial guide for seniors and their families. As we age, finances are as important as our health. This book will provide seniors with information that includes how to organize their financial records. It offers advice on how to protect seniors from financial predators and empower them with knowledge to make financial decisions with confidence. While there are many books on the market that deal with finances, there are none that are geared specifically to seniors until now.
Customer Reviews:
Senior Sense.......2002-03-06
I am a senior and have read and used this book. It provides valuable worksheets to record all personal financial information. It is written in layman's terms so that it is easily understood. The book also provides information on how to check on financial and legal professionals you may be considering hiring in order to insure that you are not getting involved with someone that has had legal complaints filed against them. The information in this book helps seniors protect themselves and I highly recommend that not only seniors but also families members consider this useful tool.

Christmas Gift.......2001-11-20
I was looking for a Christmas gift for my parents. The title, "Senior Sense" intrigued me. My selection was right on target for my parents. The book is an easy reading, quick reference, organized pamphlet for storing my parent's financial records. The book will benefit my parents, as well as me, if anything were to happen to them. Don't wait, take an interest in your parent's well being and organize your parent's finances before it is too late.
This book is not as good as it says it is..........2001-10-12
This financial guidebook is not what it states it is. The author has written from her own point of view, and the content does not help the senior reader as it is directed to.
I would advise all Seniors not to purchase this book as you would be wasting your money and your time.
It may work for the more advanced and education Seniors, however those who cannot read in between the lines of financial jargon, should stay away from this book.

the strategy'll put you to sleep... soundly.......2000-07-01
Bill Staton's strategy is about as boring as the old Power Sweep of Lombardi's Green Bay, and USC's "Student Body Right" some decades ago...
It's also just as effective.
Finally, something that makes sense........1999-03-19
I have read more financial advice books than I care to count and this book was the one that finally made sense to me. I have been floundering around, investing here and there, without a feeling of actually knowing what I was doing. Mr. Staton's methods are a great comfort to new investors, especially those with limited funds. It takes the guesswork out of wondering whether you're investing in a solid company or one that will fold before you have a chance to make a profit. Mr. Staton lists hundreds of companies that have stood the test of time and you can feel comfortable investing in any one of them. I found his book to be easy to follow, with a lot of solid and practical advice. I feel as though I finally have a real investment plan. This book is a treat for long-term investors and for those who are new to the investing universe.
Move up to America's Finest.......1998-10-27
Bill Staton shows you how to say goodbye to the fund managers that cost you money each time they buy and sell in your mutual fund. Buy your own good stocks and hold them forever as Warren Buffett would tell you to do. Balance your portfolio each time you buy using Bill Staton's guidelines. A child can use this method, and Bill shows this it in some of his examples. Buy it and prosper.
Staton provides a simple, rational investment plan........1998-08-28
This book provided me with a rational approach to picking stocks. It avoids technical analysis, and focuses simply on companies with at least 10 years of increasing dividends OR earnings per share. My only criticism is the lack of explanation of how high vs low dividend stocks will affect performance. In other words, he says pick randomly from his universe, irrespective of PE or dividend, and expect to beat the S&P 500. However he does emphasize industry diversification, and regular reinvestments.
