        Book Description

The economic crisis of 1997 called East Asia's economic miracle into question and generated widespread criticism of the regions developmental models. However, the crisis did little to alter the growing economic integration of the region which is being forged through American, Japanese and Chinese firms who have created cross-border production networks - led by multinational corporations which span the entire value-chain in a number of industries. This book addresses the changing nature of high-tech industries in Asia, particularly in the electronics sector, where these networks are increasingly designed to foster and to exploit the regions highly heterogenous technology, skills and know-how.

            Book Description

Regionalism is of growing relevance to the political economy of Asia-Pacific. In the wake of the Asian financial crisis, this timely volume investigates in four different chapters the dynamics of Asian regionalism during the 1980s and 1990s. Specifically, it focuses on Japanese and Chinese business networks in Northeast and Southeast Asia and the effects of economic, monetary and financial policies on regional cooperation. Asian regionalism is an important factor that both complements and shapes corporate strategies and government policies in a globalizing economy.

                  Book Description

Chinese Big Business and the Wealth of Asian Nations examines the crucial contribution of Chinese business groups to the rapid growth of South-East Asia. This study examines major Chinese firms and their increasingly important networks in this era of regional interdependence and internationalization of production processes. It draws upon unprecedented empirical detail relating to Chinese firms, their growth patterns, joint ventures with foreign capital, and responses to technological change and competition and contributes to debates on economic networks, the economics of trus, and relations between business and the state in the global economy.

                    Book Description

This book examines how Chinese family and business networks, focused around activities such as revenue farming, including opium, the rice trade, and pawnbroking, and related legal and labour organization activities, were highly influential in the process of state formation in Malaya. It shows how Chinese family and business networks were flexible and dynamic, and were closely interlocked with economic and social structures, around which government, and states, developed. It considers the crucial role of wealth and power in the process of state formation, and challenges accepted views of Chinese ethnicity and migration.

                        Book Description

The study traces the economic and demographic history of a corner of China's southeast coast from the third to the thirteenth centuries, looking at the relationship between changes in the agrarian and urban economies of the area and their connections to the expanding role of domestic and foreign trade. It provides a previously unexplored perspective on the role of commercialized production and trade in a regional economy in the premodern era and demonstrates that trade was able to drive change in a premodern economy in a way that has not generally been recognized.

                          Book Description

As market competition replaces state regulation in many economic fields, competition policy has become an area of increasing significance. Against this background, Suzuki highlights the importance of the domestic political structure for competition policy. He does this through the comparative analysis of competition law reforms in Britain and Japan. He argues - controversially - that a country's domestic political structure should be considered a major factor in causing the reform of competition law, and rejects the established view that is necessarily a result of changes in international economic and political conditions.

You can see them cruising for Indian art in Santa Fe, waiting for Old Faithful at Yellowstone, or pausing for shrimp cocktails on San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf. The American West attracts vacationers of every stripe, who comb its varied landscapes for the ultimate trip. And for better or worse, those who come to see this multifaceted region have changed what they have come to see. Seeing and Being Seen explores the history of tourism in the American West and examines its effects on both the tourists and the places and people they visit. Scholars from the humanities, social sciences, and business-Patricia Nelson Limerick, Hal Rothman, and others-join government and National Park Service professionals to investigate the dilemmas that tourism poses for western communities, from economic and environmental questions to cultural change. The selections are organized around three broad topics: scholarly perceptions of tourism, tourists, and those toured upon; tourism in its historical context, including an assessment of its cultural impact on communities and on tourists themselves; and the history and impact of tourism on the West's national parks, with particular emphasis on efforts to maintain the delicate balance between natural preservation and public enjoyment. These essays cover the span of tourism history, from early-twentieth-century "See America First" campaigns to the problematic place of automobiles in national parks today. They also pay special attention to policy choices that the growth of tourism sometimes forces on communities, as towns try to bounce back from failed economies by capitalizing on an "Old West" image-or even, in the case of Kellogg, Idaho, "Old Bavarian." In response, the authors offer suggestions by which communities can begin to make rational choices about the role and place of tourism in their lives. Seeing and Being Seen is enlightening-and necessary-reading for scholars, policy makers, residents of the West, and even tourists themselves.

From Custer to Kerouac to Kaczynski, tourists in the West have left their mark ... and in many ways, the West has left its own indelible mark on them -- just ask Custer.

In 150 years of travel across the Big Empty (as pioneers called the Intermountain West) a few have stayed, but all began as passersby. Who are they and why do they come? Why do we want them to come? Where do they go? How can we make them spend more money? Why do we make fun of them? Those are just some of the questions asked and answered in a new anthology nurtured by the University of Colorado's Center of the American West.

"Seeing and Being Seen" explores the history of tourism in the American West, and examines its effect on both the tourists and the people and places they visit. Essayists from National Park Service historian David Louter to novelist Rudolfo Anaya ponder the various dilemmas posed by tourism for western communities, from economic and environmental questions to cultural change.

The book explains how some towns, such as Trinidad, Colo., have been reluctant to embrace tourism for fear of losing their culture, while others, like Burlington, Colo., look for ways to control -- and profit from -- the exploitation of local history and culture.

"Seeing and Being Seen" sprouted from a tourism colloquium sponsored by CU's Center for the New West in 1997. It is a good exploration of the industry by people whose job it is to analyze such things.

                              Book Description

Be IN THE KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

Doing business across borders is very different from doing business across town–subtle and not-so-subtle differences in attitudes and etiquette play a big role.

                              Did you know?
                              • Be on time! Germans are very time-conscious; if you’re late, you might be seen as irresponsible.
                              • You’re expected not to wash your car, mow your lawn, or otherwise disturb the peace on Sundays; it’s part of Germany’s mandatory quiet hours.
                              • If you don’t want to sound insincere, don’t use excessive compliments. Do you really love that blouse your coworker is wearing?

In the Know in Germany helps you:
                              • Fit right in by understanding local manners, etiquette, and behaviors
                              • Navigate through everyday life with tips for the whole family
                              • Get an insider’s perspective on the social and business environment

The book includes a FREE 60-minute CD with the key phrases you need to make a great impression.

                              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great book to prepare you for Germany! .......2006-06-05

The book does a great job explaining clearly and succintly the culture of Germany, identifying the do's and taboos in daily life and in business, and it also gives great advices. The book explains in details the procedures for almost anything that you would need in Germany providing up-to-date examples and names: tranportation options and regulations, financial services (it even tells you how and where to pay your bills), how to find a place to live in, what to expect in the business environment, and even the procedures and documents needed to bring your pet into Germany.

What I particularly liked about the book is that it gives advices based on different groups. If you are single, married, having troubling teenagers, or you are gay - the book tells you what to expect based on your situation and how to make the most out of your trip.

At the end of the book you will also find a section with useful phrases in German and a CD which could help you brush up your German pronunciation.

The book is great and I would higly recommend it to anyone planning to visit or live in Germany!

I have read several books on moving/living in Germany. Of those books, this one is the most comprehensive. It focuses on the nuts-and-bolts of the overseas move, including the various government agencies one must deal with, housing issues, utilities, and more. It's fairly upbeat but at the same time appears to provide a balanced view on the good and bad. Combined with "The Expert Expatriate," this book seems to cover all of the bases.

The book seems to have lots of information for UK citizens but little for US citizens. Caveat emptor, I guess, but I would've appreciated more than just token references to the particular difficulties of non-EU citizens trying to live in and/or find work in Germany. I think for UK citizens it's probably quite useful.

The content is otherwise fairly interesting and potentially useful, though grammatical errors and typos pervade the book (comma splices galore!).

I was recently at Nick Daws' website (writequickly.com) where it said:

Learn how Nick created two internationally best selling guides to living in Italy and Spain [and presumably Germany], without ever having visited the countries...

So, clearly, I wouldn't spend my money on this.

                                        5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource.......2004-03-11

My family spent the summer of 2002 traveling in Germany, lived in Mannheim August 2002 to April 2003, and then were in Berlin from May until September 2003. Mr. Daws' book was an excellent resource for us and we often referred to it. The advice on job-hunting, obtaining driving permits, residence visas, etc. was all top-notch. The advice in the book was very specific and where it was dated the general principles laid out were still quite applicable. I would highly recommend "Living and Working in Germany" in combination with "Culture Shock Germany".

First of all I would like to say that when I read jjmojo from PA review, I just laughed. I am sure he knows many Germans and finds them wonderful. However it is clear this person has not lived in Germany for any length of time. If, I am wrong perhaps it was in Berlin or Munich. I am living in Germany and have been for 4 years. I live in the south, outside a city and life is very much like america in 1950. The book is very accurate, people are very self centered and laugh at the expense of others. I have many times seen people needing help and no one except myself has offered assistance. Children are not taught to be nice, the people in this culture learn to look for themselves first and formost. It may be a nice place to visit but.......Like I said if you are going to live here, especially outside the big cities, read the book.

1 out of 5 stars This book is terrible!!!!.......2001-10-23

This book is so full of inaccurate observations of the German people as well as there society that it makes me sick. Over and over the author states how Germans have no sense of humor and how they are cold in there interactions with others in society. How inaccurate these statements are. Every German I have ever met is friendly, warm and fun loving! The author also talks about there way of living as if it was 1920. The only positive thing I got out of reading this book is phone numbers for government agencies, and conversions for Metric and Celsius. Don't read this book. Go to Germany instead and see how the German people are for real!

                                        Book Description

From "Asylrecht", through "Frauenpolitik", to "Zivildienst", this Student's Dictionary covers the key words of modern Germany. It offers detailed entries on contemporary German politics, economy, society and culture, providing a wealth of information and analysis. Compiled by a team of university specialists in German studies, the Dictionary has been designed for students taking courses on contemporary Germany, for those taking a "year out" in Germany, and for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of German affairs than that offered by traditional language dictionaries. The entries give authoritative and accessible information on contemporary terminology and issues, and encourage follow-up browsing after the initial search.

4 out of 5 stars a quick and comprehensive guide to German politics.......2001-01-03

I found this book quite helpful as a quick overview of German politics since 1945. Although this book is a dictionary, it is enjoyable to simply page through it randomly and read whatever entries interest you. This book will allow you to get a basic framwork of German politics on which you can hang new knowledge as you do further reading on Germany. Without wading through abstruse tomes you will be able to get an idea of what such heady topics as the "Historikerstreit" are about. This book is ideal for an advanced student of German and a must for students going abroad to a German university or exchange program. This book is not for those looking for a culture guide in the sense of info on art, cities and architecture.
