Borders, in particular this demarkation between the U.S. and Mexico, represent more than the separation of and relations between governments and their institutions, but also to clarify relations between and among people and ideas. This territorial line is truly globalized but remains stressed between the promise of liberation and the reality of oppression. Policy shifts, predictable moves, and unanticipated occurrences there have included border initiatives by the INS, the enactment of NAFTA, and the Mexican peso devaluation. Staudt's focus on the survival strategies, including strategies that circumvent either nation's laws and policies, undergird the informal economy. The political machinery of both the countries works to constrain these "quintessential free traders," as Staudt calls them, yet the residents counter national and international influences to build shelter and incomes, however meager.

For the reader interested in an analysis of the survival of people at the intersection of a first and third world country who are divided as much by racism as by nationalism, this study looks both at and beyond the social and economic aspects of survival.

My lil' dictionary and I.......2004-12-25

I'm a guy, ok? I got this insuppressible urge to become a Vegetarian and cook gourmet vegetarian cuisine. It could happen to anyone. But it happened to me. I have probably 15 veggie cookbooks and try to prepare at least three new recipes per week. I can't remember even once being stumped by some arcane ingredient or bizarre description with this life saving dictionary in hand! The phonetic pronunciation of most entries is very gratifying as well. What more is there to say? Except that I'm now thinner, smarter, faster, more virile, high blood pressure is gone and I'm crazier than when I was a carnivore! But that's off topic. Long live the revolution!

Well worth the money.......2004-10-13

If you need a quick reference guide to look up culinary terms, or techniques, this one is great for the money. The book is some what small, about 1" thick, and light paper is used, which makes this book VERY convenient unlike most references book that are overly burdensome.

I'm currently in culinary school and as a student, I use this book all the time; it has yet to dissapoint me! Quality work here. A must for any foodie

Great reference book for culinary careers........2003-09-03

This book contains not only English and French, but other languages from around the word. I am an student at the Las Vegas University studying for a four-year degree in culinary science. It's tough and you need a lot of guide books. Three I highly recommend is the Study Guide for Baking and Advance Baking. These books I found on Amazon.com and marketplace. They help me alot getting through my courses. Another tough course that involves a lot of science is Sanitation. The Study Guide for the National Servsafe Exam is also an excellent guide.

An excellent basic culinary reference book.......2002-07-26

This friendly volume is crisp, concise (tens of thousands of entries in just under 500 pages), and attractive. It is not only inexpensive, but possibly one of the best culinary dictionaries available for the home cook who simply wants a decent resource for occasional questions.

My basic test for a culinary reference book is to look up "falernum" (a by-product of rum distillation which is used as a flavoring in fruit desserts--sort of along the lines of grenadine). Well, "falernum" isn't in here, but so much other stuff is that I'm not complaining.

The pronunciations are a little iffy on foreign language terms, and the definition brevity is sometimes confusing (kiu is listed as "an ancient Chinese beer." OK. Does that make it a beer from ancient times, or a really old fermented brew that's currently available?). Still, these are minor quibbles for an admirably complete book.

Good reference book.......2002-02-27

This book has been very helpful to me. Unfortunately there have been a few words I tried to look up that weren't in there. Maybe their next edition will be more complete.

A Good Read!.......2001-02-24

..Author Lisa Kanarek does a fabulous job of organizing her ideas into useful categories. It reads as if the author and her editors decided that if the majority of home office workers could not use a secret, it would not make the book. The book's only glaring problem is minor: two tips are identical (numbers 29 and 72: create a Web site). Fortunately, Kanarek followed her own advice (Tip #102 "Always give more than expected"), so readers expecting 101 secrets will not feel shortchanged...our tip is that this book is required reading for anyone working from home.

This book is not only a comprehensive handbook for presenters, with detailed and thoughtful memos, checklists, tips and tools and questions for planning, action, surveys... It is also a masterpiece for effective communication, teaching and learning based on the author's synthesis of brain-compatible learning. "The brain is meaning driven." (p.3) Aligned with the stages of learning, Jensen proposes a seven-steps brain-friendly training model: 1. Neural history. 2. Learning environment. 3. Context for success. 4. Acquisition. 5. Elaboration. 6. Memory encoding. 7. Functional integration. The format of the book, is compatible to the brain's grasp and understanding, with "Key Topics" for each chapter, numerous key ideas on the margin and in the boxes, headings and bullets. Empower Yourself Financially.......2000-08-09

As a babyboomer and a single person, I am still trying to find my way
in my financial life. When I ran across this book in my local library,
I knew that it was for me.

Mary Ivins discusses finances from the
point of where they actually fit in the real world, and does so from a
spiritual point of view. She also includes many thoughts taken from
things that have happened in her personal life - things that motivated
her to take steps towards her own spiritual and financial
prosperity.

This is a "how to" book of the first order. At
the end of each chapter is a summery of the thoughts shared within
that chapter, and exercises for the reader to do to see how well they
understand what has been discussed.

Throughout the book are sample
forms that the reader may use as is or adopt to their own
circumstances. At the end of the book we find a glossary of financial
terms - those terms that many of use are unfamiliar with, and need to
know before we can take an active part in our financial lives.

I
truly enjoyed the discussion of where to place assets, and what the
difference in various investment opportunities means in the short and
the long run.

If you buy only one book this year to help you with
your finances, this is the one that I personally reccomend.

Mary Ivins' book is a heartlifting and inspiring "rags to riches" account of how it is possible for a women to pick herself up from the boot straps and build financial security with confidence.

The glossary of terms in this book is worth the price of the book alone and is one of the best reference tools for understanding the often times challenging and itimidating financial world to a novice such as myself.

Even though this book was written with a women's slant on seeking and obtaining financial security, it will be valued by anyone who realizes the importance of being able to acquire financial security for their peace of mind should they be faced with divorce, widowhood or retirement.

Can't Judge a Book by its Publisher.......2002-12-08

I am responding to the previous reviewer's disappointment with the book, given that it was published by Oxford U. The days when we could count of the big name university presses to publish only the finest are, sadly, past. It is frustrating not to have the reliable benchmarks. Word processing, the automated printing and publishing process, and the general decline of academic standards - whatever the reasons, we are being swamped with second and third rate monographs from all quarters.

A Disappointment.......2001-04-12

These authors published two informative articles about TIAA-CREF in a professional journal in 1997 and 1998. Although the articles were intended for estate planners, they can be understood by a lay person who reads them carefully. I expected this book to present the substance of the articles in a more accessible way. It does not. Apart from the section on estate planning, it contains little information not obtainable directly from TIAA-CREF. It shows signs of having been written with haste. It is poorly edited (surprising for Oxford University Press) and is in places inconsistent and unclear. The book is a disappointment.
