      I don't disagree with the negative reviews this book's gotten, but I think it needs elaboration. If you've never run (or started) a small business before, this is an -okay- intro to various concepts you'll need. Better has been published since 1994, & there's almost no depth. To add insult, of the 243 pages only 60 really have anything to do with starting a coffee/tea retail operation. If you're thinking of getting this, save your money & read _Start & Run a Coffee Bar_ (Matzen & Harrison), which makes an effort to actually address vital stuff like sanitation & how to make a decent espresso.

      Not bad, though I found others a bit better. It is a bit difficult to read some of the information and equate that to practical use. However, the section on teas is excellent, Not being a tea drinker, I found that helpful.

      The first line of the preface should tell you everything you need to know about this book: "Start Your Own Coffee and Tea Store is the result of many hours of in-depth research into the mail order industry."

      Uhh... okay. You'll quickly discover that this is a generic book tweaked just a bit for the coffee business. You'll find anecdotes about carpenters, wildly varying numbers about the profitability of this business, and such sage advice as, "Although it is still possible to rent telephones through certain telephone companies, the best bet is to buy your own. They are inexpensive, come in a variety of styles and colors, and are generally covered by a warranty."

      The information in here is dated (1994) and, given the inconsistencies of dollar figures from chapter to chapter, I have no idea if it was ever accurate. Despite the listing in Amazon.com, nobody had the courage to even sign their name to this book -- there's no author listed anywhere, neither on the cover nor anywhere inside.

      I'm planning to return this book, if I can. Given that there were some marks in it when I purchased it, I'm pretty sure someone else had bought and returned it before me.

          Read this on the recommendation of an exceptional Materials Manager. While the format does take a little longer to get to the heart of non-linear solutions, the author provides a sense of what really separates good business practices from poor business practices, exceptional people from average people and the hunters from the hunted. The history that is included puts into perspective not just what you do to improve the business, but how to go about it (or how others have gone about it). Another important piece of information for the reader is that, what have been historic breakthroughs were arrived at through a combination of progressive thinking, and trial and error. It's not because a brilliant light just appeared. Highly recommend this book.

          Sound ideas if you don't mind plowing through all of the stuff and fluff. The author spent way too much time trying to make his points compelling by the use of awkward and fanciful historical connections. Oh, and the liberal use of Capitalization To Play An Idea Up As A Fundamental Law Of The Universe gets annoying pretty quick.

          I recommend reading "Lean Thinking" instead. You'll get all of the same important concepts without the need for literary corn-husking.

          Way too much meat for one reading. The idea of the non-linear solution merits right up there as one of the fundamentals of modern world-class manufacturing. The non-linear solution is, among other things, the idea that you can't keep trying to improve a bad system. Fundamental, dramatic change is often necessary to keep from becoming one of the hunted. Do you see your company in any of these stories? Often hunters become hunted and don't know it until it is too late. One of the very best works available today. Read it and study it. The fantasy story that ties the book together is original and well done. As much a page turner as anything by Tom Clancy.

          This book is just amazing, since it explains how American companies thought of themselves to be the best of the best, and saw no competition on the asian companies. Later on, in the late seventies and early eighties, american companies began a desperate rush to improve. It is written in a way that may remind you of Ellie GOldratt's "The goal". This book tells you what to do, but not how to, which I found to be one of it's biggest assets, because there is no better way to learn something, than doing it by yourself. It is a must to read by anyone who is on the upper levels of managemnet in a company, it will help you develop a new vision of what is the purpose of having a mangement on an agressive company.

            Unless you are in a hurry to get prepared for interviewing with the Firm, this book is not a necessity. If you are willing to spend several hrs searching the Net, you can find 90% of the information the book contains. And the missing 10% do not seem that critical to me.

            The bottom line -- if you have done your homework, the book will only confirm that for $25.

            Btw, Vaultreports web site is cool. And it's free :-)

            Vault has done a good job of researching the story at McKinsey. I found the Vaults more introspective than their Wet Feet Press counterparts.

            If you're a career changer, this is good reading to prep for interviews.

            (BTW - I did my summer internship at McKinsey and returned their full-time after Wharton, so I'm fairly well-equipped to say that I think Vault was on target.)

              Like many people, I've been trying to "get rich" for quite some time. I've tried many things and it has never seemed to work out. I've blamed everything and everyone (including myself) at various times. Wealth Mentality forces you to take a long, hard look in the mirror to find out if your way of thinking is the true culprit.               "Wealth Mentality: Program Yourself to Get and Keep the Wealth You Want" is a book about the mental attitudes that are required in order to define and accumulate wealth. The definition of wealth can be quite different between different people. For one it might be monetary riches, for another it might be the free time and money to persue goals, and for another person it might be something entirely different.

              The author points out that some people seem to acquire wealth easily while others seem to be continually chasing wealth without ever actually acquiring any. The difference between those that are successful and those that are not is often their mental attitude. Is it enough to be positive? Is it enough to regularly research options? The author argues that these things are not enough. It requires a mentality that leaves the person receptive to opportunities as they come along and able to act on those opportunities. Throughout the book the author teaches how to change your belief system and program yourself to automatically become aware of opportunities as they come along, how to maintain that system, and how to develop a plan to actually move toward your goals.

              While it does not cover any aspect of finance, investing or similar parts of wealth generation, it is a very good book on the mentality required as a precursor to getting and keeping wealth.

              In an ocean of business books, Beyond e stands out as a prize catch. Too often, today's "gurus" write books that trumpet their personal accomplishments conveniently leaving out practical applications to specific business category needs. If we want real solutions, the cost raises from a $25 book to $25,000 per day consultation fee. Steve Diorio gives it all away in his book. Beyond e can also be called beyond best practices. He is the one guru I would invite to help my organization apply new technologies to our sales and marketing efforts. Read the book, pick up the phone and give him a call.

              Steve Diorio has written a meaty and relevant book about selling technologies. In an age when there is so much E hype and fluff that only serves to confuse, we needed a book that was born from practical, everyday consulting and research in the offices of the best companies. The salient ideas about which Mr. Diorio expounds are absolutely critical for growth and profit. They carry with them an imperative that to ignore the protocols of this newest e technology will lead to peril and a fatal falling behind the power curve.

              I read the excellent reviews in which professors recommended Beyond E. They were impressive. But, this book was written for executives and senior managers who have the very life of their corporations in the palm of their hands. It is obvious that Mr. Diorio has spent considerable time with his clients and sweat blood with them to achieve the best e-practices in marketing, promotion and selling.

              I believe the book is about stretching the IT and Internet sales budgets so that busineses can grow at an accellerated rate. The book Beyond E is truly futuristic because it clearly outlines what the best companies have been doing and what the leaders of tomorrow (the followers of our leaders today) will be doing in late 2002 and in 2003. The blueprint is drawn up, the creation of dynamic selling technologies has been built, but, sadly, few understand it, and even fewer have actually implemented it. Companies like Dell Computer, IBM, Charles Swab, Amazon and e-Bay are only a few of these futuristic leaders that Mr. Diorio writes about. They "get it". How long will it take others? Mr. Diorio lays out in detail what needs to be done right now.

              Mr. Diorio is like a drum major for executives to immediately order "the engineering of sustainable technology innovations into the sales and marketing process", to quote Stve Diorio. The traditional software analysts and programmers in companies are not prepared for the accelerated rate at which customer service and marketing creativity must be coded to stay abreast of changing customer needs and wants.

              It is about knowing the mind of the customer and changing systems at every level of the company so there can be real-time change. I got a distinct sense of urgency in reading the book. As a management consultant, I now feel driven to alert my clients that "getting it" is urgently critical. Steve Diorio virtually screams out at us that positive results can be realized only from the implementation right now of dynamic marketing, selling and customer service e-systems.

              Mr. Diorio understands how important all of these ideas are in order to create cutting edge business models and viable ways to turn IT chaos into order and opportunity. I am glad I read the book. I've recommended it to many of my clients and colleagues.

              Having taught a variety of marketing courses at the undergraduate, graduate and executive levels, I am always looking for books that present the ways in which new technology (and the Internet in particular) are affecting market relationships. Often these texts are full of exaggerrated "war stories" or can be easily summarized into a few general points. Steve Diorio's book, in contrast, is current, meaty and well substantiated. He not only provides several examples of recent successes and failures but synthesizes this new information into the age old framework of serving the customer and firm by adding value to both. I highly recommend this book to any marketing professional as well as any professor who wishes to bring their marketing strategy or course content into the 21st century.

              Finally a book that doesn't force-feed you candy-coated customer experience stories that are interesting but don't tell us anything we do not already know.

              Having read most of the more celebrated sales and marketing books of the last decade, this one actually has some substance behind it. I was thoroughly impressed by the amount of research and experience that stands behind this book. Instead of providing a few nice anecdotal cases about customer-centricity or customer loyalty, this book provides a comprehensive view of how technology is changing sales and marketing practices throughout an organization and across all brands. Most importantly, it provides you with actionable insights into modern sales and marketing best practices.

              If you have been as frustrated as I have with the superficiality of recent sales and marketing books, then you should definitely give this one a try.

              Steve Diorio, outlines in 12 ways how technology is transforming the way the customer and the company will interact in the future. He has done an outstanding job of making sense out of all the e hype over the last three years and makes clear what works and what fails as e business becomes more of a digital business strategy. I highly recommend his book to any executive that is thinking about building a sustainable business strategy.
