Okay for a limited audience, but what about the rest of it?.......2005-05-27
This book offers helpful suggestions for filing all kinds of paper, but it is targeted toward writers and doesn't discuss non-paper information like Web sites and email.
ok but..........2005-04-05
uneccesarily informative. read, pat doriff's, 'file don't pile' on filing alone. it's much better. this guide has too much confusing info. don't buy.
The Best File Organization Book.......2002-09-14
I just bought a bunch of books on file organization (e.g. Hemphill, Morgenstern, Kate Kelly and Melinda Mitchell) and this was by far the best. Why? All the other books concentrated on giving general advice and the motivational aspects of getting organized. Dorff's book is really a specific "how to" book, giving you a step-by-step procedure for designing, creating and maintaining a file system.
The system seems a little intimidating at first; my wife just about laughed me out of the house when I described it to her. But I have completely redone my office files and my home filing system using her method and it works!
I wish she would update her book and include a more computer based approach. Here are my suggested modifications based on having implemented it twice:
1. Start by typing all your folder subjects into the 2nd column of an Excel spreadsheet. Then it is easy to sort them alphabetically.
2. Do everything A-Z and don't worry about using the Prefix Method. If you want to keep a bunch of folders together, just use more than one letter when you create the identifiers in column 1 of your spreadsheet. e.g. MAN101, MAN102 for all your product manuals. Then sort by column 1. In a way, you are creating a "prefix" system within the overall alphabetical system. I moved all my TRR (Travel and Recreation) folders to a different location, but I only have to deal with a single spreadsheet.
3. The 3rd and 4th columns of your spreadsheet are the "see also" and "see" additions to the index that make it work so well
4. In addition to the numbers, add the subject to the folder tabs. Most of the time, I don't want to bother looking in the index. Also, I created a bunch of tables within Word that are just the right size to fit into the plastic tabs. Buy multcolored card stock at your local OfficeMax and you can now created color coded tabs.
5. Print out your excel spreadsheet as your index, leaving some blank rows between each letter, e.g. A101,A102,A103, 3 blank rows, B101, etc. This way you pencil in additions without messing with the spreadsheet.
The system is very easy to manage, once you get it set up. It is flexible and should work for almost any purpose. Her chapter on setting up a way of dealing with "pending" papers is priceless. Even my wife adopted that method to deal with all the papers that she deals with as an elementary school teacher.
If you already have a pretty good filing system that seems to work well for you, just use Pat's system to create an index for it. It shouldn't take more than an few hours to enter all of your existing file subjects into the spreadsheet. Then just create the numbering system and the cross referencing columns.
Every person who has come into my office after implementing this system has commented on how much bigger my office looks with all the piles of papers gone.
MESSIES, sit up and pay attention!.......1996-05-25
If you save clippings and articles that you know will some day be important, then can't remember where you filed them, this is the book for you. If you get a letter from an editor that mentions two different book proposals or manuscripts and you don't want to run to the copy store to make a photocopy, and can't decide which of the two files to stick the letter into, this book is for you. If you have stacks of paper on your desk and on your floor and on your couch, or even on your bed, stacks which you someday intend to file, this book is for you. This book is a hands-on approach to managing the paper flow of anyone who does any kind of writing. In seconds you will be able to put your hands on that elusive clipping that told about the man who invented synthetic testicles for his male dog, because the dog looked embarrassed when he came home from being neutered. Trust me, you will be able to find it! If you're truly a messie, the only difficult part involved in using this book will be remembering where you placed this fabulously-helpful book. But, once you've found it again and followed its suggestions, you won't even have that problem anymore.

The culinary companion to the Knopf Paris book.......2003-01-21
If you read my review of the general Paris book, you know that I think it is the best, but the restaraunt/hotel information in the back of that book is dated, well here is the fix for that. Unfortunately I only had this book on one trip, my last, over the pond, however if you wanted to have dinner at a new and fascinating place every afternoon and night, this is what to use. My mom, an art deco fan, used this book to find the perfect restaraunt. I used it to find a restaraunt built into a 1000 year old basement, not to mention fois gras vendors! This book is worth every penny, as so much in Paris revolves around meals, and the meals and folks in the restaraunts are so interesting, you in fact, need this book. While large portions of France have lost their Catholicism, they still have one universal religion: FOOD! Pick this book up, a Bible!
Great Guide to Historical Restaurants.......2002-09-22
I like the Knopf Guides in general for their luxurious illustrations, diagrams and their tangental information. In this guide such things as typical menus, historical data, elaborate diagrams (such as the fold out of Train Bleu) and literary references make it more than a guide indeed it properly sits on the nightstand as grist for exciting dreams of historical Parisian Gastronomy.
You will get hungry just reading it!.......1999-03-07
Richly illustrated book including descriptions of famous restaraunts as well as the history of the Paris restaurant scene.
I am leaving for France again this week and I can hardly put the book down.

Great guide for galleries.......2007-06-07
Very useful guide, especially for galleries and places of interest. Didn't use it for housing and not much for food.
KNOPF GUIDE TO PARIS.......2007-01-21
I love these Knopf guides, they are really beautiful little books and they are chocked full of information, granted they are not a quick guide, but if want indepth information and some deep research on Paris, then I highly recommend this guide, read it before you go to Paris, it will make the trip all the more enjoyable. Bon Voyage.
Like Going There Again-Superb.......2005-07-09
In 1987 I visited paris for the first time. When I purchased this guide it was like going there many times over. It is truely one of the best books I have ever purchased. It is an art guide, history book, architecture study, travel guide and more.
What more could there be? This is an excellent reference all around. Its easy to research a novel from this tome alone. I felt that I stepped off a plane and had an excellent english speaking tour guide with me.
I naturally proceeded to get the rest of the set of travel guides. It was better than all the encyclopedias I had in school. The benefit of this series is that unless the world changes dramatically, the travel guides will not go out of style of years to come.
This is the sigle best general Paris guidbook available.......2003-01-21
No I do not work for the publisher, but as someone who will spend 4 months planning 14 days away. I must say if I could bring only one book, this would be it. I have used it on every trip to Paris, and have not been led wrong by it. The book touches upon almost every conceivable church, museum, square, fountain, etc. that is within the City proper. If you were to study this book for 2 weeks with a larger Michelin map of the City,(one that is entirely on one looseleaf page, you could put the book down and completely navigate around the City on your own and find everything. Yes it is that good and well thought out. The ultimate writers of the guidebook deserve 'props' for how they did the book. I like the Knopf guides in general, but this one is the best.
Some caveats:
1. The hotel and restaraunt section IN THIS BOOK, in the back is too short and dated. The first and only time I booked a hotel in the back of a Knopf guidebook was in Venice and I GOT BURNED BAD! Unless you are talking about something world renown, like the Crillon, or the Cipriani in Venice, use another guidebook! For Paris, Cheap Sleeps/Cheap Eats has never done me wrong. In fact they have been uncommonly good.
2. There are a lot of tricks for getting around the City, getting into museums, etc. You won't find them in this book, you are going to have to go to Rick Steves for that!
3. The guidebook cant tell you what is best to see in this City, although it is not the Knopf guidebooks fault. It is the fault of the City of Paris. There is so much in that City, if you step off the plane and honestly look around, your head will spin, and perhaps you will start a lifelong love affair with it, as probably millions of others have. I don't think I have ever been happier, or more content, then sitting around drinking wine and eating frites somewhere in the Latin Quarter. Enjoy yourself and relax, the way the U.S. and the world is going, you may not get back there for a long long time.
Must Have Book.......2002-07-20
The trouble with most travel books is that if you don't have the most recent edition, the information is probably out of date. The beauty of this book on Paris is that there is information on the culture, the cuisine, the history, the art, with a small, very small section on hotels and restaurants. This is not just a great book to prepare you for your trip to Paris, this is a book for a student of the city.
Book Description
Control. Jealousy. Mistrust. Intimidation. Although rarely recognized as such, these behaviors can be major occupational hazards. When negative energy pervades our workplace, productivity and creativity are replaced with isolation and insecurity. Cultivating personal growth in such a setting may be challenging, but it is not impossible. Uplifting daily meditations from workplace psychologist Marilyn J. Mason assure us that-regardless of work site, salary, status, or job title-we need not sacrifice our spiritual health for our work life.
Customer Reviews:
Strongly recommended for students of personal spirituality.......2001-12-14
In Igniting The Spirit At Work: Daily Reflections, corporate psychologist and training director Marilyn Mason provides the reader with a pocket-sized compendium of daily reflections and inspiring quotations from a variety of sources ranging from Ralph Waldo Emerson to Marie Curie. Strongly recommended for students of personal spirituality and anyone seeking emotional self-improvement, Igniting The Spirit At Work is an invaluable reference packed with a special wisdom designed to promote mental and emotional well-being within the context of today's stressful and often confusing workplace environment.
Bridging the Gap between Intention and Effort.......2001-11-15
Igniting the Spirit at Work is a joy to read. Mason incorporates stories, proverbs, stimulating quotes, and her own experiences into the mix she creates for each day of the year, and ends each day with an affirmation designed to ignite the spirit. She does so in ways that stimulate creative exploration and dialogue. Here are some fun ways to bring this book into your life: read about the birthdays of people who matter to you and think about their relationship with you in the context of that day's message; think about the last day you would have characterized as a real "opportunity for growth" and see what awaits you on that day's page; search your calendar for upcoming challenging events, meetings with difficult people,or high pressure deadlines, and then read that day's message as the catalyst that sparks your imagination, soothes your tired mind or gives your heart a moment of healing warmth.
Page Turner.......2001-11-10
A book of its times, Igniting the Spirit at Work recognizes that our best ideas very often come from a quotation or story or comment that intrigues us. Marilyn Mason's series of single-page reflections, one for each day, is like an companion who stimulates our minds and spirits.
I like the easy format -- a thought per page -- since it suits my tendency at the moment to pause, however briefly, and to center my attention on something outside the headlines and the immediate demands of the day. I find myself perusing this book in different ways, sometimes by day, sometimes by randomly selecting a few pages and sometimes by stopping at the subjects at the top of each page that catch my eye.
Good book.
Working on Purpose!.......2001-11-04
In the aftermath of September 11th, all of us were forced to think hard and think deeply-about what matters in our lives, about the way we work. When confronted by a tragedy this immense, matters of work can seem trivial. But the more I thought about this tragedy, the more issuse of work and purpose became not trivial, but core. IGNITING THE SPIRIT AT WORK awakens us each and every day to work on purpose. It is a positive way to reaffirm the belief that there is good work in all of us, daily!
Marilyn Mason has done it again!.......2001-10-31
Like all of her books,Igniting the Spirit at Work, is a work of emmense inspiration and wisdom. She has created daily reflections to remind us of who we REALLY are, why we are HERE and WHAT we are to do with our lives. I bought this book last night after hearing her book reading, now I know what I'll be giving for gifts this holiday season to my colleagues & clients!!!

Wonderful collection of quotes and comments.......1998-06-18
Dr. Richey has put together a wonderful collection of thoughts and quotes which can and should be used by anyone who facilitates, or participates in, meetings. The phrases are organized by topic and are easy to draw upon when you'd like to emphasize a point, create a laugh, or cause a group to go, "Hmm...". I like to use them in all the meetings I facilitate for our company.
