Book Description
India and the IT Revolution explores the contemporary emergence of cosmopolitan, high-tech India as marking the arrival of a truly global cyberculture. It argues against the notion that globalization is a process of "Westernization," which radiates out unilaterally from the core, imposing itself upon a passive, backward periphery. Instead, it conceives of global culture as a dynamic, innovative network, which proceeds primarily from its edges.
Customer Reviews:
Steven Forth.......2006-02-10
India is emerging as the most important provider of IT in the world, the Indian IT industry today is where the Japanese automotive industry was in 1960 - the core people, companies, practices and educational institutions that will change our world are in place.
This book is the best introduction I have found to the Indian IT industry (I have several others on order) and it makes a good companion to India Unbound by Gurcharan Das and The Argumentative Indian by Amartya Sen.
The strength of this book is that it covers cultural, political and business issues. One needs an appreciation for all three to understand just how massive the change we are seeing in India really is. The book has good review chapters on India's evolution from the Raj, to the License Raj, to the reforms of 1991. There are some interesting thoughts on the history and role of English in India and at the end of the book there is a fascinating chapter on the role that the Indian invention of the number zero plays in the marketing of India as a center for IT. Her thoughts on the role of the periphery in cultural innovation are import valuable, as are the comments on the importance of third-world markets to disruptive technologies.
The various flavors in the book are not always well integrated. The author could probably have thought about this book, read more deeply, and met more people before writing, but the book is timely. The author now lives part of the year in Shanghai (according to the blurb), so we can expect more valuable books from her in the future.
The book does not cover a number of key areas, which I note here so that other authors can explore these and provide us with some books.
The author quotes an Indian executive as saying that India has innovated in the area of software process rather than core algorithms, coding or products. Possibly true. India has done an excellent job implementing the SEI CMM (Software Engineering Institute Capability Maturity Model) and in using UML (the Unified Modeling Language). The nature of India's process innovations and the role that CMM and UML play needs to be better understood. A parallel could be the role that Deming and quality management played in the Japanese automobile industry.
It is hard to get a real feeling for the people in the industry. We need a book of interviews with the key players in the India IT industry.
Last year I was at a strategic think tank with a Fortune 50 company. The company's management coach attended and was from Bangalore. She had some very interesting thoughts on the impact the IT industry has had on the local culture and the relationships between parents and children, especially young women. An investigation of the social and cultural implications of the IT revolution for India would also make a good book.
Book Description
The Netherlands is a thriving transportation hub for Europe, and a booming center for banking and energy sectors, and other innovative industries. Thousands of expatriate executives and their families are transferred to Holland annually; and hundreds of thousands of visitors come on business.
People from all corners of the globe come into contact with Dutch colleagues and contacts, both in the Netherlands and in their own countries. They all have to "deal with the Dutch," and although the Dutch are becoming more and more cosmopolitan, aspects of their character and behavior still surprise many people.
For instance, the directness of the Dutch, their critical attitudes, and sometimes slow decision-making processes are some of the characteristics that foreigners notice immediately, and may find frustrating. While the Dutch may drive a hard bargain, once agreement has been reached, their word is their bond. They are also noted for their thoroughness, and their energy and ingenuity in discovering and exploiting new business opportunities.
Expatriates working in the Netherlands point out that it is the underlying values and norms of the Dutch that puzzle them most and sometimes irritate them.
For anyone traveling to the Netherlands on business, to live and work in the country, or for anyone who may have regular contact with the Dutch abroad, this unique book - written by a Dutch author - will ensure more effective and enjoyable business and social relations.
This new edition both follows the first in covering Dutch values and norms, and presents an up-dated picture of the latest economic, social and cultural changes in the country.
Customer Reviews:
a mirror for Dutch abroad.......2004-06-28
Most books on cultural stereotypes try to be funny. Often jokes work only for those already in the know, or worse, they are misleading to those who aren't.
Aimed at expats and others working with the Dutch, Mr Vossestein has written a serious book. The goal is to inform, not to get cheap laughs (though many of the anecdotes from foreigners interacting with the Dutch are quite entertaining).
Perhaps the greatest value of this book is as a mirror for Dutch travelling abroad. After all, understanding other people's culture starts with understanding your own. This book should be compulsory reading for all Dutch expats.
Please reprint this excellent book.......2000-08-23
This is the best introduction to Dutch business culture available. It is uncluttered, and makes connections between different aspects of Dutch behaviour to develop a broad picture suitable for business people from any background.
A bridge connecting two cultures.......2000-05-08
As a Dutch-American cross-cultural trainer I have read the gamut of literature dealing with this subject. Mr. Vossestein's 'Dealing with the Dutch' is the most concise, clearly written book on the subject. The book's non-judgemental approach gives future immigrants to the Netherlands a thorough understanding of and a simple guide line to life in this fascinating land by the sea.
Book Description
It's compact size and quick use format make it easy for any business professional to find the answers they need.

Excellent Reference to Keep at Your Desk.......2007-05-13
I keep the "One-Minute Pocket Bible for the Business Professional" at my desk at work. Whenever I have a situation that I feel that I need God's word on, I can turn to that subject in the book, and read multiple verses relating to it. It helps me keep my peace of mind, and guide me in the right direction, as I rely on The Lord and His Word!
My co-worker liked it so much, that I bought a copy for him, as well.

Book Description
You really want the job, but the first hurdle is a big one - how to decipher the job ad and make yourself sound like just what the employer is looking for. But it's not easy: what does "must have integrity" actually mean in concrete terms? Or "able to initiate change"? And how do you ideally demonstrate that you've got it?
Having interpreted over 75 of the most frequent job requirements, this book explains how you can demonstrate that you have what the employer is looking for. Recruitment ads seem to have a language all their own. The people who write them know what they are looking for, but do you? Help is at hand. The Successful Candidate translates recruitment-speak back into plain English, so you can find out what it is that employers really want.

Customer Reviews:
Great overview. It was really enlightening.......2007-10-03
I moved to US 7 years ago, so all this stuff on retirement plans, mortgages, investments, was a big cloud of information to me. Very slowly I started learning about finances reading articles over the internet. When I got this book, I couldn't stop reading it. It gave me a great overview of how to put my financial life together. It is very easy to read. Yes, it's not the solution to all your financial problems, but it's a great overview with very enlightening information.
The only thing I didn't find details about was 457 retirement plans (even though it talks about others). That's the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars.
A workbook for early-career savers.......2006-08-29
Books like Beth Kobliner's have to earn their place on your bookshelf. After all, these days plenty of personal finance advice is available for free on the Internet. That said, this book is a wise investment for early-career professionals who would like advice about getting out of debt. Although its guidance is solid-if-predictable, it is well-researched and straightforwardly written. Kobliner provides an authoritative "further reading" list for those who want to delve deeper into how to get their finances on an even keel. This book does not promise to make you rich overnight, and it doesn't exactly qualify as a page-turner, but it lends a helping hand. We recommend it to young people whose financial life is just a bit too exciting.
Great for the ignorant.......2005-08-30
I wish I had this book when I was 19 and applying for credit cards. This book has great information in understandable terms for those who are beginning their financial journeys in life from opening bank accounts to buying homes. It also provides good stories as examples to explain some concepts that are more difficult to grasp, especially for those who are not financially savvy (like me). I will be giving this to my 19 year old brother so that he can be smarter about money than i was at his age (I'm 25).
Excellent Resource.......2005-08-09
I have given this book to over 8 people. Most of which were in the 20-25 year old range. This book covers so many topics that most people simply know very little about that ends up hurting them financially. I highly recommend this book to anyone. I actually keep copies on hand in case I meet someone new.
Very basic and understandable book.......2005-05-04
Although It is a bit out-dated, still very good for learning the concepts of finance.
("Everything with .com is a hit!!!!" not a good prognosis Mrs. Kobliner)

Affiliate Millions
For more than a decade, the Internet has allowed people to make substantial amounts of money on both a full-time and part-time basis. Today, with even more online opportunities available than ever before, you can achieve a level of financial success that most people only dream about-and in Affiliate Millions, author Anthony Borelli will show you how.
With the help of coauthor Greg Holden, Borelli will show you how to make thousands, and eventually tens of thousands, of dollars each month through the process of paid search marketing and affiliate advertising. Along the way, they'll also share the secrets to mastering this often-overlooked strategy and provide you with the tools and techniques needed to maximize your potential returns.
Since making one million dollars through paid search marketing and affiliate advertising in his first full year of operations, Anthony Borelli has never looked back. Now, he wants to help you do the same. Filled with in-depth insights and practical advice, Affiliate Millions will introduce you to this profitable endeavor and show you how to make it work for you.
Customer Reviews:
Technique but no cookie.......2007-10-19
As someone who has spent over a decade on the Internet, I understand the fundamentals of the building of a tool or the utilization of a tool that can be used to generate money online. If you understand this too, then skip this one.
This book is for the complete novice. BUT if that novice buys it, they will regret it because they will spend hours and hours toiling to get to an expert level of understanding on how to build and utilize a system such as this and then be faced with the same outcome I was.
There is absolutely no recommendation for products and services that do well in this environment. All of the check copies posted in the book were dated from 2005 which most folks know was the hay-day of the search marketplace and literally was the first year in existence for the pay-per-click marketplace. Today's marketplace, especially in the affiliate realm, is extremely more competitive largely because of books like this. There was no effort expended in addressing this competitive pressure and the resulting gap reduction between affiliate commission and PPC bids.
At the end of the day, folks, there are no easy millions. You must be ahead of a trend like Mr. Borelli, to exploit such an opportunity. Once the rest of the world has caught up, the only thing you can hope to do is ... you guessed it ... sell a book to teach others how to do it.
Basic tools for the online gold rush.......2007-09-06
My experience was similar to that of "gordo the lordo." Plenty of clicks but just a few orders. Getting clicks isn't hard. What kind of clicks? That's the $1,000,000 question.
As a search engine advertiser, your task is to capture the clicks of consumers who have made a buying decision or are very close. These clicks will make money for you. The clicks of people who are "just browsing" will cost you money. You have to be a student of online search behavior.
You capture money-making clicks by finding highly relevant keywords and writing focused ads. How hard can it be? Get your ads up and running, tweak them, and watch the money roll in. You only need basic English skills and common sense. A degree in advertising or English is not going to help.
I would encourage anyone to try it because you may discover that you have the knack. By spending $500 or so, you should be able to get an idea how well you might do. Don't make the mistake I made, which was to let my ads capture several hundred clicks without getting any orders. I kept thinking "the orders will kick in." They didn't. Stop your ads after 200-300 clicks and wait for results. (Even 50 clicks are too many with retail sites.) You can either tweak the ad (if it's close to break-even) or abandon it and try something else. Tweaking wouldn't have helped my ads, which earned pennies for every dollar spent on clicks.
You are playing the keyword market on Google. Some keywords sell for $20 per click and more. Search engine advertisers don't get caught up in keyword "bubbles." They are only after potent "value" keywords that sell for 25 cents or less.
The keyword market is like a gold rush. Everywhere you look the ground is torn up by hordes of stampeding prospectors. You wander far and wide hoping to find a stone that hasn't been turned. How many thousands of other guys are out there trying the same thing? Good luck.
You never know. You might have the knack. Affiliate Millions gives you everything you need to know to get started. When I joined my first affiliate program and set up my first ads, I had the book open and followed it not step-by-step but word-for-word. It's just the kind of "excruciating" detail a beginner needs.
Mr. Borelli explains how to evaluate the earnings potential of an affiliate program. The profit, or course, depends on your revenue per click. An adgroup for $20 books may not be the way to go.
Should you actually make money, there is a chapter on campaign finance. You have to manage your cash flow to optimize performance. If another book on online advertising has this kind of chapter, I haven't seen it.
Mr. Borelli has set up the Affiliate Millions website for "prospectors." The only item listed for sale is the book. There is a free monthly newsletter. There are no ads. Mr. Borelli answers questions on the site's discussion board. If you are at all familiar with the "get rich online" racket you know how exceptional this is. Such sites are usually crammed with ads and have little useful information.
Mr. Borelli's advice is a bit sketchy and vague. That's because it has to be. If Mr. Borelli were to disclose his winning formula, everyone would copy him and he would be out of business within hours. All he can do is point people in right direction. Within that proviso, he provides clear and valuable information.
Mr. Borelli makes no promises that prospectors will get rich. He merely suggests that it is possible. He ends the opening chapter with "Take it step-by-step and read the chapters that follow, and you'll stand a good chance of becoming an Affiliate Millionaire yourself." If he starts the book by saying your chances are practically nil, no one will continue reading.
Like "gordo," I'm amazed that anyone could make millions at this. A million dollars in a year is $2,700 a day. You would have to consider yourself pretty successful with $2,700 a day in SALES, never mind commissions. You would have to strike it rich with multiple million-dollar campaigns. You would have to come up with new ones all the time.
Think of the millions in revenue Mr. Borelli is generating for the companies he advertises for. They should throw a party for him.
Didn't work for me.......2007-08-21
I tried the principles in this book. I set up some ads for a variety of products and different companies through Commission Junction and was, at first, delighted that I was getting a good amount of clicks. I was confident the ads were good enough because of some experience I've had in the past writing copy.
However, after over 250 clicks to major websites that boasted a large earnings per click, I got one sale and a large $ loss. The ads were good enough to catch the people's attention, but no one was buying.
I think this is a tough way to go at it. A website might be the better way to go. I am amazed that anyone could make any money doing this, never mind millions.
Direct and Immediately Useful.......2007-07-24
I was seeking a detailed, practical and thorough "how-to" approach to build internet-based revenue. This book filled the bill. It covered all key facets of the approach - particularly helpful for a layperson - as well as for someone with web-based experience (as am I). I have yet to test the specific recommendations. The book was solid.
Basic start but could leave you broke.........2007-07-12
Its true that money can be made by signing up for affiliate programs and marketing them on pay per click search engines. However, its possible to lose a great deal of money and this book doesn't do a good enough job helping people calculate the risks. For example, the author indicates he markets Amazon products. Amazon on its basic associate program pays 4%. A $20.00 book pays a comission of .80 cents. But in pay per click advertising a marketer can pay 30, 40 cents and even a dollar depending on the keywords. In a test marketing the new Harry Potter book (book 5) I spent over 9.00 in ppc ads that resulted in 4 sales. The click thru to sale was 13%... which isn't bad. The point is, I earned only about $2, but spent over $9.00 to earn it (a loss of $7.00). The author doesn't explain how to choose affiliate programs in terms of cost vs. payoff. Anyone who reads this book will get some basic information, but before spending money on ppc advertising they'd be better off buying The Ultimate Guide to Google Adwords which does a better job explaining keywords, writing effective ads and managing campaigns.

Customer Reviews:
What a book!.......2006-01-02
This book is all that any Internet marketer needs to succeed on the Internet. It contains very practical, down to earth advice on how to become successful.
A Starting point For Marketers.......2005-03-19
I've met Ted at his World Internet Summit and I can tell you he knows what he is talking about. If you take this book as the title suggests, you'll be disappointed. Instead, go deeper and understand that IT CAN BE DONE and you need to see that others are doing it.
Focus on the the information and use those things to stimulate your own ideas. Marketing is basically not a 1,2,3 step process. It is more learning how others are doing it and copying their successes. Use the information and then put your own spin as well as your own personality into whatever you are doing.
Ted has interviewed the right people and allowed them to give insights into their successes. This book is not a how-to but a study in what to do first.
I would reccomend you use this book as a stepping stone in your quest to become an internet marketer not as the Holy Grail of marketing. To become a marketer, it takes alot more than reading a few interviews. You must apply ALL THE KNOWLEDGE you learn and put in the time to make your business successful. All marketers crave knowledge, so take this book as is - your starting point.
Not really a "How to" book.......2005-01-04
This book is a real deception. It is compound of several old interviews about how other people got rich in the Internet without giving any real specific details. Finally, the author uses 50 pages of the book you are paying for to promote other products.
Yes, I regret that I bought this book.
Powerful Internet based income generating strategies.......2004-05-22
Ted Ciuba's book on "How to get rich on the Internet" is a power-house of information for novices or others already generating income this way.
His "interviews" with Internet marketing gurus illustrate a myriad of ways of easily making money using the Internet.
Thanks Ted, I can hardly wait to get things rolling!
Old, stale and tired.......2004-05-15
I agree with the reader from Aurora, CO - there's NO solid information here, just a bunch of tired articles that have been around online for ages and most of which have already been given away as free bonuses.
The much hyped "Special Reports" are nothing more than over-long sales letters for an internet marketing seminar. The famous "Ken Kennet" story is just that - a story that a guy at a seminar got given a web business which brought in a lot of money that weekend. No details of the business, no details of of what was sold, how and to whom. It's just a plug for the next bootcamp.
I'm so angry at being ripped off, that for the first time ever, I'm returning a book to Amazon for a refund.

Not worth the paper that its printed on........1997-08-25
Many of the chapters of this book simply include facts. These chapters are of use to anyone interested in studying Russia. However, other chapters concerning topics such as mafia, politics, etc. are either totally inaccurate or not true. Having lived in Moscow for three years studying Russian foreign policy while managing an office, I strongly urge anyone interested in Russian business to "not purchase this book." If you want an accurate account of Russian politics and economy, read The Coming Russian Boom by Layard
