        I love "taking tea" whenever I get the chance, and am always on the lookout for new tea rooms to visit. This interesting book about the history of tea rooms in America has given me a new appreciation for the tea rooms I've visited in the past, and will enable me to enjoy even more those I come across in the future. The postcards of the old tea rooms were fascinating, and I especially liked reading about the food they served (and the women who cooked it!). A wonderful book!

        We are given a fascinating glimpse back into the early 1900s, when women were opening their own restaurants, and where ladies now could enjoy luncheons and teatime without being escorted by men.

        Another major change was occurring due to the automobile, making countryside excursions popular. This was the perfect time to open roadside restaurants. Whether country places or city tea rooms, the proprietors took pride in serving the kind of food they would prepare in their own homes. It is a contrast from the monotony of today's chain restaurants.

        The author's extensive research into this era will interest anyone curious about an early example of social changes that ultimately combined with others to result in the emancipation of women in the 20th century.

        This beautiful book is enriched with delightful old photos, postcards, advertisements, and color illustrations that bring the period alive.

        This book takes a new and enthusiastic look at the women's movement of the early 20th Century - the social side! Women getting out, driving cars away from their homes and routines to get together and figure it all out.

        There's nothing delicate or dainty about this tell-it-like-it-was study. Jan Whitaker presents in lay person's terms - what was a new horizon for women, where the woman's touch began to infiltrate the hospitality industry, and a whole lot more.

        A thoroughly researched subject, a beautifully designed book and a great collection of pictures. "Tea at the Blue Lantern Inn" is tops!

        With all the books on tea that have come out lately, it's amazing it took this long for anyone to do a book on the tea room, but it was worth the wait. Tea at the Blue Lantern Inn is a beautiful, witty and informative book. The illustrations are especially fine, with lots of rare advertising ephemera, great images from menus and signs, and historical photos.

        The anecdotes from the heyday of the tea room are delightful -- and often very funny. Combined with the illustrations and the wealth of detail woven into the "history" aspects of the book, these give a vivid portrait of the character of tea rooms and their proprietors. The number of prominent people in 20th century America who used to hang out in tea rooms is amazing.

        The book is ambitious in giving an overview of all kinds of tea rooms throughout the U.S., and it succeeds in convincing me that many things we now think of as normal in a good restaurant were innovations of tea rooms of the past.

              If there ever was a book with a more misleading title I would like to know. I didn't even spend the money on this book, I borrowed it from the library but still felt the need to log onto amazon to give it a review. At the age of 28 almost 29, a casualty of recent corporate restructuring I happily picked this book up hoping to find some much needed advice as to how to steer my life in the right direction. It read like every other hundreds of books out there, how to write a resume, how to prepare for an interview, how to answer that salary question, dealing with that nasty nightmare called job search. In that aspect., its a great book. But in terms of having it together by the age of 30? Not in this life time.

              At first I picked up this book in order to find the secret to success- the one substantive key to finding a successful job. But as I read it, I realized that no one book can provide the personal insight that I needed. This book, however, was great because it made me ask myself all the right questions. It made me think about what I really wanted in a job, what kinds of things I like to do and what I thought I was good at. The stories and cute comics helped me look at these questions and really think about them in a way that I never had before. If you really don't know how to get off your butt, it's a great start.

              I don't remember the last time I made a return to a book store, but for this book I made an exception. Buyers will be disappointed by the lack of useful information and reams of unhelpful advice. Most of Thau and Heflin's work is shaped from their own limited experience, and it was obvious right away that their research was poor and sporadic. Beside some humorous illustrations, I can think of few redeeming qualities of this work. Besides having a book published under their names, I would worry that these authors don't yet "have it together". If you're interested in this type of book, check out "JobSmarts for Twentysomethings" or "JobSmarts Top 50 Careers" by the creative Bradley G. Richardson. Both are much more helpful for the job search, and I found that the notable parts of "Get it Together..." were taken straight from Richardsons' work.

              I was mainly interested in reading this book to to help me buy a diamond ring for my girlfriend. However once I started reading I realized that the book contained a wealth of information that was relavent to my day to day purchases. Also, there are many interesting and amusing scam stories. The only negative part of the book is that Janice Lieberman's picture is too small.

                If your deparment or organization deals with different types of customers, this book is great. It has tips you can actually use in a call center enviroment. No fluffy stuff and no bull. Useful information that can be applied to almost every call. It's a great book to buy for all employees who will be dealing with internal and external customers over the phone.
