Book Description
Some countries are earlier than others in the development and introduction of environmental innovations. Often, the leadership in technological development is accompanied by a leadership in environmental policy. The book provides an analysis of lead markets for innovations such as fuel cells, photovoltaics, and others. Contributions of innovation economics, policy analysis and environmental economics are assessed regarding their potential to explain the leadership of single countries. The book depicts the policy frameworks that are favourable to the creation of such lead markets on the basis of theoretical considerations and case studies. Finally, recommendations for R and D policies, environmental and industrial policies are derived.

Description:
Environmental regulations are often intended to stimulate the generation and adoption of eco-efficient innovations. An important argument in the public debate is also the creation of new markets for environmentally benign products, processes and services in other countries and the generation, as a result, of export opportunities for the pioneering country (lead markets). Research on lead markets has not, however, focused on environmental innovations to date. We therefore extend the lead market model to environmental innovations and take particular account of the peculiarities of such innovations, in particular, the public good character of environmental benefits and the role of regulations. This approach is applied to two case studies: wind energy and fuel-efficient passenger cars. In both cases, the innovation was initially adopted in one country. Other countries subsequently adopted the same innovation design favored by the lead market which, in turn, developed into a large exporter in the wind generation and car industries, respectively. We discuss the regulations employed and the reasons for the international success of the innovations induced by them. Our findings demonstrate that when supported by global demand or regulatory trends, strict regulation results in the creation of lead markets. Finally, we provide recommendations on how our model could be used for further research and in the development of a coordinated environmental and innovation policy.

Customer Reviews:
Amazing research not found elsewhere.......2005-06-27
If you are a cruiser, this is definitely a book for you to buy or at least borrow from your library. It has EVERYTHING you could ever want to know about cruising history.
First, to be clear, this is NOT a review of which cruise ships have pools and which have nice restaurants. Instead, this book talks about the history of cruising, and gives you background on the various cruise ships in operation. You learn really cool stories about how the cruise ship lines formed, and hear stories about individual ships and what has happened to them over the years.
The book is hard cover and HUGE. It's about 360 pages of dense information. I had a real blast reading it. There's a story about the Norwegian Majesty, about how it was running on GPS autopilot in 1995 heading back from Bermuda to Boston. The crew figured it was OK and didn't bother to look out the window at all. The next thing they knew, the ship was grounded on a shoal near Nantucket.
The book has a giant appendix full of histories of all the ships. It is really fascinating to learn how frequently ships are traded from line to line, and just what they were originally built for. Some cruise ships began their lives as car ferries, and then were rearranged to handle passengers.
If there's any detraction, it's that the author seems a little fascinated with the type of funnel (smokestack) on the ships and the type of propulsion system :) But hey, we all have our little quirks. If that's what he enjoys, that's fine with me! I might have liked a little more detail about what the ships were like inside, but you can get that from plenty of other sources. As far as base history of the ships that we love, there really is no other book that comes anywhere close to this one.
Well recommended!
Fascinating.......2004-03-15
As you can imagine from the title, this book is for people who are fascinated with cruise ships or the industry and have a penchant for details. Not everyone needs to know that the Carnival Destiny was the largest cruise ship afloat- for less than a year. If you do though, this book is for you. There is equal parts of the history of each of the major cruise lines and the history of the ships they own and operate. The chapter near the end about the construction process is fascinating. If you are looking for tipping guidelines for the wait staff you have the wrong book. If you want to be the only person on your cruise that knows where you ship was built and its propulsion system, this book is a must.
The Complete History of all Major Cruise Lines.......2004-01-18
Mr. Cudahy's book is a historical review of the development which started in the late sixties. He covers the history of all major cruise lines (Carnival, RCI, Princess, NCL, HAL, Cunard and Seabourn, Celebrity and some others) in much detail. Even cruise lines which have left the trade are mentioned, like Admiral Cruises or Commodore Cruise Line for instance.
Other chapters deal with fleet management, the building of cruise ships or environmental regulations. The information given here is rather superficial. I wonder, whom the book is adressed to? The historian, the cruise insider, the experienced passenger, the potential passenger the travel agents or the ship buffs?
I miss some information on how the cruise lines are positioned in the market and if they succeeded in getting the image anticipated. Mr. Cudahy only mentions the facts, visible to anybody observing the cruise market. Any reasons for this PHENOMENON to happen are not given. This costs one star of the rating.
A very extensive Appendix A (almost 100 pages - out of 366) gives technical details on ALL cruise ships (past and present).
Rather strange is Appendix B in which the location of 156 vessels at high noon on July 4, 2000 is mentioned (Example: Carinval Triumph: At sea, 7-night western Caribbean cruise from Miami). Does that make sense?
The rather limited number of pictures (all b/w) and the poor quality of the paper (the pictures have almost no contrast) resulted in the loss of another star.
The book can only be recommeded to people who are interested in the facts of the historic development of the cruise industry in North America.
The Cruise Ship Phenomenon in North America.......2002-01-28
Outstanding book for cruise buffs who enjoy the history of the pleasure cruise industry.

Customer Reviews:
Great place to start looking for stocks.......2006-05-24
This is a great place to start if you are looking for stocks to buy. It gives a great breakdown of a stocks 8 year history of:
>Revenue
>Net Income
>Earnings per share
>Dividends per Share
>Highest and Lowest stock price for each year
It gives you the basic profile of the company, the shortcomings to bear in mind, and reasons to buy.
It is great for ideas on companies to buy with a great overview of the stocks history. It divides stocks into its industry, sector, and category. This book will be useful to use to understand and create a diversified portfolio of individual stocks.
But be warned of three things:
1). Use this book as a history book not a newspaper, go to Quotes/Yahoo or marketcenter.com for up to date information.
2). These are all large cap stocks, this book is not for investors looking for small cap stocks.
3)/ This is a basic beginners book, great for them, but an experienced investor will already have this information from other periodicals.
The usual suspects.......2006-02-25
I enjoy this book and use it as a reference. I try to keep a 20 stock portfolio and use this book to stay diversified. It doesnt contain many smaller companies. These are all large dividend paying companies. I think that it would be nice if it contained portfolios for folks of different ages and risk assumption.
Good place to Start.......2004-04-27
Mr. Slatter has a good idea in trying to narrow the universe of companies to invest in down to 100. He writes up a couple page profile on each company which tells you the pros and cons and some background history. He provides you with the web address which would be a good next step. All of the companies in the book are quite substantial and on average probably solid long term investments. It is always interesting to read his commentary at the beginning of the book, even if you do not agree with everything. He also does a good job of gathering significant reporting that has occurred in various publications into one place from the past year. THat is a time saver. Think of this book as an annual newsletter. It is a lot cheaper than most newsletters you can buy.
Good book on conservative investing.......2004-01-20
The main strength of this book is the 100 detailed company profiles, which give the rundown on the company's core businesses, their history of profitability, product and market area dominance, quality of management, and so on. What use is this, you might ask? Well, Peter Lynch once said that you should be able to tell at least a two-minute story about each stock you buy. Well, the coverage here amounts to a ten-minute story for each of the 100 stocks. Most of these were familiar to me, but some weren't, and so I learned something there. Perhaps the best stock I learned about was good ol' MMM, Minnesota Manufacturing and Mining. It has a 20-year record of 20 percent return on equity (ROE), and amazingly, 30 percent return on capital. You could do worse than buy this stock and just hold it. (By the way, it's up several points over the last few trading days in the market, and Proctor and Gamble has done pretty well also, another recommended stock). Anyway, for those wishing to follow a conservative, large-cap investment program, this book is packed with useful information. Anybody who buys the top dozen stocks in this book, distributing them among at least half a dozen sectors, should do pretty well over the long term. Remember, although 90 percent of all mutual fund managers don't beat the broad indexes, it's only necessary to match the market's performance over the long haul to become very well off financially and secure your retirement. This book will help you do that by concentrating on the fairly conservative strategy of buying and holding quality large-cap stocks.
Everyone has their own strategy anyway........2003-08-25
John Slatter's strategies to some may be archaic, to others nonsensical. But really, when it comes to investing, everyone has their own strategy anyway, so what is the fuss all about? Slatter's statement about stocks is really in reference to the "bond craze" that some people get, the real estate markets and commodities. People who don't understand those particular markets should stay away from them as they have a good potential to get burned if they are ignorant about their moves within it. More people understand stocks, he knows that, so he is going to speak to these people. The definitions of market lingo are great and very clear. The company profiles are great and give pretty good insight into each company and what makes them valuable. Updated information? Why try and find that in a book anyway? The internet will do for updated information. Afterall, the author is only giving an opinion as to what makes those particular stocks valuable. He is definately not writing a stock atlas or performance history. Good read, thought through all the way.

Net Entrepreneurs Only: 10 Entrepreneurs Tell the Stories of Their Success
ASIN: 0071355790 |
Amazon.com
If leadership by example is the best way to inspire, you'll find plenty of inspiration in Striking it Rich.com. Rather than write another how-to-build-a-better-Web-site guide, Los Angeles Times columnist Jaclyn Easton profiles 23 successful sites, detailing what has brought these firms to their current status.
For those who think reading the stories of Motorcycle Online and HorseNet holds little interest for what they're trying to accomplish, Easton advises in her introduction that a site's content is irrelevant--it's how the business is run that matters. The one point Easton hammers throughout these profiles is that all the site owners are passionate about their businesses--a quality more important than such buzzwords as "interactivity" and "stickiness."
All of the subjects tell fascinating yet strikingly similar tales en route to becoming "incredibly successful" (though Easton's use of the term is a bit fuzzy). All of the profile subjects conducted extensive research and think more about how to serve their customers than what type of animation to include on their site. It's hard not to be inspired by a successful Web company whose business offers auctions of remnant steel (Weirton Steel).
For anyone who isn't sure how to make a Web-based business a success, Striking it Rich.com is essential reading. --John Frederick Moore

Web advertising basics.......2006-02-28
Strikingitrich.com looks at more than 200 companies that are using their Web sites to conduct business and make money.
The author of this book offers the reader much in the form a Web advertising basics. For example, the author lists terms that one needs to know about Web advertising:
· Banner ad: a small advertisement that is hot-linked to an advertiser's web site.
· Click though: occurs when a visitor clicks on a banner and is taken to the advertiser's site.
· Impression: occurs when a banner ad is seen by a visitor; three ads on a page count as thee impressions.
· Link: any banner, button, or text that, when clicked, takes visitors to another site.
· Pay per click: pricing model based on click throughs rather than number of impressions.
· Visitor: total number of people who access a Web site over a period of time.
The author combines important technical information about web advertising, such as explaining what is a "Hit," with important information on what various highly successful companies are doing to make money using their Web sites.
An Historical Perspective of Web Businesses.......2006-01-12
In the hey-day of the Internet Gold Rush, among the dreamers and schemers, there were some companies actually making money on the web - and they weren't all p-o-r-n sites.
It's outdated in 2006, as the market has matured and evolved.
This book showcases successful sites from 'back in the day,' and how they made money. It would be interesting to research how many are still in business, how many were sold to bigger players, and how many evolved into what they are today under the same ownership.
Today, the internet is rising again.......2005-04-05
Although this book is relatively dated in internet time, it holds the key to success in the e-world. Just as generals study the history of warfare and key battles, you should study the history of what worked and didn't work during the early e-commerce days.
Today, the internet is rising again and is being positioned to truly set us free as we enter the age of wireless. It won't be the strongest who thrive in this new age, it will be those who are most flexible and adaptable.
Many of us are captivated by the headlines of only a few major published e-commerce success stories. In fact, there are many more real success stories of companies racking up impressive sales without headlines.
In StrikingItRich.com, Easton highlights 23 such companies:
As you can see, this book is not a how-to book in the traditional sense. Instead, Easton shows us real life success stories of people just like you. Prepare yourself to be completely motivated, inspired and revved up to take on the world.
Michael Davis, Editor - Byvation
An interesting look at small and effective successes.......2002-12-29
This book is a product of the Internet boom / bubble and not all of these seb businesses have survived. However, a surprising number have. Some were sold while others evolved one way or the other. It is quite an interesting to read about how these businesses viewed their markets at the height of the boom and then look at how things are today.
I think the book has a couple of good points to make. These sites were not funded by huge amounts of venture capital. They are all small sites that have done well for people who had a specific expertise, who thought small in a tightly focused way, and who used the web to broaden their reach to a proven client base.
There are thousands of successful sites just like these and this type of thing can be done thousands of more times by intelligent business people. My advice, however, is that unless you really KNOW what your plan and goals are, don't spend your hard earned cash until you are certain you have minimized your uncertainties. Of course, to be an entrepreneur is to have more risk than regular folks are willing to take on. But spend more time getting ready and learning your business rather than recklessly diving in head first to see how deep the pond is. If you don't you could end up spending a lot of money on a website that will be nothing but a drain on your precious cash and time.
Book Description
Rightly fearing that unscrupulous rulers would break them up, seize their resources, or submit them to damaging forms of intervention, strong networks of trust such as kinship groups, clandestine religious sects, and trade diasporas have historically insulated themselves from political control by a variety of strategies. Drawing on a vast range of comparisons over time and space, Charles Tilly asks and answers how, and with what consequences, members of trust networks have evaded, compromised with, or even sought connections with political regimes.

Book Description
Lionel Rothkrug made his name 25 years ago by theorizing that just as a human personality is defined by how an individual organizes his or her powers to behave, so a society acquires personality in the exercise of its organizational powers. Death, Trust and Society revisits and expands on this concept by focusing on how society's attitudes toward the dead—seen in funerary rites, mortuary practices, and pilgrimage patterns—shape the formation of social structures and contribute to the development of cultural traits. Death, Trust and Society is the debut title in North Atlantic's Death and Remembrance interdisciplinary series on cultural identity across nationalities and nations.
Book Description
How healthy are modern democratic institutions? In Political Democracy, Trust, and Social Justice, Charles F. Andrain and James T. Smith seek explanations for political alienation and discontent within democracies throughout the world.
Basing their research on the 1995-1997 World Values Survey, the authors explore information about eight established democracies (Norway, Sweden, Finland, Switzerland, West Germany, the United States, Japan, Spain) and seven democratizing societies, including three (East Germany, Bulgaria, Russia) that formerly had state socialist systems and four (Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Chile) where the military has played a crucial role. Andrain and Smith's keen analysis identifies general cultural values and structural conditions linked to political participation, popular support for democracy, and perceptions of justice in specific societies across the globe.
Teachers and students of democratic theory, comparative politics, and political sociology will welcome this penetrating new study. General readers concerned about the current strength of political democracy will find numerous stimulating ideas. This third volume in the Democratization and Political Development Series increases our understanding of "democratization"--the process of realizing full civil and political rights in a viable, representative system. Methodologically sound, concise, insightful, and a model for further inquiry, this innovative book will become a seminal work in comparative political studies.

Book Description
This book is the result of the first SEEP (Studies in Economic Ethics and Philosophy) conference that was held in Asia. First, the Western tradition is reinterpreted and restated by the two editors with their diversified perspective of virtue ethics and communicative ethics. Then, new approaches such as "critical realism", "reciprocal delivery", "evolutionary thought" and "cultural studies" are applied to understand ethical problems in economics. Further, in contrast to the reassessment of Scottish moral philosophy and German Romanticism, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean ethical thinking is examined under the modern perspective. This book does not miss the reflections on current problems around the penetration of corruption and the primacy of shareholders' value in the field of business.

Book Description
In this book, Luis Roniger offers a comprehensive and systematic discussion of the influence of clientelism and clientelistic relationships in social and political life in Mexico and Brazil. The author describes, analyzes, and compares clientelistic arrangements not only in terms of economic development and social differentiation, but also as a strategy of interaction and control over economic and political markets shaped both by structural factors and cultural patterns. Contrary to some theorists who argue that clientelism disappears following industrialization and modernization, Roniger sees clientelistic networks as both a distinct institutional pattern and a major model of structuring social exchange. Thus, he argues that it may be more reasonable to expect changes in the forms of Mexican and Brazilian clientelism, rather than its demise following economic development and political transformation. Roniger begins with a general discussion of clientelism and trust, exploring the variety of clientelistic bonds, the conditions which lead to the emergence of clientelism, and the dynamics of Latin American clientelism. Following a chapter on the institutional contexts of Mexico and Brazil, the author presents an extended analysis of clientelism in the two countries. In each case, Roniger presents a historical overview, discusses the dominant characteristics of clientelism in that country, and examines clientelism in the rural, urban, labor, and political sectors. Subsequent chapters compare and contrast Mexican and Brazilian variants of clientelism. In the final chapter, Roniger places the Latin American data within its broader cultural context, comparing Mexican and Brazilian clientelism with hierarchical arrangements in Japan, Thailand, and India. He concludes that although political and social change in Mexico and Brazil has led to major transformations in clientelistic patterns, clientelism has been retained as an important element of social exchange in these societies. Sociologists, anthropologists, political scientists, Latin American specialists, and students of development will find Roniger's work and incisive portrait of Mexican and Brazilian institutional development and social realities.

Book Description
This new volume presents a systematic and comparative analysis of the current and future role of foundations in Europe and beyond.
While cross-national studies of business firms, government agencies and service-providing nonprofit organizations are increasingly becoming available, little is known, in a systematic way, about the challenges foundations are facing. This book therefore includes a mapping and appraisal of foundation visions, policies and strategies, and an overall assessment of the current and future policy environment in which they operate. It goes beyond a quantitative profile of foundations in Europe, and probes deeper into their role and contributions in meeting the economic, cultural, environmental and educational needs of European societies. Developed from an international research project, this study includes twenty country studies comparing foundations in Europe, the Europe Union and the US.
This valuable reference will be of interest to researchers and students of foundations, policy-making, comparative politics and international business, as well as to policy-makers and professionals.

Book Description
This is the first attempt to deal with trusts on a comparative law basis. The book examines more than thirty countries, and submits a unified theory of trusts. The effects of the Hague Convention of 1985 are discussed, as well as its implementation in ratifying civil law countries, where it is now possible to form trusts under a foreign law. Academics will find this book a novel approach to the English-model trust, and practitioners will find it gives a wealth of information on foreign legal systems.
