A usefull book.......2007-08-25

I used this book 3 years ago when I took a class in Harvard. This books allows me to understand the most important subjects in politics today, and also give me a lot of bibliography, so f I was interested in one of the subjects I could go deeper. I used for my thesis and Is a very good tool to do research I extremly recomended!

Good reviews are suspect.......2006-06-28

Did anyone who gave this book 5 stars actually read it? Or are they good friends of the editors? The comment attributed to Professor Gaddis located above these reviews was especially disappointing. His books about the Cold War are wonderful but this book would bore even incoming freshmen at his university. Someone must have called in big favor for that quote.

There is nothing new in this book unless you are surprised by statements like "the internet has changed the way we communicate." On the other hand, this book may be for you if you didn't realize the U.N. Security Council has five permanent members and they all have a veto. My point is this: the book is marketed to people with backgrounds in security issues but insults the intelligence of anyone who knows anything about the field (and I don't mean academic background either; reading USA Today would surpass the insight provided in this book).

If you are a professor putting together a class syllabus, please save your students' sanity and do not make them read this book. If you are just looking to buy it for fun, you need to reassess your life. Save your money and time and choose another book. Take it from someone who actually read it...one star is generous.

This book was assigned in a graduate level international relations class. While the aim of the book is laudable - to give practical solutions to foreign policy problems - the execution leaves much to be desired. The editors make each contributing author shoehorn their essays into a rather clumsy outline. There are countless "no **** Sherlock" moments when reading this book. Overall, it is not insightful and an utter waste of time.

This is by far, without a doubt, the single-handedly most God-awfully, hideously sterile, boring piece of literature ever produced by mankind. I have heard a rumor that hospitals are going to start making patients read this book in lieu of anaesthesia before conducting surgery.

This book is an absolute must-read for a wide range of readers from foreign relations expert to absolute neophyte. As a lay person, I found it extremely readable and accessible. The book offers thought-provoking insights through thoughtfully organized essays and introduced by the authors in such a way that gives the reader a useful context for analysis. A definite 5 star publication!

The book is a shallow summary of common-sense techniques that have applicability only for retail -type selling and networking. Some useful suggestions, but anybody seriously into networking would probably think of them by him/herself. I returned my copy. Not worth the money.

If you are a business man, you should read this book. For the ones that know Ruf (the author) it is nice to read and visualize Ruf's networking enthusiasm. The book contains nice stories and practical advise for all levels of networking.

Some tidbits of useful info mixed in with a lot of babble!.......2000-08-04

The first few chapters were basically an Anthony Robbins book - a lot of babbling about self-improvement etc. There were some useful bits of advice on analyzing your spending, budgeting and investing, but those tips probably only made up 30 of the 250 pages. And you have to wade through the pschyo-babble, bad jokes and just plain boring stuff to find them. I'd recommend buying this book if you are very disorganized financially and desperately need a starting point, and if it was on sale at a big discount! For more advanced info, look elsewhere.

Beware Financial Advisors Selling Books.......2000-08-02

Financial advisors who write books often tell just one side -- the positive side of the financial products they tout in their books. Some of the advice in this book is better for the author (and his financial planner friends) than it was for me or other book buyers. Too bad since it's MY MONEY that was wasted. If I had known some of the hidden risks and hidden costs of this author's recommendations I would have made other choices from an impartial source (one who doesn't stand to gain bonuses, commissions or other fees from his recommendations).

Tod is a great writer about finances. I think his advice is sound and worth following. I have both of his books and have profited from both of them. I don't believe you can own too many books on finances.

This book is well written and gets to the very heart of the matter. The author starts by painting a very clear vision of the future and describes the general trends and steps towards realizing that future. Prognostication is very hard and rarely accurate in a dynamic environment. The author provides a useful framework towards addressing the trends thereby empowing an executive to develop a strategy which can evolve with the market.

Ceci explique pourquoi Madagascar, en dépit de son expérience dans le domaine de la décentralisation, reste un pays fortement centralisé avec seulement 3 ou 4 pour cent des dépenses exécutées au-dessous du niveau central et très peu de prérogatives décentralisées au niveau local. Malgré les nombreux obstacles structurels à la décentralisation dans les pays pauvres, le cas de Madagascar offre de nombreuses leçons positives, lesquelles semblent indiquer le potentiel du processus de décentralisation. Cette étude fournit une analyse détaillée des finances des gouvernements locaux et développe une méthodologie visant à évaluer les besoins de financement locaux (estimation du gap de financement local).
