Book Description
#Though Richard Nixon came to office preoccupied with foreign policy, he soon had to grapple with an economy that threatened him with political defeat. Following the advice of Milton Friedman, the president placed his initial hopes for good times in the economics of caution. But when the economy dipped into recession and cost the Republicans victory in the congressional election of 1970, Nixon turned for rescue not to his economists, but to a politician, the former Democratic governor of Texas, John Connally, who became secretary of the Treasury midway through the first term.
"I can play it round, I can play it flat, just tell me how to play it," Connally liked to say. Together, Connally and Nixon set out to save Nixon's presidency by any means necessary. In a televised speech on August 15, 1971, Nixon stunned the world and reversed his political fortunes by announcing a series of measures that contradicted everything he was supposed to believe in--wage and price controls, abandonment of the international gold standard, depreciation of the dollar, and deficit spending. "This will put the Democrats in a hell of a spot, this whole speech," the president exulted. He was right. The economy took off in 1972. Nixon took the credit. And his reelection by a landslide was assured.
Historian Allen J. Matusow now presents the first comprehensive history of Nixon's political economy. He depicts a president who disliked the subject but was forced to pay attention or lose his dream of effecting a historic realignment of the political parties in America. The study derives its authority from extensive archival research in Nixon's presidential papers, including notes by Haldeman and Ehrlichman of crucial conversations in the Oval Office. Matusow shows the poverty of contemporary economic theory, Nixon's willingness to sacrifice the world economy for his domestic political purposes, and his desperate attempts to find something, anything, that might work. Lurching from one set of policies to another, Matusow argues, Nixon achieved only illusory successes that ultimately brought on a decade of economic disaster.
Nixon's Economy will contribute significantly to the emerging reinterpretation of a pivotal presidency. For scholars of the era, the book will be required reading. For students and general readers, it will help explain in lucid prose the politics and economics of our own time. Narrative history that tells a good story, this book will reveal yet another Nixon, while offering a compelling case history of how politicians shape and sometimes misshape the performance of the American economy.
Customer Reviews:
Breakthrough history of Nixon's Machiavellian economics.......2000-03-30
Over the last decade or so, there has been a substantial rethinking of the Nixon presidency.... Until the appearance of Allen Matusow's new book, however, Nixon's economic policies had not received a similar reassessment. In a very readable and well researched exploration of Nixon's economics, Matusow makes a compelling case that Nixon held no principled position whatsoever and that his economic policies were overtly and explicitly driven by his attempts to create a new electoral majority.... The Nixon presidency, as seen through Matusow's account, becomes an excellent case study in public-choice economics and the failures of interventionism.Three major strengths of Matusow's book deserve special mention. First, he has made extensive use of archival materials that were inaccessible until recently. By using the presidential office files, Bob Haldeman's extensive notes, and the various books and recollections of Nixon's associates, he has assembled a large amount of material from a variety of sources to document various meetings and discussions in great detail. The result is a very ugly view of the politicization of economic policy that puts one in mind of the old saw about not wanting to know how sausages or laws are made....A second strength of the book, of special interest to economists, is Matusow's careful documentation of the role played by well-known economists in the Nixon administration. Arthur Burns, Herbert Stein, Paul McCracken, Milton Friedman, and others all have starring roles in the drama. Except Friedman, none of them presents an appealing picture. Matusow extensively documents the ways in which Nixon's economic advisors were quick to sacrifice principles, particularly free-market principles, for political expediency.... Matusow makes extensive use of Friedman's Newsweek columns to illustrate the ways in which Nixon's policies did not correspond with the Friedman's free-market, monetarist line....The book's third strength is Matusow's use of economics. In more than three hundred pages of analysis of Nixon's economics, I found very few places where Matusow made an obvious error of theory or history.... But in most cases he handles the economics nicely, especially in his discussions of inflation, where he keeps the behavior of the money supply always at the forefront, and the energy crisis, where he does a fine job of documenting the various government interventions that precipitated the crisis and the horrendous policy mistakes that exacerbated it.... Matusow deserves particular praise for his discussion of Bretton Woods and the gold window, in which he deals with some complicated issues in international monetary economics and does a good job of rendering them comprehensible....Matusow has carefully and cogently documented Nixon's use of the instruments of power in pursuit of his own political goals and illuminated the disastrous results (double-digit inflation and the worst recession since the 1930s, not to mention a legacy of interventionism that has continued to the present) that Nixon's economics engendered. Matusow's book, though not couched in such terms, is an excellent case study in public-choice economics and is recommended to students of public choice and recent U.S. economic history.
An excellent history -- well written.......2000-02-08
This book fills a big gaping hole in economic history. There are probably hundreds of books on Nixon and Vietnam, China, and Watergate. But very few exist on his other policies, including his economic policies. This is especially strange considering that his Administration presided over the final destruction of the gold standard, first sustained budget deficits, and the beginning of the Great Recession of 1970s.
Thus, this book is extremely useful. Almost month-by-month it describes the swinging pendulum of booms and busts that resulted from Nixon's economic mismanagement and the world economy's response to it. This is a very thorough work, meticulously documented. The author carefully documents endless cases of sacrifice of economic policies to blatantly short-term political goals.
It's also a good narrative, it weaves all the facts and explanation together, and it's organized very well. I found it very easy to read and understand it. It sheds much light on the economic causes of all those strange events of the 1970s. It's also a great companion to a more general history of USA during those years.

In business and out, the ability to convince others to adopt a specific point of view is almost always a precursor to success. Norbert Aubuchon, a former DuPont executive who now teaches motivational techniques in seminars and workshops, outlines his basic methodology in The Anatomy of Persuasion. Through case studies, practice assignments, and a look at some common roadblocks, he shows how to deal with both routine situations and the inevitable surprises that regularly arise in the workplace.
Book Description
Some people seem to be able to talk anybody into anything! Do they simply possess a natural talent that the rest of us can never hope to imitate?
This refreshing books says "No!" and provides readers with a unique, proven, step-by-step analytical thinking process that anyone can use to analyze, organize, and present information in a persuasive way.
The Anatomy of Persuasion literally dissects each step in the persuasion process. Readers will turn their great ideas into tangible realities as they learn how to:
** apply the two major principles of communication
** perceive the needs of others
** present the features and benefits of their idea
** understand the subconscious decisions people often make
** create a logical, error-free proposal (oral or written) that will
win the day.
Customer Reviews:
Business Communications.......2007-06-25
It is certain that this book has enough gusto to put your thoughts and fingers to work.
To the novice or expert you will discover that this book fosters logical thinking.
Outstanding book.......2005-10-18
the book is great. It gives step by step instructions to better presentation. Material can be used in every day life very effectively. I recommend every one to read this.
A must listen.......2001-08-30
Persuassion was an art that has been put to more productive usage.
The author will define and train us gain that skill - he has invoked that inert, once dormant art - you will no longer be the same - no more anger, but with the will to PERSUADE
The title of this book is misleading IMHO........2001-07-24
"Anatomy" suggests an anotomical analysis of something. This book talks about "process", not essence.
If you are an analytical thinker, you will hate this book. If you are somebody who can be easily programmed, then you will love it.
The first 20 pages reads like a conversation with a typical salesman. -blah blah good! -blah blah blah good!
I was expecting a clear evaluation of the linguistic nuances of social persuation, and/or guidance for evaluating the "mark" (sort of speak), to help me assess the effectiveness of a pitch.
That is NOT what this book is.
They talk about "thinking process". Well. It may be a process. The other part...?
Excellent for technically trainged people among others........1999-09-29
I am an engineer, and I have to sell my services. Getting buy-in for my engineering projects was not one of my strong suits until I read Aubuchon's book. I learned an analytical-thinking approach to my proposals. Much to my surprise the techniques presented actually work for me. My scientific background didn't help me much when it came to getting business, but this book did. I recommend it anyone who wants to add commercial success to his or her lives.
Book Description
Running a bed & breakfast or country inn is the kind of business that appeals to men and women seeking to escape the corporate treadmill or to build a rewarding retirement business.
The author of this book, Lisa Rogak, provides information on how to select the best location, zoning, permits and licenses, the reality of living with guests in your home, behind the scenes at a B&B, and deciding whether to hire staff.
Customer Reviews:
"Wake up and 'Brew' the Coffee" and all else you have to do........2001-01-18
A friend of mine lent me his copy of this book so I could get a better idea of what it takes to own and run a B&B. It is quite a romantic notion to own a B&B when you stay in one. When you read this book you will find that there is a lot behind the scenes including tons of laundry. Have you thought about how to cook for 12 people at once? How about handling slow times like off-season? Should you buy an existing B&B or create your own within your current home. This books helps with these questions and more, plus profiles of existing B&B's and lots of resources for B&B owners. Excellent guide!

This Book Needs to be Reprinted.......2001-10-03
For the middle class - getting sick in your old age forces you into extremme state of humiliation. For years you worked to secure a retirement for yourself and your spouse - and than the cost of medical care - the parts that MEDICARE does not cover leaves you in a desparate situation. The medical costs are more than you can bear - you are responsible for your medical, skilled nursing, home care, ambulance service, prescription drugs etc. Paying these bills in a long term illness - impoverishes the spouse who is left after the debilitating illness takes the sick one's life. I have no objection that saved wealth would not be transferred to one's descendants - but a system has to be put into place that protects the spouse that remains alive. Mr. Armond Budish in this fine book - provides one legal and moral techniques to allow one the best opportunity to save a reasonable portion of one's wealth so that the surviving spouse does not end up totally destitute. in most cases the surviving spouse's health has taken a precarious toll in taking care of the sick seeing him or she waste away - and seeing the all-powerful state force one to spend one's resources down. For an individual who has worked and saved all his/her life refused welfare of any kind over those forty productive work years - to be treated so disdainlly by a cold bureacracy makes one wonder about the priorities or lack thereof in establishing a safety net for our senior citizens. If the money is taken by the state upon the death of the second spouse - that's fine. Children of hard working middle class citizens like myself should not necessarily be entitled to the redistribution of wwealth - but allow for and provide our seniors their share of the sun.
