Book Description
Praise for Paving Wall Street
"This is a remarkable book that weaves the deep scientific roots of modern finance and modern financial institutions with humorous perspective and considerable wisdom. Few understand the pervasive and complex economic principles that govern our world of finance. Few are aware of the academic and scientific origins of financial practices and market instruments that are commonplace today. Ross Miller uses his experience and talents acquired as an experimental economist to help us understand a world that is contradictory, potentially dangerous, and paradoxical. He entertains us while doing it." —Charles R. Plott, Edward S. Harkness Professor of Economics and Political Science, California Institute of Technology
"Decisions by millions of individuals produce the fierce tides and churning seas of Wall Street. Miller wields his microscope in the laboratory of experimental economics to provide a sprightly and insightful analysis of investor behavior." —Richard Zeckhauser, Frank P. Ramsey Professor of Political Economy, John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University
"Dramatic new ways for buying and selling-spectrum auctions, e-commerce, derivatives-are the economics professions contribution to the Information Revolution. This book explains how many of these innovations began with simple experiments at Caltech. The style is a refreshing combination-dramatic and fun to read, but also historically and scientifically accurate. So, I can send one to my Dad, a salesman, and another to my girlfriend, a patent attorney." —Colin Camerer, Rea and Lela Axline Professor of Business Economics, California Institute of Technology
"Paving Wall Street is a first-rate insight into bubbles and the experimental research performed on the topic by leading academicians such as Vernon Smith." —David Dreman, Chairman, Dreman Value Management
"Academic ideas have revolutionized how Wall Street operates. Entirely new markets have been created. This revolution continues today, accelerated by the rise of increasingly automated markets. Ross Miller has produced a book that makes the leading-edge financial and economic thinking that shapes these new markets accessible to practitioners and professionals. With no equations and a deft touch, this is an excellent guide to the future of greater Wall Street." —David J. Leinweber, PhD, Economics/Social Sciences, California Institute of Technology
Customer Reviews:
Useful.......2005-06-08
Miller provides in-depth insight into past financial market events and by doing so sheds light on what might happen today on several fronts. Three examples: His discussion of the 1998 Long-Term Capital Management debacle is relevant for understanding current risks in hedge funds. His analysis of 1980s portfolio insurance should add to concerns about the proliferation of capital guaranteed notes. His take on market circuit breakers, which he describes as regulatory folly, raises the question of what would happen today if these were triggered.
While the book reviews a large and varied body of academic research, focusing heavily on the experimental economics that the author subscribes to, it offers practical conclusions that anybody interested in finance will find worthwhile. As a financial journalist, I found it very useful.
However, because it covers a lot of ground, readers may want to pick and choose what they want to read from the index. The chapter and section headings, while entertaining, are not good guides for this purpose.
Mentions an article of mine in endnotes.......2003-02-07
But that's not my only reason for thinking this a great book.
Ross M. Miller makes three large claims here. I think he makes good on the first two. I'm not so sure about the third, but even there he makes a case that needs to be made.
First, he explains that one branch of economics has become an experimental science.
Second, he says that this variant of economics has produced important results - theorems disclosing how markets might best be structured or restructured, and how the privatization of now-public goods might be accomplished, in ways that could produce enormous productivity gains.
He more pessimistically claims though, thirdly, that these theorems probably won't produce such gains, because in doing so they would hurt politically powerful interests.
The idea of "experimental economics" is simple enough: a college professor need only ask his students to co-operate in a simple auction-based game, so that he (and they) can observe the process by which prices come into existence under simplified conditions. Once a body of observations has developed, he and other experimenters can vary the rules and conditions of the game and observe the effect the changes have upon the trading strategies of the players and the game outcomes.
It was at Harvard University, in the 1940s, that such experiments got their start, in the classroom of Professor Edward Chamberlain. In the decades since, a body of observations has developed that in some respects supports neoclassical economic theory, but that in one crucial respect calls for its modification. Neoclassical theory needs to be modified to account for the possibility of irrational price bubbles. What is of greater policy importance, though, is that post-Chamberlainian experiments have given us a good idea of how markets can be structured to prevent bubble formation.
Where it's at in economics today.......2002-02-06
About 1975, when Ross Miller and I were grad students in economics, there was a consensus "economic view of the world." Economists who had to deal with the real world -- policy makers and development types -- didn't really believe it, but the mainstream did. Not only believed it, but took it for granted.
That's not true today. The consensus is fragmenting. If you want to understand the underpinnings of this intellectual shift, read Ross's book. It's written clearly, even excitingly, with well-chosen examples. And it is written by a real economist, who's trying to understand what's right and what's wrong about how we think about the economic world.
Perfect for our Economic Times!.......2002-01-18
A solid, fluid look at experimental economics! In these turbulent times on Wall Street (and really in markets around the world) this proves to be a great source of how we've come to this point, but more importantly, where we can go from here.

Book Description
Business Communication: Building Critical Skills by Locker and Kaczmarek represents a unique approach to a hands-on course. Written by the same author of Business and Administrative Communication, this completely new approach is devised and created with the assistance of a community college colleague. The innovative modular structure allows instructors to focus on specific skills and provides greater flexibility for short courses and different teaching approaches. While grounded in solid business communication fundamentals, this four-color paperback takes a strong workplace activity orientation which helps students connect what they learn to what they do or will do on the job.
Customer Reviews:
I Like It.......2004-01-09
I found this book to be very effective. It's modular format made it easy to adapt to my classes, one on the Internet . . . no more taking page numbers from here and there. The examples were useful, with more on the Website. The students said it was good, too. I've used the old and the new versions. The new version has updated information and some new examples and assignments. I'm glad the "Polishing your Prose" assignments were kept. I assign these to students for self-study and see improvements in their grammar.
Great Book.......2003-01-15
Few business writing texts balance salient instruction with an easy-to-read writing style. Business Communication: Building Critical Skills does just that. None of the textbooks I've used scored as highly with the students for effectiveness and easy use as this book. As anyone who teaches writing knows, students frequently complain about the textbook regardless of how good it is. Usually those students are the ones that do poorly in the class. But this book satisfied just about everybody including me. The authors manage to cut all the unnecessary information books of this kind usually are crammed with and get to the point. The exercises are great and have real world application, and the many grammar refreshers helped improve my students' writing. It's especially good for non-native speakers of English. This book seems well designed for teachers and students, and I would recommend it to both groups. The book is also cheaper than many competing books, which makes it even more attractive for students on a tight budget, which is most students today.
Mistakes over Mistakes.......2002-12-06
Despite the fact that the book focuses on Business Communications, it still will not help students to achieve better communication skills (at least not with this issue). The book is full of logical and typological mistakes. Sorry but this will not work for a book that is trying to improve communication.
Well Done.......2002-04-15
One of the better business communication texts available. Students find it easier to read than the competitors'. I like the many supplements that come with it. I also like the module approach. I've taught many business communication classes and students almost always complain about the book. Not this one. I wouldn't recommend it if it didn't work. The cost is reasonable and the examples are good. One minor complaint: The web page for the book calls modules "chapters." Not a big deal compared to the many, many things that work in this book.
A Great Book!.......2001-04-07
I liked this book. It's easy to read and has lots of good examples. The best part is I can actually use what I learned.

Customer Reviews:
Two Thumbs Up! Marketing, Templates & Job Leads!.......2007-03-05
I purchased this book at a recent Women's Expo. I can't wait to get started with some of the unique marketing techniques Ms. Shirah suggested (some I never would have considered). I also found the 40 or so templates, job leads with website addresses, info on project bidding and sample letters extremely helpful. I think she did an excellent job in the writing of this book. It's not a boring technical manual, but a quick & easy read with practical info and examples that can easily be applied. I give this TWO THUMBS UP!
Wealth of Accurate Info.......2007-03-05
I can attest that many hours of research as well as 18+ years of practical experience went into the development/writing of this book. It was professionally edited by an LSU English instructor, so the errors referenced by Nepal are few, if any. After three years, I still find the wealth of information contained within the pages of this 1st Edition applicable. The 3rd Edition will be available shortly on Amazon.
Full of information...and typos!.......2005-06-10
As a court reporting student I occasionally take on a transcription job for a little extra income. I bought Ms. Shirah's book hoping to learn a little more about the business of home-based transcription. The book turned out to be incredibly thorough and super informative, a valuable resource. In that respect, I almost feel bad about giving it three stars instead of five. So why did I?
Unfortunately, the book is riddled with typos and fairly obvious grammatical mistakes. As a court reporter, scopist, transcriptionist, or proofreader, our long-term success is completely derived from our work product. Professional-looking business cards, invoices, and information packets are wonderful tools. However, our most important business card -- the one that will determine if we remain successful -- is simply a good, clean transcript (or other piece of written work).
When I'm reading (especially something that I've spent money on), I lose a little confidence in the writer with each typographical error, misspelled word, or basic grammatical mistake that I encounter. By the end of this book I was definitely disappointed.
I am returning this book for the aforementioned reasons, but I have to say, the little boxes containing Bible scripture at the bottom of many of this book's pages were unprofessional, irrelevant, and just plain irritating.
Letýs Make Some Money!.......2004-02-01
Have you ever wanted to step out of the corporate America shadow and make it on your own? This may be just the book for you. Designed with the entrepreneur in mind, this book delivers sound advice to those wishing to utilize their typing, administrative and organizational skills.
The information within the book is compact, but thorough and guides the reader through all the necessary steps from inception to finish. No stone goes unturned in this quick, but very informative read. From start-up tips to financing options, this resource should prove very handy for the aspiring home-based worker.
Sandra Shirah nails it right on the head with this guide. This book was well thought out, researched and executed with extreme professionalism. Clear, concise and detailed...a sure-fire way to help the transition into self-employment smooth as silk. For all you entrepreneurs, you can't go wrong with this one. My next question - what are YOU waiting on?

Book Description
IN MIXED COMPANY has shown a substantial increase in popularity and acclaim with each successive edition. Consequently, in the Fifth Edition, the author preserved the essence of previous versions, and expanded somewhat the central unifying theme that cooperation in small groups is usually superior to competition. In Mixed Company thoroughly addresses the theme of cooperation in small groups. The communication competence model continues to guide discussions of key small group concepts and processes. Systems theory also remains as a key theoretical component of the text and finally, an extensive discussion and analysis of power in small groups continues to separate IN MIXED COMPANY from other textbooks.

Not Recommended.......2007-08-19
This book was not very good written wise. The book is not recommended because it's sometimes, if not the majority of the time hard to grasp the concept. I would not use it for a Small Group Communication course like I had to use it for. The chapters are long and full of mumbo jumbo in my opinion. Not recommended for use.
Great Combination of Theory and Practice........2004-11-17
Over the past several years I've had to read several text books, especially those having to do with speech communication. The majority of these speech communication books I have had to read are long, dry, and dull. They tend to be filled with all sorts of theories and very little actual real-life experience examples or practice. COMMUNICATION IN GROUPS isn't like that and does one of the best jobs for a textbook of combining the theories behind small group communication with vivid, real-life examples to illustrate the ideas. The book lays out the format for working in small groups, explains how and why small groups are formed, the decisions that small groups have to make, problems that small groups face, and principles of how a group can work together to complete their project and make a presentation. Terms are defined in easy-to-understand language and examples are relevant and applicable. The book is fairly easy to read and unlike most textbooks I have forced myself to read, I actually enjoyed reading COMMUNICATION IN GROUPS. I would recommend this text for any small group communication class or anyone interested in the field of small group communication.

Book Description
Many types of organizations recognize that they need to consider diverse groups to be competitive and achieve success. Dealing effectively with difference and embracing it as a positive force, rather than something to be shunned or feared, can help organizations achieve their goals. There are no clear-cut prescriptions for addressing issues related to difference, but Allen's innovative, interactive, approach to presenting matters of difference clearly spells out how constructions of social identities have impacted members of dominant and nondominant groups. Allen's exploration of social identity categories and how discourse has affected our perceptions of others, and her focus on organizations to illustrate her points, opens the door to understanding and valuing difference as a positive, enriching feature of society. This text is very user-friendly and includes questions at the end of each chapter to stimulate reflection, critical thinking, recognition, and an awareness of possibilities for change.

Book Description
Emphasizing teamwork, leadership and technology, this book distinguishes itself in two major ways: its emphasis on teamwork and leadership skills and its integration of ethics and diversity throughout. This book is especially timely because of the recent attention given to teams in business and industry, the examination of technology's role in small group communication, and the growing awareness that professionals need to examine their own leadership competence and understand the ethical and social implications of the groups in which they participate.

Book Description
Few behavioral processes are more central to the development and maintenance of intimate relationships than the communication of affection. Indeed, affectionate expressions often initiate and accelerate relational development. By contrast, their absence in established relationships frequently coincides with relational deterioration. This text explores the scientific research on affection exchange to emerge from the disciplines of communication, social psychology, family studies, psychophysiology, anthropology, and nursing. Specific foci include the individual and relational benefits (including health benefits) of affectionate behavior, as well as the significant risks often associated with expressing affection. A new, comprehensive theory of human affection exchange is offered, and its merits relative to existing theories are explored.
