Catherine Harris - Great Book.......2004-09-13

The author does a great job at providing the information necessary for Teleocommunications Management. I'm a manager with SBC a large telco in St. Louis. The only item I see missing from this book as with other books is the importanace of the ability to manage management. As a telecom manager, I'm not very good at managing people or admitedly have much knowledge of telecom, but I'm great at managing my management which has allowed me to progress. This book needs to not only reflect the managerial concepts of technology, but of salesmanship and the real world scenerios I run into every day. I do however feel this is a great reference for general telecommunications information and would recommend people read it.

A great book of enterprise telecommunication system design.......2001-08-30

I think the book covers a complete discussion of every telecommunication facility development topic. The book starts from basic issues, such as selecting equipments and using them, to the cost analysis of develop the system. This makes the book comfortable for telco manager who never did business telecommunication system development before. I think this book is perfect for every telco manager. This book is, I think, also suitable for engineers and technicians to open and broaden the cost analysis of systems developed. I think the author is an expert in enterprise telecommunication system design and knows what he is doing.

One-stop gateway to the telecom world, but don't stop here........2000-07-30

I am the officer technical lead for a 50-person military intrusion detection operation. I read Mr Green's book to get a broader understanding of the telecom world, of which network intrusion detection occupies a small but highly visible part. This immense book (774 pages of text, plus URLs, acronyms, and a glossary) addressed nearly every topic I had encountered reading communications magazines, speaking with the telecom industry, and researching the Web. While no single book can provide the depth needed for truly understand a specific technology, Mr Green's work provided the foundation for future research. For example, after getting the context for SS7, I may now buy "Signalling System #7, 3rd Edition" by Travis Russell. I didn't give the book five stars, as I was not completely comfortable absorbing the material. This is the sort of book that requires you to read the whole book twice in order to appreciate the early chapters. References to technologies like ATM or frame relay in the first half of the book make much more sense after reading chapters dedicated to those issues. If Mr Green had given me slightly more to grasp while reading the early material, or had perhaps organized the book with the telecom novice in mind, I may have given five stars. Nevertheless, if you're looking for one-stop shopping for telecommunications, I highly recommend this book. Don't be fooled by the "business" classification on the dust jacket -- this book is a technical volume, with protocol headers and other details included. Great work Mr Green!

Technical and Readable.......2000-04-01

The Irwin Handbook of telecommunications is both technical and readable. It is an excellent text for telecommunication students,managers, and vendors. The field of telecommunications is rapidly evolving.In the future ,jobs and fortunes will be won and lost by those who apply winning technologies. Consider this book a score card. You cannt tell the players without a scorecard.

The best book on telecommunications I have ever read........1999-10-17

I read this book about a year or so ago, and I have been looking for it since then. It is the best book on telecommunications I have ever read. It goes into great depth of Switching, SS7, VMBs, PBXs, Centrex, ISDN, etc. Definitely a good buy.

A Great Reference For Telecom and Data Technologies.......1998-06-20

This book covers all of the existing and developing technologies in voice and data communications.

This book had lots of good ideas for reasonably priced places to eat in NY. A few were already out of business though. It would have also been nice to have a map to more easily find the locations. Nice reviews though.

Deliciously comprehensive guide.......2005-08-03

I was first introduced to Robert Sietsema's excellent taste in the Village Voice, when it featured the top 100 Italian restaurants in New York City.

Several amazing Italian experiences later, I knew I had to find more of his recommendations. When I stumbled across this guide, I felt as though I'd hit the jackpot. It features practically any cuisine you can think of, from Venezuelan to Tunisian with concise descriptions and suggestions of which entrees to order.

The best part of the guide is that the restaurants featured are generally priced below $20 per person, a godsend in one of the most expensive cities in the world! I immediately dined at a restaurant I'd found in the guide and was bowled over by the quality and amount of food I received for the amount I paid.

This is a must for any New Yorker who isn't afraid to experiment with different cuisines.

Right on the Money.......2005-06-25

We have now tried many listings in this book, and were only disappointed on one occassion (even then the food was not bad... just not noteworthy). This book has pointed out many hole-in-the-walls we've been walking past for years, like Snack on Thompson, or Soul Fixin or 34th, that were just amazing. Even in areas where we thought we had favorites (like curry hill) the recommendations in this book topped them all (Chennia Garden). Its true there is some risk that some places might be out of business, especially in NY, but none of our attempts have found a closed shop. The only negative about this book for Manhattenites is that many listings are in the outter boroughs, but believe me, once you've experienced this book it will make you want to get on the subway.

More to NYC eating than Zagat.......2005-04-22

This leads a curious eater away from the formula and predictable eateries in Manhattan to inexpensive and delicious places in outlying neighborhoods. Highly recommended.

Excellent for my tastes, and probably yours.......2004-10-07

While perhaps not as streamlined as some others like the Zagat Survey, this is my favorite restaurant guide of the five or six I own. Its priority is the same as mine: good and interesting food, rather than decor, service or even "star quality." Most of the selections are very affordable (for New York City), which helps.

In my area so far, I've tried two or three restaurants in three ethnic groupings. This guide has been accurate: the restaurant which the guide features in each group has been the best, and only in one case the most expensive.

My only complaint would be that browsing for a particular type of ethnic food isn't always fast. The groups are logical but not totally intuitive, so it may take a few minutes to locate Indian food in the "South Asian" section. It's all here, though, from any sub-category of Chinese to Uzbekistani.

I am very familiar with Homework Rules and Homework Tools. The book makes sense. It
can be the foundation for building homework policies in school and at home.
The unique thing about the Rules and Tools book is the author provides
ongoing support. Your staff is not left out in the cold after they read the
book. They can actually get their questions answered by Dr. Wendt on an as
needed basis. This book is a "must have" for teachers administrators and
parents. Our Middle School PTA representatives have taken a real interest in
the Rules and Tools approach.

Outstanding.......2000-07-12

I have a son who is intelligent, but who lacks the motivation to reach his potential. I've tried a number of things to get this kid to complete his assignments and begged him to pay attention in class. His teacher knew his potential but was unable to draw it out of him as well. I bought the book, studied it closely, implemented many of the ideas and my son's performance in school has been absolutely refreshing. The techniques for getting him to do his homework worked plus - now that he's spent some time on the schoolwork, he's actually found that some of it's actually interesting. Many thanks to the author for his work in this field. Our family thanks you.

Homework Rules and Tools is a Winner!.......2000-03-25

As principal of a school for students with disabilities- learning and emotional, I am always looking for new information- research-based, that I can pass along to the teachers and parents of my students. The number one problem faced by these folks is the dilemna of getting these students to do their homework! The bottom line that if a child does his homework, he will pass. If he does not, he will most likely fail. There have been some books written about how to get children to complete this task, and I have read all of them. However, they all lack one key component: they see the lack of homework completion as an academic task...Mr. Wendt, in his book, sees it as as a disciplinary problem, which may be due in part to the lack of control the parent has over the child. Mr. Wendt, whom I have had the pleasure of listening to on one of his speaking engagements, helps the parent gain control of not just the homework problem, but of the home as well. His book could be called a "throw back" to the days when the children listened to and respected authority. Instead of taking away things from the child, when they do not complete their tasks, give them things...like more work to do. Keep them busy! When one thinks about this simple strategy, it may sound backwards, but how many times have you, as a parent, taken away something from your child, only to have them shrug and say, "I don't care"? The practical, common sense and easy to follow approaches outlined in this book are a marvel! As an educator, I wonder why I didn't of these strategies myself. I bought 10 books after I heard Mr. Wendt speak, and gave them to parents who I felt needed the support. Seven of those 10 have called to personally thank me for this fountain of wisdom, and have noted a dramatic imporvement in their homes- both academically and behaviorally. What I like the most about this book is that it puts the burden on the CHILD to do the work, not the parent. This is something that will help the child well after he graduates from school. These are called life skills, and as one who works with children on a daily basis, there are not many parents or children who could not benefit from the great ideas in this book!

Provides an essential view of career counseling.......2004-07-14

As an instructor of career counseling, it has been difficult to find a volume that covers the field sufficiently. Until now. This book is outstanding. It is extremely thorough and well written. The only issue is that it is about 10 years old. An updated edition would make this the perfect text for a master's level course is career counseling. Each chapter ends with an excellent case example that my students have found to be enlightening!

Misleading Title.......2002-01-05

I bought the book and feel cheated. The title of the book is misleading. The first 48 pages of text are very poor. One can get much better information browsing the internet, free.
We could consider the book as a directory but, for a dynamic sector as the barter sector, it became fast outdated. Besides, I do not believe it ever was very useful as a dyrectory.
