With the recent Electronic Signatures in Global and National Commerce Act, public key cryptography, digital signatures, and digital certificates are finally emerging as a ubiquitous part of the Information Technology landscape. Although these technologies have been around for over twenty years, this legislative move will surely boost e-commerce activity. Secure electronic business transactions, such as contracts, legal documents, insurance, and bank loans are now legally recognized. In order to adjust to the realities of the marketplace, other services may be needed, such as a non-repudiation service, digital notary, or digital time-stamping service. The collection of these components, known as Public Key Infrastructure (PKI), is paving the way for secure communications within organizations and on the public Internet.

So begins Appendix F in Vacca's book. The entirety of the book defines that critical handshake, which has been made so much more complex by Internet freedom and opportunities. Layers of certification and handshaking, both online and offline, hashing, third parties, CA's.

Vacca includes costings, comparatives, definitions, implementation instructions, and white papers written by others with expertise in the area.

Previously a developer and implementor, and now a user, I wish that we had had this information then when we were implementing PGP, and I can only hope that my host sites now are compliant.

As usual, John writes a very timely book on contemporary IT issues. Most people are still afraid to use their credit cards on the net and businesses have huge constraints in terms of what can and can't be done through the web. As the rules of the game toughen for the every-ready hacking minds, government are also cracking down on such culprits, however, for the average user of electronic commercial transactions, there needs to be a stronger feeling that their money is safe. John's PKI book helps to educate those with this understandable concern, that it may now be getting safer to do business on the net.

This dictionary is fun and gorgeous! Great format: very light and ergonomic having over 500 pages of invaluable information! Clever design. Everyone in computer industry should have it on the desk, read it during lunch break, have it as a contemporary coffee-table book. You will learn something new even if you think you know all about it. It may open your eyes on terms you have used incorrectly. I am webdesigner with years of experience and I have always thought that "hacker" is a negative hero in the Internet jargon, but I was wrong according to Netlingo Dictionary... I believe that it's newest Net dictionary out there.

A Handy, Accessible Guide for Every Computer User.......2002-06-06

The Netlingo dictionary gives me an enormous assortment of Internet, computing, telecom, and networking terms for reference. The definitions are written in a laid-back, conversational tone. It's as readable and friendly as you can get in this technical area, but it doesn't get condescending or cutesy. I wind up reading the surrounding terms after I've looked something up. I've recommended it to my parents because any computer user will benefit from having the dictionary as he or she moves up the learning curve. Plus, the chat acronyms, smilies, and assicons are hilarious ;-)

NetLingo has become a wonderful resource for me in understanding what my 'web guys' are talking about. I am somewhat computer saavy, but sometimes get my cookies confused with my bytes. It is nice to finally have a reference beside my 14 year old nephew. I'm getting a copy today for my home office.

I purchased the book and found it helpful in all other areas except pricing. Pricing is key and yet the authors brush over it very vaguely. In the book, the authers state that they can be reached for any additional information needed to price your services. I went to their website and have written several letters with no reply. So, go ahead and but don't expect the authors to deliver on additional support.

This book totally misses the obvious!.......2003-11-09

The author accords interest payments due 20 or 30 years in the future the exact same value as cash in hand today. It appears that there is NO time value for money.

I don't disagree with the premise that many families are better served by prepaying their mortgages than by spending surplus family cash flow, but the Cunningham's "proof" of that wisdom is such a far fetched reach, that the entire book is not suitable for anyone wanting to understand the most basic concepts of money, finance and investing. It misleads the reader and denies the advantages of saving and investing money.

A "proof" of the foolishness of the author's basic premise is this reader's intuitive answer to a hypothetical offer to accept employment from an employer today; but not to receive today's wages until 25 years in the future. No interest, no compounding; just payment of today's wages deferred until middle age.... No thanks.

The third chapter describes and analysed the domestic environments for Japanese multinational companies, product development strategies, financial system, manufacturing process and cross-cultural managements. The fourth chapter analysed the expansions of Japanese multinational companies across the world and their performances. The fifth chapter analysed the impacts of Japanese multinational companies on their host nations and on Japan itself regarding employments, investments, production and technology. The sixth chapter analysed the strategic management styles of Japanese multinational companies and in particular the behaviours of Nissan, Toyota and Honda motor corporations. A Perfect Fit.......2006-08-08

I am an American working for the top Japanese executives at a Japanese-owned company in the U.S. I landed this job due to 18 years prior experience working with the Japanese.

Many things have changed in the Japanese-American working atmosphere since this book was published in 1992. The younger Japanese are much more open, pro-American and savvy. And, at least in my company, the Japanese have made a great effort to apply "when in Rome." But still, with many older Japanese (50+) expatriates working in America, there can be cultural misunderstandings. I've personally experienced several embarrassing situations that might have been avoided if I had read this book earlier.

An unexpected part of my job has been as a liaison between the Japanese and Americans, fielding questions that the Americans have about the Japanese and visa versa. So, because of this book, I can better answer these questions, and my position here has therefore been gaining in value.

Author, Robert M. March, has done a great deal to improve international relations - this book would go far to help relationships anywhere. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to work for the Japanese.

From the supplier: Japanese corporations are fielding their own candidates in local government elections and ensuring their victory by coercing their employees to vote for their candidates. This is done by the firms to make sure that corporate interests are well-represented in government affairs. The corporate election rigging has adversely affected democracy in Japan.
