Emerging from the tradition of Marshall, Knight, Keynes, and Shackle, Time, Ignorance, and Uncertainty in Economic Models is concerned with the character of formal economic analysis when the notions of logical or mechanical time and probabilistic uncertainty and the relatively complete knowledge basis it requires, are replaced, respectively, by historical time, and nonprobabilistic uncertainty and ignorance. Examining that analytical character by constructing and exploring particular models, this book emphasizes doing actual economic analysis in a framework of historical time, nonprobabilistic uncertainty, and ignorance.

Donald W. Katzner begins with an extensive investigation of the distinction between potential surprise and probability. He presents a modified version of Shackle's model of decision-making in ignorance and examines in considerable detail its "comparative statics" and operationality properties. The meaning of aggregation and simultaneity under these conditions is also explored, and Shackle's model is applied to the construction of models of the consumer, the firm, microeconomics, and macroeconomics. Katzner concludes with discussions of the roles of history, hysteresis, and empirical investigation in economic inquiry.

Time, Ignorance, and Uncertainty in Economic Models will be of interest to economists and others engaged in the study of uncertainty, probability, aggregation, and simultaneity. Don't waste your money.......2002-01-26

This book was probably very good about 10 years ago. However, companies now use the Internet, Electronic Resumes and specific software to look for qualified applicants. This book touches maybe 2 pages on this new approach to job hunting. To be competitive you need to know how to follow the technological revolution of electronic resumes. If you plan to work for a mom and pop company the old style would probably suffice but if your looking to work for a Fortune 500 company forget it!

I am planning on changing careers, so I have been reading everything I can on resume writing. This book helped me focus the attention on my unique skills and how to market them to potential employers. I have revised my resume since reading the book (which comes with questions to help you find your strengths). Truthfully, I haven't gotten a job offer, but that most likely is due to my location, which is several hundred miles from my present location. I intend to look up Haldane and Assoc. when I get to New Jersey. I would recommend this book to anyone who needs to re-market him/herself.

I was very disappointed with this book.

The writing is unclear, and the focus of the book is for British tourism businesses only. It should've said something like that on the title of the book before I plunked my money down for it. Not a cheap paperback, either.

Punchy, concise, straight to the point, well thought out.......1999-06-04

After trying two other self-help courses, this course was a refreshing change in what I previously had seen. The course is just as advertised. Don't expect to become a Russian "expert" by this course, BUT you will be able to pick up many very useful phrases and words, rapidly.

If I were to custom order a course with the phrases I would like to have, this course would be it! Other courses I have tried teach you 'very useful' things like "I watch Russian TV", or "I speak Russian", or "my mother makes mushroom soup" early in the course, most of these are not very useful because I don't speak Russian very well, and I do not watch Russian TV, and my mother does not make mushroom soup. These other courses take a more academic approach, and will get you a greater level of expertise -- after a (much longer)while. In one other course I tried, the numbers don't show up until much later in the book (page 100), and numbers are basic to getting along.

If you are going into Russia, the Ukraine or other Former Soviet Union countries on an intermittent basis, and you don't intend to live there for extended periods, this course is just what Doctor Zhivago ordered! Well, heck, even if you are staying a while, this course is great, because it will enable you become functional in a very short time. You will be able to get food and drink, read common signs, such as rest room signs (so that you do not enter the rest room of the opposite pursuasion!), and also read the exit, entry or no smoking signs, get directions, make polite comments, such as "please" and "thank you" and "excuse me" in a very short time.

The course is short, 6 lessons with phonetic spelling of the Russian, which is especially helpful because some of the words and phrases are real tongue-twisters. (Try "Molodoia Chilovek" 5 times fast!) The tapes are well done by professional people and they are easy to follow. The tapes give plenty of pauses for your practice.

Not for people with too much education or life experience.......2007-08-19

The tests in this book would probably work best for someone at the early college level. I say this because as an adult with a degree behind me, and years of work/life experience, I took all the tests . . . and found that I scored extremely high in every area. How does this help me? It doesn't. I believe the high scores are a result of life experience - I knew the answers - not because I am gifted in every area, but simply because I have lived long enough to learn the answers. So, in order for this test to measure a person's aptitude, they need to NOT have too much life experience. The only area in which a person may get acurate results even as an older adult is in Logic. Those questions did seem to test the way you think - can you think abstractly? That is an area that may be more difficult to "learn" - most of us are either abstract or concrete thinkers by nature.

Where do your Career Interests Lie?.......2007-08-10

If you feel like taking some assessment tests, to determine what career path is right for you, then you might enjoy this book, "Discover What Your Best At". This large paperback book was originally published in 1982, and it was then updated in 1990, and again in 1998. This book could be a useful tool for someone who is approaching the age where they need to choose a career, but are still undecided. It can also be helpful to those who have been established in the workforce for a long time, but feel that they are not properly utilizing their talents.

This is comprised of questionnaires and self- tests designed to help identify your personal skill set.I found the tests to be fairly easy overall, but I admit that there were a few questions that did require a lot more thinking through than others. The results of my tests didn't surprise me at all, and neither did the lists of recommended career occupations. Before I even took the tests, I predicted that the order I would score, from highest to lowest, would be Business, Clerical, Logic, Numeric, Social, and then Mechanical. My actual finish was Clerical, Business, Numeric, Logic, Social, and Mechanical.

This is not a book that gives advice and counseling to the interested party. It's just a book of self- tests, and a list of the occupations that match the results. The author doesn't really go into great detail about the selection of a career. This book is really meant as a starting point. Once you have an idea about the different career options that are compatible to your skill level, you can then conduct more research on those careers and decide if they are really best for you.

Overall, this is a decent book, and I think it will be most valuable to high school graduates who are curious about their own skills and aptitudes. For established workers, it probably won't tell you anything that you don't already know about yourself. Because of this, I can only rate this an average book overall.

DON'T Discover What You're Best at!.......2007-05-24

This book just gives you the standard little logic tests and addition problems and so on, minor skill tests. If you have any experience at all, you already know how to do most of these things--or you need to finish high school. I can do those things, because I have had to, not because I am 'best' at them. This book was absolutely no help to me.

Reveal what you can do.......2007-04-18

I worked with this book along with "Do What You Are" by Paul D. Tieger, Barbara Barron-Tieger, and fortunately found out a clear career direction.

This book is to test your aptitudes, i.e. the inner abilities to finish task. There are six types of aptitudes: business, clerical, logical, mechanical, numerical and social. After running a profound test you'll see how you score on each category. And each of the comprehensive careers listed requires specific kinds of aptitudes(either one, two, or three), so you'll know what you're able to do. And those not-easy-to-guess-what-it-means questions make the scores result not from personal preferences but the underlying inner capability. (Unlike some other tests it doesn't let your interests interfere with the decision-making)

But after finding out the proper careers you've got to do the research because this book only gives an outlined information about each one.

Since this book is only about capable careers, options are wide. So I also used "Do What You Are" to figure out what sorts of careers fit the type of functioning of my brain. Combined with aptitudes and personality type I narrowed the focus and essence of the suitable career turned out to be very close to what I felt like doing when I was a kid according to my mom. I now know where should I head to.

I recommend it!
