Half a Book.......2006-08-22

This book provides a few interesting concepts and Cyndi Dale writes well. The quiz that drives the book is interesting and seems relatively thorough. She even attempts to round things about by providing career advice and magnetizing techniques. Someone with more knowledge than me has suggested that the chakra money types bear more than a passing resemblance to the major arcana of the tarot. Since I have no knowledge of or interest in the tarot, I don't know if this is true or not.

Where the book falls down is in the application she suggests, based on your chakra money style(s). Your strongest chakra patterns are used to indicate your money personality and to suggest actions to improve your results. Esoteric suggestions are made in an offhand manner, like she is telling you to go make a cheese sandwich. Here are a couple examples that left me scratching my head.

5. Direct fifth chakra communication skills to hear what spiritual guides or the Divine has to say.

From page 89:

- Learn your lessons from the past. As a Shaman, you can read the Akashic Records, the history annals of time containing everything you or someone else has ever done, said, or thought. Want to avoid mistakes you made a long time ago? Read about them--and learn!

From page 106:

8. Eighth chakra: Walk as the Shaman walks--between worlds--to figure out your choices and to gain spirit-based assistance in implementing your decision.

OK, so I've heard of the Akashic Records but that doesn't mean I know how to read them, if they exist. How do I direct 5th chakra communications? How do I walk between worlds; is it "simply" astral projection?

This confusion would suggest that either the quiz is an inaccurate tool (I believe I filled it out honestly) or the implication is that, based on my types, I should already have divined how to do these things. Either could be the case but the very least that could be done, short of actually providing some guidance, would be to provide suggested readings.

This leads me to the conclusion that this is an intriguing "half book."

Peter Kahle writes with wit and experience. He has the kind of knowledge about selling books that is based on compassion as well as calculation. Naked at the Podium is a very useful tool for those who seek stimulating ideas on how to be successful in
merchandising their product. No author should make a presentation without reading this first.

I Learned to Embrace My Nervousness.......2003-10-06

I purchased NAKED AT THE PODIUM a few years ago at the first writing conference I attended. Though I knew it would be a while before I'd need the advice the book offered, I felt I'd better get it anyway just in case it wasn't available 5 years down the road when I'd actually need it.

While I'm still not far enough along in my writing career to be out on book tour, I was recently asked to deliver a 30-minute presentation to about 100 writing peers. In all my nervousness, I studied NAKED AT THE PODIUM like mad, learning how to breathe, assume a stage presence, and embrace my nervousness. My copy of the book aged rather nicely, with blue highlights, pencil underlining, and stars placed strategically throughout the columns next to all the gems of information.

Not only was the book enjoyable, but it helped me tremendously. When it came time for the presentation, my words didn't get all stuck in my throat like they usually do when I speak to large groups. And, the coolest part was that people were taking notes and actually learning from what I was saying (instead of sitting there with that squeemish feeling of watching somebody struggle up on the stage)! In fact, several people came up to me afterwards to tell me how much they got out of it.

Anyway, it was a real thrill...maybe I don't hate public speaking as much as I thought I did! In fact, I'm now proactively looking for more such engagements.

I owe it all to Pete and Melanie and the creation of such a wonderful reference tool.

After reading "Luxury Leisure for Less", I found myself getting excited about all the low-cost activities I would have on my kitchen calendar in a couple of months. I think this book has timeless information that can be used by anyone who does not want to spend a lot of money to have fun. The information provided in this book could be used in the city or in the country--it is universal information. I even plan to use some of the basics leisure for less tips during my next vacation to Paris.

A fantasic book. The first book I've come across that treats the online financial world as truly international (life beyond the NYSE!). Good section on choosing an online broker. The directory of investment web sites at the back of the book is very comprehensive, and the rating system is useful.

the authors identify the economic conditions udnerlying the choice of the optimal scheme of monetary co-ordination under an exchange rate agreement. Their empirical findings support the case for the adoption of a scheme which relies on the control of area-wide money supply.

The EURO has now been in place for more than two years, but only the future will tell if the ECB can manage the EURO currency in the long-term. This book discusses the economic principals underlying the demand for money, and the possibilities to recover its properties by means of multivariate time series analysis. It applies the outcome to the whole EURO area as well as to France. While for the aggregate, a money demand function can be specified and be shown to have good forecasting properties, this fails in the French case. This book puts forth economic arguments to explain this. The presentation specifically outlines all means that have been used to cope with shifts in coefficients of the cointegration relations. A separate chapter examines unit root tests for time series with level shifts. This includes detection of break points, provision of test statistics, graphical evaluation of the empirical models and illustration of the procedure with a large set of international macroeconomic data.

I bought ROOM FOR A SINGLE LADY in a downtown Dublin bookstore for my "airplane read" back to the United States. It was a great choice and marvelous entertainment. It is a tale of family survival, both financial and social in depressed 1950's Ireland. Oh no, not another tale of making it through the Irish childhood and adolescence. Well there is always room for one more for us grandchildren of the old sod and this one had a bit more laghter than tears. To improve dwindling monetary circustances the Rafferty's of Dublin decide to take in a border--a genteel single lady who not only can contribute to the family's finances but can introduce their three daughters to some of society's better refinements. The border concept turns into a revolving door of various lovable, wacky, entertaining characters who bring great change and insight to the entire Rafferty family. From serious, sad Selena with her caring ways, to glamorous, trashy Sissy, to Ruth, the Communist, and Minnie Mankivitz, frugal and sensible, yet blind when it comes to men, the Rafferty's lives wind through complex delightful dramas! Seen through the eyes of Rose, the youngest daughter, ROOM FOR A SINGLE LADY details the effects of sharing one's home with strangers, and how one family grew thanks to the laughter, tears, anger, and wacky fun that resulted from letting out the spare room to these most bizarre group of women. This tale is not as dramatic as ANGELA'S ASHES or as angry as A STAR NAMED HENRY but is a delightful and entertaining saga of some uproarious days in the life of an Irish family!
