Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars An incredibly basic review - - .......2006-12-06

If you watch solar commercials on TV you will understand the depth of this book. Want to figure out if Solar Electric is *Really* a good idea for you? This isn't the book. There's a bunch of cheerleading for the concept but no real details to give you the basis for deciding.

If you want to go solar because it's 'green' then skip this book - the authors think so too and you already know enough to proceed. If you want to determine if it's cost effective - buy something else.

On the other hand, there are a bunch of ideas I hadn't run into - how to use solar power to light your house number - how to bake beans in the backyard without using the stove, etc. You might like it for those insights!

5 out of 5 stars Great Basic Guide.......2006-11-15

This is a great guide for people wanting a basic understanding of solar energy and its use in a home application. It references a lot of resources in the book. It just touches on commercial applications but this book is geared to residential.

5 out of 5 stars Practical, non-technical introduction to solar energy.......2005-09-02

This is a well-organized and interesting introduction to home-related applications of solar energy. Written for the lay person, it contains no math beyond a few simplified cost calculations. The main topics are solar hot water and pool heating; solar electricity; solar cooking, cooling, and space heating; and financing/economics/incentives. The book also has nice illustrations, more than 50 photos, and a well-chosen resource list and glossary.

5 out of 5 stars Timely Advice.......2003-08-17

Sklar and Sheinkopf know their stuff. They offer practical advice on how to install and use solar energy. The book includes information on tax breaks and how to buy everything you need. This book is a hands-on guide that takes you through the whole process.

    Book Description

Each year in the United States, millions of mass-produced greeting cards proclaim their occasional messages: "For My Loving Daughter," "On the Occasion of Your Marriage," and "It's a Boy!" For more than 150 years, greeting cards have tapped into and organized a shared language of love, affection, and kinship, becoming an integral part of American life and culture. Contemporary incarnations of these emotional transactions performed through small bits of decorated paper are often dismissed as vacuous clichés employing worn-out stereotypes. Nevertheless, the relationship of greeting cards to systems of material production is well worth studying and understanding, for the modern greeting card is the product of an industry whose values and aims seem to contradict the sentiments that most cards express. In fact, greeting cards articulate shifting forms of love and affiliation experienced by people whose lives have been shaped by the major economic changes of the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. A Token of My Affection shows in fascinating detail how the evolution of the greeting card reveals the fundamental power of economic organization to enable and constrain experiences of longing, status, desire, social connectedness, and love and to structure and partially determine the most private, internal, and intimate of feelings.

Beautifully illustrated, A Token of My Affection follows the development of the modern greeting card industry from the 1840s, as a way of recovering that most elusive of things -- the emotional subjectivity of another age. Barry Shank charts the evolution of the greeting card from an afterthought to a traditional printing and stationery business in the mid-nineteenth century to a multibillion-dollar industry a hundred years later. He explains what an industry devoted to emotional sincerity means for the lives of all Americans. Blending archival research in business history with a study of surviving artifacts and a literary analysis of a broad range of relevant texts and primary sources, Shank demonstrates the power of business to affect love and the ability of love to find its way in the marketplace of consumer society.

Plan on hitting the town on your next trip to Los Angeles? Be sure to take along Rommelmann's Los Angeles Bar and Nightlife Guide, with its more than 150 listings of lounges, pubs, music venues, hotel bars, and seedy dives in and around the City of Angels. Nancy Rommelmann, the nightlife columnist for L.A. Weekly, has been scouring the scene for years, so she knows her stuff. Entries (written in a witty, irreverent tone) are listed in alphabetical order, and while photos would enhance the copy, Rommelmann's detailed descriptions of the décor, the crowd, and the vibe more than gets the job done. Looking for a trendy bar? Try Lola's ("a perennially popular hangout of the fit and fabulous and those who aspire to be"). A place with sea views? Head to the bar at Shutters on the Beach ("the sartorially gifted Westside crowd is mixed with expense-account tourists"). Crave something laid-back? Sip a pint at Molly Malones ("a well-worn local spot with Celtic folksingers"). The bars are also listed according to various categories (gay, karaoke, pickup scenes, places to spot models). If you need help finding the hot spots, you'll find this guide useful. --Jill Fergus

Every Los Angelino I know gives this guide serious praise. Nancy Rommelmann's choices and reviews go beyond the mainstream (though you can take dates, even work meetings). These places are cool, original and the guide lets you know exactly (but with humor and style) what to expect.

          Book Description

Trade is one of the most powerful forces linking our lives, and a source of unprecedented wealth. Yet millions of the world’s poorest people are being left behind. Increased prosperity has gone hand in hand with mass poverty. Already obscene inequalities between rich and poor are widening. World trade could be a powerful motor to reduce poverty, and support economic growth, but that potential is being lost. The problem is not that international trade is inherently opposed to the needs and interests of the poor, but that the rules that govern it are rigged in favor of the rich.

If Africa, East Asia, South Asia, and Latin America were each to increase their share of world exports by one per cent, the resulting gains in income could lift 128 million people out of poverty. In Africa alone, this would generate $70bn – approximately five times what the continent receives in aid.

In their rhetoric, governments of rich countries constantly stress their commitment to poverty reduction. Yet in practice rigged rules and double standards lock poor people out of the benefits of trade, closing the door to an escape route from poverty.

Reform of world trade is only one of the requirements for ending the deep social injustices that pervade globalization. Action is also needed to reduce inequalities in health, education and the distribution of income and opportunity, including those inequalities that exist between women and men. However, world trade rules are a key part of the poverty problem; fundamental reforms are needed to make them part of the solution. Oxfam’s campaign, Make Trade Fair, aims to change world trade rules so that trade can make a real difference in the fight against global poverty.

This report gives comprehensive research findings and analysis, presenting a powerful case for changes in trade laws, and a reform agenda to make these changes happen.

From the supplier: Fifty percent of the ventilation air in newer plane models are recycled instead of providing 100% fresh air. The Consumers Union tested the air on 158 commercial flights using volunteers equipped with measuring instruments for CO2 levels, temperature and relative humidity. The Boeing 757 has high levels of CO2. This could be accounted for by the recirculation of 50% of its ventilating air, low volume of individual cabin space and a design which makes it difficult for pilots to bring in additional fresh air.
