misleading title and limited strategy.......2007-03-14
Hedge funds have been in the news lately. Since for the last few years, some have done very well. So it's quite a hot topic. Also true of ETFs, which have proliferated. Wolfinger's title invokes both, in an attempt to attract as large a readership as possible. Alas, the title is somewhat misleading.
The text gives next to nothing about how hedge funds tend to operate. Instead, it is mostly about explaining what ETFs are, and why you might want to own them. One key reason, as furnished by the text, is that you can then write (i.e. sell) covered calls on them. This increases the short term income you can garner from owning an ETF.
Commendably, the author does not recommend buying of options. He says, correctly, that on average, this is a losing game. It is reassuring to read this, for it means that the book is not one of these breathless tales about how to make money quickly.
The explanation of options could have been made 20 years ago. It is fairly limited; meant for a reader with little previous experience in finance. The only truly new material concerns describing ETFs.
The author's strategy is conservative. But in its own way, also limited. To the extent that an efficient market exists for the pricing of the underlying stocks in an ETF, then the covered calls will be priced fairly accurately by Black-Scholes. But if there is an unexpected upside, then your ETF will be sold when the call expires in the money. While if there is an unexpected downside, you retain your ETF and get the call income to reduce your losses. The problem is that if you do this method long enough, you relinquish the unexpected gains. And you end up holding losers.
Good book, bad title........2005-11-04
This book is entirely useful for those with limited knowledge on Options and Exchange Traded Funds. I have to confess that before this book when I first heard ETF I thought it was one more of those great Wall Street inventions that only serves their own evil purposes.
I don't understand why people keep investing in Mutual Funds while paying high commissions for supposed great management. Most mutual fund managers are not capable to beat the darts thrown at the Wall Street Journal. People should dump their Stock Mutual Funds and put their money in ETFs.
This book will help you understand Options, so next time someone talks about Naked Calls or Covered Puts you might join the conversation and look smart.
I'm thankful with Mark Wolfinger for answering the ton of questions I had regarding this book.
The only thing I question about the book is the title, which I think is a little pretentious and when he says that most Covered Calls expire worthless, I have doubts on that.
Should be "Exchange Traded Funds 101".......2005-06-05
The newest craze in investment publishing involves something about "hedge funds." These mysterious investment vehicles (to the unsophisticated public) are seen as the investment of choice for the "rich" investor looking for outsized market gains, or a reduction in risk.
The author seemed to be taking advantage of this when he titled the book. In actuality, there is nothing more here than a basic (and I do mean basic), primer on Exchange Traded Funds, and basic options trading strategies (covered calls and short puts).
The first few chapters involve wasted pages on Modern Portfolio theory, the advantage of index funds over mutual funds, and the benefits of ETF's over traditional index funds. Anyone who is knowledgable enough to be interested in hedge fund strategies (ie. statistical arbitrage, relative value, market neutral, etc.) will find nothing here that he or she doesn't already know.
The second half on trading options on ETF's is similarly light on any interesting information. Much basic information on covered calls and short puts is covered. It wouldn't be unfair to call it simplistic.
Unfortunately, the author did not discuss the important concept of implied volatility when discussing writing strategies on ETF's. This makes certain option strategies, that normally are equivalent, less than equal when used on an ETF.
The book correctly states short puts are equivalent to covered calls, when the puts are secured by cash. If you are going to buy 500 shares and write 5 calls, it is simpler to just sell 5 puts, and hold cash to back them up.
But the author neglects to mention that options on indexes often trade at what is called an IV skew. Out of the money calls on ETF's are generally underpriced, while the puts are overpriced. This makes short puts backed by cash superior to covered calls on an ETF. But Lord help you if the market gets caught in a huge sell off, or implied volatility increases.
There was no discussion of identifying when it is prudent to sell options and when it is wise to remain unhedged. It didn't address the various follow ups to covered call/short put strategies when the stock moves adversely.
If you know absolutely nothing about ETF's, and options trading strategies, then you might find this useful. If you are looking for information on hedge fund techniques, look elsewhere.
This book has changed my outlook on investing .......2005-02-28
The market has always intrigued me. However, following the advice of well meaning, financially secure friends never brought me the success I sought. It turns out that it's much harder to pick winning stocks than I expected. Even the mutual funds I owned were disappointing. "Create Your Own Hedge Fund" really opened my eyes with insight and clear step-by-step guidance in teaching me a profitable, yet safer, way to invest.
The best two skills I gained from this book were: How to build a portfolio and how to make money using one rather simple strategy. This book gave me the necessary confidence to take control of my own finances and provided compelling reasons for doing so. I learned that ETFs (exchange traded funds) are much less expensive to own than what Wolfinger calls 'traditional mutual funds' ...and, on average, make more money.
Wolfinger clearly outlines exactly how to use ETFs and options - a topic that had always scared me. His detailed explanation of how options work convinced me that options are indeed doable. I was also pleasantly surprised to discover that I've been using "options" for years - rain checks at the grocery and auto insurance policies are both essentially options. And the best part - another surprise to me - is that options actually lessen risk. My chances of losing money are now less than they were before.
The author skillfully enables his readers to understand the rationale behind trading decisions with a multitude of examples that make the lessons come to life.
The book also contains useful background information, references and statistics to support the author's ideas. I tried it, and so far, it really works. I make my own decisions now and am happy with the results. Don't be afraid - if I can do it, so can you. As Wolfinger says, I feel like I'm running my own small fund.

The lost art of conversation ..........2006-07-24
Conversation is an "Art" and an art that almost each and everyone wants to/needs to understand and acquire. Not only to survive but to prosper as well. To some extent, this art has been lost in this new world of TV & TIVO. However, its importance cannot be underestimated. Without doubt, we owe our wealth of knowledge to our ability to communicate.
This book is all about ...
* The different elements of conversation?
* How to make conversation easy by using the PICL(Plan, Information, Compliment, Listen) approach.
* How to sow the seed for stimulating conversation(by injecting thought provoking questions).
* How to kick start a stalled conversation(by using the common currencies of conversation).
All in all, the author provides interesting ideas to start and sustain a stimulating conversation. Definitely a must read ...

When the appetizer is a good flight, pilots will go anywhere for a meal. Now they have a guideNto more than 1000 restaurants in 50 states and 16 foreign locationsNcompiled from the reviews of fellow pilots who've been there. First a well-known website, The 100 Hamburger is now available in book form. Each restaurant is reviewed for location, style, quality, service, atmosphere, transportation, and price, and awarded from one to five "burgers." A great dream book for the weekend aviator.
Customer Reviews:
We've enjoyed this..........2006-12-06
and have even given it to a fellow aviator as well. It's great for weekend trips, although I'd still recommend asking around the FBO where you fuel or tie down. Some info was out of date, but overall it's a fun book to use!
Not quite up to date .......2005-08-03
This book is fun to read. Not sure that all the information is up to date. Think I would cross check the restaurants with Google's new global search engine before I left the ground just to be sure they still exist.
My flight planning and travel Bible.......2005-04-14
The $100 Hamburger has been a primary resource for my flight planning. I use this book in conjunction with John's web site to plan my flights. The book has saved me hundreds of dollars in car rentals. It has protected my stomach from indigestion that comes from vending machine food. Every pilot needs to know which airports have easy access to good food. I don't leave the ground without it!
12/21/05 Clearly things change. Books can't stay up to date every day. I stand by John's book. If you have currency issues, then visit the supporting web site. He keeps a very up to date webpage that fulfills the upto date wishes. You should check it out. You should provide these inputs to the web page.
Good book but needs better time-lines.......2003-08-05
The reviews are ok, but they ALL need dates since you have NO idea when any of the comments were made or if they are in any kind of order. There are comments that say a particular place is open, closed, under new management, shut down for the season all for the same place and without any dates. You have NO idea what is going on. or if the comment is from 1996.
Correction.......2003-04-18
Please notice that the other reviews mentioned refer to The first edition. This is the second edition and it is totally up to date. It corrects the problems mentioned about the 1st Edition. Those reveiws are valid for the 1st Edition but not the 2nd. Any review dated before the publication date, November, 2003 of the 2nd Edition refers to the 1st Edition.
Thnaks for taking the time to place the proper reviews with the proper book.

Everything You Need to Know to Make the Executive Recruitment Process Pay Off
Executive recruiters have become increasingly important and influential in today's corporate hiring practices. Establishing and maintaining a strong relationship with the recruiter best suited to your career goals can mean the difference between finding your executive dream job and just getting by.
Now, a professional executive recruiter shares the secrets of the process-- what you should know, what you should expect, and how to land your ideal job. Smooch Reynolds provides the keys to success and answers executives' most common questions about recruiters, such as:
- How do I work with a recruiter?
- When in my career can I expect to get recruiters' calls?
- How do I find the recruiter best suited to my needs?
- How do I interview with a recruiter?
- Will a recruiter help me negotiate my compensation package?
- What sort of references do I need?
- What is appropriate, or inappropriate, to tell a recruiter?
Be Hunted! offers the insight and guidance necessary to move your career in the right direction. It dispels the myths and misconceptions about executive recruiters and offers essential tips in business etiquette, interviewing techniques, assessing your worth, and negotiating your compensation. Whether you're new to executive recruiters, or if you've worked with them before, this book is the ultimate guide to finding the recruiter-- and the job-- that's right for you.
Customer Reviews:
As bad as her name.......2005-02-01
I read this book a while ago (I was a self employed exec recruiter for fifteen years) and it still stands out as one of the silliest. The amount of information either a Manager or another headhunter will glean from this material is negligible. The pages discussing her "schedule" in which she shows us all how hard she works are so laughably self-important that you should skim them in the bookstore for humor's sake.
Yuk.......2002-11-07
Quite frankly, this book is more about negating the idea of the executive recruiters' three martini lunches rather than providing good job search tips.
Good advice while getting your feet wet.......2002-03-22
In many ways this is kind of an off kilter book - Reynolds seems to want to be aiming at the executive, but in reality I think her book is applicable to just below that level, who are just starting out in higher managerial searches. Taken from that starting point, the book is a very good overview and advice book. Much of what she says is common sense, but sometimes it's nice to have it reiterated so that we don't forget it. As someone who is going to eventually be looking for new employment and to move on up, I found it in some ways reassuring to be led step by step through things. I don't believe I learned much new, there was certainly no "ah ha!" moments. But it did assure me that the path I've been looking at is correct, and what I know is valuable. She is not afraid to touch upon those areas a lot of people are uncomfortable with - such as compensation negotiation. Reading this book is like a comfortable session with a career counselor who's there to calm you down and help you through the next step. While currently job hunting has slowed a bit, it will rebound. And anything that helps us get a leg up on the competition is appreciated.
I'm happy I did not buy it!.......2002-01-05
After seeing an interview of Ms. Reynolds on CNN's "The Neil Cavuto Show" I was interested in learning more about her. I searched the web and found her book on the Amazon.com site, with your reviews & excerpts. After reading the excerpts, and almost falling out of my chair laughing about "The Week of a Recruiter", I pondered about the last twenty years I have spent as a HEADHUNTER. Ms. Reynolds and I must have worked on two different planets - in the same profession.
I have and still read many books about career searching, the recruiting industry, etc. There are some damn good how to do it books on the market - not this one. Who needs someone to give us a minute-by-minute account of her personal and professional life - who cares! Can you help me find a good recruiter, can you help me find a good job, can you help me find an industry that won't fall apart this or next year? If you need help, buy a book by the name of "What Color Is My Parachute", I believe that is the correct title. This book gives you clear and concise information, not some obtuse opinions.
The main, and only, objective for executive search firms is to find the best candidate for their clients, not to find people jobs who want more money, bigger titles, or easyier commutes. In our twenty year history, and the many placements that we have to our credit - the best candidates that we have found for our clients are people who are happily employed at their present positions and not even thinking about looking at other opportunities. The best way to find a job is to be the very best you can at your present position, be active in your industry associations and organizations, write articles for your industry websites, magazines, etc. Be visible. Be the best you can be and the executive search industry will find you. There I just wrote my first book!
If you do happen to find yourself out of work, call a few friends and ask for any recommendations they would share with you about executive search firms that are industry related and that they have had experience with. Best of all check industry, and specific company websites, there are a chuck full of companies looking for people. Ms. Reynolds is correct in pointing out that there are differences in the types of executive search firms. It boils down to two main differences; retained & contingency. Try to work with retained search firms that have a retainer from a specific company for a specific position, as opposed to contingency firms. This will at least assure you that they are not just collecting resumes. That is what most contingency search firms send most of their time doing.
Ms. Reynolds is correct again about being open and honest with a recruiter that you trust. But you have to be very careful with whom you trust personal information. When I ask a potential candidate about their martial status, their remuneration package, whom do they report to, etc. and the answer is "I will not divulge that information", I simply thank them and hung-up. Be firm not stupid. You could be passing up that knock on the door that only comes around once, and you will never know what you missed out on.
Ms. Reynolds' book is nice but I don't think it will get you a job. When an executive search consultant does call you, be polite, be honest, and remember it is a very small world.
Thorough Primer.......2001-12-14
"Be Hunted" is a very thorough primer on the various ways one can attract the attention of search consultants. For many, this book can provide a rare and useful insight into the intricacies of the search profession, as well as the candidate/recruiter relationship. But as a seasoned search consultant myself, I believe it's important that the reader understand that "getting on the search consultant's radar screen" is only one aspect of the overall job search process.
A much more comprehensive book on this topic is "The Secrets of Executive Search ... Professional Strategies for Managing Your Personal Job Search," by Robert Melancon. "Secrets" is similar to "Be Hunted" in that both were written by seasoned executive search consultants. But "Secrets" is much broader in scope and focuses on those aspects of the overall personal search job process that really make the difference between success and failure.

Deserves more tan 5 stars !!.......2001-12-31
I am a reader of self help and positive thinking type of books. I read this particular book when it first came out in '96...almost 6 years ago....and it still remains a favorite for me. It touches on more than the common "rah rah rah" method. This book makes you realize the unbelieveable strengths that we are ALL born with, but that we don't develope. All of my life I've heard the term "mind over matter" and didn't pay it much attention. This book puts reality to that saying and now I truely understand what it means. The human mind is a God-made computer and none of us use our brain to it's fullest potential. Ms. Milteer writes with such an easy flow, that this book is hard to set down, almost like a novel!!! It's astonishing.
Excellent book that I seriously recommend to everyone....readers and non-readers. The ideas and the realization that this book brings will change your life and give you control of yourself and the situations that are presented to you....large and small.
During a week's bout with the flu, I picked this book up just to thumb through it and ended up reading it again....thank heaven. You won't have to force yourself to sit and read this one, once you get started, you'll have to force yourself NOT to be reading!
Amazing. Doing it Lee's way will change your life!.......1998-09-29
Lee Milteer's book, Success is an Inside Job, is about how to get what you want and how to reach your potential by using spiritual principles. Her techniques include using your intuition, letting go of the past by re-programming, positive self-talk, goal setting, creative visualization and habit busting to mention a few. She gives you practical "to dos". This book is an inspiration and following her techniques really works. She stresses committment to yourself and to be the best you can be. I have used these techniques and passed them on to my children. I recommend that you try them. I personally owe a great deal to Lee. Thank you!
The book to read when you are looking for real success........1998-09-25
We live in a time when we are inundated with self help books. But Lee Milteer has found the real key to success. And I don't just mean success in business and money (though she gives plenty of outstanding advice in that area, too!), but success as a person as well.
If you're going to read one book that will really make a difference in your life, this is the one.
Opens the pathway to success within each of us, with ease!.......1998-09-22
I love this book! It has helped me to easily jump over the challenges we humans unknowingly place in front of ourselves for a variety of reasons. It has awakened within me the knowlege of my own power to create success in my life.
This book reveals the biggest "blocks" to your success!.......1998-09-21
The greatest element of this book is that it helps you unleash your own internal potential. Lee helps you understand that you must not only face, but challenge your own internal dialogue -- what you constantly "tell" yourself, like... "I could never make more than $50K". This book teaches you how to focus on what you WANT instead of what you FEAR (which is what most of us do!) After reading Success is an Inside Job, I was able to reshape my ingrained belief systems... the very beliefs that kept me from fulfilling my greatest potential. Best of all, the principles outlined in this book really work. There's no hype or theory -- just practical information that has helped me feel better about myself, more excited about my future and more able to view my past failures as my signposts for success. THANK YOU LEE MILTEER!

Delves way beyond the usual 'protect your assets' focus.......2004-11-13
There are plenty of books on financial planning and savvy: what makes Stanley D. Neeleman, et.al.'s Estate Planning For The Healthy Wealthy Family special is its focus on values-based estate planning which goes beyond the usual focus on how to pass wealth tax-free to future generations. The concern here is that money passed on be used wisely: a new form of values-based planning which encourages wisdom, character growth, and even non-material values. Professor Neeleman has studied law at Brigham Young University and has extensive practical experience in tax planning, while associate co-author Carla B. Garrity Ph.D is a child psychologist and Mitchell A. Baris, Ph.D. is a family psychologist. The unusual blend of disciplines means Estate Planning For The Healthy Wealthy Family delves way beyond the usual 'protect your assets' focus.
