Customer Reviews:
This books shows you how Investment Banking works in simple terms.......2007-09-10
I really enjoyed reading and learning this book. One of the reviewers mentioned this book was the best of its kind, and it truely is. This book takes you inside on how investment banking deals are gathered and closed. I'm a commercial banker but have always been a avid follower of news in this industry. I have read Security Training and the Intelligent Investor and this was an easier read but extremely informative. I recommend this book to anyone interested or fascinated by Investment Banking.
Not bad but there are better choices.......2005-02-04
Book is not bad but expensive. For a good general overview of what bankers and other people in an M&A deal do, take a look at my work, Deal Teams by Frankel.
good guide, but also read Vault guide.......2001-09-28
This book is a good overview of the investment banking business, but it
is quite expensive. I would strongly recommend instead or in addition
the Vault Career Guide to Investment Banking.... The Vault guide includes more
detailed overviews of all the departments and functions of an investment
bank including corporate finance, M&A, sales, trading, private client
services, credit, etc. If you are a job seeker in investment banking
also try the Vault Guide to Finance Interviews, which contains actual
investment banking finance interview questions and answers and which I
found to be enormously valuable in my Wall Street job search.
I found this book the best of this kind.......2000-07-12
I am currently studying at the INSEAD MBA, France. Looking for information about the investment banking industry, I have been browsing dozens of books on the subject, but very few helped me to see both the big picture and the details of how the industry works. Fiction like Liers' Poker or Barbarians at the Gate missed the technical points and presented a very blurry picture of what investment banking is about apart from psychological or philosophical concerns. At the same time, technical books like The Industry of Investment Banking were too broad in technicalities, but narrow in the cultural issues. As I was reading "Doing Deals," I found the best industry guide of its kind, the book that provides very detailed information how the internal functions are structured, how the deals are done, how bonuses are allocated, what management practices are in place, what cultural differences one should expect between firms and between different functions within companies, what is driving the people who work at investments banks, and what personal qualities and experiences are expected from potential applicants. In addition, the book gives a lot of detail in its description of the principal industry players and the differences in their strategies. While the Vault.com guide is an absolute must read for everyone, who considers investment banking for his future career, "Doing Deals" is a much more fundamental book. True, it does not provide a list of short answers to finance interview questions, therefore adjust your expectations. What it does, however, is that it gives a very thorough and detailed description of how the industry functions and a very competent and knowledgeable analysis of strategic specifics within banking firms. While the Vault.com guide is for everyone, this book is more targeted at a seriously-minded reader.
Good, but I've read better guides.......1998-11-03
This book was useful, but I thought the Vault Reports Guide to Investment Banking was more detailed and provided an "insider" view of the firms. Plus for job seekers it has actual finance interview questions and answers.

Book Description
The primary focus of the updated, second edition has not changedit embraces the narrative or storytelling approach to the study of argumentation. The first section introduces readers to rhetorical theorists and their principles. These significant contributions to the field of argumentation and debate include Aristotle's views on audiences and the ethical character of an advocate, Burke's dramatistic theory of communication, Brockriede's metaphorical image of arguers, Fisher's narrative paradigm, Mill's guidelines for testing the causal correlation, Perelman and Obrechts-Tyteca's conception of a universal audience, Rokeach's definition of values, and Toulmin's model for developing and analyzing argument claims and his conception of arguments as field dependent. Hollihan and Baaske's discussions of these ideas and their applications are easy to follow, unencumbered by technical jargon, and illustrated with engaging examples drawn from current and well-known historical events. The key to the success of this text is the authors' superb ability to show readers how foundational principles of argumentation are used in a variety of real-world situations. The second section covers specialized contexts such as academic debates, courts of law, politics, business and organizations, and interpersonal relationships. Activities designed to stimulate critical thinking and to implement the ideas discussed are included at the end of the each chapter. The appendices provide easy access to primary sources that can be used to supplement and enhance the concepts presented in the text.

Time's Up.......2005-10-02
I purchased "Arguments and Arguing: The Products and Process of Human Decision Making, Second Edition" on Aug. 31st 2005. When I chose this book it was solely because its delivery date was 3-5days. Needless to say the book did not come into my possession until Sep.29th 2005. This delay reflected in my work as my time to prepare for college courses diminished. I am now stuck with a book I no longer need of which I payed full price. I am very unhappy with the level of accountability this web site has demonstrated. I demand compensation.

Book Description
At last . . . welcome dining help for the lone traveler
Anyone who has ever traveled alone has faced two options: ordering wildly overpriced room service, or braving unknown streets to dine alone. If one elects the latter, he or she could be greeted with rude looks, poor, indifferent service, too much noise, too little light, and disappointing food.
Finally here is a book to rescue the lone diner and put the business traveler or newcomer to Chicago at ease when making a dining decision. In Table for One: Chicago, Author Michael Kaminer rates the restaurants in terms of friendliness, service, lighting, food, wines by the glass, and comfort--all from the perspective of the single diner. He also discusses what to expect in terms of price, food preparations, and clientele.

Book Description
Taking advantage of contradictory elements in oneself and one's situation can lead to better performance all around
-- Presents a five-step process for using paradoxes to find solutions to a wide range of problems
-- Provides tools that enable people to improve actual performance when faced with seemingly contradictory goals
-- Includes case studies showing how real people have used paradoxical thinking to solve real problems
Everyone has, at one time or another, approached a daunting task and handled it with calm and focus. The successful resolution of difficult problems requires the ability to take advantage of the disparities inherent a troublesome situation. Only when one confronts and masters both sides of a contradiction can there be a "high performance" or successful outcome. Paradoxical Thinking addresses these considerations.
Fletcher and Olwyler have studied the way people succeed and found that those who understand their own paradoxical qualities are best able to deal with difficult and demanding situations. The authors' clear five-step process shows readers how to identify their own unique "core paradox" and then use it to deal with problems and opportunities in their lives.
Paradoxical Thinking empowers readers by showing when they can make more effective and positive choices in the face of negative possibilities. Readers can use this book -- filled with examples, solutions to actual paradoxical situations, and exercises -- to make satisfying and creative changes in their personal and professional lives.

Paradoxical Thinking: How to Profit from You Contradictions.......2007-01-14
The book arrived in excellent condition and on time.
Thanks
A Good Read!.......2001-11-09
Jerry L. Fletcher and Kelley Olwyler examine how you use paradoxical thinking - contradictory ways of approaching a situation. Then, they discuss ways to use your paradoxes to your strategic advantage. You can use their "pendulum" to help you recognize the positive and negative ways you express these paradoxes - so you can apply the positive actions to difficult situations. They invite readers to analyze themselves and resolve a current problem. The book can help you devise more creative solutions to personal and work situations. However, while the system is fairly straightforward, elements do seem complicated and may be difficult to apply on your own. We [...] recommend this book as a novel approach to problem solving and a worthy way to regard goal setting without the nagging voice of consistency in your ear.
Managing your personal paradox.......2001-09-09
When I heard about this book, I did not quite know what to expect. Reading things like 'How to profit from your contradictions' and 'bringing together the paradoxical sides of yourself to achieve outstanding results', I feared it might turn out to be kind of vague and superficial. But I decided to give the book the benefit of the doubt, because I quite liked Jerry Fletcher's previous book "Patterns of High Performance".
How wrong can you be in your expectations...The book turned out to be a downright fascinating read! The book describes with great clarity a very specific step-by-step method by which you can identify seemingly contradictory characteristics of yourself (the authors call this your 'core paradox'). Both of these contradictory characteristics can be expressed either in a negative way or in a positive way.
When these contradictory characteristics are expressed in their most negative way, a nightmare-scenario can follow. When this happens, a person swings back and forth between the two (negative) sides of the paradox, leaving him or her hopeless, without energy and ineffective. However, when these contradictory characteristics are expressed in their most positive way, both (positive) sides of the paradox are simultaneously present.
Because of this, you can produce creative resolutions of dilemma's that previously seemed intractable. Using a tool called 'Fletcher's pendulum', you can figure out how to get from the negative expression of your core paradox to a positive expression. How this exactly works, you should of course read in the book. It has many examples and is packed with practical wisdom. I found it extremely valuable.
Paradoxical Thinking:How to Profit from Your Contradictions.......2000-04-19
Paradoxical Thinking is a very effective step-by-step guide for really getting down to understanding the core aspects of our individual nature and how they can work together synergistically-- or cause a nightmare of inner conflict. Jerry and Kelle show us how to discover and reclaim our seemingly contradictory qualities and use them to get through apparent impasses. This book is great for self-help, for coaching, and for collaborative thinking. Recognizing my own oxymoronic nature is definitely helpful in making my way in the world. Discovering my "Nightmare Oxymoron" was a blast. I recommend it.

Customer Reviews:
New Work Opportunities by Menchin.......2005-12-30
The thrust of this work is a compendium on retirement options
for people both prior to and subsequent to a formal retirement.
Generally speaking, people retire due to incentives, health issues, different interests or mid-life career changes. The mode
of work includes flextime, P/T, job sharing or Rent an Exec.
Temporary work provides quick money, no long term commitment,
flexible work, varied jobs, new people, new skills, greater
industrial exposure etc. The criticisms of part-time work are
that the employee does not vest pension, there is no job
stabilization and that the arrangement is an employment at will.
A strength of this work is that it provides practical advice
on how to secure temporary employment to supplement pension
income. It will be helpful to anyone-at any age- seeking to
make money on a P/T basis. The work is easy to read and the
cost is modest for the tremendous value of the information
content.

How to Grow Your Business on the Internet offers techniques and ideas that you can use immediately to boost sales on the Web. You'll find the standard Net overview, with thorough tutelage on how to get connected and how to acquire a fast connection. Emery then quickly moves into deliberative discussions, explaining how you can reap the benefits of the Internet for your business and set realistic online goals. This text goes beyond discussing Web sites to include instructions on how to use e-mail, mailing lists, and search engines. How to Grow Your Business on the Internet also supplies tips on how to market, publicize, and advertise your business online as well as how to generate strategic information using the Internet. Firewalls, encryption, credit card transactions, fraud, and digital cash are covered in depth but not in overly technical terms. A particularly useful chapter uses examples from actual businesses to explain why Internet projects fail and how to make sure yours doesn't.
Customer Reviews:
You Can Benefit By Reading This Book.......2006-01-23
It has become obvious to business people everywhere that the advantages of doing business on the Internet can no longer be ignored. Even a one person operation must look into the possibilities. This book is probably the one best way of learning the pros and cons. It is a big book, 692 pages, a full 2-inches thick. It is not a manual for understanding computers, but rather a business guide to utilizing the Internet to sell products and services, to secure instant customer feedback, conduct competitive intelligence, and to satisfy many other business needs.
The author immediately cautions that 70% of the businesses using the Internet today lose money. Some of this loss may be due to the lack of the use of common sense, but in a great many cases it is the failure to understand the unique nature of doing business on the Internet. Vince Emery uses a "Mr. Doom" (skull and cross bones) icon throughout the book to highlight messages warning you of common mistakes.
The book is divided into 25 chapters; starting from "Business at the Speed of Light" and ending with "118 Cheap or Free Business Resources on the Net." Throughout the book information sources on the Web are given in bold type. (Want to know about doing business in Japan? Try www.gwjapan.com. Much of it is in English and it is updated weekly. See page 656.)
This book is clearly written and is in the practical, nuts and bolts, hand-on style of writing. He stresses "do a little homework first." An incredible amount of useful and free information is available if you use the search engines and directories listed in the book. He gives one to five star ratings for items in this listing and in other listings. The author gives the current cost figures for the equipment and software required. The range is enormous, from free software to over $100,000.
Know what you need before you leap. In his chapter, "Email: Quickest Bang for Your Buck," he enumerates the cost savings and the communication benefits that the use of email can give your business. At the same time, he notes pitfalls. Email use can overwhelm. Suggestions for controlling this are given. He warns email can be read by others (including competition), altered, and faked (known as spoofing). Encryption and adding digital signatures can be used to secure your email.
Establishing a Web site has been a boom to certain industries, but a flop for others. Lists of both are given. Costs for setting up a Web site can vary greatly. Yet again, do your homework first. Be especially aware that some services that are offered are just plain con operations. He gives a 12 step sequence for building your Web site.
The author stresses the importance of effective writing in order that your Web site succeeds. He notes, for example, Kentucky Fried Chicken sells "finger-lickin' good" and not "dead chicken parts." Also stressed is that the top of a Web page is crucial. This is called "above the fold" and is an expression derived from the newspaper field. When you look at a newspaper vending rack you buy the whole paper based on what you see "above the fold."
There are many seeming small things that can trip up a newcomer to the Internet. For example, writing something in all capital letters is considered shouting. It is wise to reread your messages for possible misinterpretations. We often fail to realize that much of our daily conversation is colored by the tone of our voice and that this is often lost in written communications.
Another area where newcomers may come to grief is "spamming," that is, sending advertising email to people who did not ask for it. This is like a "collect phone call sales pitch." It can result in serious reactions. Your fax machine may be jammed with hate faxes and you might even end up being terminated by your access provider.
Just about everyone in the business world can benefit by reading this book. The Internet has opened the world market to even a one person operation and if you are with a large corporation, your boss, some Friday, may suddenly say "Jones, we need to be on the Internet. Find out how by Monday." Jones, grab this book and read fast.
Excellent Book.......2000-08-18
We all are living now in a global village with a common marketplace. And I think, today everyone knows that business on the Internet is booming. This way there are many fine books available on the market that will assist readers to open up own on-line shop and conduct your home business on the Internet.
Privies edition of the "How to Grow Your Business on the Internet" was one of very the first books about online entrepreneurship I've read. Ant it was really great! But this 3rd edition is much better. It explains the ins and outs of the online business world in plain English -- especially good for beginners.
This is not a computer book, though: if you want to learn about PC's operating systems you'll need additional literature. This excellent book by Vince Emery supplies you with tips on how to market, publicize, and advertise your business online as well as how to generate strategic information using the Internet. A particularly useful chapter uses examples from actual businesses to explain why Internet projects fail and how to make sure yours doesn't.
This is a great place to start! If considering an Internet/Home based business, this is a must read. This is a book for people who take their first steps in the world of Internet entrepreneurship. And I have to say the book does get you thinking and acting. Highly recommend.
A Golden Collection of Internet Business Ideas!.......1998-08-24
It is certainly no joke that business on the Internet is booming! One needs only to surf the Internet to find companies, large and small, offering their products and services to the Internet community. Why not you? There are many fine books available on the market that will assist readers to "open up shop" and conduct business on the Internet. I Know. I've got many of them in my own library. One book that stands out as perhaps the most comprehensive on the subject is How to Grow Your Business on the Internet, authord by Vince Emery. This 3rd edition packs plenty of additional material well worth the cost of buying it.
Emery, a seasoned business pro, sees the Internet as a terrific means to conduct business. He guides his readers along with sound advice and wisdom on obtaining the right computer equipment, the right software, and the right Internet Service Provider. Emery covers a broad range of topics, providing information about Internet business law, financial transactions, intranets, marketing, Web page design and construction, and the caring for customers.
Strengths of the book are found in areas of advertising and promoting one's Website on the Internet. According to Emery, there is more to advertising and promoting than simply dishing out Web pages for the world to see! Emery will help readers determine who their customers are and how to advertise and promote to obtain maximum results Throughout this book, Emery offers his guidance in a concise, straight, forward manner, such as Ten Steps to Internet Success, The Ten Commandments of E-mail, Eleven Steps to Marketing on the Net, and Five Steps to Customer Service and Support, that hit hard to the core of conducting business on the Internet. Emery offers sound business strategies and principles, that if followed, will result in outstanding business success.
Of special interest to readers, Emery includes helpful "danger flags" throughout the book that provide insightful warnings of potential problems that readers may encounter while conducting business on the Internet. Emery offers a number of helpful examples, the actual experiences of himself and others, so that readers may avoid the same problems others have experienced. These are important matters considering the amount of abuse that has transpired on the Internet in the name commerce in recent years!
Of further interest to readers are the recommended reading resources provided for the benefit of the reader. Emery selects many of the finest Internet business books, magazines, newsletters, and online resources available today, saving the reader from the laborious task of having to wade through the vast amount of material around. I suspect that Mr. Emery sneaked into my home and had a look at my library! Emery is a business pro and the guidance he offers is top-notch. Don't conduct business on the Internet without this book! Highly recommended!
The Only Comprehensive Internet Book for Business Managers.......1998-03-15
How to Grow Your Business on the Internet is perhaps the ONLY practical BUSINESS book for the general business manager. It takes a critical look at the business rationale behind using e-mail , newsgroups, web sites, online catalogs. Vince Emery does an excellent job of providing the small business owner or general business manager sound business reasons for using the Internet (in its many different forms), rather than using the old excuse "I have to be on the net - whatever that means - because everyone else is on the net." In addition, there is an Excellent chapter on publicizing your web site. It includes such techniques - which may be familiar to the more experienced, but would be very relevant to the novice - net lurking on newsgroups, e-mail lists/newsletters, extensive use of meta tags, properly coding alt tags, using page titles effectively. I firmly believe that before any business spends a single dollar on e-mail or a web-site, that the manager in charge should read this book. One thing is clear, this book has saved me from making mistakes... mistakes that would have easily cost more than the $20-30 bucks for the book

Book Description
The Philippines economic performance has improved significantly since the early 1990s due to far reaching economic reforms and a return to political stability. The country's post-war history was one of missed opportunities due to poor policies and political upheaval. Thus far the Philippines has weathered the Asian crisis better than many of its neighbours. Australia's exports to the Philippines have surged and increasing numbers of Australian Companies have established an on-the-ground presence. This report examines new challenges and opportunities presented by the Asian crisis, as well as the Philippines progress in addressing longer standing impediments to economic success. Financial sector health, peso depreciation effects, trade and investment regimes, the business environmnet, issues in infrastructure provision, mining policy and agriculture and Australian business opportunities are all evaluated.
