Book Description
Inside the House of Money lifts the veil on the typically opaque world of hedge funds, offering a rare glimpse at how today's highest paid money managers approach their craft. Author Steven Drobny demystifies how these star traders make billions for well-heeled investors, revealing their theories, strategies and approaches to markets. Drobny, cofounder of Drobny Global Advisors, an international macroeconomic research and advisory firm, has tapped into his network and beyond in order assemble this collection of thirteen interviews with the industry's best minds. Along the way, you'll get an inside look at firsthand trading experiences through some of the major world financial crises of the last few decades. Whether Russian bonds, Pakistani stocks, Southeast Asian currencies or stakes in African brewing companies, no market or instrument is out of bounds for these elite global macro hedge fund managers. Highly accessible and filled with in-depth expert opinion, Inside the House of Money is a must-read for financial professionals and anyone else interested in understanding the complexities at stake in world financial markets.
"The ruminations of supposedly hush-hush hedge fund operators are richly illuminating." --New York Times

Insightful visit to the world of the global macro investor........2007-09-28
This fascinating book will take you into the world of current global macro investing. Steven Drobny interviews 13 successful traders, analysts and fund managers who participate in global macro investing in many different ways. Although some of the discussions are technical (but never mathematical), they are readable and easy to understand. Drobny also provides some information on the origins and early years of global macroeconomic investing, from John Keynes to George Soros. He talks to his interviewees about their backgrounds and asks their investment advice. His question-and-answer approach keeps things moving. We enjoyed Drobny's descriptions of the people he interviewed, though the interview-style format leads to somewhat choppy data. This book is surprisingly fun for what could have become a very dense, technical tome in less skilled hands.
Find out what the experts think about investing in the global marketplace .......2007-09-17
This is a terrific book about how 13 investors use global macroeconomics in their work. The shorthand term is global macro. Since the field is pretty much undefined and can include investments of any time anywhere in the world, it is hard to define what exactly it is. In fact, the book isn't about Steven Drobny telling you about what he thinks it is. Instead, the chapters are question and answers with each of these practitioners of this technique.
The first few chapters offer some context and history of global macro investing. The earliest people doing it were probably John Maynard Keynes and Alfred Winlow Jones. Drobny takes us through the key macroeconomic crises of the past several decades and offers a few thoughts about the future.
The people he interviews are Jim Leitner of Falcon Management, Siva-Jothy of SemperMacro, the author's partner, but no relation - Andres Droby, Dr. John Proter of Barclays Capital, Dr. Sushil Wadhwani of Wadhwani Asset Management, Peter Thiel of Clarium Capital, Yra Harris of Praxis Trading, Jim Rogers, Dwight Anderson of Ospraie Management, Scott Bessent Capital, Mark Dimitrijevic of Everest Capital, Rob Standing of London Diversified Fund Management, and an anonymous currency specialist.
All of these folks look for people who are motivated, and have a passion and talent for math, economics, history, and have a demonstrated aptitude for training. You will notice that many have doctorates, but not all. Some learned the trade by trading, all were captivated by the process soon after they first came in contact with it.
I found the range of investments and their thoughts about the global economy fascinating. This is a very interesting book, especially so if you are interested in markets and trading. Their generally gloomy view of the future of the American economy is quite disturbing, though.

A Rare Opportunity that Leaves One Wanting More.......2007-08-21
I love to have extended conversations with experts. I feed off their enthusiasm and expertise. These conversations are even more exciting to me, when the person with whom I am speaking is an expert in a field I love.
With only one lowly exception, Steven Drobny has written a winner for me. By interviewing as assembling the edited transcripts of his conversations in his book, Inside the House of Money, Drobny opened a gateway into the thinking and experiences of 13 successful Global Macro investors.
Although many have the reputations as being secretive and reluctant to discuss their market approaches, the author gives the reader a glimpse of the thinking that goes into placing a multi-million trade on currencies, economies and securities.
Drobny is uniquely qualified to do these interviews. As a partner in an international macroeconomic research and advisory firm, he brings a seasoned professional's insight to the interviews. Key historical events that shaped the experiences of these traders are explored. Nuances of the current crowded markets are discussed intelligently. As a result, the reader gains precious insights into the subtleties of running a Global Macro Hedge Fund.
There is only one problem with the book. I found myself wanting more from the interviewees. Drobny gave me access to people with whom I would never have the opportunity to speak. What I read was great, but I wanted more. But then again, I trade like that.
Excellent book.......2007-08-20
I found very interesting and rich of insights.
It's very useful in understanding hedge fund manager's approach to the markets.
Decent overview of global macro traders.......2007-08-15
The book kept my interest and was very informative. Some of the interviews were excellent. I say some, because those that trade closer to my style are obviously more interesting for me. but theres plenty here for everyone.
I liked the interviews of so many different styles because it just proves my personal theory that anyone can make money. Every trader in the book trades differently and they still all make money.
I also like the comments from many of these traders that said that we were heading for a sub-prime meltdown and that the banks would be having problems. This was written more than a year ago, and thats exactly whats happening today. Dow is now down 8.6% off the high it made last month. The volatility is crazy. And these guys predicted it long ago. Lots of good insight from their interviews.

excellent visual toolkit for the businessman.......1999-10-10
When compared with Terry Richey's The Marketer's Visual Toolkit, I rate Larry Raymond's book second best, in terms of business application possibilities.
Terry's many ideas are geared strictly towards the marketer, whilst Larry's ideas are geared towards the strategic planner - more so in the arena of Organizational Development (OD).
In terms of applications and examples, Terry's book is more wide ranging, although I must add that Larry's book has more depth in his treatment of the subject, from the strategic thinking and planning perspective.
The few examples given in Larry's book are also well illustrated for the businesss reader.
On the whole, Larry's book is still an excellent visual toolkit for the businessman.
For readers who are fascinated by visual tools in the field of business applications, I would recommend exploring Dr. Malcolm Craig's 'Thinking Visually' book. He illustrates with more than a dozen graphical templates f!or visualisation of complex information in business as well as in research.
Fabulous book. Very well written........1998-04-02
Larry Raymond's book is a real eye-openner. He outlines, and then describes in sufficient detail, how to redesign even highly complex organizational structures and work processes in a single day. Immediately, upon reading the book, I spoke with then met with the author. I have applied his process with great success. END

A value-based guide to good business based on the timeless lessons of the Talmud
Here is an accessible and timely guide to one of the most successful business philosophies in history-the Jewish way of doing business. Regarded by the Jews as a high authority, the Talmud is in fact a comprehensive manual for life, containing guidance for virtually every situation, including business and money matters, where our moral mettle is so often tested. With scandal rocking the business world, companies and individuals are seeking a new values-based code by which to do business and the Talmud is full of business lessons as applicable today as they were thousands of years ago. Larry Kahaner shows how businesspeople can apply this ethical wisdom to both their professional and personal lives-and find prosperity as well as a deeper sense of satisfaction.
Larry Kahaner (McLean, VA) is a former Washington staff correspondent for BusinessWeek, a reporter for Knight-Ridder newspapers, and a founding editor of Communications Daily. He is the author of seven books and has appeared on Larry King Live! and NPR.
Customer Reviews:
It's About Life, Too.......2003-11-12
Kahaner's book helped me realize the kind of employer I aspired to be. Many of the contemporary situations Kahaner writes about show the intelligence of the ancient Rabbis. Kahaner's writing style is straightforward, and this book should be required reading for all business owners. But this book isn't just about being an ethical business person, it is about living an ethical life.
Business insights for gentiles.......2003-11-02
As a business editor, I've pretty much seen it all when it comes to advice for company managers and leaders. But this book offers something truly different: new ways to apply values that have been in practice, honed and refined, for 1,500 years. And while you'll obviously get the most from this book if you're a practicing Jew, there's a huge bonus here for gentiles like me. The stories and lessons are far more specific than anything we can discern from the vague background hum of Judeo-Christian values in business today. If you want solid spiritual guidance that you can take to work every day, this book is for you. Besides the rabbis, you'll learn a little bit from everybody, from Mark Twain to Deutsche Bank to diamond dealers. So, go for it. You'll like it.
An Important Book.......2003-10-29
Kahaner has written a number of excellent business books and has always come up with a fresh theme or outlook to add to what is often a very predictable genre. By winnowing the Talmud for business advice he has found plenty of original material with a number of surprises that will be useful to businessmen at any level of experience. In a world full of troubling news about the leaders of America's companies this book couldn't have come at a more opportune time. I hereby sentence all CEOs in America to read, and heed, these valuable words and lessons.
Provocative and Entertaining.......2003-09-25
I read a lot of business books, but this one made me sit up and take notice. Mr. Kahaner writes on a challenging subject with remarkable clarity and insight. He really brings the ancient wisdom to life!
Priceless, timeless advice from an unimpeachable source!.......2003-09-13
The Jewish people have survived for over 4,000 years, in large part because they have stuck to a core set of values embodied in the Talmud. These teachings are as relevant today as they were times past, and as Larry Kahaner so ably shows, can be applied to our modern business dealings to great results. If you are seeking a way to enrich your business life and your spiritual life at the same time, this book is for you.

This summer, your child can rock climb, travel through Africa, learn to speak fluent Spanish, act, paint, write, prepare for the SATs, brush up on soccer skills, lose weight, kayak, or bike through the south of France--but probably not all of those things at once. Finding the right summer program, workshop, or camp can be an overwhelming experience, but Peterson's Summer Opportunities for Kids and Teenagers makes it easy for children to select the adventure that's right for them. A step-by-step guide allows kids to sort through these listings in any way that makes sense to them, or in several ways at one time: by specialized field of interest, geographical location, activities offered, or even financial aid opportunities. An overview called "The Inside Scoop" offers kids ideas about what kinds of opportunities they can choose from; "Fast Facts" gives important statistics about more than 1,800 programs across the U.S. and the world; specialized directories list programs in eight interest categories, including academics, sports, wilderness adventures, and special needs; and detailed profiles offer in-depth information about selected programs and camps, including comments by past participants. Throughout, the information is presented in an accessible, kid-friendly way, making it fun and easy for children to take charge of their own summer plans.

A very useful read.......2007-10-10
I really liked the information that was presented in this book. I plan on opening my own computer business and posibly my own brand of computers. This book helped me realize some errors I might have done in starting up, so it is a real good source for refference if you haven't already formulated a solid business plan.
The book was easy to follow and information flowed well through it. 2 thumbs up

Not for the pre-biz...for the computer biz.......2007-09-30
This book belongs in everyone's library who is interested in starting their own computer services company. It does not tell you what you need for a startup business, it's a guide so you can make informed decesions for a beginning computer company AFTER you've taken care of getting your business license. Great ideas, what to look out for, what to LOOK for. I used this book to compare my ideas for a computer business and to get some measure on how an existing computer business I was researching to purchase was being run. I decided not to buy and started my new business from scratch instead. I believe this book helped save me thousands of dollars.
Okay for a non-seasoned professional.......2007-09-11
The book was fine for a one-person start-up. It gave insightful information, but mostly full of generalizations. It didn't assist much for what I wanted.
PC Tech Student Digs Morris!.......2007-06-07
This book is worth buying and reading several times to make sure you "get it". I was thinking of building custom PCs after graduation, but after considering everything Mr. Rosenthal pointed out, I believe it would be wiser for me to start out offering repair services and one-on-one training.
Appreciate the honest reviews by others on this book also. Great reviews- Great Book!
Overall good book, useful information........2006-07-15
I liked the book.
From a small pc builder's viewpoint, a hard part in getting started is in finding REAL wholesaler sources.
(Not middlemen who get in the way and jack up one's final costs).
The book mentioned a website called the Reseller's source kit.
( www.rs-kit.com). It is a "subscription only" site
(to gain access to the vendor's).
But, they also offer a free newsletter.
I joined the site and while it had interesting newsletters and informative details about the "small-biz-owner-pc-shop" business.
I was not blown away by any great pricing, on OEM software, or on hardware.
[So the idea of finding cheap hardware and software, then build a pc for cheap,WHILE making a reasonable ($100+) profit, very quickly vanished]
The small biz owner that deals with PC's has to think NICHE!
There's not enough money to be made in marketing of pc's directly to consumers. Maybe $100 per pc, a big MAYBE!
One NICHE could be after-the-sale "services".
- Training on software apps,
- peripherals training (i.e. video editing),
- remote data backup services (offsite disaster recovery)
- or other services.
If nothing else, it is an eye opening book into what is involved in running this type of business.
In today's world, I think a small pc retail business would be very hard pressed to compete against someone like Dell ,head to head. Only on price.
The giant pc makers have volume purchasing on their side and inexpensive overseas tech support personnel on call.
But if you think "computer Consultant" and find a niche area to specialize in, there is money to be made.
Especially if you can solve problems in person, if needed.
Examples:
- Performing a disaster recovery after a hard drive crash,
- re-configuring a specialized software application to get it to work again
- removing mal-ware and/or virus' and reloading the OS.
Just my 02 cents.

From the supplier: Editors can successfully manage their time and finances by motivating their staff. It is imperative that they get involved in developing their budgets. They must persuade the publisher or executive editor that the editorial page can be made more interesting if there is a realistic list of budget requirements. Effective time management also requires proper delegation of responsibilities. Essentially, managing time and money can be accomplished easily when it is well-planned.
